Navy dismantles illegal structures connected to NNPCL’s wellhead in Rivers

    • •AK-47 rifles, ammunition recovered from sea robbers

The Nigerian Navy has dismantled illegal structures mounted by suspected crude oil thieves on the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation Limited’s, NNPCL

Oil Mining Lease (OML)-18, in Krakrama community, Degema Local Government Area of Rivers State.

The Nation learnt that the invaded OMl-18 Wellhead 17 was newly installed by NNPCL to supply crude oil to its nearest flow station at Cawthorne Channel 3; before the invasion of the site, last week.

The oil field is yet to be commissioned.

Led by the Commander Nigerian Navy Ship (NNS)- Pathfinder, Commodore Suleiman Ibrahim, the destruction exercise which took place weekend, was conducted in collaboration with personnel of the operating company (NNPCL).

Addressing newsmen at the site, Ibrahim said the operation was inline with the charge of the Chief of Naval Staff, Rear Admiral Emmanuel Ogalla to ensure that oil theft and illegal bunkering activities in the Niger Delta was curbed.

He said the site was discovered by naval helicopter on patrol on the waterways and creeks in the area. “During one of our overflight, we noticed that some boats were illegally stealing crude from the wellhead, we immediately deployed two gunboats who came and ensured that the illegal activity was stopped,” said Ibrahim.

He said pipes and other equipments being used to steal crude oil from the wellhead were recovered from the site, adding that no arrest had been made.

He assured of the commitment of the Navy and other security agencies to track all those involved in the criminal act particularly, key players of the illicit activities, and equally ensure they were prosecuted.

“What I have seen on this site; the level of sophistication of the arrangement and connection of the illegal pipes from the wellhead and its careful distribution to the planned loading points I have not seen such anywhere.

“The individuals involved in this illicit act really took their time to accurately measure, mark out, and welded every bit of the pipes here on site,” he noted.

He assured that anyone linked to the obvious act of huge economic sabotage was being tracked and will soon be apprehended for questioning and prosecution.

“The Navy does not have that prosecuting powers. We make arrests and hand over to agencies that have the prosecuting powers but we try as much as possible to monitor the court processes to ensure that the needful is done, but we don’t decide what punishment the judges will give to offenders.

“But sometimes, I think these punishments is just like a tap on the wrist, it doesn’t really deter the people from committing these offences, but I believe the judiciary would do the needful to discourage these illegal activities,” he said.

Ibrahim further said that two wooden boats laden with unspecified quantity of substance suspected to be illegally refined diesel (AGO) were intercepted and set ablaze on their way to the oil field, adding that four occupants of the boats were arrested.

In Bayelsa State, Naval operatives attached to NNS SOROH recovered two AK-47 rifles, six AK-47 magazines, 133 rounds of 7.62mm ammunition from sea robbers.

The Navy also deactivated a local wooden boat used to convey illegal crude oil products in the state.

The Commander, NNS SOROH, Commodore Olushina Ojebode, revealed this yesterday during a press briefing at the Naval Base, Yenagoa.

Ojebode stated that the personnel of NNS SOROH during a water patrol at Gbaram community of Agbadam-Foropa encountered six armed men in a speedboat who attempted to attack troops.

He said the troops overpowered the armed men with superior firepower in the fight that ensued which made the sea robbers to flee.

Ojebode said: “The items recovered from the armed men include arms and ammunition; 2 AK-47 rifles, six AK-47 magazines, 133 rounds of 7.62mm ammunition, and one small Techno phone, among others.

“In another development, own troops during an anti-crude oil theft operation at Southern Ijaw discovered a wooden boat laden with illegal crude oil products. Accordingly, the boat was deactivated in line with extant regulation and standard operating procedure.”

The Commander vowed that with the successful operations at Tebidaba, Furopa and Ezetu, combing the Bayelsa maritime environment for oil thieves and operators of illegal bunkering and sundry-crimes was non-negotiable.

The Commander, while commending the troops for their gallantry and high level of professionalism, urged all law-abiding Bayelsans to continue to support the military and other security agencies with credible and actionable information that would assist in operations against the criminal elements.

The teenager was intercepted on Wednesday July 12, during an outward clearance of passengers on Turkish Airlines flight TK0624, Babafemi said.

According to the statement, while being interviewed by operatives, Daberechi claimed he was a student on his way to Cyprus for studies, but upon a thorough search of his luggage, he was found in possession of 7.2kg of whitish substance neatly concealed inside a sack of crayfish.

Babafemi said a field test of the substance however proved positive to Methamphetamine.

The NDLEA spokesman also said operatives of the agency at the Tincan Port Command on Tuesday July 11, intercepted 116.5kg consignment of Colorado, a strong strain of cannabis concealed in bags hidden in a heap of used vehicles’ parts on the floor of a container marked FCIU 8459700, bearing three units of used vehicles imported from Toronto, Canada.

The statement reads, “Based on intelligence, the agency had requested for a 100 percent examination of the container which arrived the TICT terminal of the port on June 14. A joint examination with the Nigeria Customs, DSS and other stakeholders on Tuesday 11th July however led to the discovery of 233 parcels of the illicit substance stashed inside travelling bags on the floor of the container, covered with used vehicles spare parts.”

“Also attempts to export various quantities of illicit substances through courier companies were equally thwarted by NDLEA operatives of the Directorate of Operation and General Investigations, DOGI in Lagos. While 336 grams of skunk stuffed inside computer hard drives going to Dubai, UAE, were seized at a courier firm, a suspect, Ibrahim Analu, 28, was arrested at Iddo motor park, Lagos while attempting to send 151,700 pills of opioids to Kaduna.

Similarly, officials of the Federal Capital Territory Administration, FCTA, weekend uncovered an illegal drug colony around AYA Roundabout, Asokoro, during raids, dislodging of notorious spots for environmental and sundry nuisances in the city.

Secretary, FCTA Command and Control, Peter Olumuji, who addressed newsmen after the exercise, said the hideout was smashed following credible intelligence from security agencies.

“We have been able to dislodge where they normally reside and that is a good development to those traversing around the place especially in the nighttime.

“We had gotten reports that people are being attacked whenever they are traversing this environment. But with the action that we have taken now, such criminal activities here have been reduced to the barest minimum, which we hope to sustain.

“For now, we are not able to make any arrest, because when we entered there, most of them had escaped,” he said.

Similarly, Deputy Director, Monitoring and Enforcement, AEPB, Kaka Bello, said: “AYA is one of the notorious places where we encounter a lot of challenges whenever we come for such cleaning exercise, given the rate of nuisance here, which has been abated. And the illicit drug related offences that were apprehended by the NDLEA officers.

“They are all interwoven and we are working together with other agencies to make sure that we abate such nuisances. And it is a daily thing, which we would continue to do, as the city must be clean.”
