Wanda Diamond League: Amusan races to record win in Poland

Nigeria’s Queen of track and world record holder, Tobiloba Amusan emerged victorious yesterday at the Wanda Diamond League in Poland with a record-setting performance.

Amusan breasted the tape ahead of the United States of America duo of Kendra Harrison and Ali Nia to win the women’s 100m Hurdles at the Silesa Stadiu, Chorzó, in Poland.

Setting a new Meeting Record and her season’s best, the current world champion raced to 12.34 seconds to beat her opponents – by a whisker – Harrison Kendra who also finished with 12.34 seconds but was second and Ali Nia who placed third with 12.38 seconds.

The Commonwealth Games champion will defend her title at the World Athletics Championship later this year in Budapest.

Hoeness sure of Bayern’s signing of Kane

Bayern Munich honorary president Uli Hoeness is confident they will sign England captain Harry Kane this summer.

The German champions have reportedly bid £70m for the Tottenham striker.

Chairman Daniel Levy met Bayern Munich officials on Thursday over a possible sale, and Hoeness says there have been talks with the striker’s advisers.

“Kane has clearly signalled in all conversations that his decision stands – and if it stays, then we’ll get him,” Hoeness told Sport1. “He wants to play in Europe and luckily for us Tottenham will not be next year. He now has another opportunity to come to a top club in Europe.”

Hoeness indicated that discussions with Kane’s brother Charlie, who is his agent, and his father Patrick had been positive.

“His advisers are also very pleasant in this case,” he said. “Up to now, the father and the brother have always stood by what they promised. If it stays that way, that’s OK.”

Kane, whose Spurs contract expires next June, scored 30 Premier League goals last season.

Last week, new Spurs manager Ange Postecoglou said he would present his “vision” for the club to Kane amid the Bayern interest.

On Friday, the 29-year-old was named in the squad for the club’s pre-season tour of Australia, Thailand and Singapore.

    • •Omisore: expect governor soon

Members of the National Working Committee (NWC) of the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) yesterday visited Akure, Ondo State capital, to douse tension over Governor Rotimi Akeredolu’s ill-health.

They were led by the National Secretary, Senator Iyiola Omisore, who visited Deputy Governor Lucky Ayedatiwa and Afenifere leader Chief Ruben Fasoranti.

Omisore called for amity and peace among party leaders, political office holders and government officials.

He said Akeredolu would soon return to the state to continue attending to the development needs of the people.

Ruling out any alarm, the national secretary called for prayers for the governor.

Omisore, who said he was on solidarity visit to the state, also visited the party Chairman, Ade Adetimehin, members of the State Working Committee, Secretary to the State Government, Princess Oladunni Odu, Chief of Staff, Chief Gbenga Ale, Members of the House of Assembly, commissioners, and other top government officials.

He said the national secretariat regretted the twist in the recent wish and prayer of the National Chairman, Senator Abdullahi Adamu, for the governor.

He insisted that at no time did the national chairman say the governor is incapacitated, lamenting that some people only opted to be mischievous and reported “what they feel makes news”.

The visit, he explained, was meant to clarify Adamu’s sincere and noble statement, and put the record straight.

Omisore said: “Mr. Chairman only urged people to pray for the quick recovery of your governor; not on account of being incapacitated.

“Our visit, therefore, is to reinforce the position of the national secretariat that we only prayed for the quick recovery of Arakunrin Akeredolu SAN, and not otherwise”, Omisore stressed.

He said the national secretariat was on the same page with the state, and would always offer support, when necessary.

Adetimehin dismissed the insinuation that the state chapter was in crisis.

He said the party was as united as ever under the leadership of Akeredolu.

Adetimehin said the state was still savouring its enviable contributions to the party’s victory at the last presidential election, adding that there was no chance for bickering.

Acting Governor Ayedatiwa thanked the visiting party leaders for their solidarity.

The National Secretary was accompanied by the Deputy National Secretary, Mr. Festus Fuanter, National Vice Chairman (North Central), Hon. Bawa Muazu and National Vice Chairman (South West), Hon. Isaacs Kekemeke as well as the immediate past Minister of State for Transportation, Prince Ademola Adegoroye.

  • Tinubu: Africa must be active to compete globally

Tinubu: Africa must be active to compete globally

    • •Leaders pledge commitment to integration, cooperation

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu yesterday explained how Africa can maintain its relevance in a competitive global arena.

He said African countries should be active to compete globally, affirm and defend their continental unity, and reject what he described as “a new scramble for the continent”.

President Tinubu, who is the chairperson of the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) Authority of Heads of States and Government, said Africa should be proactive, insisting that the odds against the continent do not require passive leadership.

He rejected the notion of a new scramble for Africa at a time the historic plundering and exploitation of the past should be consigned to the heap of history.

Tinubu spoke in Nairobi, Kenya, during the Fifth Mid-Year Coordination Meeting of the African Union (AU), the Regional Economic Communities (RECs), the Regional Mechanisms (RMs), and African Union Member States.

According to a statement by his Adviser on Special Duties, Communication and Strategy, Mr. Dele Alake, the President also spoke on the twin challenges of terrorism and the reversal of democratic changes of government.

To address the twin challenges, Tinubu said ECOWAS Authority was set to strengthen its Standby Force for deployment to fight terror and resist coups.

President Tinubu highlighted the progress made by ECOWAS in its integration process, including trade, free movement of persons, investment promotion, infrastructure development, and security.

In his speech, entitled: “Address on Status of Regional Integration in ECOWAS,” he emphasised the need for Africa to overcome its challenges and work towards a prosperous future, focusing on inclusive growth, good governance, and leveraging the opportunities provided by the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA).

Urging African leaders to foster good governance to ensure a prosperous future for the continent, President Tinubu said: “As Africans, we forge ahead, no matter the barriers thrust before us.

“The world we inhabit is often unkind and uncertain. History and current global difficulties argue against our future success.

“Lessons of the past few years teach us that the world economy can be disrupted in ways that halt progress and invite downturn.

“Our nations can suddenly find themselves in dire situations if we choose to be passive observers of our fate.”

Rejecting the notion of passivity, he said Africa will not permit the repeat of scramble, exploitation and plundering of the continent.

On peace, security, and stability, the President said the sub-region should be liberated from terrorism and anti-constitutional changes in government.

He added: “We sit here in meaningful discussion of vital economic matters. Yet, it will be impossible to bring full meaning to what we attempt unless we give due consideration to the instability and conflict that now scar many of our nations.

“The fullness of the integration we seek will elude us as long as several of our nations stand in the mist on violence and war.

“The trade and commerce we talk of today refers to valued goods and services that improve life.

“The trade and commerce these nations suffer is of destruction and disorder that takes lives and steals opportunity.

“We cannot integrate Africa and attain the prosperity we seek while our nearby brothers and sisters suffer in pain and anguish; they should not suffer. We must advance as one continent toward peace and prosperity.

“Otherwise, we risk the creation of two or more Africa, one a select group of nations moving steadily while the rest remain trapped in the age-old mire of poverty, conflict and lack of hope.

“It is very clear that in the area of peace, security, and stability, our region is confronted with the twin challenges of terrorism and reversal of democratic gains through undemocratic changes of government.

“To address these challenges, the ECOWAS Authority, which I have the honour to chair, has given directive regarding the enhancement of the role of the ECOWAS Standby Force for deployment to fight terrorism and undemocratic changes in government.”

President Tinubu added: “The Authority has also resolved to raise our funding internally to finance the peace support operations in our community. Meanwhile, we have continued to monitor the transition programmes in Mali, Burkina Faso, and Guinea.”

President Tinubu recounted that during the recently concluded ECOWAS Summit in Bissau, West African leaders resolved to maintain engagement with Mali and Burkina Faso to assiduously work towards the implementation of the 24-month transition calendars agreed with ECOWAS.

To assist Burkina Faso and Mali in defending their territories from terrorists, he said ECOWAS had decided to provide support for their security agencies.

He appealed to international partners to provide the necessary support that will ensure the restoration of democratic order in these West African countries.

On trade, President Tinubu said ECOWAS had achieved the Free Trade Area and was working on establishing the Customs Union and Common Market.

However, he expressed concern about the low level of intra-community trade among member-states, noting that the European Union (EU) remains the major trading partner for the region, followed by Asia, North America, and the rest of Africa.

Highlighting efforts made by ECOWAS to consolidate the gains of its trade liberalisation scheme and support the implementation of the AfCFTA, he said the ECOWAS Commission had been assisting member-states in the negotiations, ratification, and implementation of the AfCFTA.

He noted that 13 of the 15 ECOWAS member-states have ratified the agreement.

On the free movement of persons, President Tinubu said ECOWAS had commenced action towards the implementation of the Harmonized Visa-Regime (ECOVISA) to facilitate the free movement of non-ECOWAS citizens.

On regional infrastructure development, President Tinubu reaffirmed ECOWAS’ focus on building regional infrastructure, including the Lagos-Abidjan Corridor Highway, to promote economic activities and integration.

He added: “The Feasibility and Preliminary Design and Studies show a significant investment cost of nearly US$15 billion for the whole highway with an average economic rate of return of 15 per cent per annum.

“In the same vein, preparations are underway for the development of the other corridors, namely the Abidjan-Praia-Dakar.”

On intra-regional cooperation, the President said a joint border post between Nigeria and Cameroon was recently commissioned and handed over in November 2022 to the authorities of the two countries.

He described the project as a bridge between ECOWAS and ECCAS (Economic Community of Central African States) and a solid foundation for future cooperation and integration between the regions and ultimately the African continent.

President Tinubu also provided an update on the energy sector, expressing delight that several generation and interconnection projects had been implemented within the region.

According to him, with the completion of the electric interconnection between Cote d’Ivoire-Liberia-Sierra Leone- Guinee (1,300 km) and between Senegal-The Gambia-Guinee Bissau and Guinee (1,700 km), all the 15 countries in West Africa have now been interconnected.

He said: “The completion of the Information and Coordination Centre of the West African Power Pool (WAPP) will enable member-states to buy and sell electricity in the region as this centre will act as a regional system operator within the framework of the regional electricity market.”

The ECOWAS chairperson also provided updates on investment promotion and the ECOWAS Cybersecurity Agenda to combat cybercrime and improve cybersecurity capabilities in member states.

Fed Govt seeks N360b in new bond auction

The Federal Government will today seek to raise about N360 billion in new borrowings as part of its regular debt issuance to finance budget deficit and augment national revenue.

At the auction, the first of series of debt issuances scheduled for this quarter, the government would offer four bonds across medium to long tenors to the investing public.

The Debt Management Office (DMO), which oversees government’s debt issuance and management, has indicated it would be offering four bonds to raise N90 billion on each tenor, totalling N360 billion.

Given recent subscription and allotment pattern, market analysts expected the offers to be oversubscribed, with government likely to allot more than initial targets.

The bonds on offer, which are reopening of previous issuances, include the 10-year, 14.55 per cent April 2029 bond; the 10-year, 14.70 per cent June 2033 bond; the 15-year, 15.45 per cent June 2038 bond and the 30-year, 15.70 per cent, June 2053 bond.

Director-General, Debt Management Office (DMO), Ms Patience Oniha, had in a chat with The Nation, said there was the need to improve on the country’s debt situation.

According to Oniha, “we do not recommend that the government continues to borrow in our current levels of debt services because public debt could become unsustainable”.

Oniha lamented that the country’s debt stock “has been growing because of our borrowings in the annual budget and new borrowings approved under the medium term external borrowing plan”.

Another reason for the high borrowing, she pointed out, was “when the country went into recession based on the economic growth and recovery plan to bring the economy out of recession”.

She insisted that the government should “only borrow for priority projects that could generate revenue”.

Oniha advocated for “reduction in new borrowings by actively using public private partnerships arrangements to finance capital projects”.

The Director General of the Debt Management Office also argued that “nedium to long term loans are not advisable to fund the government projects it has to be through available revenues then borrowing can be for special purposes”.

Oniha was baffled by the fact that the debt to GDP ratios of other countries like the US and the UK are yet Nigeria’s debt to revenue is high. According to her, “this means that our numbers are not adding up because of low revenue generation”.

Rep: Kanu’s release will restore peace in  Southeast

A House of Representatives member,   Chris Nkwonta, has appealed to President Bola  Tinubu to release   Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) Leader Nnamdi Kanu for peace to reign in the Southeast.

Nkwonta, who was among the 70 members of the House that accompanied   Speaker Tajudeen  Abbas on his first homage to Zaria, Kaduna State, also welcomed the planned payment of N8,000  each to 12 million Nigerians as a welcome development.

He said, “Recall that I had said earlier that we need peace. Without peace, no country can develop. The issue of Nnamdi Kanu is still in court, but it is an issue that every southeasterner is concerned about.”

“If  Kanu is released, I can assure you that the insecurity we have in Southeast will be reduced or if not completely eliminated.

”I am  being frank with you. Most of us, anytime we are going home, we move with about nine policemen. The question is, what about those who can’t afford that?

On the N8,000 palliative to cushion the effects of subsidy removal, Nkwonta, who represents Okwa East and West Constituency, Abia State, said it was a good plan.

“You may think such an amount is nothing but there are some Nigerians that don’t wake up with N1  in their pockets. Let me tell you,  that sum  will be a big relief to them.”

Olubadan suspends Egungun festival over violence

The Olubadan of Ibadanland, Oba Lekan Balogun, yesterday directed that a suspension be placed on the Egungun festival forthwith, following reported cases of violence, arson and looting of shops by some yet-to-be identified hoodlums hiding under the cover of the ongoing festival.

The monarch spoke through his Personal Assistant (Media), Oladele Ogunsola, in a statement.

The monarch summoned the leaders of masquerades known as Alaagbaa in Ibadanland to an emergency meeting today at the ancient Aliiwo Palace, Agodi, Ibadan.

Oba Balogun, who expressed sadness about the reported cases of violence and brigandage accompanying the annual festival, the video of which had gone viral, described the development as unfortunate and an affront to his palace, because he warned against the festival being turned into an avenue to wreak havoc when it was about to begin.

Oba Balogun last Wednesday condemned similar violence during the same festival that was reported at Alafara Olubadan a couple of days earlier and as if the warning was just a blabbing, the same thing was reported last Saturday on a scale that made the previous one a minor incident.

Read Also: Olubadan plotting to deny me stool

He said: “I warned seriously against what is happening when the festival was to begin and the assurances I got then were that nothing untoward would accompany the festival. But, the reports coming to me have been at variance with those assurances I earlier got from the masquerades’ leaders.

“No responsible leader will fold his arms or put on the cap of I care less when majority of the subjects one superintendents over are in agony and living in perpetual fear just because of the activities of a few misguided elements, who find it difficult to be law-abiding. This is why the suspension clause has to be invoked and how long it lasts will be determined by the outcome of the meeting today.”

Oba Balogun said the ugly past when the masquerade festival was usually a period of terror when perceived enemies became targets of attack and violence had been buried a long time ago and any attempt to exhume it would be met with stiff sanctions.

“I use this medium to call on the security agencies to remain up and doing and ensure no culprit is spared. Whoever flouts the suspension order just given under whatever guise must be handled like a criminal. I’m for peace and there’s zero tolerance for whatever it is that will not give my people peace of mind”, the monarch added.

  • OPC to Tinubu: stop electricity tariff hike plan by DisCos

OPC to Tinubu: stop electricity tariff hike plan by DisCos

    • •’It’s anti-people’

The Oodua People’s Congress (OPC) has raised the alarm over a plan to further increase electricity tariff by the Distribution Companies (DisCos).

It described the move as anti-people, oppressive, unjustified and aimed at discrediting the President Bola Ahmed Tinubu administration.

Urging President Tinubu to stop the DisCos’ electricity rate increase, OPC President, Otunba Wasiu Afolabi, in a statement signed by its General-Secretary, Comrade Bunmi Fasehun, noted that the move had similarly been rejected by workers under the umbrella of the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) and industrialists under the Manufacturers Association of Nigeria (MAN).

Afolabi said Nigerians were still grappling with the scrapping of fuel subsidy, and that increasing the cost of electricity would be adding to the citizens’ burden and painting the Tinubu administration as uncaring.

DISCOs had served notice to consumers to expect to pay higher electricity tariffs from July 1, which was deferred, following the failure to secure the required permission of the government.

OPC said the power distributors would increase their earnings if they stopped incessant power outage and changed their poor attitude by rendering quality services.

“Today, citizens are the ones buying their own poles, transformers, cables and prepaid meters. DisCos have turned themselves into rent-takers and blackout distributors,” Afolabi said, adding: “We cannot continue this way.

Read Also: DisCos move for electricity tariff increase

“DisCos should be told to supply prepaid meters free-of-charge, something they have refused to do so far because they enjoy sending crazy bills to customers, who suffer darkness and power failure all the time,” he said.

OPC advised the DisCos to emulate telecommunications companies (TESCOS) that had reduced the cost consumers paid for calls and data.

Reminding the companies that they had inherited the backbone and infrastructure of the old NEPA and PHCN for a small amount, Afolabi said in comparison, TESCOS independently made colossal investments in laying underground, underwater and fibre-optic cables, antenna and electricity generators, “and they are reaping the profits today.”

OPC asked DisCos to justify the hundreds of billions in public funds that past administrations had pumped into the sector, even when the distribution segment of the electricity value chain had been privatised.

According to the organisation, it had become clear that the DisCos wanted to reap where they did not sow, because the generation and transmission companies were largely discharging their responsibilities while distribution remained problematic.

Afolabi said: “President Tinubu should tell distribution companies that if they cannot deliver with the current tariff, they should submit their licences and close shop.

“The government should scrap this territorial monopoly, where only one DisCo has commandeered a service area and allowed no competition. Consumers in any area should be able to choose and transfer to other DisCos as currently obtains in telecommunications and in other countries. This will create competition and push DisCos to render quality service, in order not to lose customers to competing suppliers.”

  • Petrol subsidy removal desirable, says APC chair Adamu

Petrol subsidy removal desirable, says APC chair Adamu

The removal of petrol subsidy is desirable despite the inconveniences, All Progressives Congress (APC) National Chairman Abdullahi Adamu said yesterday.

He praised President Bola Ahmed Tinubu for the courage to implement the policy.

Speaking on TVC Politics on Sunday, Adamu said: “It is a known fact that there was no provision for payment of subsidy.

“So, technically, the subsidy had been removed before this administration began.

“I am glad with the way the President is confronting that decision.

“Yes, for ordinary Nigerians, there is a need for palliatives to cushion the effects of subsidy removal.

“Experts are still putting their heads together to see how best to ameliorate Nigerians’ suffering.”

On the emergence of the National Assembly principal officers, he said the issue of non-consultation had been resolved.

“The party has accepted the principal officers so nominated. We have accepted them,” he said.

He dismissed the rumour of a cold war between him and President Tinubu over his (Adamu’s) support for former Senate President Ahmad Lawan during the presidential primary.

The APC helmsman said: “These are people who trade in negativity, but I don’t have any authority over them. I cannot ask them what to do or not to do.

“These are individuals and Nigerians like me. They have their rights. But we have to be more careful when we deal with some issues.

“These guys feed on negativity, unfortunately. I have no problem with the President. I led this party with God’s guidance. We won this election.

“Both of us have no issues whatsoever. And since his inauguration, nothing negative has happened between me and him.

“The story alleging the cold war between us is mere fabrication. There is nothing like that between us.

“The party is enjoying a good ride at the moment. It is now time for governance.

“Quite a number of those peddling rumours of cold war between us are doing so loosely.

“Probably, some of them are looking for relevance and some favours through appointments.”
