Delivering the welcome address, Chairman of the LAIF Management Board, Jay Chukwuemeka, reflected on the transformational strides recorded by the Board since 2023 and the significance of the festival’s two-decade journey.
“As my term as LAIF Board Chair wraps up, I am filled with pride and gratitude. In our final year, we are honored to celebrate the incredible achievements recorded since 2023. We have witnessed remarkable growth, innovation, and creativity, and tonight we recognize the best among us. One of the defining achievements of this Board has been the creation of structures that ensure inclusivity, expansion, and a seamless handover to the next leadership. Initiatives such as the LAIF Report, the LAIF Academy, the LAIF Archive Portal, the Domination Committee, and the Internship Program have strengthened the festival and deepened industry collaboration. Congratulations to all our winners, and thank you to everyone who made this journey possible. We came, we saw, we raised the bar, and we brought new life into LAIF,” he said.

In his remarks on the occasion. President, Association of Advertising Agencies of Nigeria (AAAN), Lanre Adisa, stated that the celebration of this significant milestone reflects the initiative’s influence and reinforces the collective responsibility of the advertising industry to preserve and advance the legacy of Nigerian creativity.

Adisa applauded the consistency of the LAIF Management Board, the contributions of past leaders, and the dedication of countless practitioners whose work continues to elevate Nigeria’s creative reputation globally. “Tonight, we are not just celebrating creativity, we are celebrating endurance, patience, and the collective resilience of an industry that refuses to die. LAIF began as a simple dream that our work deserved to be seen, judged, and celebrated.

Today, it has grown into one of the strongest creative institutions on the continent. As we enjoy the night, let’s remember that advertising will be 100 years old in Nigeria by 2028. This means the next chapter is on all of us. We must continue to push boundaries, discover new talent, and prove that Nigeria is not just part of the global conversation, but that we aim to lead it. Celebrate, toast, reflect, and come back stronger. The future is bright, and it begins here,” he said.

Cultism: Edo Govt demolishes more buildings

In its continued move to curb kidnappings and cult activities in Edo State, the Edo State Government has demolished properties linked to cult activities in Uromi, Esan North-East Local Government Area.

Several buildings belonging to suspected cultists or linked to criminal activities have been demolished across the state.

Chief Press Secretary to Governor Monday Okpebholo, Dr. Patrick Ebojele, in a statement, said the demolition in Uromi followed an earlier security raid conducted on November 17 by the State’s Special Security Squad in collaboration with the Nigerian Army and other security agencies.

Dr. Ebojele said 31 suspects were arrested at various hideouts, while leaders of the Black Axe and Eiye confraternities were given a seven-day ultimatum to surrender.

Ebojele said the no compliance after expiration of the ultimatum made the state government moved to pull down buildings where incriminating evidence were uncovered.

He said the operation was led by the Principal Security Officer to Governor Monday Okpebholo, supported by the Divisional Police Officer in Uromi, local vigilante groups, the Esan North-East Anti-Kidnapping Committee and personnel of the Nigerian Army.

Edo Coordinator of Operation Flush Out Kidnapping and Cultism, Idemudia Noah, said the demolition became necessary after the suspects failed to take advantage of both the ultimatum and an extended grace period.

Bonga oil spill: Niger Delta fishermen beg Tinubu, others to intervene in $3.6bn compensation delay

Aggrieved members of the Artisan Fishermen Association of Nigeria in the Niger Delta have appealed to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, the Chairman of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), Mr. Olanipekun Olukoyede, and the Attorney-General of the Federation and Minister of Justice, Lateef Fagbemi (SAN), to intervene in the long-delayed compensation arising from the 2011 Bonga oil spill.

The fishermen – through their leaders and community representatives, Rev. Samuel Ayadi (Akwa Ibom), Princess Elizabeth Egbe (Bayelsa), Alfred Kuroko (Delta), Prince Alexander Mesogboriwon (Ondo), Jeremiah Omogbemi, Olamiyeye Jeje, Alhaji Durojaye Erukubami, and Alabo Oris Otto (Rivers) – made the appeal in a statement jointly signed on Saturday.

In the copy of the statement obtained by The Nation in Akure, and addressed to President Tinubu, the group recalled that the December 2011 equipment failure at the Shell Nigeria Exploration and Production Company (SNEPCO) Bonga offshore facility allegedly discharged an estimated 6.4 million litres of crude oil into the Atlantic Ocean.

According to them, the spill spread across Akwa Ibom, Bayelsa, Delta, Rivers, and Ondo states, leaving thousands of fishermen and community members impoverished and worsening hardship in coastal communities.

They noted that the National Oil Spill Detection and Response Agency (NOSDRA) had, in 2012, imposed a $3.6 billion liability on Shell for alleged negligence that resulted in extensive environmental damage.

The group said: “His Excellency, Alhaji Bola Ahmed Tinubu, sir, December 20, 2011 Bonga oil spillage Shell Nigeria Exploration and Production Company Limited’s Bonga floating production storage and offloading (FPSO) offshore facility had an equipment failure and discharged about 6.4 million litres of crude oil into the Atlantic Ocean.

“The spill spread across five states of the Niger Delta – Akwa Ibom, Bayelsa, Delta, Rivers, and Ondo – causing devastating effects on the people and resulting in joblessness, poverty and social vices. Fishing is our main source of livelihood.

“In 2012, NOSDRA imposed a total liability of $3.6 billion on Shell for the negligence that led to the devastation. Till date, the money has not been paid to the affected thousands of fisherfolk and communities. We have written several letters demanding this compensation.

“We believe in President Tinubu’s Renewed Hope agenda, and we want him to compel Shell and NOSDRA to release the compensation. The EFCC should intervene to uncover what has happened concerning the compensation, and the Attorney-General should ensure justice, fairness, and equity.”

They lamented that more than a decade after the spill, the affected communities have not received a single payment despite repeated petitions and follow-up letters to relevant authorities.

The fishermen further stated that the prolonged delay has deepened hardship among families who depended solely on fishing for survival, with many communities still battling the social and economic consequences of the pollution.

  • 300 Lagosians benefit from free medical outreach

300 Lagosians benefit from free medical outreach

It was a day of joy and renewed hope yesterday as more than 300 Lagosians received free medical care during the Garage Health and Divine Touch Outreach, organised by the Treasure Neighborhood Development Foundation at Ketu Garage, Lagos.

The outreach provided transport workers and residents with a wide range of free services, including medical consultations, eye tests, malaria screening, blood pressure and blood sugar checks, weight assessment, free medications, and professional medical advice.

President of the Foundation, Mr. Joseph Ovbude, told The Nation that the initiative was born out of the organisation’s commitment to promoting holistic living, especially among commercial drivers whose health directly affects the safety of commuters.

“Transporters drive our lives every day. In many ways, the destinies of people are in the hands of those behind the steering wheel,” Ovbude said.

“If their minds or bodies are not sound, it can lead to accidents or avoidable incidents. That is why we came here—to help them live healthier lives.”

Ovbude noted that the Foundation chose Ketu Garage because of the large population of commercial drivers and the high level of pressure associated with their daily work.

He explained that although the outreach was primarily a medical intervention, the Foundation also incorporated spiritual support through ministers who once lived “rough lives” similar to those of many transporters.

“A rough lifestyle contributes to poor health. Medicine alone cannot fix some issues, so we brought in men of God to encourage them spiritually. But the core focus remains medical care,” he said.

The outreach was supported by a team of doctors, pharmacists, nurses, and laboratory technologists who attended to patients and offered referrals for more serious cases. The Foundation collected beneficiaries’ contact details to enable follow-up care where necessary.

As the festive season begins and travel increases, Ovbude said the outreach was timely.

“This is a period when people travel a lot. We want drivers to understand that life is more than rushing for passengers. If they drive recklessly, they risk both their lives and the lives of those they carry,” he added.

Beyond the one-day intervention, the Foundation plans to do more for Ketu Garage and other communities, including educational support and assistance for widows and vulnerable families. Ovbude called on corporate organisations to partner with them to expand the reach of their humanitarian efforts.

To commercial drivers, he offered a simple message: “Health is key. Bad habits—smoking, drinking, and other vices—destroy lives. They can be stopped. Many of the people speaking to you today once lived that life, but they changed. If it happens to them, it can happen to you too.”

In her response, one of the beneficiaries, a trader at Ketu Garage, Mrs. Olaleye Cecelia, said she was full of joy for this kind gesture. My vitals were checked and free drugs were given. It is a laudable initiative and worthy of commendation.

  • Adebayo can lead Nigeria –Ighodalo

    Adebayo can lead Nigeria –Ighodalo

Pastor in charge of Trinity House, a nondenominational, Christian fellowship centre and founder, African Leadership Group (ALG), Ituah Ighodalo, has declared that the 2023 presidential candidate of the Social Democratic Party (SDP), Prince Adewole Adebayo, perfectly fits into the kind of a leader that Nigeria direly needs to take it out of its current socioeconomic, political and structural doldrums.

He noted that what Adebayo may not have is the wide bandwidth of interrelationship and connection but he surely has the capacity, the knowledge and the determination to lead the country.

He, however, noted that with a strong political party base, he would make up for that deficiency and pull through.

“Adebayo is 53 years old, he is young. He has the energy, the strength and the knowledge. What he probably may not have is the wide bandwidth of interrelationships and connections.

“But that is what a party system does for you. If, for example, he was in a party that was a broad-based party, a strong party, they will make up for his lack of bandwidth and they will pull the party together and promote him as a good candidate.

“Adebayo speaks very well. He’s very knowledgeable, although I have not tested his capacity to implement things, but in terms of knowledge, enthusiasm and roadmap, he’s spoken very well,” he said.

He stressed that Nigeria was still in search of a leader that would turn things around and take the country out of the current mess.

“Younger person with energy, you know; maybe you need maturity also because you can’t be too young. I think a person between the ages of 45 and 65 should be able to do this job. I think there is a need for some maturity.

“Candidate below 40 might be a bit too inexperienced and not have the network and the broad base to handle a complex place like Nigeria. But, if we have a person of 40, 45 years and above and is surrounded by a very good party system or good social system, a good team of advisors who have seen different aspects of Nigeria, such a candidate should be able to run the country and Adebayo fits into that category.”

On what is required to effectively govern Nigeria, he said such a leader must understand the history, the background and the formation of Nigeria, as well as the different tribes and persons, their complexities, interests and religions.

Read Also: Naming and shaming of sponsors as solution to escalating terrorism in Nigeria

“The person must be a very accommodating person; very honest, corruption-free, and hard-working. The person must also be a visionary, who sees a great future for Nigeria. He must be bold and have the capacity for international relationships and interconnections and he must be determined to see Nigeria walk.

“The person must not be a greedy, selfish, self-oriented person, which is the unfortunate lot of a lot of our leaders today. They’re more interested in themselves and what they want to do for themselves and not in the collective good of the average Nigerians,” he stated.

He also said that Nigeria is not lacking such characters, saying, “It’s just that we may not know them. We may not know them because they’ve not been loud people. They’ve not made noise all over the place. They’ve not been exposed to public attention and all that, but they do exist.  There are very many competent people in Nigeria. And if you go all over the world, a lot of Nigerians are doing extremely well.

“They are available, which is part of what we are trying to do at the African Leadership Group (ALG); to find these people and bring them out, talk to them, find out where they are and what they are doing. Even if they are not president, they can be support material because to run Nigeria, you need quite a good team. You need a good team of different kinds of people.
