Delta State Police Command has arrested four bankers for their alleged roles in a robbery between Otulu and Ubulu-Okiti on the Benin-Onitsha Expressway.
A policeman was shot dead in the incident.
The suspects work for a commercial bank.
In a statement, police spokesman Andrew Aniamaka alleged that the suspects included a female cash management officer, a chief security officer and two drivers.
He said they were arrested after investigation showed that they illegally engaged seven policemen to convey N25 million from a branch in Agbor, Ika South, to Asaba, without using an armoured vehicle, as required by law.
The statement reads: “The cash management officer of a bank, a chief security officer and two drivers were arrested by Delta State Police Command, following a robbery, which occurred on September 5 between Otulu and Ubulu-Okiti, on Asaba/Benin Expressway.
“Their arrest followed investigation into the attack, which showed, in a bid to ‘cut corners’, the officials illegally picked seven police officers from locations yet to be determined and engaged them in an illegal escort for conveyance of N25 million from a branch in Agbor to Asaba without using a serviceable, secure armoured bullion van, as required by law.”
The command said banks requiring escort must adhere to regulations on specie escort, especially during the “ember” months.
