    Yum Yum FC, etc

When you see kids of the same age bracket participating in any sport, what strikes you are the younger ones among them whose talent raises the hope of a greater future for watchers of the game. These younger ones tickle your fancy with how they struggle with their playing kits while playing games.  The Italians at the ongoing FIFA U-20 World Cup reminded me of their ages. Nigeria beat Italy 2-0 at the group stage but it was apparent that the Italians were the better side technically, given the way they despatched the Brazilians 4-2 in the first Group D game.

The Flying Eagles bullied the Italians, especially with how we scored the second goal. It was almost the same Nigeria scored her second goal against Argentina. Flying Eagles which beat the Italians are at home while the European kids are improving on their game with every match. The price you pay for fielding adults as kids in a kiddies tournament. Would I be surprised if the Italians get to play in the finals of the World Cup in Argentina? No.

Listening to commentaries during the matches, one is thrilled, informed and educated about the composition of most of the nations who partook in the World Cup and those still there until the end of the competition. The commentators repeatedly give you a brief history of the players particularly those who transited from U-17 to U-20. These commentaries help identify who the young lads, especially those taking after their fathers who are legends of the game.

The beauty about those kids of football stars is that they necessarily didn’t play for the fathers’ clubs, although a few of them did. The simple implication is that there is hardly any club in Europe without thriving soccer clubs or should I say sports for cadets – meaning getting young boys and girls to learn the rudiments of the sport peculiar to where they come from. A few of these soccer clubs also have basketball teams, hockey teams etc using their academies as the foundation to assemble the junior boys and girls for training. These academies strikingly encourage the kids to combine school work with playing the beautiful game, for instance.

The commentators drop the names of the clubs the young boys play for including those who have played for the countries as fringe stars. This kind of reminder helps listeners to realise that such countries have a pool of talents which they identify, nurture, train and expose to big tournaments such as the World Cup. One wasn’t shocked to hear that one of the Nigerians plays for Yum Yum FC. The cynical laughter among the commentators told the story. It could have been that the commentators typical of their jobs would have fact-checked Yum Yum FC and discovered that such a name is strange to the annals of Nigeria football.  Did I hear you say what was it about, dear reader? As for this writer, Yum Yum FC has come to stay. It is the only good thing about Nigeria’s expedition to Argentina.

The Nigerians and the Brazilians are out of the competition. Still, my appetite to continue watching the games arose from the clinical manner in which debutants in the competition, Israel ran the rule over the junior samba Boys. The Israelis came back from a goal down twice before clinching the win with final scores of 3-2. It was a game filled with drama with the theatrics getting to its crescendo, six minutes to the end of the game which ran into extra time. The rookies from Israel had a penalty in their favour. Twice the kick was missed which incidentally was missed by two different players. The two boys who missed the penalty kicks were naive and couldn’t control their nerves. Will you blame them? No way.

On Thursday evening the Israelis showed clearly by their ball distribution and cohesive style of play that beating Brazil wasn’t a fluke when they held the Uruguayans to a barren draw in the first half. Of course, the Uruguayans raised the game to ward off the Israelis’ attacking forays otherwise they would have been eliminated.  When the Uruguayans scored the goal that separated both countries in the 61st minute, they ensured that they blocked off the Israelis with every Uruguayan on the pitch covering the spaces knowing that their opponent on the night have a rich history of cancelling slim leads such as the 1-0 difference.

Definitely, European clubs’ scouts enjoyed every moment that the Israelis played knowing that they won’t be paying too much to lure them to the European leagues. Again, this new squad member has raised the pool of talents available to the head coach of Israel’s senior team. He also doesn’t have to persuade any big star to play for the country. Mention must be made of the witty decision of the Israeli FA chiefs to look for a coach, Ofir Haim with a good pedigree in handling club players to pick a good team at the cadet level.  Some food for thought for NFF board members on how to recruit coaches for Nigeria’s soccer teams. The tardy idea of recycling failed coaches by the NFF should be stopped forthwith.

Coach Ofir Haim has opened a new vista for the game. It wouldn’t be inappropriate to ask Ofir Haim to graduate with his boys to the senior level, especially as the next edition of the senior World Cup is just a few years away. Besides, Ofir Haim could also assemble a slightly older team by infusing into this squad much older boys who qualify to participate in the football event in 2024 in Paris. The prize for hard work and proper planning, if you ask. For all that anyone would say, Ofir Haim is a World Cup coach and is available to the highest bidder.  Indeed, the essence of the FIFA age competitions is to take the game to the grassroots to occupy the youth and take them off the social vices.

Again, the transition of players of one lower age grade to the bigger boys group fulfils one of FIFA’s goals and objectives. The Israelis have a future. What they need is exposure to competitions and getting to believe in themselves. Certainly, Israel isn’t a rookie in the game at least in the U-20 category. Congratulations welcome to the club.

With Uruguay playing in the final game of the 2023 FIFA U-20 World Cup against Italy in Argentina on Sunday, the Uruguayans can heave a sigh of relief that their ageing senior soccer team can be re-energised with some of the emerging stars in this U-20 side. The Uruguayans will play in the final against Italy, with the junior Azurris beating South Korea 2-1.

I don’t intend to write anything about how Nigeria fared in Argentina nor do I want to praise or chastise anybody for his role with the team.

In the last week, there has been nothing outstanding to celebrate in Nigeria’s sports. Sports have been taken to the courts while the participants wait in abeyance. Of course, the scheduled competitions must hold whether Nigeria is ready or not. Unfortunately, we remain a country without a football calendar which makes the game rudderless. For us to have a seamless soccer season, the organisers should develop a calendar that can’t be tampered with.

Democracy day: Tinubu to address Nigerians Monday

PRESIDENT Bola Tinubu will address the nation on Monday, June 12, in commemoration of Democracy Day, the federal government disclosed on Friday. Secretary to the Government of the Federation (SGF), Senator George Akume, who disclosed this on Friday while addressing a world press conference in Abuja, also unveiled a two-item programme for this year’s Democracy Day.

According to Akume, this year’s celebration would be kept low-key, owing to the fact that the nation just came out of an elaborate presidential inauguration programme. “It is important to note that the Democracy Day has been reviewed to be celebrated annually from May, 29 to June 12 to honour the heroes who championed the struggle and made extra-ordinary sacrifice for the enthronement of the democratic rule in Nigeria from 1999 till date.

“However, May 29 remains the date or anniversary of handing over or taking over of power, and this happens every four (4) years according to the Nigerian Constitution. To commemorate this year’s anniversary, it is expedient for citizens and foreigners alike to take stock of how the nation has fared so far and assesses the dividends that Democracy has ensued as well as areas where we need to make improvements.

“It is in light of this that the theme of this year’s Democracy celebration is ‘Hope Reassured’. It is pertinent to state that having had an elaborate Presidential inauguration this year, activities to mark the 2023 June 12, Democracy Day will be low key with the following two major activities: Presidential Broadcast, Monday, 12th June, 2023, 7: 00 am. The events will be broadcast live on all major stations and streamed on various social media platforms”, Akume stated.

Onana faces daunting task of keeping out Haaland

ANDRE Onana is bidding to hit the pinnacle of the sport and become a European champion, 855 days on from first being handed a ban for a doping violation. It’s a journey which would make some shrink from the challenge or play havoc with their mindset, yet setbacks – which feels too understated of a word – seem part and parcel of the Cameroonian’s career.

Indeed, it’s less that Onana’s story is one of a rise-fall-rise, and more of a non-stop, chaotic rollercoaster which travels an upward trajectory even as the stomach still feels like it’s heading the opposite direction.

And all of this is even before he gets to attempt stopping Erling Haaland and co.

For starters, the many months spent not being allowed to train or play with Ajax wasn’t the first time he had suffered such a fate.

Back after he joined his first club in Europe, Barcelona, Onana was one of the group of youngsters unable to play after the Spanish club were found to have breached recruitment laws, effectively banning him until 18 years of age. Coming back from that and then seeing Marc-Andre ter Stegen signed meant an exit was a certainty if he wanted first-team football.

The Eredivisie came calling and Onana signed for Ajax in 2015, then still a teenager. After a season and a half with the second string team, he was straight into the senior line-up and barely missed a game for four-and-a-half years.

Despite not signing for Inter Milan until this term, 2022/23, Onana’s last full season for Ajax was 18/19. The following year the Dutch top flight was curtailed early due to the Covid pandemic, while 20/21 saw him hit by a UEFA doping ban for accidentally ingesting his wife’s tablets, which contained a prohibited substance. The ban was originally 12 months, brought down to nine, but it meant he missed the rest of that campaign and much of the next, only featuring in six league games in 21/22.

Scientist settles Messi, Ronaldo GOAT debate

The long-standing debate over who is the greatest out of Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo has been settled, according to a key figure at Liverpool.

The two global icons have both scored more than 800 career goals, and have lifted 76 major trophies between them. They also share nine Champions League titles, with their rivalry reaching fever pitch when they were in LaLiga with Barcelona and Real Madrid respectively.

Many fans and pundits believe the pendulum swung towards the Argentinian last year though, when he helped Argentina lift the World Cup in Qatar. Regardless, the 35-year-old’s confirmed move to Inter Miami from PSG has signalled the end of an era, as neither star will now be plying their trade in Europe with Ronaldo playing in the Saudi Pro League.

And now Dr Ian Graham, who is seen to leave his role as a director of research at Anfield, has offered his own conclusive view. However, his views are not based on tribalism or favouritism, but rather extensive research and analysis of data.

“It’s Messi,” he said at the Cheltenham Science Festival this week. “The difference is that Messi is also a world-class attacking midfielder. The chances he creates for his teammates are an order of magnitude greater than Ronaldo. Messi does two jobs brilliantly. Ronaldo does one job brilliantly. That’s the difference.”

Puyol picks Pep among all time three best coaches

MANCHESTER City’s Pep Guardiola is one of the top two or three coaches of all time, former Barcelona team mate Carles Puyol said ahead of today’s Champions League final in which Guardiola will bid to win the trophy for a third time.

Puyol played alongside Guardiola for Barcelona and was captain of the Barca team managed by him a few years later, winning the Champions League in 2008-09 and 2010-11.

“I (played) with Pep for two years and to be honest you could already see these leadership qualities in him in all sorts of ways,” Puyol told Laureus Spirit of Sport. “The way he spoke, his commitment to the club, and you could already see him as a coach.

“For me, if not the best, he’s certainly among the top two or three coaches of all time.”

Puyol, who spent 15 years at Barcelona and won six La Liga titles as well as three Champions Leagues, said Guardiola was already the master tactician even when still a player under Dutch coach Louis van Gaal.

“Even having a coach like Van Gaal, who I love very much, sometimes Pep would even move us around, as a defender. He’d switch us into a back three, a back four at times,” Puyol said.”I clearly remember one game against Atletico Madrid and I was stunned at how he could be playing and still visualise the best way to defend.”

Guardiola has turned Manchester City into the dominant force in English football since arriving there in 2016.

He has won five of the last six Premier League titles and on Saturday City claimed the domestic double by beating Manchester United in the FA Cup final — his 11th trophy for the club.

Today, City face Inter Milan in Istanbul with the chance to emulate Manchester United’s 1999 treble.

Puyol said that while City, like Guardiola’s Barcelona sides, are blessed with attacking options, they also have the same defensive discipline.

  • Your laws contravene Nigerian constitution, ADVAN tells ARCON

Your laws contravene Nigerian constitution, ADVAN tells ARCON

Advertisers Association of Nigeria (ADVAN) has said that the provisions of the new advertising laws promulgated by the Advertising Regulation Council of Nigeria ARCON contravened the constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria.

The advertisers’ body said that the advertising laws in question violate the rights of advertisers and also stand as a restriction to freedom of contracts. They, therefore, called for further interpretation of the laws.

ADVAN’s president, Osamede Uwubanmwen, made this known during a chat with journalists in Lagos. An ADVAN document made available for the press revealed some of the incidents that have shaped the advertising space in the last few years.

According to the document, the cause of action in the intended suit is the breach of the constitutional and legal rights of ADVAN and her members by the provisions and operations of the enacted Advertising Regulatory Council of Nigeria Act, No. 23 of 2022, published in the Federal Republic of Nigeria Gazette No 120 of 5th July 2022, Vol. 109, Government Notice No. 87 with the commencement date of 27th day of June, 2022.

ADVAN stated that it would to institute a civil action against the Advertising Regulatory Council of Nigeria (ARCON).

Uwubanmwen said, “It is not in the entire law. What we did is to pick on the areas that we think are contravening the constitution. The question is whether this is under the law as part of the constitution. We are even questioning where they picked their law from; we compared and asked if they actually looked at the constitution before instituting the law.”

“That is how we came about the 50 things we think they need to look at again. This is supposed to be an industry law that supports growth and professionalism. We have sent letters to ARCON, NIMN, Minister of Information and Culture, and copied the ministry of trade which is our regulatory ministry. As I speak today, we have not gotten one single response.”““ADVAN president further explained that the laws that stipulate that payment be made in 45 days negate and stand as restriction of freedom of contract and are also against the tenets of a free-market economy as well as violate the law of contract, and are therefore illegal.

He emphasised ADVAN’s commitment to ensure debt-free transactions in all its dealings.“““In ADVAN, we have always pushed for an industry debt reconciliation committee, made up of ADVAN members, media buyers, as well as every stakeholder. If your members submit our invoices and say, you are being owed, the onus lies on ADVAN and whoever gave you the PO, the media buyer to say, ‘where is this debt?’ By that we would have been able to recognize who is owing who, and then give the person a mandate to pay.“““For payment days, there is what we call the cycle of converting raw materials to products to cash in every organization. There is a time limit to all that; it is what I sell from the product that will be used to sort out payment. If it takes me 90 days to convert the cycle to get the cash to pay, I will have to wait because that is where the money is coming from,” he explained.

David de Gea too good to lose for United, says McCarthy

BENNI McCarthy believes it would be a “crime” if Manchester United lost David de Gea this summer.

De Gea, 32, is out of contract at the end of June but could sign another lucrative deal after winning the Premier League Golden Glove last month. The Spaniard kept 17 clean sheets in 38 matches as the Red Devils finished in third and qualified for the Champions League next season.

According to reports, De Gea was offered a big-money move to Saudi Arabia but has turned that down to commit his long-term future to United. An agreement between the shot-stopper and United is believed to be close, although Erik ten Hag is still keen to sign another goalkeeper with Diogo Costa and David Raya both linked.

Amid claims about De Gea’s future, ex-striker and now United coach McCarthy admitted it would be a major blow if the Spaniard did leave.

Speaking to 947 Joburg, he said: “He kept 17 clean sheets in the league. Yes, of course you’re going to concede but to win the Golden Glove for yet another season is remarkable.
