The United Nations (UN) Secretary General, Antonio Guterres, yesterday commiserated with the government and people of Nigeria over the Kwara boat accident that killed 106 people.

The boat which capsized at Kpada community in Patigi, at the wee hours of Monday, June 12, was said to have conveyed at least 250 passengers from Egboti  village, Niger State, where they attended a wedding.

Governors of Edo and Ogun states, Godwin Obaseki and Prince Dapo Abiodun respectively, as well as The Nigerian Transportation Commissioners Forum (NTCF), also extended their condolences to the government and people of Kwara over Monday’s tragic accident which occurred at Patigi Local Government Area of the state.

Spokesperson for the Secretary General, Stéphane Dujarric, at a news conference at UN headquarters in New York, said Guterres noted that the accident was another example of the need for comprehensive action to save lives at sea and reduce perilous journeys.

“I can tell you that we, along with our UN team in Nigeria, have expressed our sincere condolences to the families of those who died in the tragic capsized boat accident on the Niger River, many of them women and children.

“Our hearts go out to all people and the Government of Nigeria in this difficult time,’’ he said.

Similarly, Dujarric said Guterres recalled the horrific numbers of deaths that took place in the Mediterranean [in 2022] as counted by the International Organisation for Migration (IOM).

“Today, we have yet another tragic illustration. I can tell you that the secretary-general was horrified by the reports of a shipwreck that took place off the coast of Greece, claiming the lives of scores of women, men and children.

“He stressed, as he said before, that every person searching for a better life needs dignity and safety.

“This is yet another example of the need for Member States to come together and create orderly safe pathways for people forced to flee, and for comprehensive action to save lives at sea and reduce perilous journeys,’’ he said.

“In the light of this unfortunate incident, it is pertinent to reiterate the call for safety on the waterways so as to avoid tragedies such as this one,” he said.

Abiodun said: “Words are inadequate to express my shock and sadness over this unfortunate incident, which occurred on Tuesday and led to the death of dozens of people who had attended a wedding ceremony.

“It is indeed sad that a wedding ceremony could turn tragic few hours later. My thoughts are with the families and friends of the deceased. I pray that God grant the families of the victims, the fortitude to bear the irreparable loss.”

Similarly, NTCF’s Executive Secretary, Mrs Chinwe Uwaegbute, while sympathizing with families of victims, assured that the forum was committed to stop reoccurrence of such incident.

Already, he said the Inspector General of Police had approved the use of police helicopters to access the location due to difficulty in accessing the scene.

Olateru said: “The access point is a challenge to us and accessing the scene by road would take not less than 12 hours. We approached the Inspector General of Police (IGP) to get helicopter which would aid our investigators to access the location easily and the IG approved the use of the helicopter.

“Currently, our investigators are on their way to the location but from the information we gathered, not less than 250 passengers were conveyed on a local boat and 106 fatalities were recorded while 144 passengers have rescued.

“Our investigation is not aimed at apportioning blame but we will work with relevant agencies including National Inland Waterways Authority (NIWA) to know the cause of the accident.”

“I want to plead with the Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN), the Muslim Society of Nigeria (MSM) and other religions bodies in the country to join hands with NAPTIP to wage war against these criminals,” she said.

According to her, the criminals were propelled by the huge financial gains in human trafficking and so, were constantly evolving tactics to prey on unsuspecting persons.

Waziri-Azi appealed to Nigerians to join hands with NAPTIP to expose individuals and syndicates involved in organ harvesting and other heinous crimes related to human trafficking.

To intending overseas travellers, the NAPTIP boss said “they should get all necessary information on the destination country and procure right travelling documents.

“Travelers and their families should also avoid the desperation to make wealth which makes them contract travelling consultants, as some of them may belong to organ harvesting syndicates,” she warned.

According to Isaac, they were on their way to the farm when the kidnappers waylaid them and took them into the forest.

“My father could not run. They took us across a river but my father could not pass through. They tied our hands but they took me along. It was when I was released after we paid N400,000 ransom that I knew my father was killed. The kidnappers were Fulani but one of them spoke Yoruba.”

He said: “This problem is not limited to Ijagba. There is general insecurity in that area. We are appealing that we need strong military base so that it will reduce incessant kidnapping and killing. Many people cannot go to their farms.

“The area has become a den of terrorists. They use the forest reserve as their base. They always kill those who could not pay ransom. Over 20 persons have been killed in the past two years.

“We have reported severally. Whenever there is an incident, we will report to relevant agencies. Amotekun is there but their firearm cannot equate the superior weapon of the herdsmen.

“We have vigilante and they are trying. But we don’t have guns or bullet for them. It was the vigilante group that discovered the corpse of Odeh.”

Michael Adeniran, father of Whitney Omodesola Adeniran, the 12-year-old late student of Chrisland Schools, Ogba, has told an Ikeja High Court that he was unaware of the use of the drugs that were administered on his daughter by their family doctor on January 20, prior to her death.

Whitney died on February 9, during the inter-house sports competition of the school held at Agege Stadium.

Adeniran while being cross-examined by the fourth defence counsel, Ademola Animashaun, before Justice Oyindamola Ogala, responded in the negative when asked whether he was aware that the combination of nitrazepam and amitriptyline, which were administered the deceased on January 20 when she took ill, was a semi disaster.

“Your daughter complained of anxiety on January 20 and your family doctor prescribed these two drugs for her. Do you know that the combination of the two drugs is a semi disaster?” Animashaun asked

“Although I do not know what the  drugs were meant for, I disagree with you that the drugs prescribed by the family doctor are semi disaster,” replied Adeniran.

The father told the court that when he picked up his daughter from school on January 20, she complained of anxiety and he took her to the family doctor.

‘Lagos working to ensure growth of MSMEs’

Lagos State has urged stakeholders to deploy their experience to ensure Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises (MSMEs) become more productive and competitive in their operations.

Permanent Secretary in the Ministry of Commerce, Industry and Cooperatives, Mrs. Adetutu Ososanya, spoke yesterday at the quarterly meeting of the Lagos State Council on MSMEs.

According to Mrs. Ososanya, members must work to achieve the council’s objective and demonstrate commitment for collective responsibility, alignment and harmonisation of efforts for sustainable growth and development of MSMEs that can stand, thrive and survive in any hostile business environment.

She said: “Stakeholders must work to grow and develop the capacity of MSME operators for effective and efficient production of goods and services, which will enable them compete favourably in various markets of the world using the instruments of AfCFTA, AGOA and others.

“Through our gathering and discussion, we will be helping to chart the way forward for our MSMEs, who are currently confronted with numerous challenges that affect production and make the economic environment hostile for their businesses. We will bring them succour and give them a reason to hold on.”

She stressed the importance of encouraging formalisation of MSMEs, which is very essential in accessing numerous benefits, including the ones provided by the government, such as capacity-building, improvement in business management practices; access to finance, information and markets, among others.

Director-General of the Small and Medium Enterprise Development Agency of Nigeria (SMEDAN) Dr Olawale Fasanya noted that Lagos is important to the national economy because it accounts for about 3.5 million Nano and Micro Enterprises.

“I commend Lagos for the great work it is doing for MSMEs, and I urge it to do more. I also advise that critical enablers in the MSMEs ecosystem, such as development partners, financial institutions, etc, should be co-opted to support the state,” he said.

Lagos State Manager of SMEDAN, Bunmi Kole-Dawodu, hinted that the agency would be opening a microfinance bank later in the year to help cushion the effect of COVID-19 on micro-enterprises/businesses.

“All processes have been done and hopefully by October the bank will start operations in states with high concentration of MSMEs – Lagos, Kano, Kaduna, and others – so that our businesses can get funding.

“It is pertinent to note that the SMEDAN microfinance bank will not be for profit because it will be using part of its funding to help small businesses survive the harsh effects of COVID-19. So the revolving loan is without interest,” he added.

Chairman of the Association of Small Business Owners (ASBON) Dr Femi Egbesola described the Lagos MSME Council as the most organised in the Federation. He also harped on the need to cascade capacity building for Nano and Micro businesses to their levels, open more access to finance, drive more patronage for locally-made products and services, using the Procurement Act, provide international exposure and close the infrastructural gap that negatively impact production.

Egbesola also called for more support for Business Membership Organisations, BMOs to make them more active.

The meeting was attended by representatives of government agencies, BMOs and other stakeholders

Lagos begins support, healing sessions for SGBV perpetrators

The Lagos State Domestic and Sexual Violence Agency (DSVA) has begun its Support and Healing Group Sessions for perpetrators of Domestic Violence.

Executive Secretary of the DSVA Mrs. Titilola Vivour-Adeniyi, in a statement yesterday, said the worrisome increase in domestic violence informed the necessity to address the trend.

She hinted that the programme would tackle the root causes of domestic violence. “Support and  the healing group sessions would help identify and address the underlying factors contributing to the perpetrator’s violent behaviour,’ she noted.

According to Mrs. Vivour-Adeniyi, research shows that domestic violence stems from deep-seated issues such as unresolved trauma, anger management problems, substance abuse, or learned patterns of violence. She stressed that without psychological intervention, ‘there is a risk of perpetuating the cycle of violence in their own relationships or pass it on to future generations’.

She argued that through this strategic intervention, perpetrators can gain insights into these factors and develop healthier coping mechanisms and also break the cycle of violence that the support and healing group sessions can avail.
