  • The emergence of skit-makers in music industry

The emergence of skit-makers in music industry

The year 2023 witnessed a remarkable twist of events on the Nigerian music scene, as skit-makers and content creators battled professional Afrobeats artistes for the microphone. OLAITAN GANIU explores how comic stars are crossing over to the music industry.

IN recent years, the music scene has been flooded with comedians taking to singing with some of them doing real well at it. The long list includes Broda Shaggi, Nasboi, Basketmouth, EmmaOMG, Carter Efe, Kenny Blaq, Josh2Funny, Taaooma, Oluwadolarz, OGB Recent, Sydney Talker, Chigul, Twyse Ereme and others.

Whoever was responsible for the trend can not be particularly ascertained but at some point in 2023, a good number of skit-makers made an impressive transition from comedy to the world of music. While some popular artistes describe the year 2023 as a tedious year due to economic hardship affecting the creative sector, these crossover artistes are smiling to the bank and continue to earn themselves new levels of recognition in the music space.

As Afrobeats continues to reverberate around the globe, the genre continues to inspire a new generation of artistes including established entertainment practitioners who are trying their luck by hitting the music booth to showcase themselves – and by extension enjoy from the Afrobeats largesse. Some of these tummlers were billed to perform at different musical events and festivals all through the yuletide. These famous skit-makers, comedians and content creators were not performing as actors but as musicians.

One of the most fascinating things about these jokesters is their promotional approach in ensuring that their songs go viral on social media platforms. Millions upon millions of fans continue to use their sounds to create engaging videos and repost till it gets viral. Once it becomes a trend, celebrities and influencers join in the process to either support or make themselves relevant.

From Don Jazzy, to Funke Akindele, Cute Abiola, D’banj, Sabinus, Mr Macarroni, Zlatan Ibile, Mercy Aigbe, Kiekie, Kanayo O. Kanayo, Bimbo Ademoye and others, these celebrities take up viral challenges or trends to support or remain relevant to fans and industry.

With an impressive comedy skit and film catalogs, Samuel Animashaun Perry aka Broda Shaggi hopped on the singing train. Although Shaggi had shown signs of having musical talent, it wasn’t until he decided to record a single that many of his fans began taking him seriously. To launch himself as a recording act, Broda Shaggi collaborated with Fuji maestro, Pasuma, for the single, ‘Ijo Loka.’

On December 8, the high-tempo single was released alongside its dramatic video. The visual featured the finest of Nigeria’s entertainers including actress Toyin Abraham, Bimbo Ademoye, Cute Abiola and others who made cameo appearances as vixens delivering a razz and slick dance steps with their heavy make-ups and costumes in the 2 minutes 52 seconds video.

On whether he plans to switch over permanently to music, Broda Shaggi said, “I enjoy doing everything linked to arts but one should not hurriedly jump from one aspect to another because you feel you have weight.”

The two-time AMVCA winner said he finds acting easier than other crafts.

Similarly, a skit-maker and content creator Lawal Nasiru aka Nasboi created a fresh sound with his infectious single entitled, ‘Umbrella’. The single featured Afropop vocalist Wande Coal.

The single has continued to break records on the music charts and streaming platforms. It reached number six on the global top songs chart and also topped the charts in several African countries, including Nigeria, Ghana, Kenya, South Africa, and Uganda. The single also earned him his first Billboard chart appearance. On Shazam, it was the most searched-for song in Nigeria and Ghana in December. In total, ‘Umbrella’ has amassed over 20 million across all streaming platforms including Apple Music, Shazam, and iTunes.

“I’m very happy with how ‘Umbrella’ turned out,” Nasboi said. “I just wanted to make a song that would make people smile and feel good. I think music has that power to do that.”

The comic act, who started his skitmaking career by mimicking Afropop singer Davido said he delved into music for the love of it not to create another stream of revenue.

“I have always been a singer. It was my first hustle, skit-making was just to put food on the table. Next year we will go harder. The EP has been ready since a year ago. Three amazing features,” he said.

Since the release of the song, it has been an engaging year for Nasboi as he has been performing from one event to the other. He stated that he will be featuring American singer, Chris Brown on the remix of the smash single, ‘Umbrella’. It was a dream comes true when he shared the same stage with Davido at the ‘Bear With Us’ concert on December 27 in Lagos. He is billed to perform at the Bass Festival on January 6 at Sol Beach, Lagos.

    Colleagues and fans go gaga

As these comic stars continue to attain musical success, celebrities, experts and music buffs shower encomium on the skit makers-turned-artists.

A Direct Message (DM) sent to one of the skit makers, Nasboi by Innocent Idibia aka 2baba reads: “Mad verse. Yo Nasboi. Na cheat mode u dey, it’s unfair to some of your colleagues.”

Performing artist, Ọlawale Ọlọfọrọ aka Brymo described Nasboi as the best comedian to ever cross to music. “Nasboi na my favourite of anyone wey don ever cross from other entertainment sections into music…best comedian/content creator to ever cross to music… great voice, and lyrics.”

But social media commentator, Daniel Regha urged Nasboi to up his stage performance. “Happy to see you getting gigs, well-done; However, you really need to up your stage performance. Go easy on the shouting and focus on breathe control. Your vocals aren’t clear enough. Good luck by the way, and please stay safe.”

A fan of Broda Shaggi, Robert Dan applauded him for his creativity saying, “This is going to be a national anthem for ‘Owambe’ this festive period. The visual is more than enjoyable. I laughed all through at the cast, what a mad combo.”

“I love the tune, especially the concept of the music video. It is like a throwback of what Fuji music videos used to appear back then,” another fan, Suliyat Adegoke, a POS operator in Oshodi said.

Samuel Chibuzor opined that these skit-makers are as talented as the current music stars.

“Nasboi sounds like a white angel on the ‘Umbrella’ track, I hope this is not a work of auto-tune because the AI technology can make almost anyone sound like Adele. I can’t wait for his live performance,” Funke Adeyanju wrote.

But Gafar Abdullahi said the trend proved the versatility of Nigerian youth. “I love how skitmakers are showing their versatility. It is amazing. I love the faces I saw in the video too.”

Popularity, awards not synonymous with quality, says critics

Music critics and industry watchers debate the negative implications of this trend. Nigerian Canada-based music critic and Juju musician, Badejo Thompson, in a chat with The Nation, said what the industry is witnessing with skit makers crossing over to the music industry is a race to add more feathers to their caps.

Thompson described the trend as a tricky proposition.

According to him, it would be difficult for any dabbler to succeed in the music industry.

“Music is totally different from stage play or acting. You learn easily how to act by watching YouTube and you would get to master it with constant practice, but singing is a different ball game. You either have the voice or don’t.

“Don’t get me wrong, anybody can record a hit song but that does not qualify you as a professional artist. Their fans might idolise them today and shame them tomorrow if their songs are wack, so they should not be carried away with the success of one song,” he said.

For the CEO of Wolexxy Records, Wole Pedro, not everybody can have the title of ‘a jack of all trades’ because it could make some folk lose their focus. He advised artists to continue improving on their craft if they really want to remain relevant in the highly competitive music scene.

“My question is how many of these crossover artists people are hailing can remain in the industry for a decade? People might not see what I am seeing as a music executive, but the standard of the Nigerian music industry is on the decline. There are too many amateurs in this game. Forget all these international awards and brand endorsements, our artists need to learn and unlearn the basic techniques of music-making if they want to go far. For these skit-makers, they are just experimenting, they only rely on their popularity on social media, and being famous does not equal quality,” Pedro said.

A commercial music promoter, Agbaje Taofeek said young talents should be allowed to express their creativity.

According to him, they are following in the footsteps of veteran broadcaster and comedian, Gbenga Adeboye who he described as an extraordinary man.

“Gbenga was an all-rounder entertainer. He is a comedian, compere, musician, actor just to name it. Before he died, he recorded six albums between 1990 and 2003. I’m not comparing these new set of skitmakers to Gbenga because nobody can replace him but they should allow them breath,” he said.

JUST IN: Senate denies receiving rice worth N200m as palliatives

The Chairman Senate Committee on Media and Public Affairs, Adeyemi Adaramodu has denied media reports that senators received rice worth N200million from President Bola Tinubu for distribution to their constituents as palliatives during the Yuletide.

However, a Senate source confirmed the development, saying some of the rice palliatives are yet to reach senators.

The Special Assistant to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu on on Social Media, Olusegun Dada on his official X handle on Thursday, confirmed the distribution of palliative items worth N200 million to senators and palliative items worth N100 million to House of Representatives members.

He said: “After initial logistics delay, I can now confirm that Senators and members of the House of Representatives have started taking stock of the Federal Government’s palliative items for their constituents as part of efforts to ease life for all Nigerians. Each HoR member received items worth N100m while Senatorial constituencies got palliative items worth N200m.”

Although Adaramodu could not be reached by our correspendent for comment despite spirited efforts, Premium Times in a report quoted him to have debunked the insinuation by saying that neither him nor his colleagues from other states in the southwest have received any palliative items from the federal government.

He revealed that he distributed food items and money to his constituents for the celebration of Christmas and New Year but that the purchase was paid for by him and not the federal government.

He was quoted to have said: “Was it the minister that said that or the president because as for me I have not seen anything.

“If they had handed it over to us, you would see trailers loaded with food items across all constituencies in Ekiti State, Ondo and Oyo states and other states. Our people will even be happy to get the items from the federal government.

“As for me, Yemi Adaramodu, I have not received any food items from the federal government. The food I distributed to my people across my constituency was funded personally by me and that has been my tradition every year even while I was the Chief of Staff, before I got elected to the House of Representatives.

“I have read all these things on the internet too, many people are just saying a lot of things but for me, Yemi Adaramodu, I have not received any food items from the Federal Government, maybe when they give us, I will tell you.”

He insisted that it has been his tradition annually to distribute food items to his constituents since he was the Chief of Staff to the Ekiti State Government before he was elected into the House of Representatives and then the Senate.

“It is my tradition to distribute rice and money to my constituent members every year, I have done that this year independently and it is not from the federal government, I have not seen anything from the government.”

However, a source close to the Senate leadership confirmed that the allocation of rice to senators for onward distribution to their constituents is ongoing.

He however said while some may have received their, other are yet to get the consignment.

“I know that there is a provision to give Senators rice for their constituents. For instance my Senator has not received his and I believe there are many senators that have not received the rice. But am aware that something like that is going on, the source said.

Group to Aiyedatiwa: don’t sack Ondo APC exco

A socio-political group, the Ondo Elite Group, has cautioned Governor Lucky Aiyedatiwa against making any move to tamper with the political structure in the state.

It warned that such move might spell doom for the party ahead of the November governorship election in the state.

A statement signed by General Secretary of the group, Chief Yemi Oladiran, advised Governor Ayedatiwa to unite all stakeholders rather than causing division within the party.

Oladiran said tension has been gradually brewing in the Ondo APC over plans by the governor to oust and replace the party leadership in the state.

He said: “The APC primaries is coming up in the state in the next few months, and unless those behind the plot retrace their steps, APC in the state might be risking a repeat of the setbacks it suffered in Zamfara in the last general election.

“Dissolving the state executive of the party will negate the agreement givernor Lucky Ayedatiwa signed with President Bola Ahmed Tinubu during the crisis that engulf the state over the friction between late governor Rotimi Akeredolu and Ayedatiwa.

“What we are guiding against is the repeat of what happened in Zamfara and we cannot allow this to happen in Ondo state because we play the game by the rules and guided by the constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria.

“Anything we do in the party is guided by the constitution of the APC. I can assure you that Ondo will not allow a repeat of Zamfara treatment. We must go into the next election as one united family.

“No one can truncate a moving train, that is moving at a speed of development, like the one we are having in Ondo. The  understanding between the executive members of Ondo APC and government is cordial and we should go into this election as one”

“We’re proud of the leadership of the state chairman, Ade Adetimehin. He has been able to stabilise the party since he became the chairman of the party.

“Nobody changes a wining team, the present leadership has two more years to complete it’s term. They should be allowed to usher in a new governor after the November election.

“Tampering with the present leadership in the state party or the EXCO, would be counterproductive and spell doom for the party.

The Publicity Secretary of the APC in the state, Alex Kalejaye said it was  unimaginable that anyone would contemplate dissolution of the party’s  structures  in an election year.

“The executive committee of the chapter has never been in crisis nor in disagreement of whatever dimension. The Ade Adetimehin-led executive committee has rather built the chapter to an enviable and appealing state that now attracts gladiators from other political parties.

“Political observers will attest that Ondo APC executive committee is arguably one of the most organised and disciplined in the entire APC family across the country.

“The State Executive Committee is committed to clear victory for the party at the guber poll. We need the cooperation of all leaders and elders to achieve this laudable feat.”

Target of $1tn economy will be in jeopardy if security crises aren’t halted now – Tinubu

President Bola Tinubu, on Friday, January 5, charged security forces in the country to ensure a conclusive victory against the various security crises facing the nation, warning that the nation’s target of a $1 trillion economy would be in jeopardy if the situation persists.

Addressing security chiefs and heads of intelligence agencies at a Presidential Security Briefing at the State House, in Abuja, on Friday, President Tinubu said while good progress is being made with the elimination of some security threats across multiple theatres, success will ultimately be defined by a final conclusion to the multi-dimensional menace.

He said: “We have too many investments that we need to make now in soft and physical infrastructure, in social security, in MSME empowerment, and other growth enablers. We are pursuing a $1 trillion economy in the next few years, and our efforts will be undermined if we do not finally wrap up our progressive onslaught against enemies of progress. Be encouraged. The confidence of our people in your capacity is rising, and they are appreciative of the sacrifices of our men and women.

“The success you are recording is undeniable. Nigerians are seeing it, but the avoidable errors, as witnessed recently in Kaduna, are unacceptable and cannot be repeated. I am pleased that coordination between all agencies has dramatically improved over recent months, but there is no room for celebrations until we can end this; until we can bring our troops back to their own localities, and until we can free up resources for our critical economic expansion programme,” the President firmly stated.

According to a statement issued by his Special Adviser on Media and Publicity, Ajuri Ngelale, the President emphasized that the armed forces must deliver on his objective to ensure the nation achieves a sustainable production of two million barrels of crude oil per day, including condensates, within the first quarter of 2024.

“I do not play with my intelligence reports. I have multiple lines of sight. The Navy and sister branches must step up their game to achieve our aims for the benefit of all Nigerians. All malign actors will be aggressively uprooted from our midst. Those working against the national agenda from within and without will meet justice. Your task is clear. We will sustain our momentum. Failure is not an option under my leadership,” the President warned.

The President also commended the Commander of the Presidential Air fleet (PAF), the Commander of the Brigade of Guards (BoG), and his Chief Personal Security Officer (CPSO) for their dedication and commitment in the discharge of their assignments, which has earned them a promotion.

“Nigeria calls all to serve. We are the servants of the country, not the masters as you have seen. Your stewardship as leaders in your various categories is reflected in the assignments and responsibilities you have undertaken. I hope that Nigeria will continue to recognize your service to motherland,” the President concluded.

The newly promoted officers were decorated by the President who was assisted by the Chief of Air Staff, Air Marshal Hassan Bala Abubakar; the Chief of Army Staff, Lieutenant General Taoreed Abiodun Lagbaja; and the Inspector General of Police, IGP Kayode Egbetokun, respectively, in the presence of the spouses of the elevated officers.

The event was witnessed by the National Security Adviser, Mallam Nuhu Ribadu; Minister of State for Defence, Bello Matawalle; the Service Chiefs; Heads of Intelligence Agencies, as well as presidential aides.

Speaking on behalf of the officers, AVM Olayinka thanked the President for the promotion of the officers and for the privilege to be of service to the nation. He assured the Commander-in-Chief of their continued loyalty and commitment to duty.

Child marriage: Four-year-old girl’s parents, monarch, others appear before Bayelsa govt

The parents of the four-year-old girl who got ‘married’ to a 54-year-old man, Elder Akpos, last month, at Akeddei community in Sagbama local Government Area of Bayelsa state and three others have been handed a temporary reprieve by the state government through the Gender Response Initiative Team (GRIT) over the alleged child marriage.

The state government team, made up of the Chairman of GRiT, Dr. Dise Ogbise Goddy-Harry, the Bayelsa State Coordinator of the Child Protection Network, Kizito Andah, and the Bayelsa State Chairman of BANGOF, Comrade Taritei Boco, heard the submissions of the father of the minor, Elder Morris Aboma, the alleged husband, Akpos Napoleon and the paramount ruler of the community, King Moneyman Binabo.

In their separate submissions before the government team, they all insisted that the purported child marriage was a traditional practice termed ‘Koripamo’ performed in order to save little girl’s life.

They pointed out that it is a cultural practice in Akeddei community, Oyakiri clan in Sagbama LGA whereby if a girl child always falls sick, a man will be required to drop a symbolic amount in  order to save the little girl from dying.

They noted that what transpired  between the minor and Akpos was not a formal marriage but an Ijaw cultural practice.

The trio noted that whenever the traditional rite of “Koripamo” is conducted, the man who pays the “token is not required to take her as a wife neither will he  stop her from marrying any man of her choice when she is up to the age of marriage. The practice can be performed on a boy child or girl child.”

Father of the minor, Aboma, who spoke in his Ijaw language, said her daughter was always sick to the point of death, adding that according to Akeddei tradition the only way to save her life was for a man to pay a symbolic bride price and save the child’s life and that it has nothing to do with a real marriage.

On the part of minor’s purported husband, he said: “As it is now, I am regretting doing all I did just to save the child’s life as she’s no longer sick again. Such tradition has been going on but it has not been celebrated to the extent of hiring canopy, sound system and cooking of food.

“But because she said if I didn’t do what she said, she would die, I had to look for money and did it since it involves life.

As it is I am frustrated by this whole issue.”

The paramount ruler of Akeddei community, HRH Moneyman Binabo, in his submission said he heard of a ‘marriage’ in the community during the Christmas period but did not have full details until the Divisional Police Officer (DPO) of Sagbama Police Station asked him to produce those that got married in the community.

Binabo said he had to invite the parents of the little girl to get detailed information on what happened on the 27th of December and the parents told him that the little girl had been sick and that one Akpos Napoleon had to drop a symbolic amount in order to save the life of the little girl.

He further said that what happened in Akeddei community was not a formal marriage but a fulfillment of a cultural practice.

He, however, said that what surprised him was the demand of the little girl that foods be cooked, canopy and a sound system be hired to celebrate the marriage.

The paramount ruler added that the man  who pays the token on the girl is not expected to take her home to live as husband and wife nor stop the girl from marrying any other person of her choice when she is old enough to marry.

Speaking on the matter, Kizito Andah of  CPN and Taritei Boco of BANGOF said from the submissions of the parents of the little girl, the alleged husband and the paramount ruler of Akeddei community, what happened was not a formal marriage but a cultural practice known as “Koripamo”.

The duo noted that from the information gathered, the little girl had not been sexually abused as confirmed by Dr James Omietimi at the GRIT office and that the child is living a normal life with no  relationship with the 54-year-old man.

Also speaking immediately after the meeting, the chairman of GRIT, Dr. Dise Ogbise Goddy-Harry, stated that the  deliberation was frank and fruitful and promised to give further updates whenever a collective decision is taken by the state Ministry of Women Affairs, Children and  Social Development and all stakeholders.

“As I stated earlier, Bayelsa State Government is child friendly and will do anything to protect all the children of the state from any form of perceived abuse.”
