    Nigeria wins ICC regional award

Nigeria has been awarded the winner of the 100% Cricket Female Cricket Initiative of the Year by the International Cricket Council (ICC).

In a statement issued yesterday by ICC, the world body announced the global winners of the ICC Development Awards 2023, in which African nations secured the top prizes in six award categories.

The Nigeria Cricket Federation (NCF) was listed among the four African countries that shared the six global prizes with Namibia winning in three categories while Nigeria, Rwanda and Uganda clinched the other top awards. Winners were selected by a specialist panel of cricket figures from around the world.

From a comprehensive list of regional award winners which showcased a range of inspirational stories spanning 23 Member nations around the globe, Namibia triumphed as global winners in three categories, including the ICC Development Initiative of the Year, the Men’s Associate Performance of the Year, and the Cricket 4 Good Social Impact Initiative of the Year.

Overcoming significant obstacles in the region such as religion, ethnicity, tribe and tradition, cricket programmes were introduced to provide social benefits to women living in Zamfara.

Despite initial resistance, these introductory sessions proved hugely successful, resulting in Nigeria Cricket Federation recording over 15,000 female participants in 2022.

resident of Nigeria Cricket Federation, Uyi Akpata said: “We were quite optimistic that we could meet our objective of introducing over 100,000 females to the game annually. But we did not expect that the major contributor would be Zamfara, a State in north-west Nigeria, generally perceived to have cultural bias that limits the open interaction of females.”

He added: “A combination of factors came into play – an effective partnership with the State’s education authorities and having dedicated and extremely passionate resources on ground.

“This success story has given us impetus to double our expectations under the 9ja kids programme, as we replicate the ‘winning’ formula to other States in Northern Nigeria,” he added.

It further mandates that where an operator seeks to place an insurable risk offshore, a written approval of National Insurance Commission (NAICOM) must first be sought and obtained and that NAICOM before the issuance of the approval must ascertain that local capacity has been fully exhausted. Bordeaux preparing new contract for Maja

French Ligue 2 club Bordeaux are preparing a new contract for Super Eagles striker Josh Maja who scored 17 goals for the club last season, Soccernet.ng reports.

Maja joined Bordeaux from Sunderland in 2019, but he went on two unproductive loan deals at Stoke City and Fulham.

He returned to Bordeaux last summer, following their relegation to Ligue 2. Maja was coming on the back of two unproductive seasons that saw him score just 16 goals in 76 games.

However, he got into his stride last season, scoring 17 goals in 40 appearances for Bordeaux. Maja almost guided them to Ligue 1 promotion but for some final-day shenanigans by a fan that saw their hopes go up in smoke.

The 24-year-old goal poacher is set to be out of contract by the end of June, but Bordeaux want to keep him.

According to GFFN, Maja had a clause in his contract that would have extended his deal by one year if the club gained promotion to Ligue 1. Since that did not work out, Bordeaux are looking to offer the Super Eagles striker a one-year contract, with the option of a year extension.

After scoring 16 Ligue 2 goals, Maja would have caught the attention of some Ligue 2 teams. Bordeaux may have a tough time keeping their man.
