News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the Appeal Court on Friday, upheld the judgment of the Kogi National and State Assembly Election Petition Tribunal and ordered a fresh election within 90 days.

According to Melaye, I just lost my election at the Appeal Court and Fresh election ordered.

“In all things I give God the Praise. He who started a good thing will definitely complete it.

“I ask my supporters to be law abiding as we shall always overcome. To God be the Glory.”

Melaye, representing Kogi West at the Nigerian Senate, lost his appeal on the tribunal judgment that sacked him as a senator two months ago.

It would be recalled that the Kogi State National Assembly and State Assembly election petition tribunal sitting in Abuja, nullified Melaye’s election in August.

Melaye was declared the winner of the Kogi West Senatorial election by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) during the February 2019 general election.

The results declared by INEC showed that Melaye who contested the election on the platform of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) scored 85,395 votes to defeat Smart Adeyemi of the All Progressives Congress (APC) who polled 66,901 votes.

Adeyemi later approached the tribunal to challenge Melaye’s victory and was declared winner on Friday.

A three-man panel led by Justice A. O. Chijioke in a unanimous judgment accepted Adeyemi’s ground and ordered for reelection into the Kogi West senatorial district.

Displeased with the judgment of Justice Chijioke’s led tribunal, Melaye approached the Appeal Court to appeal the ruling.

The Appeal Court eventually upheld the judgment of the tribunal and ordered a fresh election within 90 days.

  • Falana calls for active student’s unionism in Nigerian universities

    By Agency Reporter

Mr Femi Falana, a Senior Advocate of Nigeria (SAN), on Friday called for an immediate lift of the ban of students unions in all Nigeria universities.

Falana said this while delivering the 9th Convocation lecture of Caleb University, Imota, Lagos, titled: “Managing Freedom and Illusions of Achievement”.

He lamented that instead of producing critical thinkers, our universities had specialised in producing robots, as the lack of student unionism in public and private universities was breeding zombies.

The legal luminary noted that students and staff unions would contribute meaningfully to the search for solution to the myriad of problems confronting the country if they are allowed to operate without fear of proscription.

“Our first generation universities were citadels of learning, as they promoted ideas and encouraged students to challenge the status quo.

“It is on record that some of the best legislators in the country were former members of the students’ parliaments.

“There were progressive lecturers who spoke truth to power without harassment from the management of tertiary institutions,” he said.

According to him, there must be a deliberate policy on the part of progressive students to take the National Association of Nigeria Students (NANS) back from the government.

Falana said effort must also be made to re-position NANS to defend and protect the interest of students.

“The other day, an alumnus of a private university was charged for cultism and cyber crime, denied bail and detained in a prison for many months for criticising the facilities in his alma mater.

“Six lecturers have just been dismissed in another state university for exposing mismanagement of the funds allocated to the school.

“To cover up such corrupt practices and other iniquities, the management of the university have subjected all academic and Non-Academic staff to swear to an oath of secrecy,” he said.

The SAN said the laws of the land and the rules and regulations of every tertiary should be observed and respected by all and sundry.

According to him, it is only by following laid down rules that impunity and abuse of office could be fought and defeated in the society as a whole.

Falana, however, charged Nigerian graduates and youths to team up with people of like minds to engage in political activities.

He said the politics of the country should no longer be left in the hands of professional politicians who have proved themselves incapable to address the crisis of underdevelopment.

The eminent lawyer said the development of Nigeria depended on its great assets — the human beings, especially the youth, as you cannot develop a knowledge economy without huge deliberate investments in human capital in the areas of education and health.

Falana said that the future of Nigeria is not oil but the economy has to be opened up and expanded to create jobs because without industrialisation the economy could not develop.

In his address, Prof. Nosa Owens-Ibie, Acting Vice -Chancellor, Caleb University, said that the institution churned out 733 graduates compared to 409 and 477 graduates it produced in 2017 and 2018 respectively.

Owens-Ibie said out of the 688 graduates, 556 are undergraduates and 179 postgraduates.

He said 24 students made first class at the undergraduate class, 235 made second class upper, 255 made second class lower, while 40 graduates made third class.

The acting vice-chancellor said at the postgraduate level, 19 students made distinction and 160 students made pass.

The professor named the overall best student in the 2019 class, tagged “Topaz”, as Miss Otibhor Imuse of the Department of Biochemistry with a Cummulative Grade Point Aggregate (CGPA) of 4. 85.

He said the overall best graduand at the postgraduate level is Temitope Adedayo-Ojo, Master of Business Administration with a CGPA of 4. 96.

The vice-chancellor said the graduating students would demonstrate to the world that Nigeria was the breeding ground of geniuses with a lot to offer.

Ibien-owens, however, solicited for support from stakeholders in terms of endowments, structures and other relevant contribution, as the institution evolve into a global brand.

Prof. Fola Tayo, Pro-Chancellor of the university charged the students to be a strange, odd and unusual individual who is out to make a change and cannot fit into the Nigeria corrupt and inhuman cage as they go into the world.

“You have been prepared and equipped to live and work and excel in this perverse and crooked generation.

“Let me assure you all that God is with you and he will never leave you, nor forsake you as you stand on his side,” he said.

Chairman of the committee, Mohammed Abubakar, a former Inspector General of Police (IGP), made the disclosure while presenting the committee’s report to the governor on Friday in Gusau.

He said that the report covered the period from June 2011 to May 29, 2019.

He said the money was collected from 3,672 victims whose relatives paid to secure their freedom.

Abubakar said that a total of 4,983 women were widowed, 25,050 children orphaned and 190,340 persons displaced by banditry over the period in the state.

The former IGP said, to achieve sustained peace, the state government should take over all farmlands situated on grazing routes and adopt modern livestock farming to encourage herders to remain in one place.

Abubakar said that the committee had recommended unconditional disarmament and setting up of a judicial commission of inquiry backed by law to address all forms of banditry in the future.

  • Be ready to hold your leaders accountable, Omo-Agege tells Nigerians

    By Agency Reporter

Sen. Ovie Omo-Agege, Deputy Senate President, on Friday, called on Nigerians to be ready to hold their leaders accountable to ensure good governance.

Omo-Agege made the call in Abuja at the 10th Annual Independence Lecture titled: “Social Contract and Leadership in Nigeria: Experience and Prospect.’’

The event was organised by The Change We Need Nigeria Initiative (TCWNNI).

The lawmaker, represented by his Chief of Staff, Dr Otive Igbuzor, noted that “when leaders are not checked and are not held accountable by the people, the natural thing for them is to please themselves.

“This translates to expropriation of the commonwealth and a tendency for some leaders to see their personal interest as the interest of the people they govern.’’

According to him, another famous Greek thinker, Aristotle, also supporting this, noted: “For man, when perfected, is the best of animals, but, when separated from law and justice, he is the worst of all.’’

He said that social contract in politics is an unspoken bargain between government and the people where the former is obligated to deliver good governance and the latter, loyalty and total acceptability of the authority upon which government operate.

Mr Anthony Sani, Secretary General of Arewa Consultative Forum, corroborated that social contract is all about responsibility and obligation.

According to him, the present leadership in the country seems determined to remove sand bags on the path of socio-economic development.

“One way it is doing this is the fight against corruption which is the mother of all challenges,’’ he said.

Sani added that the government was also tackling the insecurity in the country in order to make it secure for everyone.

He, however, urged government to continue to encourage responsibility and inspire inclusiveness through sense of participation.

Mr Yinka Odumakin, Spokesperson for Afenifere, said there was need to have a binding contract between various nationalities in the country so that everyone can live together in peace.

The convener of the event, Dr Cosmas Ilechukwu, said that “social contract furnishes the fundamental principle for legitimisation of any government.’’

He said the core thesis of the social contract theory was that government exists at the behest of the people for the protection and promotion of the general well-being of the people.

Ikechukwu, who is also the General Overseer, Charismatic Renewal Ministries, said that the constitution contains the tenets of social contract theory, which if paid attention to, would ensure common good for the people.

  • Keyamo vows to fight piracy in entertainment industry

The Minister of State for Labour and Employment, Dr Festus Keyamo, has said the Federal Government would intensify efforts to fight piracy in the entertainment industry.

Keyamo said this when the members of Actors Guild of Nigeria (AGN), Abuja Chapter, led by its Chairman, Mr Alvin Ahmed, paid him a courtesy visit on Friday.

He expressed concern for the rate at which intellectual property of artistes were lost through piracy, noting that if left unchecked, the scourge would affect the growth of Nollywood, Nigeria’s film industry.

He assured the Nollywood members that the ministry would collaborate with other government agencies to tackle piracy.

“By so doing, the intellectual property would be protected, the industry would grow and more employment would be created.”

Acknowledging the socio-economic importance of Nollywood to the nation, and its huge capacity to generate employment, the minister assured the AGN of government’s effort at promoting the industry.

He stated that government had made available funds for the industry and encouraged them to access the funds, urging them to meet the conditions attached.

According to him, other ways to grow the industry is for government to invest heavily in infrastructure, such as building film villages, providing state-of-the-art equipment and post-production studios, and making them affordable for young producers.

Earlier, the leader of the delegation, Ahmed, sought collaboration with government to promote the film industry.

“We are film makers, creative people, actors, producers. We want to have synergy with government. Nollywood wants a voice, a projection, while we need our voices to be heard,’’ Ahmed said.

He also stated the desire of Nollywood to collaborate with government to put the visions and plans of government into visuals.

Ahmed said the industry had contributed a lot in job creation by making people to earn a living from entertainment, acting and film making.

He then requested for government assistance in promoting the industry.

“Nollywood has been there for long, creating employment for a whole lot of people.

“There is no age limit in its employment, as little children, youths, adults, the old, physically challenged and so on, are all employed by the industry.

“In Abuja alone, Nollywood has close to 6,000 actors, remove Nollywood, and these people will be on the street looking for jobs,” he said.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that after India’s Bollywood, the Nigerian film industry is the second largest in the world based on annual production.

Nollywood produces an astonishing average of 50 movies per week, employing approximately a million people in the process.

However, this booming industry, with an estimated yearly revenue north of 5 billion dollars, is being crippled by an endemic piracy and corruption problem that is devouring no less than half of that sum in unearned profits.

  • Makinde, Oyo APC trade words over N7.6b loan

    By Bisi Oladele, Ibadan

The All Progressives Congress (APC) in Oyo State has berated Governor Seyi Makinde and Speaker Adebo Ogundoyin over expressed approval of a fresh N7.6 billion loan aimed at reviving two farm settlements in Ido/Ibarapa East Federal Constituency of the state.

The House of Assembly on Thursday approved the governor’s request to borrow the sum three months after a similar request to obtain a N10b “infrastructural loan” was granted, bringing the total to N17.6b.

The approval was granted amid opposing voices by legislators who wanted the loan to be applied to farm settlements across the state.

The APC, in a statement by its Assistant Publicity Secretary, Prince Ayobami Adejumo, condemned what it described as the “conspiracy of bad governance” between Makinde and Speaker Ogundoyin over an alleged disrespect for the opinion of majority of his colleagues who had questioned the rationale behind the fresh loan request at the plenary on Thursday.

It reads in part: “The current governor has succeeded in bringing the whole machinery of local government administration to a halt completely and to further demonstrate his resolve to drag Oyo State backward by many years within the shortest period of time, we have again been made to see the need for the concerned citizens to beam their searchlight on the PDP administration of Engr. Seyi Makinde as financial indiscipline is now the order of the day in the business of government.

“As much as we would not even like to dwell much on the futile attempt by Gov. Makinde’s media handlers to change the narratives on the controversial fresh loan, the whole world has realised that the present administration is here to mismanage resources and enmesh the state in an inimical debt crisis. Without a clear cut action plan, the Makinde administration has made itself a good customer to many financial institutions as it gets all forms of loans.

“Unfortunately again, most of these loan transactions are done covertly and to the disadvantage of the good people of the state.

“The latest N7.6 billion loan, as announced, by the state legislature was different from the N10 billion obtained three months ago even as tongues are already wagging on what has become of the whopping over N17b billion which came into the state government treasury in the month of June alone.

“Apart from the statutory payment of salaries to government workers, nothing concrete has been done by the PDP government since May 29, 2019.

“The orchestrated Light-Up Ibadan City project and purchase of 100 security cars have not come to any fruition even when bogus amount of state funds had been expended on them without any due process.

“Oyo has a governor who would always singlehandedly design capital projects and approve funds for their execution without any recourse to State Executive Council.

“As if this was not enough, he has found an ally in the Speaker who overrules his colleagues at will only to dance to the tune of Mr. Governor.”

Reacting, however, Makinde described the loan approval as victory for the people of the state.

He pointed out that the loan was in pursuit of agricultural sustainability and economic emancipation of the Makinde administration.

In a statement through his spokesman Mr Taiwo Adisa, the Governor said the loan was borrowed from the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) for “agricultural equipment” by the immediate past administration of Governor Abiola Ajimobi.

Makinde maintained that contrary to insinuations that he was obtaining an additional N7.6 billion loan after an initial approval for N10 billion loan facility for infrastructure development, the N7.6 billion loan had already been approved by the CBN before he got to office.

He added that the apex bank had begun to deduct money from Oyo State’s Federation Account Allocation Committee (FAAC) allocations from source to repay the loan.

The Governor stated that his administration had only approached the House of Assembly to seek approval to change the purpose of the loan facility so that it could be put to better use in developing farm estates in Eruwa and Akufo farm settlements in a pilot scheme that will be used as a model for the state-wide farm estate initiative of the administration.

Makinde further explained that limiting the scope of the project to Akufo and Eruwa Farm settlements, which were in the same federal constituency, was to allow for effective planning, monitoring, evaluation and coordination for the pilot scheme, adding that the project would extend to other settlements across the state, as his administration will remain fair to all zones in the state.

The statement added: “The farm estates will serve as pilot schemes for our Private Public Development Partnership (PPDP) farm estates and will eventually generate funds to develop the other seven farm settlements in Oyo State. This is a deliberate plan aimed at creating sustainable development in the state.

“The N10 billion is still intact as it has not yet been accessed. The loan is meant for specific infrastructural development projects. Once the Due Process Office is through with the approval process of hiring contractors for the earmarked projects, we will start accessing the loan to fund these projects.

“Our administration will continue to be transparent and accountable to our people about how public funds are utilized in the state. We will ensure our people get value for any project that we execute, and also ensure that infrastructural development projects are tied to our economy.”
