  • AEC’ll proffer homegrown solutions to Africa’s problems

    By Moses Emorinken, Abuja

African Economic Congress (AEC) will proffer home grown economic solutions by Africans for Africa, which will be like no other, and will be without the usual foreign narratives and agendas we have been used to.

This was disclosed by the Chief Executive Officer of the African Economic Congress, Nancy Illoh, during a press briefing Monday in Abuja.

She explained that the annual meeting which will take place from 4th to 6th of November at the Shehu Musa Yar’Adua Center, Abuja, will focus on “Building the Africa we want”. The congress is platform to shape a new framework for Africa’s cooperation.

According to her, “The African Economic Congress will focus on the strategic ramifications of the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA) and its future impact on Africa’s global cooperation and the African Industrial Revolution.

“The congress will contribute to this debate by explaining and promoting its priorities and policy actions to address challenges in areas like Trade and Investment, agriculture, economic policy, climate change and energy

“During the sessions, participants will also engage in an in-depth dialogue with a number of international financial institutions, economic stakeholders, industry players, and the international finance corporation, in order to review the development and adoption of policies and mechanisms for the engagement and effective participation of peoples”.

She explained that invitations have been extended to the Vice Presidents of some African Countries Kenya, Zambia, Ghana, Burudi, Zimbabwe, Zambia, Botswana and Liberia.

“Dr Godwin Emefiele, CBN Governor, Dr. Babatunde Fowler, Executive Chairman, FIRS, Mitchell Elegbe, MD lnterswitch, Dr. Adesola Kazeem Adeduntan, Managing Director/Chief Executive Officer, First Bank of Nigeria, Mr. Demola Sogunle, Stanbic IBTC, Dr. Fatoumata Ceesay, Former Speaker Gambia Parliament, Aliyu Abdulhameed, MD/CEO, NIRSAL, and a host of others have accepted the invitation of the congress and will participate in a range of sessions and meetings with leaders ftom politics, business and society from across Africa,” she said.

“The challenges of corruption, bad governance, sit-tight syndrome of political office holders, youths unemployment, poverty, human right abuse, terrorism etc cannot undermine the great height Africa can reach.

“Evil fingers of xenophobia and the prospect of African Continental Free Trade Agreement are two opposite sides of the future of African children.”

The Chairman of the board of the African Economic Congress, Dr. Obadiah Mailafia, said, “The concept is unique and not an attempt to mimic any event. It is about the Africa way. It is about the Africa we want and not what development partners think that we deserve. Second, it is Afro-centric; it is Africans talking to Africans about what they believe and are deeply convinced is good for our continent.

“We are sitting on enormous resources. We don’t have to be a beggarly nation where our young are more concerned with travelling out of the country to other more developed countries to find a non-existent Eldorado.”

For the CEO of Connected development, Mr. Hamzat Lawal, “the conference is a platform for Africans, talking to Africans about the African problems, and proffer ‘Africanised solutions’-driven approaches.”

“On Thursday, October 10, 2019, some hoodlums invaded a meeting of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Ikpoba Okha Local Government Area (LGA) and this was followed by an attack on the Chief of Staff to the Governor, Mr. Taiwo Akerele, at Protea Hotel on Saturday, October 12, 2019.

  • Oyebode, others laud Fela’s contributions to societal change

    By Agency Reporter

Prof Akin Oyebode and some other African activists on Monday lauded the contributions of the late Afro-beat musician Fela Anikulapo Kuti to societal transformation.

Oyebode — a professor of international law and jurisprudence — and the others spoke at the 2019 Felabration Debate, with the theme, ‘’Teacher Don’t Teach me Nonesense’’ , at the NECA House,Alausa,Ikeja.

Felabration is a festival of music and arts commemorating the life and times of Fela Anikulakpo Kuti, which was conceived by his eldest child, Yeni, in 1998.

With the exception of 1999, Felabration has taken place annually in honour of the late musical icon who was born on Oct. 15, 1938 and died on Aug. 2, 1997.

The speakers at the Felabration Debate said that going by its theme, Fela, through his music, was able to educate and entertain a good number of people.

Oyebode described the late Afro-beat musician as an iconoclast and a musical genius who was able to effect societal change through his music.

He said that Fela used his music to give confidence to Nigerians and contributed to national development.

” Fela was the greatest African musician who demonstrated how African values had been eroded by putting firewood on his newly purchased Mercedes Benz.

” His music never dies due to the strong messages they convey; his music remains indelible, his heritage has survived more than 20 years and will go forever,” he said.

A Ugandan musician and activist, Robert Kyagulanyi, said that the late afro-beat maestro was a man who lived before his time, and was silenced before the emergence of social media.

He said that Fela had explored music as the most powerful means of communication and as an agent of promoting social change in communities.

Kyagulanyi enjoined African musicians to adequately use their music as tool for effecting change in the society like Fela and Bob Marley did.

” Fela influenced me so much, likewise most of Nigerian authors like late Chinua Achebe and more; this is because they have been able to contribute to societal growth.

” I want African musicians to imbibe Fela’s style of educating and entertaining the populace through his music; musicians have overwhelming power to change the society, they should be conscious of this,” he said.

A British journalist and activist, Kingslee Daley, also known as ‘Akala’, also called on people to always seek for knowledge and not take whatever “nonsense they were taught.”

Akala said that the internet and social media had made it easier for people to research whatever information they wanted.

A Nigerian playwright, Sefi Atta, said that Fela’s performance was outstanding when compared with other musicians who only tagged themselves as activists.

“Afro-beat guides my principle and ideas. There is so much to learn from Fela’s songs. So, I am not surprised some other artistes identify with him.

” Musicians should be careful how they handle Fela’s messages, as some artistes are seen to be using Fela’s music at the expense of his message.

” You will see music videos with the Afrobeat showing flashy cars and clothes, which is contradictory to Fela’s messages; they are teaching nonsense.

” I will urge those in charge of Fela’s works to protect his message, which is as important as protecting the copyright,” she said.

  • Edo 2020: Owan West APC leaders insist on Obaseki

    By Osagie Otabor, Bénin

Leaders of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Owan West local government have reiterated their support for the second term bid of Governor Godwin Obaseki and his deputy, Hon Philip Shaibu.

The Owan West APC leaders dismissed report credited to Ward 3 chairman, Raymond Osumah, that all the APC Ward Chairmen in the locality did not endorse Obaseki.

A former lawmaker in the Edo Assembly, Hon Blessing Agbebaku, said only three Ward Chairmen are not in support of the second term ticket of Obaseki.

Agbebaku said all APC leaders are driving the Obaseki/Shaibu project.

His words: “APC Owan West is with Obaseki. I and other leaders are supporting Obaseki. The coming back of Obaseki is a task that must be accomplished. It is sacrosanct.

“Any individual saying rubbish in the papers means nothing to us. In my area, we have good roads, our schools are being renovated so we are with Obaseki based on what he has done.

“Those opposed to the second term of Obaseki are enemies of the government. They should drop their witch craft mind and let the heart of God go into them to see Obaseki project as a sincere project so that we can continue to have more development in our area.”

Chairman Ward two in Owan West, Mr. Aroye Lucky, said the comments by Osumah were wrong as there was no time 11 Ward chairmen asked him to speak to the press on their behalf.

He said: “I saw the report that Owan West did not endorse Obaseki. That is a lie. You do not use one interview to generalise the entire local government. APC is one big family in Owan West.

“There was no time 11 Ward Chairman said they did not say we do not endorse Obaseki. I am not part of that report. We are fully in support of Obaseki.”

Chairman of Owan West, Mr. Ilaboya Frank, said the second term of Obaseki was non-negotiable.

Ilaboya said it is a project he is driving in Owan West.

“It is my duty to talk to the party structure and I have been doing that. We the leaders of APC are behind Obaseki.

“I have been having meetings with stakeholders. I invited the Chairmen and they told me there is no problem.

“No sooner had we taken that report the other people started threatening some of them.

“It was Macdonald that called Ward 8 chairman who was not in that meeting to grant interview. This project is we have to drive. I have no apology for calling anybody.

“If one chairman spoke because he was threatened that is their headache. “

  • NCC commited to end use of pre-registered SIM cards in Nigeria —- Official

The Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) says it is committed to clamping down on the sale and usage of pre-registered SIM cards in the telecommunication industry.

The Southeast Zonal Controller of the commission, Mrs Emilia Nwokoro, disclosed this on Monday, when she paid a courtesy visit to the zonal office of the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Enugu.

Nwokoro described the usage of such SIM cards as a crime, saying that anyone caught selling pre-registered cards would be arrested and prosecuted.

She said that the commission had begun to mop up pre-registered SIM cards in the zone and advised subscribers with such cards to ensure that they completed the registration process.

She appealed to subscribers to always buy and register their SIM cards in controlled environments.
“The sale and usage of pre-registered SIM cards are illegal and that is why we are mopping up such cards.

“Our enforcement team is already in the field clamping down on those selling such cards by the roadside,” she said.

The zonal controller said that as a telecom regulator, the NCC had the responsibility of ensuring that the sector did not aid criminal activities.

On complaints of poor network service, Nwokoro said that subscribers were at liberty to take advantage of mobile number portability to get better service from any network of their choices.

“When a subscriber is not satisfied with the telecom operator, he has the right to port and this affords him the opportunity to change to any network of his choice while retaining his original number,” she said.
She called on subscribers to take advantage of NCC’s toll-free lines to send complaints about poor services in the sector to the commission.
