Lawyer sues Oyo govt for converting Agodi Gardens to estate

An Ibadan-based lawyer, Mr. Adeniyi Muhammed Uthman, has sued Oyo State Government for converting a large portion of Agodi Botanical Garden, Ibadan to a housing estate.

The garden, which is over 40 years old, is tucked between Mokola hill and the state secretariat, Agodi. It was originally established for flood control and preservation of nature and animals.

About nine hectares were redeveloped by the late Abiola Ajimobi administration in 2014/2015 for recreation. It was named Agodi Garden.

But the current administration under the leadership of Governor Seyi Makinde has begun a redevelopment of over 40 hectares of the natural site to a housing estate, citing the use of the reserved place as a hideout by criminals and need to provide housing for residents as the reason for the government’s decision.

Uthman, in the suit filed against the action at an Oyo State High Court, is seeking “a declaration that the Agodi gardens situate at Agodi, Ibadan, Oyo State (otherwise called Agodi Botanical gardens) as a tourist and recreational facility, forms one of the core and socio-cultural heritage of Ibadan as a city and Oyo State at large and which therefore ought to be preserved.”

He also wants “a declaration that the conversion (or purported conversion) and/or destruction of Agodi Gardens (otherwise called Agodi Botanical gardens) situate at Agodi, Ibadan, Oyo State by the defendants without regard/recourse to its socio-cultural history, heritage and value, to make way for a/its proposed Baywood Estate project la private estate development agenda) or any other purpose is inimical to the heritage and history of Ibadan and Oyo State at large, repugnant to natural justice, equity and good conscience and therefore constitutes a flagrant abuse of power.”

The lawyer is also seeking “an order of this Honourable Court that the conversion of the Agodi gardens, Ibadan, Oyo State into a housing estate (of any sort) or any other purpose inimical to the history and value of the garden as a heritage of Ibadan City and Oyo State at large, is null and void and an order of perpetual injunction restraining the defendants jointly and severally either by themselves, their servants, agents, privies or howsoever described from interfering or further interfering with, destroying or further destroying the Agodi Gardens, Ibadan, Oyo State as an heritage of Ibadan city and Oyo State at large.”

Makinde’s decision had generated a controversy among the elite, who see it as anti-environmental protection and a destruction of a historical heritage.

Their criticism followed a similar decision by the government to convert Trans Amusement Park, an expansive recreational park in Bodija, Ibadan, to a residential estate earlier last year.

But the governor has explained that the building of a housing estate in the botanical garden will not affect 75 per cent of the trees, saying it will not also affect Agodi Garden built by the Ajimobi administration.

He said the government actually planned to upgrade Agodi Garden to a world-class recreation centre.

Hearing in the suit will begin on January 19.

Listed as defendants are Oyo State Government, Attorney General and Commissioner for Justice, Commissioner for Lands, Housing and Urban Development, as well as Commissioner for Environment and Natural Resources.

Abuja residents call for improved, affordable healthcare services

Some Abuja residents have called on the Federal Government to tackle out-of-pocket health expenditure and enhance the system, emphasising the need for prompt and quality medical attention.

The residents also called for equipped health facilities, trained personnel and a robust health insurance system to ensure that every citizen has access to adequate care.

They conveyed the messages in separate interviews with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) yesterday in Abuja, as the world celebrates the new year — 2024.

A respondent, Mrs Stella Luka, a 42-year-old Teacher in Abuja, called for functional Primary Healthcare Centres in rural areas, saying the lack of services and drugs at such centres cause disproportionate burden on urban health facilities, resulting in overcrowding and longer wait times.

She urged government to expand healthcare infrastructure and bring medical services closer to underserved communities.

Mrs Adama Sule, a civil servant who said she had been battling asthma for over 13 years, wanted government to address the high cost of medical services and medications, which she said is the reason why many individuals refuse to go to hospital.

She said: “The cost of inhaler used in the treatment of asthma is now beyond the reach of many people. Many are struggling to afford even basic healthcare, let alone more specialised treatments.”

On his part, Possible Chinedu, a cleric also residing in Abuja, emphasised the importance of trained healthcare personnel.

He said: “The shortage of skilled doctors, nurses, and other healthcare professionals has been a persistent issue in the country.”

Chinedu suggested that investing in the training and retention of healthcare workers is crucial in providing quality care to the population.

Mr Issac Nosa, an Entrepreneur also living in Abuja, said disease prevention should be government’s top priority.

He added that “with high burden of infectious diseases such as malaria, tuberculosis and HIV/AIDS, there is need for effective control measures in the country in 2024.”

Nosa called for increased investment in preventive healthcare, including vaccination campaigns, public health education, and improved sanitation practices.

Maternal and child health is an area of concern for Mrs Tabitha Marcus, a retired Nurse, who said that the country has one of the highest maternal and child mortality rates in the world.

Marcus stressed the need for improved access to prenatal and postnatal care, skilled birth attendants, and emergency obstetric services.

She said that investing in maternal and child health would not only save lives but also contribute to the overall development of the country.

In addition to these key considerations, Mrs Mercy Adejo, the Founder of Women Strengthening Women in Nigeria, highlighted the importance of community engagement, health awareness campaigns, and mental health support.

Adejo said involving communities in decision-making processes, raising awareness about health issues, and addressing mental health concerns would contribute to comprehensive and responsive healthcare system in the country.

To address these challenges, Dr Solomon Chollom, a Virologist and a Public Health expert, urged government to prioritise healthcare in its policy agenda.

Chollom emphasised the need for increased funding, strategic planning, and deployment of advanced medical technologies in the new year.

“By addressing these issues, the country can work toward achieving a healthcare system that meets the needs of citizens and promotes the overall well-being of the nation,” he said.

He also appealed to politicians from the town to be united, irrespective of political party affiliation, in order to attract government attention and infrastructural projects to the town.

According to him, the community will not witness much development and progress if it does not speak with one strong voice.

In an interview, a prominent son of the community and Chairman, All Progressives Congress (APC) in Enugu State, Mr Ugochukwu Agballah, described the coronation as a dream come true for the town.

Noting that Igwe Aneke was the people’s choice, Agballah revealed that the traditional ruler was the first, in the history of Udi, to emerge unopposed as its traditional ruler.

He promised to galvanise support of other indigenes of the town to enable the traditional ruler succeed as the Okwuluoha IV of Udi ancient kingdom.

The high point of the event was the oath of office taken by Igwe Aneke, the presentation of the certificate to the Igwe’s cabinet members, and the conferment of chieftaincy titles on selected individuals.

  • ‘Why I’m running for Ebonyi South Senatorial District poll’

‘Why I’m running for Ebonyi South Senatorial District poll’

An aspirant for Ebonyi South in next month’s by-election on the platform of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Silas Onu, has said his motivation for vying for the position is to provide quality representation for the people.

He alleged that some opponents are plotting to rig the election, using security agencies to compromise electoral officials.

Onu said this in an interview with reporters in Abakaliki.

He lamented that the zone had been badly represented and he had come to offer a better alternative to the people.

Said he: “The motivation for running is service to the people. Our people have been badly represented for many years and I think our people deserve better. Representation is not about Christmas largesse.

“Every Christmas you come and give people motorcycles and bags of rice and people come and dance for you. It is beyond this. Representation is a whole package.

“The people’s interest must be advanced at the centre. There are a lot of things you can attract from the centre to your people, both from government and other interests that exist in your zone.

“There are lots of ways you can promote your people, artisans can get good promotions from the senator and even civil servants, their interests can be better protected if they have a good senator.

“Apart from all of this, there is a passion to serve my people that is deep within my heart.  I am very passionate about it.”

On zoning, Onu, a former state chairman of the PDP, said his party had never given the ticket to anybody from his Ohaozara Local Government.

He, however, noted that although zoning favoured him, he was running based on competence and not on zoning.

He hoped he would emerge victorious in the senatorial election, no matter the pedigree of candidates other parties would field.

“I am running based on competence, not based on zoning, even though Ohaozara has never had a senatorial ticket before in my party, PDP. I see the whole of Ebonyi South as my zone. I want to represent all the people of Ebonyi South.

“I am not bragging, but I will beat any candidate they bring whether from Onicha or Ohaozara. I know the work I am putting into this project. I am connecting with the people, the voters. I am not planning rigging, I am not planning to write results.

“So those thoughts should be perished, there will be real election. People will vote and vote will count in this senatorial election. This election will not be about party, it will be about competence, it will be about persons.

“I am contesting to win. It is not about money, it is about the trust I have in Ebonyi south people, they know what is good and will stand for what is good. I am not stepping down for anybody. If you know my history, you will know that once I make up my mind to do something, it is only if it is not the will of God then I will not get it.

“I don’t have political godfathers, I have always been independent and that was what created problem for me when I ran for chairman. Because those that should have been godfathers felt they can’t control me. So they came and scattered things in the congress,” Onu said.

He said his party had mapped out measures to thwart every attempt at rigging next month’s by-election.

“There will be no window for any manipulation in this election. We know what they know. We will make sure we stamp all windows of cheating out.

“That is the only hope they have, to use security to undermine INEC. And we will make sure INEC is not compromised. We will make sure the security agencies also do their work. Let the people’s will be the determining factor in the election,” he said.

Kalu appealed to youths in Abia State to work with the government and security operatives in the state to restore peace and stability for businesses to thrive.

He said: “Our message to the youth in Abia State is to stop acts that will demoralise investors. They should allow us to come home and invest. It is my hope that by the time we finish this factory—which is purely agro-allied, all cashew nuts produced in Nigeria will be exported raw. I want to produce cashew nuts that can be exported and help the country earn foreign money in order to reduce the rising rate of dollar.

“Young people should learn to stop fighting security agencies, but be friends with them. As governor, I worked closely with them and they should cooperate with the new government so that we can have peace in the state and other parts of the country.

“It is only when we have peace, social growth that we can have a conducive atmosphere to live in. Let the youth give us peace so that we can employ them.”

Why I was clamouring for insurance to take care of ailing Nollywood actors – Jaiye Kuti

Popular Nollywood actress, Jaiye Kuti, has refuted claims that she mocked veteran actors who sought financial assistance on social media.

The Nation reported that in 2023, the movie star made headlines over comments about the series of Yoruba Nollywood veterans coming online to beg, stressing that they were giving the movie industry a bad name, which generated controversy at the time.

However, Jaiye Kuti, in an interview with Legit, noted that her statements were taken out of context.

She commended the veteran stars for paving the way for young movie stars in the film industry, insisting she would never ridicule or speak down on them.

According to her, she was only advocating for the need to have a purse for insurance to care for Nollywood stars during their old age.

She said: “Actually, what I was trying to achieve at the time was for our industry to have a purse for insurance. Our elders have been there; they started this job and helped lay the foundation of what many of us enjoy today, and for that reason, I would never ridicule them or speak down on them. I was only clamouring for insurance to take care of them in their old age.

BREAKING: Gunmen kidnap LG chairman in Nasarawa

The chairman of Akwanga local government area of Nasarawa state, Safiyanu Isa Andaha has been kidnapped by gunmen.

Our correspondent gathered that the council chairman was kidnapped alongside his political godfather Adamu Umar Custom at Bingo village in Akwanga on the evening of January 1.

The two political figures from Akwanga local government were traveling together in a vehicle without a driver and security personnel when assailants reportedly emerged from the bushes, abducting the victims and transporting them to an unknown location.

Confirming the incident, the special adviser to the Nasarawa governor on local government and chieftaincy affairs, Haruna Kassimu said the two politicians were abducted at about 8:30 pm on New Year’s Day.

He explained further that security agencies had responded swiftly by chasing after the gunmen who forcefully fled with the council chairman to an unknown destination.

The state police public relations officer, DSP Ramhan Nansel said the police in collaboration with other security agencies were on the trail of the kidnappers to ensure the release of the council chairman and his political godfather.

The PPRO said the police commissioner in the state, Umar Nadada had already mobilised personnel to pursue the hoodlums and ensure the safe release of the kidnapped chairman.

Speaking exclusively to our correspondent, the special adviser to the governor on political matters, Kassim Mohammad Kassim, who equally hails from Akwanga local government, condemned the barbaric act, noting that the youths should resist taking human beings for money.

Kassim said no religion allows the youths to trade human beings for money, and pray for the safety of the council chairman, he called on security agencies to ensure that the council chairman is released unhurt.

An unconfirmed report from a close aide to one of the abductees revealed that the abduction was not unconnected with the local government elections coming up later this year, noting that it was “politically motivated.”

Hon Andaha became the chairman of the council after the death of late Emmanuel Joseph Laweh who was originally elected the council chairman alongside Hon Andaha as his deputy. Still, Hon Laweh died suddenly three months after their inauguration.

Hon Andaha who has been the council chairman for over two years is planning to seek another tenure in August 2024
