US to host expanded FIFA Club World Cup in 2025

THE US will host a first-ever 32-team FIFA Club World Cup in 2025 as a prelude to the men’s 2026 FIFA World Cup.

“The FIFA Council has unanimously appointed the United States as the host of the new and expanded 32-team FIFA Club World Cup that is due to take place in 2025, at its meeting held by videoconference from the Home of FIFA,” world football’s governing body said in a Friday statement.

“The decision was reached based on the United States’ position as a proven leader in staging global events and because it would allow FIFA to maximise synergies with the delivery of the FIFA World Cup 2026, to the benefit of both tournaments and the development of football in the North American region,” FIFA said.

Canada, Mexico, and the US will co-host the 2026 World Cup as the ultimate international football contest returns to North America.

The US last hosted the men’s World Cup some 30 years ago, in 1994. Mexico, on the other hand, hosted the World Cup finals twice, in 1970 and 1986. This will be Canada’s first time hosting a men’s World Cup tournament.

“As a next step, FIFA will engage with the relevant stakeholders to finalise the dates, venues and match schedule of this new tournament (2025 Club World Cup),” FIFA added.

“The FIFA Club World Cup 2025 will be the pinnacle of elite professional men’s club football, and with the required infrastructure in place together with a massive local interest, the United States is the ideal host to kick off this new, global tournament,” said FIFA President Gianni Infantino.

“With some of the world’s top clubs already qualified, fans from every continent will be bringing their passion and energy to the United States in two years’ time for this significant milestone in our mission to make football truly global,” he added.

Europe has 12 slots for the expanded 2025 FIFA Club World Cup, while the host nation will have one.

Founded in 2000, the Club World Cup was last won by Real Madrid in 2022.

The Spanish football powerhouse won it five times to be the world record holders.

The next Club World Cup, the 20th edition of the competition, will be played in Saudi Arabia in December 2023, the swan song for the seven-team Club World Cup.

Naija Super 8: Remo Stars trash 3SC, join Lobi Stars in finals

Remo Stars of Ogun State made good its promise to thrash Ibadan darling team 3SC at the Naija Super 8, which kicked off at the Eket Township Stadium Saturday.

The NPFL second-placed took their win over Shooting Stars to three yesterday as they put three into the net of their opponents in a match that the Oluyole Warriors failed to take their chances.

In the match tagged ‘Southwest Derby’ Remo Stars were more clinical in attack and did not waste time before opening the floodgate of goals in the 8th minute through Andy Okpe in a goalmouth scramble. Boniface Nwaeze nodded home the second three minutes later, while Samuel Anakwe put the game beyond the reach of Shooting Stars late on in the second stanza of the match.

Remo Stars would be representing Southwest in the main tournament in Lagos.

In the first match of the day, Lobi Stars of Makurdi defeated City FC of Abuja 4-3 on penalties to clinch the Northcentral ticket.

The match ended 2-2 on regulation with Lobi Stars coming back into the game after the fleet-footed Abuja Boys had the teeming fans rooting for them jumped into the lead in the second half.

In fact, it looked like City FC was running away with a victory when Atule Joseph equalised for Lobi in the 86th minute. Lobi went on to win from the penalty spot.

Remo Stars head coach, Daniel Ogunmodede, said the score line against Shooting Stars was not a reflection of the match. “My boys were lucky to score three goals. Shooting Stars came out well and we were tired having just finished the NPFL Playoffs.”

He said they have a good chance of doing well in the finals slated for Lagos from July 7-16.

As it were, Shooting Stars and Remo Stars have met seven times with Remo Stars winning three games and four drawn.

Chairman of Shooting Stars Dimeji Lawal congratulated Remo Stars. “It is their time and we have to give it to them. Though the score wasn’t a reflection of the match, the point is that they were clinical in front of the goal and we were not. I wish them well.”

The Northeast Derby takes the center stage today with Yobe Stars confronting Gombe United, while the bigger match of the day comes after between NPFL champions Enyimba FC and oriental rivals Heartland FC of Owerri.

My wife connived with her lover to beat me, man tells court

A divorce-seeking man, Abayomi Oreyemi, has prayed a Mapo Grade A Customary Court in Ibadan to dissolve his 22-year-old union to his estranged wife, Basirat, on the grounds of battery and waywardness.

Oreyemi, a father of four, made the prayer in his counter- argument against his wife’s allegation of irresponsibility, lack of love and domestic violence.

He said that he had reported his wife to her relatives in her Igbo-Ora hometown without any positive outcome.

“At around 9.30 p.m. on a particular night, a man called Baba Aliya, who I later got to know as her lover, came to drop Basirat in my house with his car.

“I confronted them and demanded to know what they were doing together, but Basirat hauled insults at me and even tore my dress.

“The following morning, she arrested me with the police and it was not until I explained everything to them that the police released me from detention.

“Aside that day, I had met the two of them together in my matrimonial home before, and in fact they beat me on account of my curiosity.

“My lord, I don’t want her to bear Oreyemi again and I prefer to take custody of my children,” he pleaded.

Earlier, Basirat, the petitioner who earned her livelihood as a civil servant, told the court that her husband had never demonstrated any capacity that he truly loved and care for her.

She said that Oreyemi did not show her any kind of consolation when she lost her two parents on separate occasions.

“He simply said that he couldn’t afford the transportation to Igbo-Ora.

“As if that was not enough, Oreyemi manifested his irresponsibility when I delivered our second child, as he was nowhere to be found.

“For our first child, it was my mother that paid the hospital bills.

“Worse still, he beats my younger sister and I at any slightest opportunity.

“Furthermore, since our landlord expelled us from our apartment, I was forced to live with a close friend.

“Also, since our children started schooling, Oreyemi has contributed nothing to their education and I’ve been solely responsible for their sustenance.

“He even broke into my bedroom during the last Eid festival when I travelled to my hometown,” Basirat said.

She tendered evidence of the damaged door before the court.

Basirat also said that there was no valid marriage between both of them, as Oreyemi did not pay the necessary bride price to her parents.

Delivering judgment, the court’s President, Mrs S.M. Akintayo, held that there was no marriage to be dissolved between the petitioner and the respondent, because there was no evidence of valid marriage between them.

According to Akintayo, for any union to be considered as a valid marriage, there must be presentation of bride price, formal handover of the bride to the husband and presentation of gifts.

Drug users need help, not punishment – NDLEA

The National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA), Tincan, Apapa Lagos, Special Area Command, has urged Nigerians to view drug users as persons in need of help rather than criminals.

Mohammed Abubakar, commander of narcotics of the command, said that drug addiction was a medical condition that requires treatment and rehabilitation, and not punishment.

He made the appeal during an advocacy walk to drive the ‘War Against Drug Abuse’ (WADA) in Lagos yesterday.

The walk was in commemoration of International Day Against Drug Abuse and Illicit Trafficking.

It is observed every year on June 26 to raise awareness about the dangers of drug abuse and the illicit drug trade.

NDLEA, with some sister security agencies like the Nigerian police and the Nigeria Customs Service, toured the Tincan port axis.

This year’s celebration is with the theme: “People First; Stop Stigmatisation and Discrimination, Strengthen Prevention”.

He added that the agency was working toward increasing access to treatment and rehabilitation services for drug users across the country.

Abubakar also called on the government and the private sector to support the agency’s efforts to tackle drug abuse and trafficking in the country.

“Stop stigmatisation of people using drugs. Don’t call them addicts, but people having drug challenges so that they can get better,” he said.

According to him, the agency has various initiatives, one of which is WADA, initiated by its chairman and chief executive officer, Brig. Gen. Buba Marwa, (Rtd).

“This initiative was borne out of the zeal to enlighten and educate the public against the danger of drug abuse in the society.

“The person using drugs is not only a danger to himself, but to everybody around him. When we talk about financial security, you cannot deal with anyone that is abusing drugs,” he said.

The NDLEA boss also appreciated the synergy that the agency had with the chairperson, Apapa Local Government Area, Idowu Shobanjo, in commemorating the day.

He noted that as an agency that operate in the maritime sector, it was necessary to ensure that goods that came into the country through the borders and others were well monitored.

“Most of the containers that are coming into the country, come with some of these dangerous drugs. So, all the agencies around the corridors of the maritime domain should ensure that they keep the society and the community secured.

“The only way we can achieve a secure community is to emphasise on preventive measures and one of them is the exercise we conducted today,” he said

He urged the youth, especially corps members that participated in the walk, not to resort to self-medication.

According to him, to strengthen prevention, the NDLEA has a 24 hours toll free call centre where anyone can call for help every day of the week and discuss in three different languages of Igbo, Yourba or Hausa.

He said that the agency had approved the establishment of rehabilitation centres in the six geopolitical zones of the country, where counselling would be taking place.

Also commenting, Mrs Shobanjo urged the public to stop the stigmatisation of drug users, noting that such act makes it difficult for them to stop using it.

‘Most of the time these users get into drugs through bad habits, friends, bad influence and some of them peer pressure and frustration.

She listed some of the factors that lead people to drug abuse as peer pressure, depression as a result of pressure from home, financial pressure, lack of work and rejection from boyfriends or girlfriends.

Tinubu: Financial system rotten under Emefiele

    • •Says associates thought he was joking when he said subsidy was gone
    • •Pledges to keep Africa as centerpiece of Nigeria’s foreign policy

PRESIDENT Bola Tinubu yesterday returned a damning verdict on Nigeria’s financial system under the suspended Central Bank Governor Godwin Emefiele.

Tinubu, in his first public comment on the CBN governor since his June 9 suspension, said the financial system run by Emefiele was rotten.

The President spoke during an interactive session with Nigerians in the Diaspora resident in France and neighbouring European countries, on the sidelines of the New Global Financing pact Summit in Paris.

The multiple exchange rates under the ‘rotten’ financial system, according to him, was largely responsible for the reluctance of many Nigerians in the diaspora to remit money home.

But he said all that is now a thing of the past.

“Then the financial system was rotten,” he said.

He added: “Few people were making bags of our money and then you yourself, you stopped sending money home to our poor parents. Several windows… but that is gone now, it’s gone.

“The man is in the hands of the authorities. Something is being done about that. They will sort themselves out.”

Tinubu, who also spoke on the decision of the federal government to do away with the fuel subsidy, said some of his associates and friends thought he was joking when he declared that the subsidy era was gone.

He recalled how his associates he had assembled to put his plans and speeches together ahead of his May 29 inauguration left the issue of subsidy removal out.

He said since he was determined to put an end to the subsidy which has been a stumbling block to Nigeria’s growth, he was seized by courage to make the announcement once he mounted the podium to deliver his speech.

His words: “Some countries were bleeding us. Courage was missing.

“Sometimes I became an advocate of it. Remove this thing. But God gave me the opportunity when I danced around, strategised with my team.

“We won the Presidency, and the day I was declared winner, I fell almost sick with joy.

“A few friends visited me rejoicing. So I asked the question: ‘You asked me to bring this trophy. This victory, what do you do with it?’

“I brought it. I won. We must achieve with it. We must change Nigeria with it. And then Wale Edun and co, we started debating, putting my speech together without the question on subsidy.

“I got to the podium, I was possessed with courage, and I said subsidy is gone. They thought it was the joke of the century until I called NNPC.

“We are tired of feeding smugglers, making few people rich and subsidising the next door neighbour.

“I met with the President of Benin Republic today (yesterday). Everybody is equal now. We are friends. We are conjoined twins, joined at the hips. How we will separate from each other is this fuel subsidy. Let us see whether we will survive or not. But we are going to survive you.”

Tinubu said the palliatives for Nigerians to cushion the effect of the removal on subsidy were being worked out.

Read Also: Why we are holding Emefiele, by DSS

On the strike threatened by organised Labour against the fuel subsidy removal, Tinubu said workers could not be asking for palliative, salary increase and transportation and still want the old order to remain.

He said: “You want money increase in palliative, transportation… what are you protesting about? Are you sharing part of the subsidy? If you protest I will join you and protest against. And they stopped. No protest

“Palliatives we will get, but we have to save the money in order to embark on palliative.”

Africa remains centre piece of Nigeria’s economic, foreign policies

Also yesterday, Tinubu met with President Alain Berset of Switzerland and President Patrice Talon of Benin Republic on the sideline of the Paris summit.

He told Talon during their meeting that Nigeria will sustain its spotlight on African countries as the fulcrum of its policies on economy and foreign policy.

He pledged that trade issues, security and border controls would be mutually implemented.

Bilateral relations with African countries, particularly at the sub-regional level, he said, would be enhanced for shared benefits in areas of security, health, energy, education and diplomacy.

“We are ready to improve relations. Africa has been the centre piece of Nigeria’s foreign policy,” he said.

“I believe in Africa. We have the necessity to grow the continent. The world’s economy is wobbling and Africa has been left behind.

“On risk factors, Africa is always placed high, with higher interest rates on borrowing. We are always classified as high risk. We must work together for systematic recovery and growth,” he added.

President Tinubu described Nigeria’s relations with Benin as that of a Siamese twins joined at the hips and supported by other friendly countries.

“We must recognise the fact that we need each other. We are in a loop and no one should separate us,” he stated, stressing that his administration would always be open and accessible to Nigeria’s neighbours.

“I just appointed someone who will work with you as Comptroller General of Customs, Adewale Bashir Adeniyi, and he will be available for our common interest,” the President noted.

The President of Benin said he was inspired with renewed hope for the sub-region and Africa at the inauguration of Tinubu in Abuja, pledging to provide support on trade and security policy, especially at the borders.

“We are prepared to work with you, Your Excellency, in implementing policies that will protect our economies at land and sea entries. Whatever is forbidden in Nigeria will also be forbidden in Benin,” Talon added.

President Tinubu also had bilateral meetings with the President of the African Development Bank, Dr Akinwunmi Adesina.

  • NAFDAC seals pharmaceutical company over alleged breaches

NAFDAC seals pharmaceutical company over alleged breaches

The National Agency of Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC) on Friday sealed Gentle Hills Limited, a pharmaceutical company, for alleged production and storage of unregistered products.

The Deputy Director of NAFDAC in Akwa-Ibom, Mr Naeche John, disclosed this during a routine facility visit to pharmaceutical companies in Port Harcourt.

John alleged that the affected company was producing some products without NAFDAC registered numbers.

“The practice is not in line with NAFDAC Good Manufacturing Practice (GMP) regulations,” he said.

He said that the agency once visited the company on a facility check to ensure it was operating in line with GMP.

“GMP is a controlled system to ensure that products are consistently produced and controlled in quality standard expected of a particular product,” John said.

He alleged that the agency was refused the check before it went back to the company with regulatory force agents to be able to access the facility.

“We saw that the company has some packaging materials and finished products which were not registered by NAFDAC, while about twelve product packages and labels had the same NAFDAC number, which is not supposed to be.

“The Managing Director of the company, Mr Nnamdi Anyanwu, claimed he had yet to start production at the company’s new site.

“But we saw some finished products and evidence of production in the factory without evidence of approved registered numbers of the agency.

“We saw different brands of cough syrup packages, such as quinykid syrup, pundy suspension, Mist Alba, flush quick action, chestalyn, sprilyn, spirex, containers for production, biological test tubes, among others,” he said.

He further alleged that Anyanwu claimed to have contract with a manufacturing company that produced for them but that company’s name was not on the labels and packages, rather it Gentle Hills Ltd that was on the packaging as the manufacturer.

“The managing director also claimed to have reported to NAFDAC about the errors made on the labels and packages of the manufacturer’s address by the printer.

“We urge him to bring a copy of the letter he submitted notifying NAFDAC of the errors to our office.

“All these abnormalities speak volume about the standard of the products manufactured in the company not in line with the GMP regulations.

“We have invited the management of the company to our office for sanction,” John said.

Reacting to the allegations, Anyanwu said that his company had NAFDAC approved numbers for the production of some products.

According to him, the old packaging materials and bottles seen by NAFDAC officers in the company’s stores were moved from the company’s old site.

“We do not intend to make any product without NAFDAC registration number and we have never made any without approval.

“We are still waiting for the registration numbers after proper documentation at NAFDAC,” he said.

Anyanwu also insisted that the company notified NAFDAC about the errors on the address and was advised by the agency to correct the errors.
