DANIEL ETIM: I ignore odd requests to focus on family

DANIEL Etim Effiong is a Nigerian Nollywood actor and film director. The style star, who is much loved for his simple yet classy taste in fashion has become darling to many. From luxe tuxedos to modish natives and dapper casuals, Etim Effiong’s career is on the rise with every role he portrays. Some of his roles in films that include Still Falling, Collision Course, The Men’s Club,’and Kofa are some of the reasons many of his fans can’t get enough of him. Born on June 24, the actor opens up to The Nation’s TUNRAYO ILESANMI in this interview.

Did you feel comfortable while quitting your job to switch to entertainment?

Initially, it was a struggle for me to make the switch because I was used to the structure of a 9 to 5. The salary and income and making the switch to entertainment was a walk of faith. I had prayed about it and spoken to a very few people about it, I also fasted and prayed and felt God was giving me the go ahead to take the leap of faith and that was it. I had thought about it for a long time but I could not do it but the moment I took time to pray and fast, I felt God was leading me to go ahead and I just did it.

How supportive has the government been to Nollywood in comparison to music?

I like to think of the music and film industry as step children of the Nigerian government. We have been treated alike but in recent years, the music industry has established itself even internationally and now everyone wants to associate with it. I feel like the music industry is that sibling that is highly successful and everyone wants to associate with her. Film on the other hand is still struggling, showing promises and people tend to rather go for the flashy and success story rather than the struggling one but give it time and the right support and the film industry would blossom. I feel like the government can do a lot more to support both the film and music industry but more for the film industry.

Considering how controversial Nollywood is, how have you been able to shield yourself and your family?

The way I shield myself from controversy is by minding my business and focusing on my craft and when I’m not working, I focus on my family and try to be present as much as I can because the job is quite tasking and takes you away from home a lot, you get to travel so the moment I’m home, I try to be present for my family. You get the odd request here and there and comments on social media but I ignore it and don’t pay attention. There are certain things that I value and those are the things I focus on which are my career, my family, my faith and inspiring people. This is where I keep my focus and every other thing is secondary. What you pay attention to is what would grow, flourish and thrive so if you don’t pay attention to controversies, naturally they would dry up. The blogs would go for their regular customers and try to poke people who they can get juice from as it were but if you poke me, you ain’t getting nothing because there’s nothing to get really and I believe that’s how I stay away from controversies. Also, the element of God’s grace is involved.

Do you ever go off script during your shoots?

I like to keep things fresh and so I might go off maybe 2-5 percent, so it is fresh and original and so it does not look like you are regurgitating the script verbatim but ultimately it would depend on the director you are working with. Some directors would like you to be a bit more original with the material while others would not mind a bit of flexibility. Ultimately, the goal is to make it original and own the lines while also being true to the lines and in doing that, it entails going off the script. I’m open to going off the script for the performance and directors.

Your wife is into media while you are into entertainment, how are you both able to navigate being in the limelight?

Before we got married, we both had our careers. When I married her, she was already in the media and working there, she was also in the New York film academy and working for Sahara reporters and when she met me, I was in South Africa studying film but I was already an actor. One of the goals coming together in marriage was that I would inspire her to be all she can be within the media space and also vice versa. So it was easy for me to inspire and push her and also encourage and enable her to grow and she is also doing the same in my life. Media and entertainment are complementary and so it’s easy for us to function together in our spaces and also together as a couple. She runs a talent management company and I am signed up there and that is one of the expressions in which we complement one another. Her company manages me and when she has some ideas, I help her write and flesh it out. I also give her creative ideas for execution and that is another way we complement each other. I think our union was pre-ordained by God because I think media and entertainment work beautifully together and that has been instrumental to both of our growth in the industry.

You are known to always act romantic roles, does it portray your personality as a romantic person?

I would not claim to be a romantic person but I think my wife would do a better job at answering that. I just feel I do great at whatever role I am given and I try to do justice to it. But of course, in nollywood, the tendency is to get stereotyped and the onus is on the actor to avoid being limited or to take advantage and make it work. In my case, what has happened is that I’ve done one or two very successful romantic movies and people see that I am soft spoken and look a certain way and they feel I would do great and tend to want me to play more romantic roles but I would say that I enjoy playing other roles and I look forward to playing roles that are not romantic.

My wife is in the media space while I’m into entertainment but the truth is that we were both very successful in our careers before we even met albeit, relatively. When I met her, she was in the New York film academy and she was working with Sahara reporters while I was studying directing in South Africa. When we decided to get married, our expectations were we’d allow each other to grow in our career but coming together we have been able to inspire each other and give ourselves room to grow and express and thrive. And also because media and entertainment are complementary to each other, we find meeting points in our career where we can both complement each other, for example, she has a talent management company and I am one of her talents and her company manages me. When she has briefs I can support, I give her creative ideas to help with the execution and together, I’d like to believe we are a very formidable team. We understand that yes, we  are a couple, we must also create room for individual success stories as well as success stories for us as a unit.

Do you feel more fulfilled in your career path? because I feel more fulfilled in entertainment and acting and also telling stories. I feel more fulfilled in arts than in engineering. Am I finding that fulfilment right now ? Yes. And the truth is that I am only just beginning, there’s more ahead of me and also more for me to offer.

You transitioned from oil and gas into acting and you are killing it, did you have any background in acting before the transition?

I did have some background in acting although most of my training was not formal, it was informal. My training was mostly acting in drama groups and clubs in secondary school and also in the university, I did some acting in church. My acting was mostly in drama clubs and church. Even in school, I was a science student and I studied engineering so it was not like I was trained for acting. All the acting I did was in extra curricular activities.

Has your wife’s presence in the media influenced your career one way or the other?

I would say yes, my wife’s career has positively influenced my career as an actor. She’s always on hand to advise me and help me make better decisions in jobs that I accept. Like I said earlier, her company manages me so there is more structure to my career and I’m generally just making better choices.

Does your wife have issues with you kissing the opposite sex in movies ?

I’ve answered this question a million times before. She met me as an actor and she appreciates the fact that I’m a professional actor and she does not have issues with my roles.

You are also a very good event host, how did you discover that side of you?

I started hosting events as far back as my days in university where I would host shows and events at church so I have had many years to practise and I think I’m only now expressing it at this level because I have had time to practise. I think acting also helps to get on stage because you can flip your hat and go from who you are in real life to acting as an event host and engaging with your audience and being great at it.

Which would you say is easier, stage plays or movies and if stage plays or movies, why?

I don’t think one is easier than the other but one of the unique things about stage is that you are live, there’s no ‘cut’ or opportunity to retake a line that you have lost or a feedback from your director to do it in a certain way or be better. What happens on stage is that you have all your lines and you have to go that way. You have to deliver in that moment but the difference is that you have many weeks of practice and so you practise again and again and then get on stage but for film, you might not get enough time to practise, once you hear ‘action’ ,you go, if you forget your lines or there’s an error, you can always get to do it again after the director yells ‘cut’. For me, there’s no one easier than the other, it’s just different spaces and requirements. The uniqueness of each of these platforms, the energy when you get on stage, the power and the immediate feedback from the responsiveness of the audience and the energy they are giving back, also the closeness of the camera, the camera representing the audience but you still have to give and deliver in such intimacy, it’s raw, potent and beautiful. So I would say they are different, different qualities and platforms.

Seeing how much of a believer you are, have you had to turn down roles that do not align with your faith?

Yes, there are roles that do not align with my values that I would turn down, have turned down and would still turn down. It’s not based on faith alone but also values. Faith is one of my values but there are values that I promote and align with my brand and if these stories or roles do not align with those values, I avoid them and turn them down.

What do you believe is the most challenging aspect of being an actor?

I believe the most challenging aspect of being an actor is how vulnerable you have to be again and again. It’s a calling to vulnerability and burying your soul to your audience and it can be quite demanding, draining and tasking for an actor. You just have to make sure that people you work with respect you and you have to put boundaries in place to protect yourself after being so vulnerable. Oftentimes, no one cares how you deliver but the truth is we actors also have to pay attention to our mental health. You know, after giving so much of yourself to your audience, who takes care of you ? We should pay attention to these things.

Do you believe talent or training is more important to an actor?

I believe they both go together. To get your talent where it ought to be, it needs to be refined through training and hard work. There are two sides of a coin and both must go hand in hand. If you must be the best that you are, you should also train.

  • How Obasa scaled Tobun’s hurdle to become third-term Speaker

How Obasa scaled Tobun’s hurdle to become third-term Speaker

The lawmaker representing the Agege 1 constituency of Lagos State at the Lagos State House of Assembly, Mudashiru Obasa, has been reelected as Speaker of the House for the third term. Assistant Editor, ‘Dare Odufowokan, writes on his emergence as the longest serving Speaker of the oldest State legislature in the country.

For Rt. Honourable Mudashiru Ajayi Obasa, becoming the Speaker of the prestigious Lagos State House of Assembly for a third term is not the only record he currently holds as a legislator. He is also the longest serving state legislator in Nigeria, having won election into the state legislative house first in 2003 and has remained in the House ever since then.

Last week, Obasa was reelected as the Speaker of the Assembly for a third term. His reelection followed weeks of uncertainty as another All Progressives Congress (APC) member of the assembly, Abiodun Tobun, who represents Epe Constituency1, had declared his intention to contest for the speakership of the 10th Assembly. The Epe-born politician had been selling his candidature to members.

There were insinuations that the new assembly had been divided by Tobun’s ambition. Sources close to the fourth term lawmaker had insisted that Tobun would not step down for anybody as he was convinced that he was the man to provide leadership for the assembly at this crucial time. “Tobun is determined and he enjoys the support of many of us,” a lawmaker from Lagos East had said.

Tobun, the first Lawmaker from Epe to be elected for four consecutive terms, is also a history maker in his own right. After weeks of speculations, Tobun finally informed his colleagues including Obasa, of his intention to run for the Speakership, during the induction ceremony for new members which took place at Marriott Hotel, GRA, Ikeja last month.

According to promoters of Tobun’s ambition, he is a well respected lawmaker who is also one of the most active members of the House. “Hon. Tobun is a mentor to many of his colleagues, especially the younger ones. He is a versatile legislator who contributes extensively to debates on the floor of the House. He is known to be active during committee and oversight assignments,” a source had claimed.

Thus, expectations that Obasa will have a smooth unopposed ride to his third stint, as Speaker, became dimmed. But Obasa, being the political gladiator that he is, did not betray any fear. According to his close aides, he was unmoved by the challenge posed by Tobun. Rather, he concentrated on his ambition to lead the Lagos Assembly again. “He merely saw it as another political contest,” a source recalled.

    A third term

With the above scenario in place till the day of inauguration, many looked forward to a fierce struggle for the Speaker’s seat. The address of Governor Babajide Sanwoolu on the day he pronounced the 10th Assembly further gave an indication that Obasa would be challenged for the job of the Speaker. Many eyes were on Honourable Tobun and his supporters as the proceedings progressed.

“I want to assure you all that as your governor, I stand neutral in the selection process. My interest lies in how we can work together, irrespective of who assumes what role, to fulfill our shared responsibilities to the people of Lagos State. Each one of you, regardless of position, brings unique value and perspective to this Assembly, and it is through our collective efforts that we will achieve the extraordinary.

“The emergence of the speaker and other principal officers is a decision entrusted to you by the constitution. I trust that you will carry out this duty with the highest level of integrity and respect for democratic principles,” the governor has said as he insisted that he had no preferred candidate for the seat of the Speaker of the legislative arm of government.

But last week, Obasa was unanimously re-elected as Speaker after a proclamation of the 10th Assembly by Governor Sanwo-Olu. He was nominated by Hon. Temitope Adewale, and his nomination was seconded by Hon.Sylvester Ogunkelu who represents Epe Constituency 2. There were no further nominations for the Speakership as Obasa surprisingly coasted home unopposed.

The lawmakers also elected Honourable Mojisola Lasbat Meranda, representing Apapa Constituency 1 as the deputy Speaker. She served as the Chief Whip of the 9th Assembly under the Speakership of Hon. Obasa. Meranda is a third term lawmaker having been in the House of Assembly since 2015 when she was elected for the first term.

Noheem Adams, the Deputy Majority Leader in the ninth Assembly, was elected as the new Majority Leader while Hon. Adedamola Kasunmu was elected the Deputy Majority Leader. Mojeed Fatai who represents Ibeju Lekki Constituency 1 was elected as the Chief Whip while Hon. David Setonji was elected the Deputy Chief Whip.

In spite of the challenge posed by Tobun, by the time the ninth session of the Lagos State House of Assembly officially ended indications that Obasa may return as Speaker were rife and obvious. Political observers claim the Speaker must have pulled all the necessary strings and pressed the needed buttons to ensure that he retained the love and support of the majority of his old and new colleagues.

Before the day of inauguration, returning lawmakers and lawmakers-elect on more than one occasion, declared support for Obasa to retain his seat as Speaker in the 10th Assembly. And as the day drew nearer, less was being heard from Honourable Tobun’s camp amidst insinuations that he may have been prevailed upon to forget his Speakership ambition and back Obasa’s return.

    Signs of a return

At the valedictory session of the 9th Assembly, old and new lawmakers spoke of their support for Obasa, who presided over the session. According to Hon. Mojeed Fatai, both new members and the returning lawmakers had resolved that Obasa should lead the House again. “Mudashiru Obasa is going to speak again in the 10th Assembly. He is a man we have all resolved to lead us. When we started four years ago, all of us were elected from the APC and it was because of his effort and the way he handled the House.

“The leadership of the ninth Assembly ensured a cordial relationship among members. Today, we have 38 members from the APC coming in the 10th Assembly. The success is because of Obasa’s leadership capability. He is the best for the House and we want him to continue.” Fatai, who served as chairman of the Committee on Public Accounts in the 9th Assembly, said.

Meranda, the new Deputy Speaker, while declaring her support for the Speaker, openly boasted that Obasa cannot be rivaled in the leadership of the House, said, “I give it to the Rt Hon Speaker Obasa for being able to coordinate 40 members of different backgrounds, different thinking and religions and even different tribes because we had Hon. Jude Idimogu.”

“Obasa is the best man for the job. The experience, capacity and leadership skills are there and I don’t see anybody matching up to him. He will be returning as a sixth timer and I don’t think any of us is on the same pedestal with him. I wish him all the best in the 10th Assembly because he is going to lead us again. He is the man for the job. He is a fantastic man.”

A new lawmaker, Oladipo Ajomale, who represents Oshodi Isolo 2, while speaking on behalf of the new members, said he and his colleagues have resolved to support Obasa as Speaker of the 10th Assembly. There are twenty new members in the 40-member Assembly. According to him, Obasa’s reemergence as Speaker was already a done deal as at that time.

“I can assure you that the 20 of us who are new are fully in support of Speaker Obasa for the 10th Assembly because we have learnt and understudied and we know that this is a man who has proven himself over and over again to be the best man for the job. Logically thinking about it, he is the most experienced in the House. So it doesn’t make sense for anyone to come and do trial by error. I stand with him fully and all of us who are new also support the Speaker to speak for us at the 10th Assembly,” he said back then.

    A vote of confidence

Few days before the valedictory session, the Chairman of the Lagos House of Assembly Committee on Transportation, Hon. Adewale Temitope, had said that 39 of the 40 lawmakers-elect wre solidly behind Obasa to be elected as the 10th Assembly Speaker. He said the collective endorsement of Obasa followed a resolution reached by lawmakers-elect to have the Speaker continue with “the good works he started in 2015 and sustained in the 9th Assembly.”

“We now have a Lagos Assembly that other states visit to learn from. We have bills that have been studied by the National Assembly. We have laws that have shaped our State in favour of the people. Through his leadership style, lawmakers are now, more than before, closer to their constituents because we see him living in the midst of his people in Agege and making sure he reaches out to every individual that seeks his attention.

“Lagos cannot afford not to have him as Speaker if the fortunes of true governance enjoyed by the State must be sustained. Obasa is a stabiliser and has sustained the peace and unity in the House. He is a very accommodating leader who is ready to learn and relearn. Obasa has defended the legislative arm of government so well. Today, we have one of the best Houses of Assembly in Nigeria because we have practised all that others are just asking for. He has moved the House from where it was before to be above the common standards of excellence.

“I can tell you there is nobody who will challenge him successfully. If you are talking about loyalty, he is very loyal to the party, he is loyal to the elders of Lagos and above all loyal to Asiwaju Bola Tinubu. In all, he continues to uphold the tenets of democracy. This is a man who has practised everything you call legislature and he has been impacting knowledge on every one of us. Moreover, we are going into the 10th Assembly with a House that has many new members.

“As a result of this, he has more jobs to do. He needs to train a lot of people so that the tenets of the legislature and the institution can continue to stand alone in the face of separation of powers,” Adewale added. And as it happened, it was Adewale who nominated Obasa for reelection to the position of the Speaker of the 10th Assembly of the Lagos State House of Asembly last week to complete his return for an unprecedented third term in office.

    Renewed vigour

Celebrating his re-election as Speaker of the Lagos State House of Assembly Speaker on his Twitter handle, Obasa, appealed to his colleagues in the House to prioritise the welfare of their constituents. “Lagos State is a great state with great potentials and we have a responsibility to harness these potentials and maximise them for the benefit of our people. We must prioritise the welfare of our constituents and ensure that our policies are geared towards meeting their needs,” he urged.

Appreciating God and his fellow lawmakers, Obasa said he is poised to continue to offer credible and all encompassing leadership to the legislature in Lagos State. “History was made yesterday as I set the pace as the first legislator to be elected a record six times and the first to be Speaker for three consecutive terms in Nigeria,” Obasa wrote. I humbly extend my appreciation to the leadership of our great party, the All Progressives Congress (APC).

“I thank President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, GCFR, Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu and his deputy, Dr Kadiri Obafemi Hamzat, the Governor’s Advisory Council (GAC), my constituents in Agege for their continued support. We will ensure that we continue to uphold the legacy of excellence for which the Lagos State House of Assembly is known,” the Speaker said.

Earlier n his acceptance speech after his reelection as Speaker, Obasa said Lagos is a “Yoruba land” and that laws passed by the assembly will now be translated to Yoruba language. He added that the assembly will ensure that laws are made to protect the interests of indigenous people of Lagos, adding that lawmakers will “reverse all that is reversible to protect the interest of the indigenes”.

“Lagos is a Yoruba land as against the assertions of some people that it is a no-man’s land. Therefore, part of our legislative agenda is to ensure the translation of laws passed by this House to Yoruba Language. We also aim at achieving our collective goals of creating a robust legislative framework that protects the interest of our people.

“Going forward in this wise, we are going to employ all legislative instruments for the support of the indigenes of Lagos. There would be laws and resolutions in the areas of economy and commerce, property and titles,” he said.He also said that under his leadership, all members will be carried along and given equal opportunity to contribute towards the development of Lagos State.

Davido speaks on worst experience as an artiste

MULTI-AWARD winning artist and record label executive, David ‘Davido’ Adeleke has given a hint into what he considers as his worst experience as an artsite.

The DMW boss singled out his eight months stay in the United States of America after being signed on to Sony Music in 2016 as a really challenging period in his career.

He noted that he felt the need to return to Nigeria after discovering his career was suffering decline.

“I remember telling them (Sony Music team) that the producers you guys put me in with are cool but I need to go home. I was in America for almost seven months,” said Davido in an interview with N.O.R.E. and DJ EFN on the TV show Drinks Champ.

He said, “I woke up one day and I was like, I need to go home. So, I just got on a plane and went back home. My brother, two weeks from when I got back home, ‘If’ blew up.

“Every artist can go through it, that point when you are so high, you’re untouchable, and then down the line you start fading. Every artist goes through that. That is the worst thing ever. I have had that period in my life and I was like, nah, I need to go back. Immediately I got back home, I got back my mojo.”

KUNLE AFOD: I have wealth in people

NOLLYWOOD actor and producer Kunle Afod has opined that he believes in wealth of people he has supported rather than wealth in currency.

He made this known in a recent chat with The Nation saying, “Like Davido said, ‘We rise by helping others.’ The number of people you help or assist is your wealth, not material things. People who made it through you are your wealth, not money in your bank.”

The actor, who got his major breakout role in the Nollywood classic ‘Owo Blow,’ still believes the struggle to eke out a living from one’s sweat is a decent existence.

Afod also opened up on his growing up experiences saying, “Growing up was a bit rough and tough, but I believe experience is the best teacher in life. Let me use this medium to thank my mother, Iya Nurse, as we fondly called her. She single-handedly takes good care of us—three brothers and a girl. All my siblings went to boarding schools.

“As the first child, I later went to stay with my uncle, and when I came back, I went to Command Secondary School, Jos. The journey was not so easy, but we thank God. After school, I ventured into acting, and I’ve been struggling to survive. I know that God will shine His light one day. Being famous doesn’t mean you aren’t still struggling. You won’t want to fall. You won’t want to fall behind when others are growing.”
