Disruption of APC campaign in Orumba raises concern

Members and supporters of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Umunze, Orumba South Local Government Area of Anambra State, have expressed concern over the destruction of their campaign canopies and posters by suspected hoodlums believed to be supporters of the ruling All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA).

While the Orumba South Local Government Chairman, Shedrack Azubuike, denied that the incident was politically motivated, APC leaders in the area described it as a sign of desperation by the ruling party.

It was gathered that although the destruction of APC posters and banners had been ongoing for some time, the tearing down of campaign canopies occurred on Wednesday morning. Orumba North and Orumba South are known strongholds of the APC in the state.

Sources told The Nation that the action, allegedly carried out by APGA youths at Ugwuaro Primary School field, was done on the orders of the local government chairman. The APC governorship candidate, Prince Nicholas Ukachukwu, and his running mate, Senator Uche Ekwunife, were scheduled to make a campaign stop in the area as part of their mobilisation tour for the November 8 governorship election.

In his response, however, the council chairman said the setting up of canopies and chairs at the school field contravened an earlier directive issued by the council.

According to Azubuike, the directive—issued in August 2025—prohibited political parties, religious bodies, and social organisations from holding events within public or private school premises during official school hours.

He explained: “The noise from rallies or crusades disrupts learning activities. The APC did not obtain written clearance from my office to hold their rally there.”

Azubuike made available a circular dated August 14, referenced OSLG/ADM, and titled “Restriction on Political, Religious, and Social Gatherings in Schools During School Hours.”

The circular, signed by him and copied to all school heads in the area, stated that: “Any individual, group, or organisation wishing to hold a programme or event within school premises must obtain prior written clearance from the Office of the Mayor, Orumba South Local Government Council.”

It further directed school authorities to ensure strict compliance or face administrative and legal sanctions.

Azubuike added, “They have no clearance permit and can hold their rally anywhere else in Orumba South, but not within a school. I am not against them.”

However, the APC campaign coordinator in Orumba South, Dr Chuka Onyema, dismissed the chairman’s explanation, insisting that the action was politically motivated.

He said, “This is pure politics. What is happening here today is politically motivated because we have seen similar cases elsewhere. In my town, Isulo, the ADC held a rally on Tuesday at a school field, and nobody stopped them. It was peaceful. Why then was the APC prevented?

“We also have information that other political parties have held rallies in different parts of Orumba South without any obstruction. Why target the APC?

“Our posters and banners in Isulo, Umunze, and Ihite have been torn down and burnt. Is it the APC members who burnt their own campaign materials?”

Ahead of the November 8 governorship election in Anambra State, the Accord Party has collapsed its political structure into that of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in support of the party’s governorship candidate, Prince Nicholas Ukachukwu.

The Accord Party described Ukachukwu as “a proven benefactor, interventionist, performer, and selfless leader who has consistently used his hard-earned resources to serve society.”

A delegation of the party, led by its Deputy National Chairman, Dike Igboekwe, pledged to work in synergy with the APC to ensure victory for Ukachukwu and his running mate, Senator Uche Ekwunife, in the forthcoming election.

The delegation, which included Accord Party leaders from all 21 local government areas of the state, met with Ukachukwu at his Osumenyi community in Nnewi South Local Government Area.

Igboekwe said the visit was to formally endorse the APC candidate and assure him of the party’s full grassroots mobilisation efforts.

In his response, Prince Nicholas Ukachukwu expressed appreciation for the endorsement and promised to work closely with Accord Party members during the campaigns and after his victory.

He assured them that they would not regret their decision to join forces with the APC.

“You have made the right choice. I assure you that your support will not be in vain. Together, we will build a better and more prosperous Anambra State,” Ukachukwu said.

Onitsha traditional monarch has not endorsed any candidate

The Obi-in-Council of Onitsha has declared that the ancient kingdom will not endorse or support any candidate in the forthcoming Anambra State governorship election scheduled for November 8, 2025.

In a statement issued by Chief Osita Anionwu, the Ike Akatakwuani Onicha, emphasised that the commercial city remains politically neutral as a community and will not be drawn into partisan alignments.

The statement clarified that while Onitsha indigenes—like all Nigerians—have the constitutional right to freely associate with and support any political party or candidate of their choice, such participation must be strictly in their individual capacities.

“Some Onitsha indigenes, including chiefs and leaders of constituent groups, have been invited to attend campaign rallies. It must be clearly understood that they do so as private citizens, not as representatives of the community,” the statement read.

Reiterating its stance on neutrality, the council stated that Onitsha’s overriding priority remains communal peace and cohesion. It stressed that all constituent groups within the kingdom are politically non-partisan but will continue to cooperate with duly elected governments at all levels.

“As Nigeria is a multi-party, plural constitutional democracy, every citizen has the inalienable right to belong to, attend rallies, and canvass for any political party of his or her choice without coercion or force. Onitsha indigenes are mindful of their constitutional rights and belong to various political parties of their own free will.

“However, for the sake of communal harmony and well-being, all Onitsha constituent groups must remain politically non-partisan, while supporting and cooperating with duly elected leadership at all levels of government.”

The council further noted that, ahead of the Anambra governorship poll, some Onitsha indigenes—including chiefs and leaders of constituent groups—have been invited to attend campaign rallies.

“It must be clearly understood that such individuals participate in these activities in their private capacity and not as representatives or leaders of their constituent groups, as they have no mandate to do so,” the council emphasised.

The Obi-in-Council urged all eligible voters in Onitsha to actively participate in the electoral process by registering and voting for candidates of their choice without fear or intimidation.

“Every Onitsha indigene and resident should freely exercise their civic rights. The Obi-in-Council stands for unity, fairness, and orderliness during the election,” the statement added.

The council also called on the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) and security agencies to ensure a peaceful, transparent, and credible election in the state.

Traders to APC candidate: we’ll vote for you

With less than two weeks to the November 8 governorship election in Anambra State, no fewer than 76 market associations in the state have signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) pledging their support for the All Progressives Congress (APC) governorship candidate, Prince Nicholas Ukachukwu, and his running mate, Senator Uche Ekwunife.

Similarly, Imo State indigenes residing in Anambra, led by a former Chairman of Ogbaru Local Government Area, Callista Nwachukwu, have also endorsed the APC duo.

The signing ceremony took place at Omasi, in Ayamelum Local Government Area, where traders and political stakeholders gathered to declare their support.

In an emotion-laden speech, Ukachukwu thanked the traders for their confidence, assuring them that his administration would fully harness the gas deposits in Ayamelum for the benefit of Anambra citizens if elected.

He said, “We will begin implementing our transformative agenda immediately after taking office, starting with restoring security, ensuring 24-hour power supply, providing scholarships, and improving the overall welfare of Ndi Anambra.”

He listed some of the challenges facing traders in the state, including multiple taxation and harassment by revenue agents (Ndi Aka-odo) under the current administration, which he said had caused hardship in the markets.

Obiora assured Ukachukwu that the traders were united in their resolve to vote for the APC ticket, confident that the duo of Ukachukwu and Ekwunife would restore dignity and prosperity to Anambra’s business community.

PVC collection: ‘Don’t trade opportunity for apathy’

The Social and Integral Development Centre (SIDEC) has urged eligible voters in Anambra State who recently registered or transferred their polling units to collect their Permanent Voter Cards (PVCs).

The call came as the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) began a five-day PVC distribution exercise across the state.

According to INEC, a total of 146,353 valid new registrants and transfer applicants were recorded in Anambra during the last Continuous Voter Registration (CVR), bringing the state’s total number of registered voters to 2,802,790 ahead of the November 8 governorship election.

In a statement, SIDEC Executive Director, Ugochi Agalaba-Ehiahuruike, described PVC collection as the first step toward shaping the kind of leadership and future citizens desire, warning against apathy.

She said, “The exercise, which commenced on Wednesday, October 22, 2025, gives new registrants and those who applied for transfers the opportunity to collect their PVCs and vote for candidates of their choice.

“The PVC is the only instrument that empowers citizens to exercise their democratic right to vote. Without it, many—especially youths, women, and persons with disabilities—risk being disenfranchised in the forthcoming election.

“To collect their PVCs, SIDEC urges all eligible voters who registered recently or transferred their polling units to visit designated INEC collection centres within their Registration Areas (RAs).

“Collecting your PVC is the first step toward shaping the leadership and future you desire. Let no one trade this opportunity for apathy or indifference.”

SIDEC reminded voters that PVC collection should be done in person, as cards will not be issued by proxy. It also advised citizens to verify that their cards contain the correct polling unit information, particularly those who requested transfers.

Through its Project IMPACT, SIDEC continues to mobilise citizens for active and peaceful participation in the electoral process while combating disinformation, voter apathy, and vote-buying in Anambra State.

The organisation reaffirmed its commitment to strengthening citizens’ voices and promoting credible, inclusive, and transparent elections through civic education and collaboration with stakeholders, including the media, civil society, and INEC.

Project IMPACT is implemented by SIDEC in partnership with Nigerian Civil Society Situation Room, with funding from the Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office (FCDO).

AAC candidate: I’ll raise minimum wage to N100,000 if elected

The African Action Congress (AAC) governorship candidate in Anambra State, Chioma Ifemeludike, has pledged to provide leadership built on clarity, courage, and practical solutions if elected in the November 8 governorship election.

Ifemeludike made the pledge during a governorship debate organised by the Creative Mind Centre for Youth and Community Development in collaboration with Active Citizens Media.

She promised to raise the minimum wage to N100,000 for civil servants and to provide grants, loans, and modern equipment to farmers to boost productivity and efficiency.
