From the nine boxers representing Nigeria at the ongoing 2022 Commonwealth Games in Birmingham, national coach Tony Konyegwachie believes the team has the capacity to amass medals in the event.

From the two bronze medals won at the 2018 edition in Gold Coast, Australia, the coach is sure that the team can improve its medals hauls in Birmingham.

“We are here to pick medals, not a medal because last time in Gold Coast, we managed to win two bronze medals but this time around, we will be going for the highest medals which will exceed the last edition,” he said.

“All our boxers are fit, and they are ready to enter the ring so all things being equal, we will not leave this place without medals. I can assure you of this,” Konyegwachie added.

The women will start Nigeria’s medal chase in the boxing event as Bolanle Shogbamu will slug it out in the round of 16 of 66kg-70kg (Light Middle) against England’s Jodie Wilkinson.

Also today, 2019 African Games silver medalist Abdul-Afeez Osoba will start his medal campaign in round of 32 when he takes on Bahama’s Carl Hield in 67kg-71kg (light middleweight).
