Diri, Bode George, Uzodimma renew calls for restructuring, effective federalism

    • • Political leaders seek national solutions at Freedom Online’s fifth lecture

Political leaders across partisan lines yesterday urged President Bola Ahmed Tinubu to restructure Nigeria and make the country practise effective federalism.

The political leaders spoke in Lagos at the fifth yearly lecture of an online newspaper, Freedom Online, with the theme: 2023 – 2027: Nigerians, Elected Leaders and Expectations.

Though they faulted many areas in the nation’s life, the political leaders expressed optimism that the situation was not beyond redemption.

They urged all political leaders to make the needed sacrifices and changes for the country to enjoy effective federalism that works for all citizens.

Imo State Governor Hope Uzodimma, who was the special guest speaker, noted that despite the challenges the country was facing, new political leaders have shown signs of tackling some of the issues militating against the nation’s progress and stability.

Uzodimma, who was represented by his Information Commissioner Declan Emelumba, said: “Nigeria is about the only country in the world that has no common denominator as we have about 250 ethnic groups. So, communication is difficult.

“Notwithstanding our diversities, all Nigerians understand one thing, and that is good governance.

“I am happy that the calibre of political leaders at the helm of affairs in the country has what it takes to deliver on their electoral promises.”

Bayelsa State Governor Douye Diri, who was the keynote speaker, harped on the need to reposition Nigeria for greater good of all.

Diri, who spoke through his Chief Press Secretary, Daniel Alabrah, said: “It’s over 60 years after independence. It is fair to say that Nigeria has failed to rise to its full potentials our fore-fathers envisaged.”

The governor expressed the hope that Nigeria would rise again, if the leaders at all levels did the right things.

To fast-track national development, he said the media must be actively involved in all national matters.

A former Deputy National Chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Chief Olabode George, urged Nigerian leaders to live and lead for a better future.

The retired naval officer said all Nigeria was going through had happened in Judah and Jerusalem of old.

Referencing the book of Micah in the Bible, George said the country would rise again, if the citizens, especially the leaders, followed the dictates of good governance and enthrone the fear of God.

He said: “Let us put an end to inequality in the management and distribution of our resources.”

The former Ondo State military governor also decried fat financial allocations to legislators.

“A situation where the legislators collect humongous amounts and other Nigerians, who have served the nation meritoriously, are being given peanut as pension is unacceptable,” George said.

The PDP chief called for a new constitution to make the country work for everybody.

“The present constitution of Nigeria is from the military setting. In the military, orders come from the top. But in a democratic setting, power comes from the people.

“We must revisit how we want to run ourselves.  The present constitution will never work.

There’s no part of this country that God has not endowed with one resources or the other,” he said.

George urged President Tinubu to revisit the report of 2015 National Confab.

“We need to revisit the restructuring report commissioned and completed by former President Goodluck Jonathan…

“I believe strongly that if we put the fear of God before us, Nigeria will rise again,” he added.

The Publisher of Freedom Online, Akin Akinadewo, said it was high time we drew a line between politics and governance.

The experienced journalist said the time had come for Nigeria to restore effective federalism and allow the regions, states and local governments to develop at their space.

He said: “When do we draw a line between politics and governance? We can’t be doing same thing in same way and expect a different result.

“A situation where the Federal Government takes a large chunk of the financial earnings in the country is no longer sustainable. The sharing formula is no longer sustainable. Development begins at the local and state levels. Agriculture can be done at both state and local levels.”

“The Federal Government cannot continue to use a central method if the expectations of Nigeria would be met. Nigerians want state police between now and 2027. Nigerians want governance to be decentralised. The world is moving and Nigeria cannot afford to be stagnant.”

Chief of Army Staff commended on sports transformation

The Nigerian Army’s Acting Director of Physical Training, Brigadier General Abdulrahman Bello has praised Chief of Army Staff Major General Taoreed Lagbaja for his tremendous transformation in sports since assuming office.

Bello made the remarks on Sunday after the COAS Spikers volleyball team won their various matches on Day 4 of the ongoing 2023 Nigeria Volleyball Premier League in Abuja, adding the results obtained can be due to appropriate preparations prior to the start of the league.

“We give glory to God and Major General Taoreed Lagbaja, Chief of Army Staff, for giving us this opportunity to present the Nigerian Army (NA) team to the nation,” he stated. “All of this was possible because of the financial assistance and support provided by Army headquarters.

“These volleyball league players have been in camp and have been training for it.” So the success is not surprising to me since they trained for it and we got it.

“As you can see, the morning match was quite exciting. We lost the first two sets against the Kada Kings but defeated them in the third, fourth, and fifth set. We could not have done it without the help and hard work of our players.”
When asked about his motivation for resurrecting the COAS Shooters handball team, he stated that involvement in sports demands fitness and that troops can acquire fitness by participating in sports.

“We know the importance of sports in the NA; without sports, you cannot have a soldier,” Bello added.
“Sports are about physical fitness, so what we are trying to do is that the Chief of Army Staff wants us to be fit to fight and win a war, and the only way we can be fit to fight and win a war is via physical training.

“To ensure that many of us are physically ready to fight and win a war, he concluded, the Chief of Army Staff is investing in every sport to determine how we can engage our soldiers to revive many of these activities,” he said.

  • Criminal herdsmen are repenting, says Ganduje declares

Criminal herdsmen are repenting, says Ganduje declares

Former Kano State governor, Dr. Abdullahi Ganduje has assured the public that crime herdsmen are now born again.

He said stakeholders and intellectuals in the Fulani committees had begun to come together to see that insecurity being resolved.

Ganduje also said the administration of President Bola Tinubu is willing to deploy technologies into forests to monitor criminal gangs that have made them their hideouts.

The former governor said this yesterday in Abuja at the inaugural meeting of the Coalition of Pastoralists Organisations in Nigeria, aimed at bringing together organisations and stakeholders towards working in harmony in addressing problems facing the Fulani community.

Ganduje also said pastoralists would have to be convinced to agree to a modern system of livestock production and the need for settlement.

His words: “In the sense that we have laid the nucleus now, we are coming together, citizens engagement among the herdsmen, we are going to gather a larger community of intellectuals, of major stakeholders to see that this issue of insecurity is resolved, at the same time expecting something enabling environment from the federal government.

“Right now, security agencies are working very hard to fish out the bad eggs and criminal herdsmen, especially with the new hope by the President. Technology will be introduced in our forest so that it is easy to monitor them and security agencies will be more committed and we are calling on those people to be born again to come back to the society so that they can benefit with other people. But it is true that there are bad eggs just like in any other tribe. But this is an issue and herdsmanship is an issue now.

“First of all, as you can see, we are requesting the government provide an enabling environment that is a sustainable livestock production reform. Secondly, we want to convince ourselves that we are committed to peace and stability in Nigeria so that we can also benefit from an enabling environment provided by federal governments.

“As you are fully aware, if our herdsmen can agree to a modern system of livestock production, then there is a need for settlement. Settlement requires land and after being resettled. There are other services required to be provided to the communities of herdsmen.

“The system of herdsmanship would be modernised, artificial insemination to be introduced, livestock laboratories to be built, markets to be provided, sales of milk to be enhanced, security to be provided and education for the children of the herdsmen, this is a complete way of life.

“And by doing so we are improving the livestock production in Nigeria. So that is what we’re looking for. That is the ultimate goal. But this cannot happen until livestock production is reformed. And this cannot happen until the herdsmen themselves are convinced that they can adapt to the new system of production. And this will eventually bring peace and stability.”

Former Bauchi State governor, Mal. Isa Yuguda explained that Ganduje had organised a national conference on culture conflicts that brought together stakeholders in the Pastoralists communities during his time as Governor and the engagement led to a blueprint that would the presented to President Bola Tinubu.

Yuguda said that although criminal herdsmen are not the only ones causing problems in Nigeria since every tribe has its own bad egg, the document that would be given to the President would prefer solutions to the problems that have to do with security of the nation, which is associated with banditry.

He said the coalition believes the document would guide the government on how to solve the problem in its entirety.

Applause as CAF’s instructors’ course ends in Abuja

Participants at the first-ever CAF Coaching Instructors’ Course held in Nigeria between 6th and 15th July have hailed the leadership of Nigeria Football Federation for working assiduously to ensure that the course became a reality.

The course content included classroom and practical modules handled by CAF Elite Instructor and FIFA Technical Expert Abrham Mebratu, and 15 of the best coaches in Nigeria were involved in the pace-setting train-the-trainers on-field drills and theoretical grills.

President of NFF, Alhaji Ibrahim Musa Gusau, who attended the closing ceremony, said he was fulfilled that the first-ever course has finally taken place, opening the gate for more such courses for Nigerian coaches to really develop themselves.

“Without any disrespect meant, the truth is that most of our coaches are just calling themselves ‘coaches’ without having any real grasp of modern tactics and techniques. With this course, we can now begin to see positive changes as the new instructors will be encouraged to organize courses for the benefit of colleagues.”

Augustine Eguavoen, NFF Technical Director, who was among the group of 15 participants, said: “It was an interesting experience for me. Now, we have 15 coaching instructors in Nigeria who can organize coaching courses for their colleagues. It is a great feeling and our coaches will be the better for it.”

Eguavoen and staff worked their socks off for weeks putting the dots and marks in the right places, and he says he feels fulfilled that everything went as planned.

“Mr Mebratu is a genius, a hard working one at that. Tireless and well-grounded. I believe that our coaches, including myself, gained so much from the course,” Eguavoen added.

The group of 15 also included president of the Nigeria Football Coaches Association, Isah Ladan Bosso (who recently took the Flying Eagles to the quarter finals of the FIFA U20 World Cup in Argentina), former Super Eagles’ captain Daniel Amokachi, Alphonsus Dike, Stanley Eguma, Wemimo Oni Mathew, Henry Abiodun, Sam John Obuh, Edema Fuludu, Bala Nikyu and Lawrence Ndaks.

Also at the closing ceremony were NFF 1st Vice President, Chief Felix Anyansi-Agwu and Executive Committee members, Alhaji Sharif Rabiu Inuwa and Alhaji Babagana Kalli.
