The governor said ‘the award is more symbolic because it is being conferred on Fayemi after he had left office, which testifies of his stellar performance in public service’.

Oyebanji also noted that the impact by Fayemi in Human Rights, National Integration and African Security Development, which is part of the consideration for the award, is visible for all to see as the former governor distinguished himself in those areas in his public service trajectory.

He hoped the latest honour would spur Fayemi to carry out more selfless service to Ekiti, Nigeria, the global community and humanity in general in years to come.

    US-based surgeon joins Alaafin race

A United States-based surgeon, Prince Ajibade Adeladan, has joined the race to the Alaafin of Oyo’s throne.

Adeladan, who spoke to The Nation in Ibadan yesterday, said he is ready to abandon his thriving career to become the next Alaafin. According to him, ‘mounting the throne of my forefathers will be a dream fulfilled’.

Dr Adeladan said the Alaafin throne should be occupied by a charismatic prince who has a good sense of history and good reputation.

The prince, who is a psychiatrist, neurologist and addiction medicine practitioner, said his focus would be to elevate the status of the throne higher, and transform the ancient town through medicare and agriculture.

He said: “With all my experience, with how I have seen how things are done, though I have been in the medical field, I am very much interested in agriculture because I worked in Nebraska. Nebraska is an agriculture state. I have interacted with farmers, I interacted with ranchers and I come to Nigeria, those things are not there, those things are not readily available, farms are small. In Nebraska, you are driving like 100 miles, you see maize, wheat for more than 100 miles.

“So, I said to myself, we can do all these too in Nigeria. We may not be able to build planes, build rockets or submarines, but we can at least do all those things. We should be able to generate electricity; we should be able to grow enough food with the fertile land that God has blessed us with. And now I have the opportunity to champion that if enthroned as the Alaafin. We will achieve at a larger scale with the throne than doing it alone as an individual, though I have started it as an individual.”

  • Ndidi’s weekly wage may stop Celtic’s interest

Ndidi’s weekly wage may stop Celtic’s interest

Brendan Rodgers has been appointed as manager at Celtic for a second stint with the Scottish giants.
Rodgers enjoyed a great deal of success at Park Head from 2016 to 2019 before making the move to Leicester.

But the Northern Irishman is now looking to improve the first team squad in Glasgow and has turned his attention to his former club.

Wilfred Ndidi has emerged as a potential transfer target for Celtic this summer, with the midfielder’s future in England in doubt.

A big stumbling block in any deal to Scotland could be the player’s current wage package.
According to the Daily Record, Ndidi earns a weekly salary worth up to £75,000, and it remains unclear whether the Scottish champions could afford such a deal.

It was also only 12 months ago that then-Leicester manager Rodgers claimed that it would take more than £50 million to sign the midfielder amid interest from Premier League rivals.

While Ndidi does now only have 12 months remaining on his contract, it is easy to imagine how the Foxes would still value him quite highly.

Ndidi had a poor campaign as Leicester suffered relegation, but he has still proven to be a key player at the King Power during his time at the club.

Ndidi is also a potential target for Saudi Arabia’s current spending spree this summer.

At the age of 26, it remains to be seen whether he would want to move away from European football at this stage of his career.
But Al Shabab are looking to make a tempting offer to persuade Ndidi to make the jump.

Naija Super 8 : Katsina’s Abdallah predicts tough test against Kano Pillars

Katsina United head coach, Usman Abdallah, has described the Naija Super 8 play-off derby with Kano Pillars, as an equivalent of their Nigeria Professional Football League rivalry.

Both clubs currently ply their trade in the Nigeria National League with Abdallah saying that despite their current status, the North-West derby with Kano Pillars is always a big fixture.

“Playing against Kano Pillars is like playing an NPFL team. They are still a strong side despite playing in the second division like us,” the former Enyimba coach said.

Abdallah noted that the Naija Super 8 play-offs is a good avenue to test his team before the NNL playoff, adding Katsina United’s playing personnel is a work in progress at the moment.

“The Naija Super 8 play-offs in Eket is a good fixture for us before the NNL playoff. You have to beat teams to stay in the running. At present, we are a developing team because we lost around 60 – 70% of first-team players when the club was relegated from the NPFL.

“So I had to bring in players from the B-team and now we have about 60% of locals who have never played professional league football before. Right now we are developing players who can play at this level,” he said.
The former Wikki Tourists coach was reluctant to give details on his team’s chances but stated that “we’re ready for the match.”

Katsina United will go head-to-head with Kano Pillars at the Eket Township Stadium on 25 June. The winner of the match will represent the zone in the main Naija Super 8 tournament at the Mobolaji Johnson Arena in Lagos, from 7-16 July.

Katsina United vs Kano Pillars and other Naija Super 8 play-off matches will be live on SuperSport Football (DStv Channel 205 & GOtv Channel 61), SuperSport Variety 4 (DStv Channel 209), and SuperSport Select 2 (GOtv Channel 64).

Naija Super 8 is organised by Flykite Productions in partnership with MultiChoice Nigeria and sponsors, MTN, Hero Lager, DStv, GOtv, SuperSport, Moniepoint, Pepsi and Custodian Assurance.

  • Defensive nonsense

    Defensive nonsense

It was a rambling defence of the Department of State Services (DSS) by its spokesperson, Peter Afunanya. The federal security agency was, in a manner of speaking, fighting back. But its statement exposed the reality that it was a losing battle.

“Recently, about five major newspapers called out the DSS for bashing of sorts,” the agency observed. “The papers, which used their platforms to express varied views about the modus operandi of the Service include VanguardDaily TrustThe SunTribune and Punch.”

The DSS said: “While Vanguard’s piece on 2nd June 2023 was “Dousing the DSS/EFCC Feud,” Daily Trust, on 6th June 2023, published an editorial titled “The DSS Must Conduct Its Duties as a Secret Service.” The Sun, on 7th June, published “The Needless DSS/EFCC Fracas” while Tribune on 8th June 2023 wrote on “The EFCC/DSS Confrontation.” Similarly, on 14th June 2023, Punch featured “DSS, Others Need Radical Reforms.”

It claimed that the editorials “looked every inch planted or organised,” described them as hatchet jobs, and accused the papers of “predictable bias and patterns.”

But the facts of the matter that triggered the mentioned editorials were not in the security agency’s favour. Dramatically, the DSS had yet again demonstrated lawlessness when its agents prevented personnel of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) from entering their Lagos office on May 30.

EFCC spokesperson Wilson Uwujaren said in a statement that its operatives arrived at their office, No. 15 Awolowo Road, Ikoyi on the morning of May 30, and were “denied entry by agents of the Department of State Services, DSS, who had barricaded the entrance with armoured personnel carriers.”

He added that the action was “strange to the commission given that we have cohabited with the DSS in that facility for 20 years without incident.”  He also said: “By denying operatives access to their offices, the commission’s operations at its largest hub with over 500 personnel, hundreds of exhibits, and many suspects in detention” were disrupted.

The alleged disruption affected cases scheduled for court hearings, and suspects who had been invited for questioning, he explained, noting that the incident had “wider implications for the nation’s fight against economic and financial crimes.”

It took the intervention of President Bola Tinubu to normalise the situation. Tinubu’s spokesman, Tunde Rahman, said he had directed the DSS to “immediately vacate” the office of the EFCC, after reports of the incident were brought to his attention.

It was abnormal and unacceptable that a government agency acted like a bully against another government agency. That’s what the DSS did in this case. So, what was Afunanya talking about?

  • NNMDA boss promises to revamp herbal medicine development, patronage

NNMDA boss promises to revamp herbal medicine development, patronage

The newly-appointed Director-General and Chief Executive Officer of the Nigeria Natural Medicine Development Agency (NNMDA), Prof Martins Emeje, has vowed to use his accumulated wealth of experience and several years of acquired expertise in drug research and manufacturing to reposition herbal medicine research, development and patronage with a view to integrating traditional medicines into overall healthcare delivery system in the country.

Emeje, who was the head of Ultra-Modern Biology/Chemistry Laboratory in the National Institute of Pharmaceutical Research and Development (NIPRD) before joining NNMDA as D-G in May, made the promise when Pharm Onyeka Onyeibor, Managing Director of Evans Baroque Limited, a leading pharmaceutical healthcare company with global partnerships and a vast presence in West Africa, paid a courtesy visit to the agency’s head office last Friday in Lagos.

A distinguished professor of Drug Delivery and Nanomedicine, Emeje said he came into office fully prepared with a ready roadmap and action plan to help Nigeria reposition the traditional medicine sub-sector. After itemising achievements and breakthroughs NNMDA has recorded so far in herbal medicine research and development, Emeje said research findings recognised by the World Health Organisation have showed that nothing less than 70 per cent of people in the developing world rely on herbal medicines for their overall wellness. He added that, since millions of Nigerians depend on natural medicines because of affordability, availability, insufficiency of orthodox medicine, and religious/cultural beliefs, it means that herbal medicine market is a goldmine waiting to be tapped in order to improve people’s quality of life and boost the nation’s economy to the boot. The NNMDA boss listed products such as Amarus Herbal Tea for prevention and management of malaria, herbal mosquito repellant, dual action indoor residual spray and air freshener formulated as an insecticide and air freshener, as well as Ocimum Herbal Tea for management of diabetes, among others, produced by the agency for public consumption.

In his slide presentation witnessed by Evans Baroque Limited team as well as the agency staff and management, the NNMDA boss said he applied for the job because  he passionately believes that the traditional medicine subsector holds the master key to the much-desired future of Nigeria’s healthcare delivery and economic greatness. While analysing the opportunities inherent in the sector, Prof Emeje noted that natural medicine, with its associated bio-resources, is a strategic sector that can be used as a tool for the overall development of the country, starting from the natural improvement of health, simulation of small and medium scale agro-business, small scale product  industries in health, raw materials and a feedstock to the global knowledge economy in research and product development.

In his response, Onyeibor tasked the agency to work on some of the challenges impeding the development of the sector so that resources such as traditional medicine knowledge products and technology can be transformed into innovative and commercialisable products for the prevention of diseases and benefit of Nigerians. He also promised to collaborate with the agency in the area of product research funding and training, among other possible partnerships.

Also, NNMDA, in another meeting with the United States Pharmacopoeia (USP), the agency scored the bull’s eye. The meeting ended with the USP agreeing to partner the agency in the development of dietary supplements using indigenous medicinal plants resources like Moringa and others; while NNMDA is to coordinate the development of phyto-pharmacopoeia in Africa as the agency plans to expand its ISO 17025 accreditation to cover more scope – all aided by the USP team, which vows to support the aforementioned plans and give all necessary guidance in achieving success. In another strategic engagement meeting with Aberdeen Commercial, the agency has secured a promise, which involves Aberden to develop standard operational roadmaps covering short, medium and long term goals, and also carry out intensive in-house training for all NNMDA staff on standard operation.

The new NNMDA boss obtained his BPharm (with distinction) from Ahmadu Bello University, and MPharm and Ph.D. from the University of Nigeria (UNN), where he received the best Ph.D. award and was enlisted as UNN’s “Face of Research.” He established the first nanomedicine centre in Nigeria and was the pioneer head of the intellectual property and technology transfer as well as the WIPO’s technology innovation and support centre (TISC). The D-G, who has published more than 150 articles and patents, is also the Head of R&D at NIPRD; he holds a visiting professor position at Nnamdi Azikiwe University.

Health insurance: HMOs promise to work with
    Tinubu to implement new Act

Health Management Organisations (HMOs) have agreed to work with President Bola Tinubu to implement the new Health Act. The new Health Act stipulates that health insurance be made mandatory for all Nigerians. Consequently, it is expected that all Nigerians, including those in the informal sector, are enrolled on health insurance. The old Act only made it compulsory for those in the public sector.

Speaking at the annual general meeting of the Ultimate Health Management Services (UHMS), a leading HMO in the country, Dr. Lekan Ewenla, Managing Director of Ultimate Health, said HMOs are prepared to work with the new administration to ensure that the insurance scheme works. “We are going to, as an organisation and as a body in the health insurance space, work closely with the government to ensure that we support and we achieve what we are going to achieve. So what the regulator is doing now is developing the official framework to ensure that the managing nature of this law is not just left on the paper on the table. What the Federal Government has done in the last five years was to begin to address healthcare from the perspective of demand and supply such that now they have deployed fund on a yearly basis.”

Also speaking at the event, Mrs. Angela Ajala, Chairman, Ultimate Health, said the organisation is working with relevant stakeholders to bring everybody on board. “We brought up the fact that the business is green and is doing well, especially with the bill, which has opened up the market for leading HMOs to make sure that every Nigerian is captured in the health management’s care and that no Nigerian should ever be sick and denied treatment because he/she has no money to access healthcare. And so we’re taking it beyond what it is now; we are reaching out to all the nooks and crannies. And we’re meeting with the relevant stakeholders to bring everybody on board – students, workers, professionals – but get to everybody; that’s our target.”

Read Also: Five-point observations to President Tinubu

The Tinubu administration inherited decades of failed promises to shore up national funding for health to at least 15 per cent of the annual national budget, with a primary healthcare system that is largely decrepit, general hospitals that are short-staffed and of poor capacity, and teaching hospitals that are badly hit by unabated exit of essential health workers out of the country. In Nigeria, roughly 90 per cent of the population are overburdened by out-of-pocket expenditure, a sad reality that manifests more when treating chronic illnesses with exorbitant cost of treatment.

During the campaigns, President Tinubu had promised holistic actions that would focus on strengthening healthcare systems, promoting preventive healthcare, widening access to improved quality of care and ensuring access to essential medicines and skilled healthcare professionals. To achieve the goal of universal health coverage, he has set a target to cover a minimum of 87 million or 40 percent of Nigerians within two years by implementing the mandatory national health insurance scheme. The planned expansion in healthcare coverage, he said, would be achieved by increasing the financing available for the Basic Health Care Provision Fund and the Vulnerable Group Fund that was recently established by former President Muhammadu Buhari to insure the health of vulnerable Nigerians.

    Varsity walks for healthy living

The event, which kicked off at Periwinkle Estate Junction started with dance, aerobics with the theme ‘A walk for the Nation’.

Rev. Augustine Ebido, member of the school’s Board of Trustees and director of its education foundation, said the initiative was a wonderful experience.

”The inspiration behind this walk is personal because since I came back after COVID, I began to see signs, a lot of deaths. Young people dying. I have buried so many young people as a priest, it breaks my heart and there is no statistics”.

He added: “There is no way to find out what is the reason for this. I am not talking about older people dying. I am talking about young people dying. We need to know that each one of us can do something to build a better country.”

“Government alone”, he stressed “cannot do everything for us. We forget that we are agents of change for our country.

“Somebody is not going to build it for us, we will build it ourselves. So, the university thought that there is something we can do as an institution to create awareness for our people.”

If young people are dying and many don’t know the reason why they are dying, it is better to follow reasonable cause of action like exercise. “They have proven to be very helpful to prolong life and help your cardiovascular health. I personally feel that much of this deaths have simple cholesterol problems because many of them are either heart attack or stroke”.
