A MAN, Mr Adedeji Badejo, has narrated how his house roof was removed when he was at work by carpenters on the orders of his landlady.
Badejo, who got the shocking news from his wife that two carpenters were removing his apartment’s roof, reported the matter at Area ‘C’ Police Station in Surulere, where two policemen followed him to his 10, Adeniji Street, Surulere, Lagos.
The two carpenters –Aregbe Adeboye and Lateef Muse – were arrested.
The carpenters said they were directed by an engineer, who they identified as Tunde, to remove the roof of the two bedroom apartment.
Adeboye said they were told to remove the roof of the house and replace it with new ones.
He said the work will last for three days, adding that they are to be paid N4,000 daily. He said he had known the engineer for a long time and had done several jobs for him.
The carpenter added that one Mr Ope, a son of the third wife of the late landlord, gave them the go ahead to remove the roofs when they got to the house.
“When we got to the house and saw that all the doors to the apartment we were to remove the roof was locked, we saw one man and he told us to go ahead with our job”, he said.
In a phone call conversation, Tunde said he got the contract from a woman identified as Mrs Bickersteth. She is the junior sister of Mr Badejo’s landlady, Mrs Priscilla Konu.
He did not show up at the station, claiming that he was waiting for the person who gave him the job to accompany him to the station.
Mrs Konu, in a phone chat, said she was unaware of the incident and that she has no hand in the matter.
She assured Badejo that his belongings will be safe.
The Police officer, who attended to the case, accused Tunde of sending carpenters to remove Badejo’s apartment’s roof without a prior notice.
Badejo told The Nation that his bathroom was vandalised in the process.
“There has being communication between me and my landlady on when I will move out of the apartment and I intend to vacate the apartment before the year runs out. I had no issues with her. I wonder why the demolition is starting now,” he said.
Badejo demanded that his apartment be fixed and that justice be done over the matter, saying “Mrs Bickersteth is not my landlady, she has no right over my apartment.”
