My Cotonou degree was delivered like pizza – Undercover reporter

Investigative journalist, Umar Audu, has given more information on how simple it was to obtain a certificate from Cotonou-based University in Benin Republic in less than six weeks.

Audu revealed a thriving certificate racketeering syndicate in neighbouring African nations like Benin Republic and Togo, which specializes in selling university degrees to willing buyers in Nigeria, in his investigative report titled “How Daily Nigerian reporter bagged Cotonou varsity degree in 6 weeks.”

According to him, the certificate was delivered like pizza after payment was made.

“This certificate will be delivered to you just like you ordered a pizza or something and you give them your location and it is delivered to you. That was what motivated me to conduct this investigation,” he said on Channels Television’s Morning Brief.

“We have done a similar investigation in the past in 2018, which led to the government taking certain decisions. These things keep going on despite pronouncements by the Federal Government.”

The undercover reporter obtained a transcript from the school with the real scan code of the concerned institution.

The transcript and certificate were reasonably priced and included the genuine scan code of the Ecole Superieure de Gestion et de Technologies, ESGT, Benin Republic.

The Federal Government was compelled by his inquiry to halt the assessment and accreditation of degree credentials from Togo and the Benin Republic.

According to the certificate issued, the reporter commenced his programme in 2018 and graduated on September 5, 2022. He thereafter used the fake certificate to participate in the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) scheme without being detected.

  • Speaker Abbas defends constituency projects, says they address people’s needs

Speaker Abbas defends constituency projects, says they address people’s needs

Speaker of the House of Representatives, Hon. Abbas Tajudeen has faulted criticisms against the Zonal Intervention Projects popularly called constituency projects, saying they are successfully addressing the needs of Nigerians, especially at the grassroots.

The speaker said in implementing constituency projects, members of the National Assembly identify the needs of their constituents and nominate projects within a threshold in the annual budget of the federal government which ministries, departments and agencies execute as part of their capital projects.

Speaker Abbas spoke while commissioning the Surulere Study Centre of the National Open University of Nigeria (NOUN) and 484-bed Femi Gbajabiamila Hall of Residence at the University of Lagos (UNILAG) facilitated by Gbajabiamila when he served as the Speaker of the 9th House of Representatives.

The Speaker said legislative representation and constituency projects are two critical components of a functioning democracy, especially in a representative system of government like Nigeria’s presidential democracy.

He said these specific initiatives are funded through the government budget and are intended to address the needs and improve the conditions of constituents.

Speaker Abbas also stressed that for many Nigerians, especially at the grassroots, it is through constituency projects that they see the most direct and tangible manifestation of the government and democracy.

“However, there has been a widespread and endemic misunderstanding of the purpose and essence of these legislative interventions. Constituency projects are not mere items in a budget; they are the lifelines that connect the heart of our government to the heartbeat of communities,” he said.

The Speaker explained that constituency projects offer a unique opportunity for legislators to address the specific needs and challenges of their constituents, saying “by tailoring projects to local contexts, we ensure that development is not just a concept discussed in the halls of the legislature but a reality experienced in the streets, villages, and towns across Nigeria.

“Furthermore, constituency projects best reflect participatory governance, given that local communities are involved in the decision-making process. This approach does not just build infrastructure; it builds trust, confidence, and a sense of ownership among the people.”

Saying he was personally encouraged by the many success stories that had emerged from constituency projects over the last two decades, Speaker Abbas “These success stories are not just achievements; they inspire millions of Nigerians at the grassroots level and show that the government cares about them. With greater transparency and accountability, constituency projects can be the most viable tools for developing forgotten sections of Nigeria.

“I intend to re-introduce a reviewed version of the Constituency Development Fund Bill to provide a legal framework for the management, disbursement, utilisation and accountability of funds designated for constituency projects.

“I urge all legislators and members of the House of Representatives to emulate Hon. Gbajabiamila and renew their commitment to constituency projects. We must work with integrity and purpose to bring about meaningful change for our constituents. We should remember that the true measure of our success as legislators is not just in the laws we pass but in the lives we uplift directly.”

He lauded Gbajabiamila’s efforts in securing funding and support for several projects, including schools, hospitals, and countless infrastructure developments in his Surulere 1 Federal Constituency and beyond when he served as a member of the House.

The Speaker said Nigeria must harness the potential of its youthful population, which he has described as innovative and creative.

The Speaker stressed the critical role of a knowledge-driven economy in the development of the country and the indispensable role that the legislature could play in steering the transformative journey.

He noted that in an era marked by rapid technological advancement and globalisation, the transition to a knowledge-driven economy is not just beneficial but also imperative for sustained growth and competitiveness.

“A knowledge-driven economy can better capitalise on intellectual capabilities rather than natural resources or physical inputs. It is an economy where knowledge is a key engine of growth, innovation, and job creation.

“However, the world is moving quickly from this energy source to cleaner and more sustainable sources. If we do not adapt and develop new ways of shoring up our economy, we fail to prepare for the future.

“As you are aware, the oil and gas sector currently contributes about 65% of government revenue and over 85% of total exports. As such, the global energy shift from fossil energy systems to renewable energy will adversely affect our Gross Domestic Products.

“In the face of our challenges, our youthful population is a vibrant source of innovation and creativity. We must harness this potential. This can only be done by pivoting towards policies that foster education, research, and development and encourage the application of knowledge in industrial, technological, and economic activities.”

He recalled how Gbajabiamila sponsored the Students’ Loan (Access to Higher Education), Bill, 2019, which has now become an Act of the Parliament after President Tinubu signed it into law.

“Gbajabiamila’s tireless efforts and unwavering dedication have been instrumental in attracting several projects, including this one, to his beloved constituency of Surulere. Through his advocacy and leadership, he has continuously demonstrated a profound understanding of the transformative power of education.

“The number of education-related projects executed in his twenty (20) years as a lawmaker gives credence to this assertion. Indeed, he was a pillar of wisdom, integrity, and dedication, as shown in his meteoric rise from a floor member to Minority Whip, to the Minority Leader, to the Majority Leader, and ultimately to Speaker. This is another unique record in the history of the Nigerian legislature.”

In his remarks, the Chief of Staff to the President recalled that his story started at the University of Lagos.

He said: “On this campus, I made friends who continue to play important roles in my life; I learned and acquired the education that allowed me to become a lawyer here at home and abroad. On this campus, I went from being a young man with ambitions to a young man with a plan. I remain very fond of and incredibly proud of this great institution.

“I hope that years from now, some young student here will recount how they solved one global challenge or the other or recall the moment they came upon the big idea that inspired their success in business or academia, in science, politics or industry. And in their recounting, they will say it all began here in these halls. I look forward to that day indeed.”

The speaker also commissioned an 80-bed hospital attracted to the Ikorodu area of Lagos by Hon. Babajimi Benson.

The Speaker said it was a well-known fact that several significant challenges had confronted the health sector in Nigeria.

He added that the challenges were further exposed with devastating consequences during the COVID-19 pandemic, during which Lagos was the worst hit. He also noted that prominent among the issues confronting the sector was inadequate health infrastructure, saying, “Hospitals and clinics are often overwhelmed in urban centres like Lagos due to high demand.”

Ondo 2024: Former deputy speaker declares governorship ambition

A former deputy speaker of the Ondo State House of Assembly, Mayowa Akinfolarin, has promised to focus on the informal sector if elected as governor of the Sunshine State.

Akinfolarin, who served in the House of Representatives for eight years, said Ondo state needs to be reconfigured.

Akinfolarin said he would reconfigure the developmental structure of this state to bridge the gap between the government and the people.

He said his planned focus on the informal sector was because it employed the majority of residents in the state.

The former Deputy Speaker said his desire to govern the state was to correct the wrongs of the past.

On the death of Akeredolu, Akinfolarin said the people would be unkind to the late former Governor if nothing was done to immortalize him.

He said: “We will be very unkind to Aketi if nothing is done to immortalize him. This was a man that came with good intentions, he did his best, he was not a pretender, he was a practical person and ensured not only the state but the entire southwest region was safe through the Amotekun Corps.

“I am the bridge between successive governments, having been a key part of the late Dr Olusegun Agagu’s government and that of Dr Olusegun Mimiko. I know where the gaps are and I know how to feel it in.

“I’m properly rooted in this state, so I know what it takes to govern the Ondo state and with the Renewed Hope Agenda of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, some of us think that we need to come together to move this state forward.

“Based on my experience and antecedent, I have really navigated both the economic and political terrain of Ondo State, I know what governance is, I know what can be done to give succour and hope to our people. People are no longer have confidence in what the government is doing, we need someone to energize the system, we need someone to give assurance, we need someone to let us know that this government is our government.”

Sen. Magnus Abe, former Senator representing Rivers South-East Senatorial District, said that he is returning to his former party, the All Progressives Congress (APC)to support President Bola Tinubu developmental agenda.

Abe, who was the former Governorship candidate of the Social Democratic Party (SDP) in the 2023 general elections, disclosed this on Wednesday during a stakeholder meeting held in Port Harcourt with some members of the SDP who are loyal to him.

He said that his returning to the APC would enable him work together with other well meaning Nigerians to support the administration of President Tinubu and to enable Rivers people be part of the development at the centre.

Abe stated that the responsibility of engendering peace in the party is that all members of the party regardless of their positions should be ready to work for the progress of the party.

He said that the Chairman Caretaker Committee of the party, Mr Tony Okocha, had been a member of his team when he was in APC and as the party by the National Working Committee decided he becomes the Chairman so be it.

According to Abe, we are not joining the party because of an individual, but they are in the party as the founding members of the party and grassroots supporters of President Tinubu.

“We believe that it is proper that we are in the party supporting President Tinubu’s developmental agenda.

“Everybody in the party should have learnt one thing or two as how we can make the party work, we are coming in with open minded ready to work with everybody within the party.

“We believe that everybody with sincere interest in the progress of the party should be ready to join,” Abe said.

He stressed his readiness to work with other actors in the party as long as they were ready to work with common grounds and goals.

In a reaction, the Chairman Caretaker Committee of APC in Rivers, Tony Okocha welcomed Sen. Abe to the party, saying that “what makes a party thick is not a single individual but a whole lot of people”.

According to Okocha, the beauty of politics is the more the merrier, noting that Abe was counted as the founding of APC in Rivers.

“I can say that without any fear or contradiction,  but whatever that happened is not new, we are on known part against an intransigent government or leadership of the party, but I didn’t think that the proper thing is to leave the party.

“But he may have left to pursue his visions under SDP, if he is beating for a retreat, we welcome him with our whole chest and we will work together with him.

“I  do not think that in this present day politics one head is bigger than 10, every individual from 18 years is eligible to vote, and I am not willing to sacrifice one person for 10, but if any person beating to return genuinely not to destroy the party,we accept,” Okocha said.

Tinubu will give Nigeria world-class education, healthcare, says Gbajabiamila

The Chief of Staff to the President, Femi Gbajabiamila on Wednesday, January 3, assured that President Bola Tinubu would provide Nigerians with access to world-class education and quality healthcare before the end of his administration.

Gbajabiamila said the attainment of both objectives is part of the administration’s Renewed Hope Agenda and would not only save the country but also make it “unbeatable in every sphere.”

The Chief of Staff spoke while inaugurating some of the legacy projects completed in his Surulere federal constituency during his tenure as Speaker.

He unveiled the projects alongside Speaker of the House of Representatives, Abbas Tajudeen, the Minister of State for Education, Dr. Yusuf Tanko Sununu, the Chairman, of the Senate Committee on Marine Transport, Senator Wasiu Sanni Eshinlokun, among others.

The projects are the multistorey 484-bed Femi Gbajabiamila Hall of Residence for postgraduate students at the University of Lagos, Akoka; the National Open University of Nigeria (NOUN) Surulere Campus; Bode Thomas Police Station, Surulere; Reconstructed Randle Avenue, Surulere and the Femi Gbajabiamila Mini Stadium, Surulere.

They bring to nine the projects he inaugurated since Tuesday. The others are a state-of-the-art conference centre at the Lagos State University (LASU), Ojo; an ultramodern, multi-floor 80-bed general hospital; the dualised Babs Animashaun Road and Census Bridge; and the Sam Shonibare Community Development Centre, all in Surulere.

At the NOUN, Gbajabiamila said: “Education and healthcare are the two things that can save a nation.  If we can ensure access to quality healthcare for our people and ensure that everybody who desires a good education gets it, this nation will be unbeatable in every sphere.

“These two objectives, ensuring access to world-class education and quality healthcare for all our nation’s people, are at the heart of the Renewed Hope agenda of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s administration.  And I want to reassure all of you here today that we will meet these objectives and exceed them in this administration.”

“This campus of open university will offer undergraduate and postgraduate courses in fields accredited by the National Universities Commission. This building contains lecture rooms, Laboratories, Moot Court, Seminar rooms, offices, and many other facilities.

“I have facilitated the construction of over 250 roads, renovated schools, built hospitals, facilitated Mini Stadia for community sports, provided free Wi-Fi in all public tertiary institutions in Lagos State, and empowered thousands of youth and community members.”

Tajudeen commended Gbajabiamila saying his legislative strides were unmatched.

“I don’t see any lawmaker in this generation who can do as much as Gbajabiamila. I don’t see one,” the Speaker said.

Making a case for constituency projects as a way to fast track development, Tajudeen added: “With greater transparency and accountability, constituency projects can be the most viable tools for developing forgotten sections of Nigeria.

“I intend to re-introduce a reviewed version of the Constituency Development Fund Bill to provide a legal framework for the management, disbursement, utilisation and accountability of funds designated for constituency projects.”

For Minister of State for Education, Dr. Sununu, the UNILAG and NOUN projects were another effort towards access to free quality education.

“As a ministry, we are not happy and we are dealing with it decisively. We want to assure you that the Federal Ministry of Education is in full participation and compliance with the 8 points agenda of Mr. President especially priority on focus on education.

“And on this end, we are going to tighten all the loose nuts to ensure, ours is a certificate that we can be proud to have, that can be recognised internationally and we will be able to give you what you deserve to contribute meaningfully to the development of our country’s agenda.”
