Our New Yam Festival is best – Ijumu monarch

The people of Ogidi in Ijumu Local Government Area of Kogi State yesterday declared that their annual New Yam festival has assumed the status of the most important cultural festival happening in the month of June.

In an opening remark, the traditional ruler of the town, Oba Rabiu Oladimeji Sule, asked the people to continue to honour the annual event with their presence.

Overwhelmed by the large turnout of indigenes, home and abroad, the Oba said “this is the best festival. You cannot find another one better in any other place in Nigeria.”

He solicited the presence of all sons and daughters of the agrarian town to always represent the town well and espouse the culture of the people.

In his speech, the director general of the festival and former editor of the Sunday Times, Tunde Ipinmisho, noted that the Yam Festival is a beautiful moment for folks to come together.

“It’s a time to show love, dance together, feel at home and be amongst friends and family.”

Ipinmisho who ensured the commencement of the festival in 2006, expressed gratitude to God that years after, the dream has continued to help the community to remain in love and cohesion.

Culture activist and Nigeria’s greatest adire and batik creator, Nike Okundaye, in declaring the yam festival open, thanked farmers and those who worked round the clock to keep the people together as one.

She also went round the crowded arena displaying one giant yam as a testimonial.

Dignitaries who came from far and near to grace the occasion, include prominent politicians, academics, top civil servants, market women and all.

The presence of epoch masquerades and cultural troupes from over seven states in Nigeria also added colour to the festival.

  • ITTF BOSS PETRA SORLING : I want to inspire other women to the top

ITTF BOSS PETRA SORLING : I want to inspire other women to the top

When Petra Sorling was elected the eighth President of the International Table Tennis Federation (ITTF) on November 24, 2021, the Swede made history as the first female to head the 97-year-old table tennis governing body. Today, she is one of three women in the world chairing international sports federations – World Triathlon’s President, Marisol Casado and the International Golf Federation’s Annika Sörenstam are the others. The 52-year-old Malmo-born administrator rose through the ranks at ITTF to become president, having joined the Executive Committee of the world body in 2009. In line with her campaign promises, Sorling has brought several innovations into the sport in a bid to make table tennis rank at par with the world’s most popular sports. On May 31, 2023, at the 47th General Assembly of Association of Summer Olympic International Federations (ASOIF) held in Lausanne-Switzerland, Sorling was elected ASOIF Council Member. She is the first ITTF President in the 40-year history of ASOIF to join its governing body. On the side-lines of the just concluded ITTF World Championships in Durban, South Africa, Sorling told OLALEKAN OKUSAN that women should aspire to break new grounds and make indelible marks in sports leadership.

Petra Sorling is a former table tennis player who rose through the ranks from playing to coaching and now to governing table tennis at the global level. Gentle and unassuming, Sorling has continued to endear herself to the global sports community, which recently elected her a council member of the Association of Summer Olympic International Federations (ASOIF).

The ITTF president recalled her playing days, the gender biases she encountered and how she came to be at the top of sports administration:

FROM TABLE TENNIS PLAYER TO PRESIDENT

“My journey actually started as a table tennis player, and I was in a club where mainly the female team was the best. So, we had one team in the highest division and one in the first and the men’s team were in the fourth division. That was actually quite perfect because in the training room, we were on equal level. I always felt our team was well taken care of and in the 1990s, I started to play in a much bigger club – Malmo Football Club – which had at that time a table tennis section.

“Then, I realised how it is. When you come first to the venue, you take the best table and the men’s team come and they tell you to change to another table because they are better. That started something in me. I felt like I wanted to change this. So, I started to be more active. Also, I took on the position of a coach. I was a coach for the young boys in the Swedish national team. I saw the differences. I am never one to fight for positions; I like to show results and get a good reputation. I can still see that it is going very slowly so maybe we have to push that process a bit.”

Sorling continued: “I became a committee member in the Swedish Table Tennis Association. From there, I became a board member, and I had a good mentor which is what I always say; you have to surround yourself with good sponsors. I call them sponsors – the people that speak positively about you when you are not in the room. They motivated me and I was pushed in the direction of the European Table Tennis Union (ETTU) Women Working Group to encourage more females and through that group, I became a member of the ITTF Working Group.

“Then, I became a board member in the ETTU, and I was asked to run for ITTF Vice President in 2009. Since then, I have been here. My plan was not to become the ITTF President. My plan was to make a change, always, and to get results from what I do. It is very important to enjoy what you are doing. From one thing to the other and here I am, ITTF’s first female President. I’m extremely proud to be the leader of such a sport as ours, which is table tennis.”

    TEAM SPIRIT

Sorling takes the team approach to leading the ITTF. She stated of her administrative style: “I always say that I am in a very big table tennis team. I cannot do very much alone but with a good team, board members, other elected people and our staff. Together, we are moving table tennis forward and that is something I’m very proud of and I would like to continue to do,” she said.

The ITTF president believes that women must be ready to pick up the gauntlet and administer sports – just like their male counterparts. “I was at the FIFA Congress, and I was impressed by their Secretary General, Fatma Samoura. She has been doing an amazing job there. I hope that I can inspire and be a role model for other females to cross the borders because there has to be more of us. There are very few female international federation Presidents. There are only three of us while all the other sports around have male presidents. We are 50/50 in society and there is a big potential for both genders to excel,” she observed.

    ADVISE FOR ASPIRING WOMEN LEADERS

For women aspiring to leadership positions, Sorling has this to say: “My short answer to every woman aspiring for a leadership role is to be affirmative in their role. From my experience, many females when they get the chance to do something think they have to know how to do something before they say ‘yes’ and very many men just say ‘yes’. I’m sure that if you get called up to do something, somebody has already thought you had the quality to do whatever it is.

“So, my first recommendation or advice is say ‘yes’ because you can do as good as anyone else. If you get the question, you are already targeted as someone that has the capacity. Believe me, I have met many men who said ‘yes’, who are not more qualified than the females that said ‘no’. The females say ‘I have to find out what the task is. How can I do it? How many hours does it take? What should I prepare?’ That is the difference I see between men and women. I’m not saying everybody is like that but in general, say ‘yes’ when you get the question. Also, open doors for others to say ‘yes’. It is very important to support each other. I think we can help each other to make it possible. That is my advice. I will say ‘Say Yes’ and surround yourself with good sponsors who speak positively about you when you are not in the room. That is also very important.”

    DURBAN 2023

Sorling, who presided over the 2023 World Championships, held in Durban, South Africa – the first to be staged in Africa since 1939 – described the tournament as an avenue to showcase the rich culture cum warm hospitality of the continent.

Her words:  “I have been in Durban for a week before the tournament began. It is really nice to come before the event starts. You can see the hard work behind the scenes, the dedication, and the motivation. I’m really very happy for this World Championships. We did have to wait for a very long time to come back to Africa and now Durban, South Africa has really treated us very well.

“This World Championships in Durban really delivered on the high-quality level in terms of organisation: the venue, the food, transportation, and the best remark you can get is when the players are happy. I have met several teams and they are satisfied compared to the World Championships before. It is really great here in Durban. It met our expectations and delivered even more.”

Sorling added: “The last time we held the World Championship in Africa was 1939 in Cairo, Egypt. We planned, for many years, to come back, and move the World Championships around the globe. Lately, it has taken place in Asia and Europe. We have changed the format of the championship to make it more possible to organise it around the world.

“South Africa won the bid against Germany. It was clear that our 227 members wanted to go to South Africa. It is great to see that we have done it the way we wanted it done. We wanted to have the event exactly the same way we had it in Europe and Asia. Here in Africa, you feel the unique atmosphere, the African flavour, especially in the opening ceremony and all the activities around.”

The ITTF chief underscores the importance of Africa in the global table tennis family. She stated: “Africa within the ITTF, with its 54 members, is a big continent, an important continent within the ITTF family. I can see here that taking on the World Championships will mean a lot for the future as well. It shows that Africa can deliver high-level events. You have already done the youth events in terms of World Table Tennis (WTT) and you will also have an event in Nigeria which is coming in Lagos. I’m sure that there will be more opportunities.

“Also, I can see that the neighbouring countries around South Africa also feel more confident to take on events. It is very important for the future. When you have events at home, you make our sports visible, the kids come and watch, and hopefully they will grab the bat and start to enjoy the beautiful sport of table tennis.”

On what table tennis can learn from other sports, Sorling said: “Of course, we can always learn from other sports. Already, we are doing a lot for our development programme. In the foundation, we are building projects. I was at the African Cup some weeks ago in Nairobi, Kenya. We saw the young Joseph, a very talented player from Uganda and other young players. So, there are many good activities ongoing in Africa. We brought the World Championships here to create a legacy. The ITTF will continue to support Africa’s needs through the 54-member associations. I hope we can do even more through the event here in Durban.”

    BIGGER SPONSORS

Sorling added: “We are working hard to attract more and bigger sponsors. We believe that table tennis is the best sport. We say table tennis for life and that is not only a motto, it is how we see our sport because you can start as a very young and talented kid or just playing for fun, and you can play happily on the big stage. Recently, we had World Master Championship, and all the players were 90 plus, coming from Japan, and they were great. So that’s why I think our sport can really benefit us and the companies relating to us. I believe if we continue to work as hard as we do, we will also attract the big sponsors to table tennis because we really have a good product. Table tennis is an amazing sport.”

Apart from running table tennis at the global level, Sorling remains active in the corporate world. She disclosed: “I still run a company, but part time and I am involved in some foundation board duties. When you do things that you really think you can contribute, it energises you. So, I really enjoy what I’m doing, it is hard work and not easy at times being the only female but now, the world is changing. The Athletics Commission is represented by two individuals – one from each gender. So now we are two in the executive board and there will be more.”

Kyrgios: I contemplated suicide after Wimbledon loss

Nick Kyrgios has revealed he ended up in a psychiatric ward following a loss at Wimbledon in 2019 because he felt suicidal.

The tennis star went to a hospital in London to “figure out my problems” after the loss to Rafael Nadal four years ago at Wimbledon, where he wore a compression sleeve over his right arm during his singles matches to conceal his scars from self-harming.

“I was genuinely contemplating suicide,” Kyrgios said, in the latest season of Netflix’s tennis documentary series Break Point.

“I lost at Wimbledon. I woke up and my dad was sitting on the bed, full-blown crying. That was the big wake-up call for me.

“I was like, ‘OK, I can’t keep doing this’. I ended up in a psych ward in London to figure out my problems.”

Filmed prior to his run to the final last year as part of the tennis documentary Point Break, the Australian said that if he managed to win the title, “it’s like a middle finger to everyone”.

It took Novak Djokovic, the best ever, to deny the tour rebel in the 2022 Championships.

A concentration lapse from Kyrgios while in a dominant position in a critical service game is all that really separated the pair in a four-set final memorable for the splendid quality of play.

But the challenge is indisputably greater for the Australian this year if he is to give “the bird” to the tennis world at Wimbledon and, more importantly, claim a grand slam title.

Kyrgios has not played a grand slam match since a five-set loss to Karen Khachanov in a US Open quarter-final nine months ago when the favourite to win the tournament.

The eventual champion was Carlos Alcaraz. That fact alone indicates how well Kyrgios, whose last match came at the Japan Open in October, was playing at the time.

An ongoing knee complaint required surgery and then a toe injury he suffered during an alarming car theft in which his mother had a knife held to her throat slowed his return.

Dressed in a black shirt, shorts and socks, which contrasted with his white hat and shoes, Kyrgios gave a wave as he stepped out in Stuttgart, where he was a semi-finalist last year.

He held a break point in the first game. He also served 11 aces in the opening set.

But his ring rust was evident, most notably on set point when he opted for a drop shot that was easily run down by Yu, who drilled a backhand winner.

What was familiar was Kyrgios’s cursing and complaints, with the colour of the towels earning his wrath early on as he struggled to find his range.

What is concerning is his movement. When the first serve did not go in, and when Kyrgios was engaged in rallies, he looked restricted. He also grabbed for the knee at times.

Yu, who became the first Chinese man to win an ATP Tour title when successful in Dallas in February, seized the decisive break late in the second set and was stronger throughout.

He later posted on social media, saying: “Be patient with me my fans please … It’s a process to get back to where I was.

“I know it’s hard for you to see me perform like today, but I need more time and hopefully can get back to where I was.”

WTT CONTENDER 2023: Top stars impressed by Lagos atmosphere, hospitality

There is no doubt that many Lagos’ first timers for the WTT Contender Series, which comes to a climax today, will leave Nigeria’s shores with good impression of the megacity and the people.  Danish champion Anders Lind could not hide his feeling after surviving a two-set scare in the Qualifying Round 2 of Men’s Singles against Korea’s Seongil Jang.

The  24-year-old Lind got the Lagos table tennis loving fans behind him and rooting for him once they realised he has the fighting spirit to stage a comeback.

Such is the nature of Lagos fans who love great table tennis and players that combines skill with courage.

Ling fell back 2-0 (11-5, 11-9) against the Asian star, only to return to level up the match at 2-2, after winning the third and fourth games at 11-8, 11-6.

In the deciding game, Lind played with a lot of confidence. He did not fidget, even when his opponent took a two points lead.

In his usual style, the Danish star threw the hall into frenzy with his display, which eventually won the fifth game for him at 11-8.

A happy Lind said after the match said the Lagos fans made his day.

He said: “To be down 2-0 and to recover and win a match is always very good. It showed mental strength even though this is not one of my proudest performances this year; I am still very proud that I came back and won this match. Being my first time in Lagos, my experience overall is okay and the people are very polite and friendly.”

Korean player Yang Ha Eun who defeated Yang  Yiyun of China 3-1 in the qualifying round 2 of women’s singles also has good things to say about Lagos and Nigeria in general.

“This is my first time in Lagos, Nigeria and also my first time in Africa so this is a good experience. I also think Nigeria is a country that is good at their sports.”

Serbian Izabella Lupulesku felt the pang of Nigerian fans when she beat Kehinde Oyeniyi 3-0, in the Qualifying Round 2 of Women’s Singles. In the end, though, she was grateful for the pressure, which brought out the best in her.

“It is my first time in Nigeria as I was recently in Durban, South Africa for the World Championships while I had also visited Cape Town as well. Before the match I was a bit stressed because the first match is always very difficult and playing against a Nigerian player as the fans were supporting her. I was a bit under pressure but as the match progressed, I felt better to win the match. I love playing in this kind of atmosphere.”

Like Lupulesku, Jules Rolland of France faced Nigerian player Adeola Oloruntade and fans.

“Playing is very different because people are always supporting players from Nigeria and they are like 100 percent behind them. So when I played my first match against a Nigerian player, it was very difficult because I was not playing only against my opponent but against all the people in the hall. So it was very difficult. But I managed to play well in this match, so I’m happy. In the next match I will probably play against my compatriot and my friend and I know it will be a difficult match.”

Felix Lartey of Ghana after losing 3-0 to Peng Wang-Wei (TPE) in the qualifying round one of men’s singles was happy with the organisation in Lagos.

“The match was quite good and I am happy coming back to Nigeria because we don’t have this kind of tournament in Africa. I am grateful for the chance to play because Nigeria are experienced when it comes to staging a top class event. “

For Peter Hribar, who is also in Lagos for the first time said he has to adapt to the hot Lagos climate. “It’s my first time here in Lagos and it’s a bit hot than what I’m used to. It’s my first time in West Africa and it is hotter than I expected and I am still adapting. Circumstances are different from what I’m used to in Europe but I managed to win my first match and I hope I can win more matches. I must say this is a good feeling winning otherwise I could pack my things and go back home but I’m still alive in the tournament. So I’m looking forward to playing some more or better even and winning some medals.”

With the convergence of top players on Lagos, table tennis fans are ecstatic thronging the Sir Molade Okoya Thomas Indoor Sports Hall, in their scores.  On Thursday, when the Round of 32 served off, the fans multiplied with the hope of watching the biggest names in the game.

Lagos has become a favourite destination for players. Everybody talked about the atmosphere of Lagos, the passion of the fans, of the people, and the ability to put up a good show for the success of the event.

  • Lagos guber: Labour Party suffers setbacks at tribunal

Lagos guber: Labour Party suffers setbacks at tribunal

Petition filed by the defeated governorship candidate of the Labour Party (LP) in Lagos State, Gbadebo Rhodes-Vivour, in his bid to get the judiciary to nullify the election of Governor Babajide Sanwoolu of the All Progressives Congress (APC) and declare him the winner of the March 18 gubernatorial election in the state, has suffered setbacks, Assistant Editor, ‘Dare Odufowokan, reports.

There is anxiety within the Lagos State chapter of the Labour Party (LP) following a series of setbacks suffered by the petition filed by the party and its governorship candidate during the last gubernatorial election in the state, Gbadebo Rhodes-Vivour, at the state’s Governorship Election Petition Tribunal. Checks by The Nation revealed that party leaders and members alike are worried by some developments at the tribunal.

Concerns within the party mounted last Thursday when the Lagos State Governorship Election Petition Tribunal disqualified a witness, Erastus Ofoma, who has been subpoenaed by Gbadebo Rhodes-Vivour, from testifying against Governor Sanwo-Olu and his deputy, Dr. Obafemi Hamzat. Ofoma’s appearance and testimonies were anticipated to help the case of the LP by the party’s legal team. The development is believed to have unsettled the party greatly.

Weeks earlier, anxiety was triggered within the party when the Tribunal dismissed an application by its defeated gubernatorial candidate, Rhodes-Vivour. The LP flagbearer was seeking an order for leave to consolidate his petition with that of the opposition Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and its candidate, Olajide Adediran. The court by its ruling refused the consolidation of the petitions.

To further compound the situation for the LP and Rhodes-Vivour, the Lagos State chapter of the PDP and its governorship candidate, Olajide Abdul-Azeez Adediran, also known as Jandor, according to their demands in the petitions they submitted before the Governorship Election Petition Tribunal, are seeking the disqualification of the LP) and its candidates in the guber election for non-compliance with the Electoral Act, 2022.

Recall that Sanwo-Olu defeated 15 other contestants from different parties to emerge the winner of the governorship election held in the state on March 18, 2023. The governor polled 762,134 votes to beat his closest rival, Rhodes-Vivour of the Labour Party, who polled 312,329 votes in the election. The PDP candidate, Jandor, garnered 62,449 votes to come a very distant third during the governorship election.

Dissatisfied, Rhodes-Vivour, after the election, approached the Election Petition Tribunal seeking the sack of Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu as governor. In his petition to the tribunal, he is alleging that the governor was, at the time of election, not qualified to contest the election. The candidate of LP listed some grounds on which his petition is based.

He alleged that the election of Sanwo-Olu was invalid by reason of corrupt practices or non-compliance with the provisions of the Electoral Act 2022 and the Constitution. The third ground was to the effect that Sanwo-Olu was not duly elected by majority of the lawful votes cast at the election. He asked the tribunal to nullify Sanwo-Olu’s return and declare him the winner of the election.

    Fresh blow

Rhodes-Vivour’s legal team, as part of efforts to prove the allegations against Sanwoolu, had invited Ofoma to come testify before the tribunal. But Chairman of the three-man tribunal committee, Justice Arum Igyen-Ashom ordered Ofoma to step down as he could not testify in the matter. The tribunal held that the witness’ statement on oath was uploaded out of time and outside the 21 days stipulated under the Electoral Act.

The tribunal ruled on the matter after taking submissions from counsels representing parties in the petition. Other members of the tribunal were Justice Mikail Adubulahi and Justice l.P. Braimoh. Rhodes-Vivour was represented by Dr. Olumide Ayeni (SAN).

The first respondent, the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) was represented by Eric Obigor, second and third respondents, Sanwo-Olu and Hamzat were represented by Bode Olanipekun (SAN) while the fourth respondent, the APC was represented by Norrison Quakers (SAN).

Ayeni, who represented the petitioner, had earlier informed the tribunal of his intention to call the subpoenaed witness, Ofoma. He said the witness had deposed to his statement on oath and served the respondents. While INEC’s counsel, Obigor confirmed service Olanipekun and Quakers objected the application.

They said the witness was not one of the witnesses in the list that accompanied the petition. Olanipekun said there was no indication on the list that any witness was going to be subpoenaed to appear before the tribunal. He argued that in the case, an objection was taken to evidence being deposed outside 21 days permitted for presentation of petition.

According to him, all the justices of the appellate court are unanimous in their decision that the subpoenaed witness whose statement is not front loaded cannot give evidence. Quakers who also aligned with Olanipekun, further stated that during the pre-action protocol of the tribunal on June 5, the list of witnesses presented did not suggest that a subpoenaed witness was going to be presented.

“It is a mandatory provision to comply with, that election petition shall be accompanied with list of witnesses to be called and their statement on oath. The petitioner cannot ambush respondents and the tribunal. At pre-hearing protocol, all applications have been closed. I urge the tribunal to discountenance the witness purportedly being subpoenaed in the person of Ofoma.” he said, citing the provisions of Electoral Act, first schedule, paragraph four.

The respected legal luminary insisted that the appearance of Ofoma is a violation of the Electoral Act. Following extensive arguments and counter-arguments by the lagal teams of all parties to the case, the tribunal upheld the pleadings of the respondents and ordered Ofoma to step down as he could not testify in the matter.

    Application dismissed

Apart from also dismissing the application of LP’s defeated gubernatorial candidate, Rhodes-Vivour, for the consolidation of his petition with that of the PDP and its candidate, Adediran, the tribunal similarly rejected Rhodes-Vivour’s request to file an additional list of witnesses and their written statements on oath. All these developments are regarded as very worrisome setbacks by concerned chieftains and members of the opposition party.

The three-Justice panel dismissed the application for consolidation after hearing arguments from all the parties on the grounds that the parties, as well as the facts, subject matter of their petitions and reliefs sought are different. While the LP candidate’s petition was brought against the INEC, Governor Sanwo-Olu, and his deputy, Hazmat, Adediran’s petition in conjunction with his party, the PDP, have INEC, Sanwo-Olu, Hazmat, the APC, as well as Rhodes-Vivour and his party, as respondents.

The tribunal also observed, in its ruling, that Adediran’s counsel had earlier made it clear, in the pre-hearing information sheet, Form TF 008 of the Electoral Act 2022, that the petitioner and his party, the PDP, do not want the petition to be considered with that of others. With that, the tribunal turned down Rhodes-Vivour’s request to have his action and that of the PDP candidate consolidated.

In the second application which was dismissed, the tribunal held that the LP’s candidate should have sought the leave of the court for extension of time within which to amend his petition, as the 21 days stipulated by the Act within which to file an election petition has since passed.

As if the above mentioned developments are not enough worries for the LP and its legal team, the tribunal few days later, reviewed its initial order on the number of witnesses to be called by parties in Gbadebo Rhodes-Vivour’s petition. With the review, the APC, its candidate and that of the LP are to now present 30 witnesses each. Only INEC said it would limit the number of its witnesses to 10.

    Another hurdle

The LP and its candidate will also have to cross the hurdle placed on their way at the tribunal by PDP and its candidate, Adeniran, if they are to make anything out of their petition. Adeniran and his party are, among other things, calling for the disqualification of the LP candidate in the election for non-compliance with the Electoral Act, 2022.

In the petition marked EPT/LAG/GOV/01/2023 and dated April 7, the petitioners challenged the outcome of the March 18 gubernatorial election on the grounds of substantial non-compliance with the Electoral Act and the guidelines of INEC.

While INEC is the 1st respondent, Governor Sanwo-Olu and the APC deputy governorship candidate, Hamzat; the APC, the LP governorship gandidate, Gbadebo Rhodes-Vivour and the LP, respectively, are the 2nd, 3rd, 4th, 5th, and 6th respondents.Besides non-compliance with relevant provisions of the Electoral Act 2022, Jandor and PDP, in their petition, are claiming that at the time of the Gubernatorial election held on March 18, 2023, Sanwo-Olu, Hamzat, and Rhodes-Vivour weren’t qualified to contest the poll.

The petitioners, therefore, prayed that all votes cast for them in the election be declared wasted. “The disqualification of the governorship candidate of LP was also hinged on non-compliance of the LP with the requirement of the Electoral Law in the conduct of the primary election that produced the candidate,’ the defeated PDP governorship candidate told the tribunal.

He argued further that the notice of the primary election was issued by the state chapter of the party as against the provision that it must be issued and signed by the National Chairman and Secretary of the party. To many observers, the LP and its candidate may not find it easy brushing aside the many hurdles placed on its way in its quest to govern Lagos State.

On May 29th, a new government headed by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu was inaugurated in Abuja, what are your expectations for this government?

From the speech of Mr. President we know that he has prepared long time ago and he is ready for this job. To me, Tinubu has all it takes to do the work based on his antecedents as former governor of Lagos State. Our expectations are high and enormous if you consider so many challenges confronting the country in the area of security, Agriculture, economy and social areas.

For example, let us look at the economy; now that banditry and Boko Haram have subsided, I will like the President to be more concerned about putting more money into the security sector; provide manpower, equipment and advanced technology that could help to identify criminal hideouts for the armed forces and the fighting troops so that we can end terrorism once and for all.

Tinubu is a civilian and not an ex military personnel. Do you believe he can handle such a security matter successfully?

It’s not about being a civilian or military man. It’s more about the idea. There is a quote by a Paris writer, Victor Higo. He said when you have an idea in your head you already have the whole idea. Tinubu, I strongly believe, already has the idea in his head and considering his antecedent in Lagos on how he handled the menace of area boys and brought sanity to the state.

I am optimistic that he can do the same in the security sector. You cannot compare Tinubu with any military administrator because he has been preparing for this post for more than two decades. He believes in team work and anybody who believes in team work is a goal getter. With what we have seen him do in Lagos State, it is obvious that he has the right ideas. All that is left is the right atmosphere and team to put his ideas into practice.

What do you think of the combination of Tinubu and Kashim Shettima, the Vice President, who comes from your region?

You know, the two have the capacity to fight insecurity. Kashim Shettima in his days as Borno State governor for two terms did wonderfully well and cleared almost seventy percent of Boko Haram before handing over to his successor. He became the governor at a time when Boko Haram started but he was able to handle the situation and curb the menace drastically.

So the choice of Kashim Shettima is also a square peg in a square hole. As someone who is very close to Kashim Shettima, I know his character. He is a bold and courageous person who has foresight and is always thinking outside the box. Based on this my personal relationship with him I know his joint ticket with Tinubu will surprise Nigerians positively in terms of progress and infrastructural development.

These two will move Nigeria forward and increase internally generated revenue. I know that Shettima can help Tinubu in putting an end to insecurity in the country. He is also prepared for the tasks ahead of him. He has impressive track records too as a former governor. He is the right man to help Tinubu implement his ideas and plans for Nigeria.

Do you see them doing well with the economy of the country too?

If you look at the history of Tinubu as former governor of Lagos, he was able to sustain governance without federal government allocation. So I think Tinubu is the right President for Nigeria at this point in time. We should just rally round and pray for him. He has proven to us in the past that he is a man who knows what to do to bring about the change we need in this country. He will put together a team that will help him interprete his plans and implement them one by one.

What is your take on subsidy removal by Mr. President in his inaugural speech?

Buhari has already removed the subsidy and Bola Ahmed Tinubu is just here to implement it. For me, it is a good time for him to start with this issue of subsidy removal so that everybody will prepare their minds for it. However, I am sure that everything that has a beginning also has an end. In Fact it is good for us to start this way. When he announced in his inaugural speech that subsidy is gone, it is just to show you that he is a leader. As a leader once you make a pronouncement, there is no looking back. There is nothing like subsidy again, let us use the money for other developmental projects.

What of the need for consultation before taking such a critical decision?

No need for consultation because I know they wanted to say it during the campaign but because it will have so many side effects that time, they decided to shelve it. So subsidy removal as announced by Mr. President is not a surprise. We should just thank God that it has eventually been removed. We should prepare our minds to work hard and make money so that whatever effect it’s going to have on us we can cope with it.

What is your view about the combination of the South West and the North East presidency?

If you can recollect, this same combination was tried in the 1993 election with Abiola and Kingibe and they successfully won the election but unfortunately, the process was truncated by military intervention. But for the military interruptions, we would have had this similar combination in 1993 when Abiola and Kingibe came on same faith ticket from both South West and North East.

Are you saying this is probably a return to Abiola/Kingibe hope ’93?

Yeah we can say so but we have to thank Nigerians for accepting the ticket because it’s not about the religion, it’s about the result. Now if you look at everywhere in the country, almost everyone has succumbed to the ticket. Almost 70 percent of Nigerians are happy with Bola Ahmed Tinubu because they know he has the capacity.

If you look at some previous vice president and deputy governors relationship with their principal what will be your advice to Shettima?

I want Kashim Shettima to emulate Yemi Osinbajo who had been loyal to his principal from beginning to the end of their administration. He should not allow a third party to enter into the relationship with his boss. I am saying this because of rumours that some evil people are wishing that if Tinubu dies, Kashim Shettima can take over.

No, Allah gives power, Allah is the one that can take souls and He is the owner of life. If I die, it’s from Allah. So I am advising the Vice President to be hundred percent loyal to his boss. The Tinubu that I have known for the past two decades now is a person who believes in teamwork. He believes in representation. Tinubu believes that if you have the capacity to do something then you can represent him and he will supervise.

He is not somebody that will give you work and then forget about you because he has the idea. These two gentlemen performed very well in their days as Governors of their various states. Kashim Shettima I know is a loyal party man but he should not allow people to get between them.

It is Allah that makes him the Vice President, there are hundreds of brains in the North, he is not the most brilliant but Allah chooses whosoever he wants. So I strongly advise him not to allow a third party to come between him and his principal. It is not everybody that will rise to become the President of a country, he should thank God that he is chosen to be number two citizen out of 250 million people.

To those who are close to Tinubu, they know he is someone who has a forgiving heart. Tinubu is different from many of our politicians in Nigeria. You can offend him and he will forgive you, I am telling you this from my own small political experience with him. It is only Tinubu that I know that has a forgiving heart.

Tinubu hails new NGE President Anaba, other excos

PRESIDENT  Bola Ahmed Tinubu has congratulated the newly elected President of the Nigerian Guild of Editors, Eze Anaba, Editor of the Vanguard newspaper, wishing  him and other newly elected officials of the guild a most fulfilling and productive tenure in office.

Anaba defeated Bolaji Adebiyi of This Day newspaper  to emerge winner of the NGE election held in Owerri, the Imo State capital yesterday.

Tinubu in a statement by the Special Adviser on Special Duties, Communications and Strategy Dele Alake said the last Biennial Convention of the Nigerian Guild of Editors (NGE) was an epochal milestone in the evolution of the journalism profession in Nigeria.

“An event that witnessed the election of new officers of the Guild to guide the affairs of the organization for the next two years, it is most gratifying that the outcome was successful and  rancor-free despite the intensity of the contest for the various positions competed for. On behalf of the President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, President Bola Ahmed Tinubu (GCFR), I congratulate the newly elected President of the Guild, Mr Eze Anaba, Editor of the Vanguard newspaper and wish him and other newly elected officials of the guild a most fulfilling and productive tenure in office.

“By its peaceful and rancor-free conduct of elections to elect its new officers, the NGE has sent a resounding message to the larger Nigerian polity that elections for desired offices can be intensely competed for without degenerating into bitterness, acrimony and needless malice. In this regard, Mr President commends those who lost out in the elections at various levels such as Mr Bolaji Adebiyi of This Day newspaper for accepting the outcome and pledging support for the winners. This is a light that the NGE is showing that the rest of us may find the way to a mature, tolerant, stable and sustainable democratic culture.”

He added: “It is of the utmost importance that the various unions in the newspaper industry such as the NGE, Nigerian Union of Journalists (NUJ) and the Newspapers Proprietors Association of Nigeria (NPAN) imbibe the ethos of internal democracy in support of professional integrity for the benefit of good governance, stability and sustainability development in Nigeria. The NGE has, in this regard, made a strong statement for the Nigerian media as a worthy exemplar.

“But then, elections are not held within the unions in our profession just for the sake of holding elections to appoint new officers of associational offices. Rather, the larger picture is to ensure at all times that we place the profession in prime position to continually fulfill its constitutional obligation of serving as a watchdog of the people in checking the excesses of government and promoting the greatest good of the greatest number of our people.”

The statement noted that the history of the Nigerian media has, since it’s epochal role in the struggle against colonial imperialism, been intimately intertwined with the fate of the Nigerian state and her peoples. “The press was active in the struggle against military dictatorship in post-colonial Nigeria and this opposition to autocracy was particularly exemplified in the fierce opposition of patriotic media practitioners to the annulment of the June 12, 1993 presidential election won by the late Chief MKO Abiola. It is impossible to write  the history of the democratic benefits we have enjoyed since the commencement of this dispensation in 1999 without emblazoning the heroic contributions of patriotic sections of the media in gold.

“But President Tinubu insists that the challenges ahead of the media in playing its role towards strengthening our democracy, keeping power continually in check as well as promoting good, responsible and accountable governance are greater than the paths traversed before. He pledges the support of his administration in collaboration with the media towards achieving these lofty objectives in the best interest of our country.Once again, the President congratulates the newly elected officials of the NGE and wishes them a most successful and productive tenure in office.”

Ohanaeze, Arewa Youth groups tackle Agbakoba
over call for INEC chairman’s sack

The youth wing of apex Igbo socio-cultural organisation, Ohanaeze Ndigbo and the Northern Emancipation Network (NEN) have faulted call for the removal of the chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), Professor Mahmood Yakubu by a former Chairman of the Nigerian Bar Association (NBA,) Olisa Agbakoba, SAN.

Recall that Agbakoba had advised President Bola Ahmed Tinubu to fire the INEC boss.

The erudite lawyer had praised key decisions already taken by the Tinubu administration, including the sack of CBN governor, Godwin Emefiele, as well as EFCC chairman, Bawa Abdulrasheed and the uniform exchange rates but went a step further to urge the President to also sack Yakubu.

In a statement made available to journalists on Saturday by the National President of the Igbo group, Mazi Okwu Nnabuike, the Ohanaeze youths urged Tinubu  not to throw away the baby with the bath water.

Okwu said though he agreed with Agbakoba on other decisions taken by the Tinubu government, he averred that there was no need for Yakubu’s sack at this material time.

NEN in its statement which was issued by the network’s Chairman, Sulaiman Abbah, said it was unfortunate that Agbakoba, a SAN,  from whom ordinary sanity and decency were expected, would be so blinded by prejudice as not to acknowledge the almost universal recognition of the February 2023 election as most credible, free and fair.

Ohanaeze youth leader was of the view that “despite the shortcomings we witnessed during the 2023 general elections, it was one of the best elections ever conducted in the country’s history.

“In the same election conducted by Yakubu, we had sitting governors lose elections across the country; we had popular National Assembly members lose election. This did not happen before in the country’s election.

“We are not making excuses for the lapses during the elections, but it is wrong to totally disparage the efforts of the commission.

“There is no perfect election in any part of the world, even in the United States which prides itself as the capital of world democracy.”

Okwu further advised that any attempt to remove Yakubu at this time was ill-timed, stressing that “aggrieved candidates are before the election tribunals ventilating their anger; how then can we remove the INEC chairman on whose table the bulk stops?

“Yakubu should be allowed to remain as the INEC helmsman at least pending the conclusion of the cases.”

He further advised that efforts should be made to improve on the gains made during the 2023 general elections.

NEN on it part descended hard on Agbakoba for demanding the removal of  the INEC chairman, describing it as a frustration of a bad loser.

Attributing Agbakoba’s demand to symptoms of irritation of the electoral defeat suffered by the  Labour Party, the Northern Network advised him to seek lessons in political tolerance, and sportsmanship.

“How can anybody in his right senses, fail to see credibility and fairness in an election in which Bola Tinubu for instance, lost his major enclave of Lagos, or where Buhari, a sitting president at that time, lost his two main catchment states of Katsina and Kaduna, ” Abbah queried in the statement.
