  • Buhari to Muslims: Shun violence, killings and extremism

    From Augustine Ehikioya, Abuja

President Muhammadu Buhari has said that the greatest honour Muslims could do the Prophet Muhammad is to follow his shining examples of non-violence, peaceful disposition and remarkable virtues of patience.

This was contained in his goodwill message to the Muslim Ummah on the occasion of the Maulud celebration to commemorate the birthday of the Prophet Muhammad.

Buhari, according to a statement by the Senior Special Assistant on Media and publicity, Malam Garba Shehu, said: “Putting into practice the great virtues for which the Holy Prophet Muhammad is historically famous and revered would have a far greater impact on changing our attitudes and behaviours than the best sermons ever will.

“The indiscriminate killing of innocent people, the kidnapping of female students and forcing them into marriage and conversion is contrary to teachings and personal examples of the Prophet Muhammad.

“Violent extremism is the single biggest challenge facing the image of Islam today which has been hijacked by a minority of misguided elements who are using religion to cover-up their criminal agenda.

“There is the urgent need for increased vigilance by Muslims in order to frustrate and stop the spread of violent ideologies that are causing human havocs and tragedies around the world.

“Extremism is like a cancer that needs to be attacked in its early stages before it grows malignantly out of control and harm the society.” he said

He also advised Muslims not to allow their children to be lured and recruited by extremists who will ultimately destroy their lives and future.

While wishing the Muslim Ummah a peaceful celebration, the President urged them to use this occasion to renew their resolve in promoting tolerance, love, harmony and peaceful coexistence in the country.

President Buhari also sent special goodwill messages to the Emirs of Daura, Alhaji Faruk Umar Faruk; Kazaure, Najib Hussaini Adamu; Hadejia, Alhaji Adamu Abubakar Maje Haruna; and that of Gumel, Alhaji Ahmed Mohammed Sani, whose people celebrate this festival, named Sallar Gani, with greater fervour as well as prayers for the unity, progress, and prosperity of Muslims in Nigeria and around the world.

  • TUC to govs: stop spending money on frivolities

    By: Frank Ikpefan, Abuja

The Trade Union Congress of Nigeria (TUC) has advised Governors who say they cannot implement the consequential adjustment as a result of the N30, 000 new minimum wage to stop spending money on frivolities.

The union said this in a statement jointly signed by TUC President, Comrade Quadri Olaleye and Secretary General, Comrade Musa-Lawal Ozigi, on Sunday in Abuja to mark the Muslim Holiday.

Although the Organised labour said that it was not willing to cause more harm because of the state of the economy, it said that it may be forced to act if the governors do not perform.

The statement reads: “That the economy is ailing and the organized labour is not willing to cause more harm. However, we may be forced to act if the governors do not perform.”

The labour leaders called on Muslim faithful to abide by the teachings of Prophet Mohammed (PBUH) which they said bordered on piety, charity, tolerance and peaceful co-existence, among others.

According to the statement, if Nigerians read the books and live by their tenets the country will be a better place, adding that the problem of the country has never been the issue of religion.

It lamented that the unity the people once cherished was no longer there because of politics.

“At this time of the country’s national life it has become very imperative for all Nigerians irrespective of their religious background to cooperate with the progressives in the country to transform and make the country fulfill her manifest destiny.

“Until we uphold the above stated virtues with a view to overcoming our current national challenges we cannot achieve much as ineffectiveness, mediocrity, backstabbing and impunity have become the order of the day.

“There are too many absurdities in our clime. The unity we once cherished is no longer there because of politics,” the statement said.

The labour leaders called for peace in Bayelsa and Kogi during November 16 elections in the states.

“Elections should not be a do-or-die affair. The enforcement officers must be neutral; and carry out their duties without bias.

“They should remain committed to the unity of the country and ensure that the programmes of the federal government are actualised,” the statement added.

  • Two students die in swimming expedition

    By Rasaq Ibrahim, Ado Ekiti

Tragedy struck in Ureje area of Ado Ekiti, Ekiti state capital, on Friday when two secondary schools students died inside a river during a swimming competition.

The 13-year-old and 15-year-old were students of Ado Grammar school located along Ado-Ijan- Ikare Akoko.

Multiple sources, who don’t want their names in print, told reporters on Sunday that the two students died at a deeper portion of Ureje river, which stretched from Ajilosun and flowed down to Odo Ado region of the Ado Ekiti metropolis.

They said about seven students were reported to have scaled the fence when academic works were ongoing to swim in the river, where two of them were drowned.

“The academic works were ongoing when they left school. They went to the deeper side of Ureje river to swim and two of them were trapped in the mud and died .

“One of the survivors said though four of them jumped into the river before sensing that the two victims were no longer floating on the water.

“Those on the river cliff had to run to a farmer working around the river. It was the man who called on some swimmers farming in the area to come and rescue two that were still afloat before bringing out those that were already dead.”

The sources added that the farmers later ran into the school compound at about noon to report the incident to the teachers, evoking cries and wailings among the staff and students.

When called for confirmation, the Police Public Relations Officer, Ekiti Command, DSP Caleb Ikechukwu, said the corpses of the dead students had been deposited in the morgue.

“We learnt the students went to the river to swim and got drowned. Their bodies had been taken to the mortuary”.

Ikechukwu said other students who were part of the swimming expedition would help the police in conducting thorough investigation into the pathetic incident.

  • Guber poll: We’ll overrun Bello, APC across Kogi, PDP vows

    By Gbade Ogunwale, Abuja

The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has said that it will overrun Governor Yahaya Bello and his All Progressives Congress (APC) in the November 16 election in the state.

The main opposition party said not even the threats of violence from the Governor and the APC will deter it from sweeping the votes in all the senatorial zones, including the governor’s Kogi central senatorial zone.

In a statement on Sunday by the spokesman for the PDP, Kola Ologbondiyan, the party decried alleged threats by the governor to unleash violence and disrupt its campaigns in the central senatorial district.

The party said already Governor Bello is distressed by the massive support the PDP and its candidate, Musa Wada have been enjoying in the central district and across the state.

The PDP also condemned the violent attack on the state secretariat of the Social Democratic Party (SDP), allegedly by APC thugs and urged the Police to bring the perpetrators to book.

The statement said: “As a party, we have on a good authority how Governor Bello and his agents have been threatening the lives of PDP leaders in Kogi Central, all in their failed bid to instill fear on the people and frustrate our campaigns in the area.

“However, the PDP cautions Yahaya Bello and his party to note that nothing will stop our party and the peoples’ candidate, Engr. Musa Wada, from campaigning and consolidating our support in Kogi Central and across the state.

“The people of Kogi state are on the move with the PDP in their readiness to confront and dismantle the machinations of Yahaya Bello and no amount of violence and death threat can change this resolve”.

The party called on the Inspector General of Police, Mohammed Adamu, and the military hierarchy to note how the governor has turned the state into a theatre of war and making life unsafe in the state.

“Our party draws the attention of security agencies to reports that APC and agents of Governor Yahaya Bello have a training ground for thugs in Kogi Central District, who would be later armed with dangerous weapons to perpetuate violence during the election.

“There are also reports that the APC and agents of Yahaya Bello are sewing fake military, police and Civil Defence uniforms to be used by their thugs to cause mayhem during the election”, the statement added.

The PDP charged the police and military authorities to call the governor and the APC to order as well as to take urgent steps to ensure adequate security to safeguard lives and property in the electioneering time frame.

The party called for the immediate arrest of a former ADC to the governor who has continued to remain in the state despite his transfer to Lagos State a few weeks ago.

The PDP hinged its call for the arrest of the said ADC on reports that he is being used by the governor to compromise the security architecture of the state and aid the APC to perpetuate violence and all sorts of manipulation in the electoral process.

“Our party urges the IGP to immediately arrest and relocate the said former ADC as the people of Kogi state are ready to confront any irresponsible officer who is working against their interest in this election,” the statement added.

  • No crack in House–Spokesman

    By Victor Oluwasegun, Abuja

The House of Representatives has denied that a rift exists among its members.

A statement signed by its spokesman Rep. Benjamin Kalu on Sunday said that the 9th House under the leadership of Speaker Femi Gbajabiamila has no division either between the principal officers or the membership.

Kalu was reacting to reports on some media platforms alleging there is a crack in the House .

The statement reads: ” The attention of the leadership and Membership of the 9th House of Representatives have been drawn to the recent publications made and distributed by a few media platforms alleging “there is a crack “ on the wall of the unity of the House .

“The publishers supported their position with a mere screen shot photos of internal personal arguments between members of the Joint task team on their Whatsapp platform administered by the aide from the office of the leadership.

“There was no form of verification sort from the office of the Spokesman of the House for confirmation or otherwise before such publication . By our House Rules, at all times, the official spokesperson of the House remains the credible source for any information affecting the 9th Assembly.

“The 9th Assembly under the leadership of Rt. Hon. Femi Gbajabiamila, absolutely, has no division either between the principal officers or the membership and the leadership. The public is therefore, asked to totally ignore such ill intended publication aimed at misdirecting them.

“It is important to note that comparatively, since the 5th Republic , the 9th Assembly remains the most united house, where members are motivated by the leadership culture and style of the Speaker which have been a selfless one devoid of any anti nationalist element but rather focused on true nation building, which has been bought by the membership who have all keyed into the legislative agenda set as the road map towards the achievement of this mission.

“Granted, that one or two dissenting voices as expected may not completely be on board the mission train, but not conceding that such negligible opinion represents the majority interest of the 9th House of Representatives, I urge the public to focus on the 15 agenda of the 9th Assembly and what it represents for the people of Nigeria.

“The media which we have recognised as an important partner in this nation building task should also be mindful to avoid encouraging peddling of baseless rumours, propaganda and other forms of information disorder either through information over load or under load aimed at deceiving the public.

“Beyond being the traditional source of news, the media remains in our eyes the strategic tool for national peace , unity and progress.”

Aremo Osoba, who dragged Okunrounmu, an Alliance for Democracy (AD) Senator from 1999-2003 through his Counsel, Chief Wole Olanipekun SAN, before a State High Court in Abeokuta, the state capital, on Friday, is demanding N3bn damages.

  • Maina on life support, medication for 15 years – Family

    By AbdulGafar Alabelewe, Kaduna

The family of AbdulRasheed Maina has refuted claims by an online media that he is feigning sickness and receiving presidential treatment in Kuje Correctional Facility where he is being detained.

The family state that Maina has been on life support and medication for the past 15 years.

Sahara Reporters had reported that the ex-chairman of Pension Reforms Task Team, who is facing charges of N2 billion fraud and was brought to court last week on wheelchair, is only feigning illness while receiving presidential treatment in the Kuje Correctional Facility.

But the family, in a quick reaction, said Maina is on life support due to his deteriorated hereditary condition.

A statement signed by Abdullahi Usman for the family said: “Our attention has been drawn to news headline published online by Sahara Reporters insinuating falsehood concerning the health and trial of the former Pensions Funds chief, Abdulrasheed Maina.

“Contrary to the report, we wish to clarify on some allegations made by the news outlet concerning his health situation and the ongoing trial. It is absolutely not true that Maina is receiving any presidential treatment in Kuje prison where he is being detained. He is placed under the usual prison conditions in an uncomfortable cell that is dilapidated.

“It is also a figment of the imagination of those who concocted the lies that Maina is receiving visitors at will. It is in fact a more difficult task than the usual prison processes of visiting detained person, to gain access or be allowed to visit Maina in detention. Several family and friends have made efforts to see him but all to no avail.

“It is indeed embarrassing to the Assistant Comptroller of Kuje prison to have been falsely accused of receiving cash bribes to delay or stop presenting Maina before court with sole intention to hinder justice when the need arises as feigned by the online news medium. How and where would Maina that is not allowed visitors get cash to bribe any official, comes to every right-thinking mind because it is a blatant lie.

“Maina was on life support, medication for over 15 years, you can confirm this from his medical records. Maina had survived on control drugs treatment for many years and his condition got deteriorated due to lack of access to his prescribed medications while in detention, a hereditary health condition also being faced by his son Faisal Abdurrasheed. He also suffers severe back ache due to the ill-condition of his place of detention.

“Recently, Maina spent three days in the prison hospital and is seriously indisposed to stand trial in that condition. The court acted rightly based on medical reports presented to it for which it moved the case further to allow him resuscitate.

“We wish to disabuse the mind of the general public that Maina, who is surviving on support from friends and relatives since he left his position, has any money to the extent of using it to compromise witnesses through bribery. This is also an insult on the presumed witnesses to be presented before the court by his accusers.

“It shows a sense of desperation on their side. In as much as it would not be ideal to accuse his detention of being purposely done to give room to present fake witnesses to the court, it is also wrong to claim that if he is released on bail he would bribe the witnesses. Are they paid by his accusers to stand against him?

“We wish to remind the general public that Maina is only a victim of circumstance. He was in a position where a lot of people thought they could exploit and loot pensions funds which he disallowed. He is today paying the price for protecting the pension funds from looters and extorting funds termites. We therefore call for justice not only be done but be seen to have been done.”

  • Akwa Ibom West: Akpabio battles Ekpenyong after Appeal court ruling

    From Bassey Anthony, Uyo

Niger Delta Affairs minister, Senator Godswill Akpabio and his opponent, Senator Chris Ekpenyong are back in the ring to battle for Akwa Ibom North West Senatorial district seat in the National Assembly.

The appellate court on Saturday ruled that the incumbent Senator, Ekpenyong did not win in Essien Udim, Akpabio’s council area, and therefore ordered a rerun in that local government area in 90 days.

Akwa Ibom North West(Ikot Ekpene) Senatorial district is made up of 10 local government areas.

It could be recalled that the Independent National Electoral Commission had declared that Ekpenyong scored 114,973 votes winning in all nine local government areas, while Akpabio scored only 76,917 votes.

INEC record showed only 19,455 were accredited in the last elections in Essien Udim.

Political analysts who spoke with our correspondent yesterday have continued to assess Akpabio’s chances. They said it would be a herculean task Ekpenyong’s victory to be upturned with results from only one local government area.

They were quick to observe that Akpabio will be going into the rerun with a deficit of 38,056 which he needs to overturn Ekpenyong’s victory.

One of them said, “Akpabio and Ekpenyong will be struggling to get all if not most of the 19,455 accredited votes in Essien Udim.

“It would definitely not be possible for Akpabio to garner all the 19,455 votes in Essien Udim and even if he does it won’t really make much difference to him because he needs 38,056 votes to win.

In fact, it will be a tall dream for him to expect that Ekpenyong will not snatch a substantial number of votes out ot the 19,455 votes in the area.

“He reasoned that since Ekpenyong is going into the contest with votes advantage against Akpabio and it would be impossible for Akpabio to counter the over 38,056 difference given the fact of the number of accredited voters, the turn out and intervening variables”.

The INEC in Akwa Ibom in a statement signed by its public affairs officer, Don Etukudoh said the the Court of Appeal in Calabar has affirmed the position of the commission that there was widespread violence and irregularities during elections in Essien Udim LGA.

“The Court re-affirmed as valid and preserved the elections as declared by the Commission in 9 out of the 10 LGAs that make up Akwa Ibom North West (Ikot Ekpene) Senatorial District.

“It, however, ordered a rerun of the Senatorial election within 90 days in Essien Udim LGA ONLY, where the Commission had decried the massive rigging and manipulations that culminated in the dubious award of 61,329 votes to Senator Akpabio alone in the LGA, intended to upturn the results of the other 9 LGAs. This was when the accreditation figure from the Smart Card Readers (SCRs), confirmed by ticks on the Voter Register for the entire Essien Udim stood at just 19,455.

“The Commission rejected this travesty and maintained its position despite pressure, blackmail and threats to lives of lNEC officials.

“The Court also ordered fresh elections in the same Essien Udim LGA in respect of the House of Representatives seat while upholding elections in Ikot Ekpene and Obot Akara, the other two LGAs that constitute the Federal Constituency”.

Though Akpabio is yet to issue any official reaction to the court ruling, his special assistant on media, Anietie Ekong said Akpabio and his legal team were still studying the judgment and will come out with an officlal position on the matter on Tuesday.

The All Progressives Congress(APC) in a statement signed by its publicity secretary, Nkereuwem Nyongekere, however, said that the Appeal Court ruling on Saturday has exposed that truth was ‘hurriedly murdered and buried by the Tribunal in Akwa Ibom’.

“The Court of Appeal sitting at Calabar in Cross River State in its ruling has nullified the election of Dr. Christopher Ekpenyong who was wrongly declared the winner of the National Assembly election in Akwa Ibom North West Senatorial District on February 23, 2019.

“The ruling in its entirety is a testament that will open up the eye of the world to the misappropriation of justice meted out to All Progressives Congress (APC) in Akwa Ibom State by the National Election Tribunal at Uyo in collusion with unprogressive forces in PDP and INEC in Akwa Ibom State”.
