  • Aisha Buhari underscores need for greater awareness on cancer detection, treatment in Africa

    By Agency Reporter

Mrs Aisha Buhari, wife of Nigeria’s President, has underscored the need for greater awareness on cancer in African countries to promote early detection and treatment.

Mrs Buhari gave the advice at the “Walk Away Cancer’’ awareness campaign organised by the Medicaid Cancer Foundation, a Non-Governmental Organisation on Saturday in Abuja.

Mrs Buhari, who was represented at the event by Dr Hajo Sani, her Senior Special Assistant on Administration, commended the organizers of the 2019 edition of the campaign.

According to her, awareness about cancer in other parts of Africa has become important to promote its early detection and treatment in nations of the continent.

Buhari said: “We must walk cancer out of Nigeria and every woman, girls, including men must be informed about cancer and to know what they can do possibly to prevent it.

“We should go into competition with other African countries; we need to challenge them to engage this kind of massive involvement of men and women against cancer.

“We are sure of actually beating other African countries to such fights; we have already taken the steps and the awareness is most important, because prevention is better than cure.

“It will be great achievement for awareness to spread to other parts, because the main focus is to promote the well being of women and children through protection from cancer.

Speaking, Dr Zainab Bagudu, Founder of Medicaid Cancer Foundation, said for there to be effective control of cancer in the country, state governments must key into fights against cancer.

According to her, Nigeria is a big country, therefore, there is the need to start doing things at global level.

“It is important that each and every state starts to look at it at their level and to start by establishing a screening programme.

“The Federal Government has screening programme for almost everything, we have a plan but to implement it is where the problem lies.

“Four cancer screening centres belonging to government located in Abuja and in Lagos University Teaching Hospital are all concerted efforts; after all the ones we have broke down.

“If state governments can start screening at local governments by giving vaccination to women and girls, we can eliminate cancer, by giving school girls the vaccination,” Bagudu said.

She said although Nigeria was endowed with both human and natural resources to achieve meaningful development, political will was needed at the state levels.

Dr Femi Ogunremi, Managing Director of Monitor Healthcare Ltd, identified breast cancer as a major health challenge that affected women and girls in the country and needed to be detected and treated early.

Ogunremi told the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) that breast cancer could result to death if not treated.

“If eight to 10 patients were to be diagnosed of breast cancer and we follow them for the next five years, only one or none of them will be alive.

“If you go to developed countries and do same thing, you will realise that about nine or the whole ten will be alive, so there is lot of issues in the country.

“The issue is we do not screen our ladies, so a lot of our ladies present their cases at advance stage and when they present such, some come with ‘fungating’ cancer,” he said

The physician, however, called for measures to be put in place to find lasting solution to breast cancer and other terminal health challenges. (NAN)

  • NDLEA parades 15 suspected illicit drug dealers, consumers in Abia

    From Sunny Nwankwo, Umuahia

The Abia State Command of National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) has paraded 15 suspected dealers and consumers of illicit drugs arrested by its operatives in the state.

Mr. Akingbade Bamidele, the State Commander of NDLEA in a Press Conference said that the 15 suspects who were all male were arrested in Aba, the economic nerve center and Umuahia, the state capital during a raid on drug joints in the two major cities.

The NDLEA boss added that in adherence to the governor’s directives to the agency to ensure operation zero black spots in Umuahia and its environs, the agency in collaboration with the officers of Nigerian army at the weekend conducted a raiding operation in Abia community; Olokoro, Umuahia South LGA where dried leaves suspected to be cannabis of about 50kg were seized and two persons arrested as well.

“We also carried comprehensive raid operation in Umuahia between Thursday and Friday last week with the Nigerian army where we seized 75kg of Cannabis, Tramadol and some packets of Rohypnol.”

According to the Abia State NDLEA boss, the exercise is going to be a continuous one as the agency aims at ensuring that the activities of dealers and sellers of various hard drugs were nipped in the bud.

Bamidele who was pained that under aged children in the state are already into selling and consumption of illicit drugs disclosed that he is collaborating with some Non-Governmental Organizations (NGOs) including Vica Hope Foundation; An NGO of wife of the Abia State Governor, Deaconess Nkechi Ikpeazu to fight the scourge.

The NDLEA boss who disclosed that the agency is already pushing for the inclusion of Drug Education into the state curriculum, also hinted that efforts were on ground to collaborate with traditional rulers across the 17 LGAs of the state for the establishment of Drug Free Clubs in their communities as measures to take the campaign against illicit drugs to the rural areas.

“Between January and September, we have 325 suspects. We have seized 720kg of illicit drug substances. Because of the high rate of the abuse of psychotropic substances, we are now beaming our light on Ariaria Market and other patent medicine dealers in the state.

“What we are targeting are mainly Tramadol, Benylin, Rohypnol and Diazepam because we have lately discovered that the youths are shifting away from the traditional illicit drugs like Cannabis, Cocaine and Heroin to psychotropic substances because that they (psychotropic substances) are easy to keep; they don’t have odour and it still gives them the same feeling that they get when they take on Cannabis and others.

“So, what we have done between January and now is that we have been able to seize close to 750, 000 tablets of Tramadol and Rohypnol.

“You recall that in the month of February, we recovered a Diazepam compounding laboratory in Aba and we have been able to closedown that clandestine laboratory. In the process 414kg some tablets suspected to be Diazepam and some tablets that have been compounded were also seized.

“In addition to this, we are increasing our collaboration with other sister security agencies, especially the Nigerian Army that have been very supportive to our operations and the DSS that have been giving us useful intelligence with which we have been acting upon in our counter narcotic activities in the state.

“We have been carrying out raiding operations in the state with the Nigerian Army which have been largely successful.

“Also within the period, we have arrested two suspects, but we later discovered that they are hardened criminals that have been on the Police wanted list for robbery and kidnapping.

“One was arrested in Aba and the other one in Arochukwu by our officers. We have handed over to the police for continued investigation into their matter.

“Out of the 75 cases filed in court, 41 cases have been concluded and sentenced. We have gotten approval from the Federal High Court to destroy about 7tons of illicit exhibits that were seized. Thankfully, the state government has supported with logistics to be able to carry out this destruction. We are however, expecting our headquarters to take a date for this unique exercise to take place. This is the first time since the inception of the command in 2003 that we are going to carry out such exercise.

“Last week, we commenced operation zero black spot in Umuahia with the assistance of the state government and directives from the state governor that there should be no standing black spot in Umuahia.

“In adherence to the governor’s directives, we conducted a raiding operation in Olokoro, Umuahia South LGA with the army.

“During the raid, we seized dry leaves suspected to be cannabis of about 50kg and arrested two persons. We also carried comprehensive raid operation in Umuahia between Thursday and Friday last week with the Nigerian army where we seized 75kg of Cannabis, Tramadol and some packets of Rohypnol.”

Speaking on Drug Supply reduction, Akingbade said “In Umuahia also, two hotels were raided. Eight suspects were arrested in connection with the seizure. This is going to be an ongoing exercise until our desired results in cutting the chain between the drug suppliers and those that are using the drugs is achieved.

“In the area of drug demand reduction, the NDLEA Commander thanked Abia State Governor, Dr. Okezie Ikpeazu for the support that the government has given the agency to enable it carry out its operations in the state.

“He hopes that the support will continue in order to help them fight sale and consumption of illicit drugs.

“We have come to realize that by own analysis that as long as there are demands for any illegal substance, there will always be supply even in countries where such attracts death penalty.

“But what we are trying to do is to emphasize more on Drug Demand Reduction so that we can reduce the number of the people demanding for these drugs so that the price of these commodities can come down and it will not be worthwhile for them to be in that business any more. We are working with four NGOs including the foundation of the Wife of Abia State Governor Deaconess Nkechi Ikpeazu); Vicar Hope Foundation.”

  • PDP’s reconciliation shaky in Bayelsa

    Mike Odiegwu, Yenagoa

Efforts by the national leadership of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to reconcile the two major camps of the party in Bayelsa State ahead of the November 16 governorship election have not yielded expected results.

It was gathered that the state Governor at the buildup to the primary election and politicking that produced Senator Douye Diri as the Candidate of the party divided the state PDP into restoration and non-restoration members.

Former President Goodluck Jonathan and a former Managing Director, Niger Delta Development Commission (NDDC), Timi Alaibe, who were classified as non-restoration members, lost out completely in the party’s choice of candidate and running mate.

While Alaibe, a frontline non-restoration governorship aspirant during the internal poll, is in court challenging the process that led to the emergence of Diri, Jonathan, who felt sidelined, was said to have abandoned the ongoing campaign to Dickson and his state party leadership.

It was gathered that a reconciliation committee chaired by a former Senate President, Dr. Bukola Saraki, was battling to reconcile the aggrieved party leaders and convince them to work for the victory of the PDP at the poll.

But a party leader, who spoke in confidence, described the party’s reconciliation efforts as belated saying that most of the foot soldiers of Jonathan and Alaibe had already left the PDP and vowed never to come back.

“This reconciliation should have come before September 23, the last day for substitution of candidates at the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC). Most of the people, who are leaving waited for the national party leadership to intervene and mount pressure on Dickson to make some concessions.

“But these defections and resignations by political appointees started after the closure of candidate substitution. For instance, most of the Jonathan’s foot soldiers that left the party have vowed not to come back. Even Alaibe’s loyalists have also moved on. Most of them left because they were disappointed at the choice of candidate and running mate”, he said.

It was further learnt that the committee had yet to make productive contact with Jonathan, who was said to be out of the country.

While some said Jonathan decided to stay away to avoid undue pressure, others said the former President was on a United Nations Peace mission.

But a member of the restoration team, who spoke in confidence, said the efforts of the committee were yielding positive results.

He said talks were in a gear adding that soon Alaibe and Jonathan would work with other PDP leaders for the victory of Senator Douye Siri and his running mate, Lawrence Erwujakpor.

“I can assure you that the committee is making positive efforts. Soon, the former President and Alaibe will work for the victory of Douye Diri at the poll,” he said.

Signs that all was not well with the reconciliation emerged following exchange of hot words between the PDP leadership in the state backed by Dickson and Alaibe.

The state Chairman of PDP, Cleopas Moses, in a statement said that the party was not under any threats from the APC following defections.

The PDP State Chairman said that all those who defected from the parties were persons readmitted into the party with Alaibe in November last year.

According to him, the supporters of Alaibe whose original motive was to support him under the platform of the ADC and who were readmitted into the PDP with him in November were the ones leaving for their party.

Cleopas who urged the members of the PDP to ignore the stories of defections within the party said that only those members of the APC who were defeated by the PDP in the 2015 elections defected to their base to await a more crushing defeat.

He listed the politicians to include Chief Peremobowei Ebebi, Prof. Seiyefa Brisibe, who was Alaibe’s Campaign Director-General, now alternate DG in APC, Chief Nimi Amange, APC Senatorial Candidate , Hon. Enegesi, Mike Ogiasa, Beinmo Spiff, Octopus, and Hon. Tiwei, Orunimighe, a former State Chairman òf the APC who came with Alaibe.

He said, “The good people of Bayelsa State should ignore the orchestrated report of defections in the PDP. The fact is that Chief Timi Alaibe mobilized some passive members of the party and opposition elements to pursue his gubernatorial agenda. These are the people who are defecting.

“Alaibe’s supporters whose original objective was to support him on the platform of the ADC came to fight within the party and these are the purported party leaders who are leaving. They All came with him from the APC in November this year.”

But Alaibe in a statement signed by his Special Adviser, Enize Ogio, accused the party chairman of lying unreservedly to members of the public.

The statement said: “The party chairman unreservedly lied to the public when he stated that Chief Alaibe was directly responsible for the mass exit of previously prominent members of the PDP to the main opposition party in the state, the All Progressive Congress.

“It would have been appropriate, under certain circumstances, to ignore Chief Cleopas ranting on behalf of his evil-minded sponsors whose mission is to search for who to blame for their failures in party leadership. But doing so would mean denying the Bayelsa people and indeed other Nigerians the opportunity to know the truth so as not to be misled by this cooked-up falsehood.

“For avoidance of doubt, Chief Alaibe is not in any way responsible for the defection of these respectable Bayelsans from the PDP to any other party. How would he do such a thing when he has personally, in repeated signed statements, made it clear that despite pressures from all quarters, he would remain in the PDP and that he would not be persuaded to abandon the party though his desire for the governorship of the state was tragically aborted by Chief Cleopas and his ilk.

Read Also: Kogi PDP ticket: Judge to deliver judgement ten days to election

“It is so unfortunate that at a time Chief Cleopas and his sponsors should be apologising to the good and patient people of Bayelsa State for presiding over the conduct of the most procedurally flawed primary election in the history of the state—an election that deprived the people of the opportunity to choose their next governor—they are busy grandstanding and looking for who to blame.

“This is the second time in two months that Chief Cleopas has found it convenient to allow himself to be used by his pay-masters to tell blatant lies against Chief Alaibe in attempt to rubbish his reputation without considering the legal consequences.

“It is sad to note that at a time the National Headquarters of the PDP has set up a committee to reconcile and bring aggrieved members of the party back to the political family after the defective primary election, the party leadership in Bayelsa State is embarking on further self-destruction, just three weeks to a crucial governorship election’ by bandying falsehood against someone who could reinvent and mobilise the people against the already anticipated failure of the party at the poll on November 16.

“It should worry every member of the PDP that Chief Cleopas, instead of burying his head in shame that the party he was elected to lead is disintegrating on his watch, is noisily going about advertising his glaring incompetence by attacking someone whose public service records and leadership qualities are far beyond his imagination.

“Let it be known that those who have left the PDP for other political parties in Bayelsa State are merely fed-up with the ineptitude of the current leadership of the party in the state exemplified by the partisanship exhibited in the last governorship primary election. Their exit has nothing whatsoever to do with the insinuations made by Chief Cleopas and his sort. Chief Alaibe still remains a member of the PDP.”

     Kolade ADEYEMI, Kano.

The Minister of Agriculture and Rural Development, Muhammad Sabo Nanono, on Saturday in Kano, reaffirmed the Federal Government’s plan to establish 635 farming service centres across the 635 Local Government areas of the country.

He also confirmed that the federal government in no distant time install 17 rice mills in Kano, as part its determination to boost agriculture and ensure food security in the county.

During a town hall meeting, with farmers group, associations and critical stakeholders held at Coronation Hall, Government House on Saturday, Nanono, also disclosed that the entire equipment to be used in the centres will be produced locally.

However, he expressed optimism that rice revolution in the country will ascend to the next level, to tally, with the slogan of the Muhammadu Buhari-led administration.

The minister explained that the installation of the 17 new rice mills and the revival of the existing ones would increase rice production output and curtail the effects of border closure on food sufficiency and security.

Nanono stressed the need for farmers in the country to embrace modern agriculture, considering the over 70 million farmers, out of which only 14,000 are experts in modern agricultural techniques.

He noted that,” globally, there is change in the Agricultural sector, which has gone beyond the irrigation farming to mechanized farming.

According to him, “what is before me now, with the closure of the nation’s borders, is to encourage our farmers to produce mass rice that will make the rice mills in the county to work for 24hrs.

“This is why the federal government is planning to come up with a programme across 632 local government areas, where the service centres would equip farmers with modern Technology.”
