Carpenter arraigned for fraud

A 37-year-old carpenter, Damilare Olaniyi, was on Monday arraigned before an Abeokuta Magistrates’ Court sitting in Isabo over a N628,000 fraud.

The defendant, whose address was not provided, is standing trial on a two-count charge of fraud and stealing.

The Prosecuting Officer, Insp. Sunday Eigbejiale, told court that the defendant committed the offences at Ibara, Abeokuta.

Eigbejiale said Olaniyi had obtained N628, 000 from the complainant, Mr. Ajewole Babatope, to construct mini-poultry cages, knowing same to be false.

He said the defendant converted the money to his personal use without completing the job.

Eigbejiale said the complainant was a fresh graduate and an entrepreneur, who had obtained loan from a bank to start a poultry business.

The prosecutor said the alleged offences contravened Section 419 and Section 390(a) of the Criminal Code of Laws Ogun State, 2006.

The defendant, however, pleaded not guilty to the charges.

The Magistrate, Mrs. Oriyomi Sofowora, granted the defendant bail in the sum of N250, 000 with two sureties in like sum.

She adjourned the matter till April 18 for trial.
