What public officers can learn from Kumuyi at 82

    By Banji Ojewale

The international journalist, Baffour Ankomah of Ghana, is reported to have recorded the lengthiest interview session with Pastor William Folorunso Kumuyi, General Superintendent of Deeper Christian Life Ministry, DCLM. As editor of the London-based New African monthly magazine, Ankomah ran voluminous portions of his encounter with the revered Nigerian churchman in October 2006, revealing more than a treasure trove of the life and times of Kumuyi.

The Ghanaian newsman said what he served the public, old and new takes on Kumuyi, was bereft of the trappings you witness between the intrusive reporter and his evasive newsmaker, between a predator and his potential prey, or between a dispassionate journalist and an equally disinterested figure. The reporter was intentional in his bid to secure an uncommon interview with an uncommon man. He got it, but at a price: he travelled with Kumuyi across West Africa, following and studying the man of God as he preached to hundreds of thousands of the poor and enthusiastic folk who wanted to benefit from his prayers and messages of salvation, hope, restoration, healing and deliverance.

I believe Ankomah desired an archival (historic) product (interview) to emerge from his peregrinations with Kumuyi, which he grabbed, because to date, there are few journalistic publications, if there are at all, that have captured a near-bubbly picture of the clergyman and his evangelistic work. The work is more than a reflection of the activities of Deeper Life Bible Church and its founder, leaders and members. Naturally, you can’t labour on an enterprise like this without profusely addressing the person of Kumuyi, his background, his associates and his followers.

But of what use are your literary travails over a great public figure if they don’t, ultimately, push for an agenda to transform lives and change society, if they don’t teach that those who read of the greatness of the subject should be inspired to be like him or her? Why do we go to extreme ends to write (auto)biographies, if the goal isn’t to build a better society through the emulation of the eminent lives of  these citizens? Writings aren’t for the pleasure of their creators; they are for society to gobble and gain from. They’re out of the writer’s control once they escape from his fingers. The consumer takes over for good or bad. His takeaway decides the impact of the book or publication (or broadcast).

In the case of the Ghanaian editor, his takeout came at the close of his long introduction to the interview with Kumuyi. He wrote: ‘’Pastor Kumuyi…has positioned himself, and run his life in such a dignified manner…As such he wins respect everywhere he goes. Church leaders are rarely held in such high esteem. The irony is that he is such a humble man you would never think he is the one so regarded…by national leaders. His humility, in fact, is quite disarming! His selflessness, too, means that he draws no salary for the work he does, even though some of his junior pastors who are full-time (ministers) are paid for their service… Pastor Kumuyi does not touch money…The church takes care of his upkeep…In a way, Pastor Kumuyi reminds me of Ghana’s first president, Kwame Nkrumah. Like Nkrumah, Kumuyi has no property to his name, even though he is the leader of a mammoth organization…What a challenge!’’

There are apposite lessons. First, when we examine Kumuyi, we must be less awed by the superstructure of the Church God used him to found. We must focus more on the integrity, incorruptibility and inflexibility that have been his driving precepts as a servant of God and leader of men. Otherwise, we shall unwittingly pigeonhole the man with those who also have created mega Christian assemblies without the critical attendant moral undercurrents. Secondly, Kumuyi’s pact with God dictates his relationship with man and everything associated with this world. In that case, he disavows the material in order to bow to the spiritual. Number 3: Kumuyi has developed a backbone that stands him from the crowd; once he has taken a decision he believes is Biblical and not dissonant with the prescribed righteousness of Heaven. His sing-song is, Others may, I cannot.

All those who have met the man never fail to observe these traits. Those who haven’t met him but do write on him from secondary sources or by watching (or listening to) him preach can’t also escape a whiff of these attributes. But, as I said earlier of great personalities, our reflections on them are not to be caged in books; they must project into our lives. That’s when our heroes and heroines would be fulfilled that when they pass on, their outstanding deeds wouldn’t pass on as well. We would have taken the baton from them for the race to continue towards a goal for the improvement of mankind.

At a time Nigeria is witnessing a new crop of persons at the helm and with promises of a new beginning, I invite our public office holders and the political class into the world of Pastor Kumuyi. Overseeing that world is a God Who loathes leaders who are not servants of the led. He desires leaders who wouldn’t be leeches. This God wants Spartan helmsmen whose practical discipline would infect the entire citizenry.

Many today are overwhelmed by the gigantic strides of Deeper Christian Life Ministry which started 50 years ago in August 1973 with only 15 persons. The resplendent spectacle they behold refers them to Kumuyi, the man at the root of the whole story. But he in turn reroutes his stunned admirers to the Great Originator of what is petrifying them. Kumuyi tells them that they must rather adore the God Who gave him the gifts he has deployed over the decades to get the Church to this blazing height.

What we gathered from Pastor Kumuyi, then, as we marked his 82nd birthday on June 6, is simply that the God Who gave him First Class in Mathematics at the University of Ibadan, Who made him learn at the feet of an unyielding atheist without becoming an atheist, Who is still giving His servant in his advanced age grand evangelism strategies such as the current revolutionary brand, Global Crusade with Kumuyi, GCK, will heartily offer our policy makers exceedingly more endowments to govern selflessly if they also embrace His laws and fear Him as Kumuyi has done.

‘I never sponsored attack on my predecessor’

Chairman of Ifelodun Local Council Development Area (LCDA) in Lagos State, Olufemi Okeowo, has absolved his government of complicity in the harassment of his predecessor Fatai Ajidagba in the council secretariat.

Ajidagba, who sustained injuries during the attack by hoodlums, accused Okeowo and a lawmaker of sponsoring the attack.

Okeowo said he had no issues with Ajidagba and “we have never had disagreement. I am concerned the incident happened in the secretariat. G10 is a regular meeting in the council. It comprises opinion holders and leaders of thought in Ifelodun LCDA. It has never resulted into chaos or crisis that will call for police protection or security agencies. It is a meeting of likeminds.

“Immediately, the harassment took place, he (Ajidagba) came upstairs to report the situation to others.

“We saw they poured water mixed with sand on him. We did not see any blood stains. We rushed downstairs. He was the only person left while others were still fraternising. I am an Ambassador of Peace Initiative in my council. We called the divisional police officer in Amukoko to fish out perpetrators of the act.

“Ajidagba is my younger brother, I am proud of him. We have brought the issue before our leaders. I have made calls, sent letters; sent a team of leaders to him probably because he is still angry, he has rebuffed all entreaties. We still have a lot to do together. This ugly incident should not put our relationships asunder. We are not relenting in our efforts to restore sanity. We have directed leaders to hold meetings with their followers and warn them never to have a repeat of such incident.”

‘NAF admitted responsibility for fatal Nasarawa airstrike’

A report by Human Rights Watch (HRW) has said the Nigerian Air Force (NAF) has finally taken responsibility for an airstrike on Kwatiri, a Nasarawa village that killed over 35 people in January.

Over 300 people have been reportedly killed since 2017 by airstrikes that the Nigerian Air Force claimed were intended for bandits or Boko Haram terrorists.

In the report published on Tuesday titled: “Nigeria: No justice for civilians killed in airstrikes”, the HRW claimed that the Nigerian authorities “have provided little information and no justice for a military airstrike on January 24, 2023, that killed 39 civilians and injured at least 6 others.”

A day after the accident,.the state’s Governor, Abdullahi Sule, said the explosion in Kwatiri was not carried out by a NAF aircraft.

He said findings revealed that no Air Force plane flew through the area, adding that the bombing was done by a drone operated by yet to be identified persons.

But nearly six months after the incident, HRW report revealed that NAF has provided little information on the incident, calling on the service to provide financial compensation to the victims and bereaved families.

“The Nigerian Air Force admitted for the first time, in response to an inquiry from Human Rights Watch, to carrying out the airstrike.

“It said it was an air component of Operation Whirl Stroke, a joint military, police, and Department of State State operation deployed in response to security problems in and around Nasarawa state.

“The Air Force claimed it carried out the airstrike in response to suspected terrorist activities but provided no details.

“In a response on May 17, Air Commodore D. D. Pwajok, on behalf of the Chief of Air Staff, acknowledged that the Air Force carried out the strike based on credible intelligence and in synergy with other security forces and agencies in Nasarawa state.

“The letter said that Air Force surveillance footage showed the movement of suspected terrorists who converged around a truck suspected to be a logistics vehicle, which arrived at the location at night and was determined to be a target for the airstrike.

“The letter did not respond to key questions, including how information regarding the suspected threat was considered and verified, whether efforts were made to investigate and verify the identity of those targeted, or if any assessment was carried out before the airstrike to avoid or mitigate civilian harm.

“The absence of details raises the question of whether the Air Force carried out the airstrike based on mere suspicion. The letter concluded that the Nigerian Air Force is committed to upholding human rights and is open to further deliberations on the issue.”

The vice chancellor, chairperson at the induction of 31 graduates, said the state invested in training the graduates and putting facilities in the hospitals.

Admitting Nigeria is facing challenges in the profession,  she urged them to consider the country first on moral ground.

“If you want to touch lives, stay at home and build lives. You are graduating at the time the stake is high and seeking greener pastures may be appealing, but know your nation needs you more, Lagos State has invested so much in education,” she said.

  • Bayern set to offload Sadio Mane

Bayern set to offload Sadio Mane

Sadio Mane is the headline name on Bayern Munich’s seven-man transfer list ahead of the summer window, according to reports in Germany.

Thomas Tuchel, who narrowly guided Bayern to an 11th consecutive Bundesliga title on the final day of the season, wants a major rebuild at the Allianz Arena after what has been an uncharacteristically turbulent campaign for the German giants.

Bayern’s wingers appear to be first on the chopping block, with Mane, Leroy Sane and Serge Gnabry all reportedly heading for the exit door, according to German outlet Bild.

Right-back Bouna Sarr, goalkeeper Alexander Nubel and central midfielder Marcel Sabitzer, whose loan spell at Manchester United drew to a close at the end of the season, are also free to leave.

It’s understood Benjamin Pavard completes the seven-strong list after choosing not to extend his deal at Bayern.

The French international, who has attracted interest from Barcelona and Liverpool, is able to leave with immediate effect if a club offers Bayern just north of £25million (€30m).

Despite only signing Mane from Liverpool for £35m last summer, the Bundesliga giants are already prepared to listen to offers for the 31-year-old forward.

Mane only scored seven goals from 25 league appearances during his debut season and punched Sane in the face, wounding the German international’s lip, following Bayern’s Champions League exit to Manchester City in April.

The incident indicated the clear divide within Bayern Munich’s separated camp and came shortly after Tuchel’s arrival, with former head coach Julian Nagelsmann sacked by the club in the weeks leading up to the Champions League quarter-final.
