Commercial banks, business centres and other outfits in Umuahia, the Abia State capital, abruptly closed down as gunmen attacked the city.
The gunmen reportedly robbed someone on Aba Road.
About three residents had gunshot injuries and were admitted at the Federal Medical Centre, it was said.
A source said the hoodlums being pursued by a police patrol van from Aba Road made a detour to Ibiam Road after running into a gridlock around the popular FMC Junction.

The robbers, who rode in a Corolla SUV, hit a Toyota Camry car driven by a woman and started shooting in the air to scare away people.
The incident happened yesterday where many commercial banks are located in Umuahia, forcing them and other offices to shut down.
It was learnt that security in the capital city has been strengthened with several patrol vans deployed in strategic locations.
A student nurse and a hawker were hit by stray bullets, it was said.
An AK47 and a red Corolla car were recovered from the scene of the incident.
