  • Plateau announces seven-day mourning over attacks

Plateau announces seven-day mourning over attacks

In the wake of the attacks on Christmas Eve in several Plateau State towns that claimed the lives of over 150 people, the state administration on Monday announced a seven-day mourning period that would begin on January 1.

The announcement was delivered by Governor Caleb Mutfwang during his statewide New Year’s broadcast to the public.

Additionally, he pardoned three people whose sentences had been reduced to lesser terms and one person, Danladi Musa, who had been given a life sentence.

The governor said, “It is true that we ended the year 2023 on a sad note because of the many precious lives we lost including but not limited to over 400 between April and June, 2023 as well as the over 160 in the recent Christmas genocide.

“From small eruptions of conflict sometime in 2001, no one could have imagined that our dear state would witness such unquantifiable bloodshed of innocent lives, some known and others unknown. It is quite grievous to  my heart that Plateau State has today become the cynosure of the whole nation and indeed the world for the wrong reasons.

“These unprovoked and simultaneous attacks in different villages were clearly premeditated and coordinated. These series of attacks on our people are a clear case of criminality, insurgency and terrorism and must be seen and handled in that manner if we must succeed in halting this wanton destruction of lives and property.”

The Nation reports that on Sunday, December 24, 2023, gunmen raided the villages of Ndun, Ngyong, Murfet, Makundary, Tamiso, Chiang, Tahore, Gawarba, Dares, Meyenga, Darwat, and Butura Kampani villages in the Barkin Ladi, Mangu and Bokkos areas of the state, burning houses and shooting residents.

Mutfwang expressed his sympathies to the Plateau’s residents for these murders, particularly to the impacted areas and the surviving family members.

He added, “My heart goes out to you and be assured that my family, the entire government and I deeply share in your grief. We will not rest on our oars but will tirelessly collaborate with the Federal Government to bring an end to these tragedies and bring succour to affected persons and communities.

“As a mark of honour for the memory of the deceased, I wish to declare a week of mourning from January 1to January 8, 2024.

“During this period of mourning, flags will fly at half-mast. I urge all citizens to use these days for intense prayers to seek the intervention of the Almighty God in defending our territories and against wicked men that have risen against us.

“I wish to plead with our Muslim clerics to dedicate Friday, January 5, 2024 and our Christian clergy to use Sunday January 7, 2024 as special prayer days for lasting peace to return to the Plateau. Monday 8th January, 2024 will be observed as our official state day of mourning.”

The governor emphasized that in spite of these assaults, the people’s morale remained unbroken and they were determined to protect and flourish in their country.

In the face of these hardships, he expressed confidence that 2024 will showcase their inner strength and fortitude.

First Lady welcomes first 2024 baby in Abuja

First Lady Oluremi Tinubu has charged expectant mothers on prioritizing their health and seek to know their HIV/AIDS status.

She said this will enable them prevent mother-to-child transmission of the disease and help themselves stay healthy.

According to a statement issued by her spokesperson, Busola Kukoyi, the First Lady was speaking at the National Hospital, Abuja, where she welcomed the first baby of the year 2024 in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT).

She appealed to well-meaning Nigerians to join forces with government to adopt hospitals and wards to improve the healthcare delivery in the country as government alone cannot do it.

“I urge nursing mothers to take adequate care of their babies, ensure that they are immunized as and when due, practice exclusive breastfeeding and provide them with adequate nutritious and healthy weaning food for their brain development.

“Expectant mothers should always take antenatal and postnatal care seriously, maintain basic hygiene at home, space their births, register their babies with the National Population Commission (NPC) and make efforts to enroll them in school at the appropriate age”, she advised.

The First Lady noted that her pet-project, the Renewed Hope Initiative (RHI), is working in collaboration with the UNICEF to see that all births in Nigeria are registered in order to ensure the rights and protection of all children.

After visiting the baby boy, Boluwatife Johnson, the First Lady visited other babies just born in the hospital, bearing gifts and came across a set of conjoined twins.

  • Food supply, security our main focus in 2024 – Tinubu

Food supply, security our main focus in 2024 – Tinubu

The Federal Government is to expand efforts toward a massive food supply to feed the nation in 2024, President Bola Tinubu said on Monday in a nationwide broadcast.

Tinubu added that the provision of land for the production of staple crops across the country would receive a boost in the year.

Tinubu, in his New Year message delivered in Lagos, said that this was part of efforts by his administration to ensure that all citizens feel the direct impact of government on their lives.

“To ensure constant food supply, security and affordability, we will step up our plan to cultivate 500,000 hectares of farmlands across the country to grow maize, rice, wheat, millet and other staple crops.

“We launched the dry season farming with 120,000 hectares of land in Jigawa State last November under our National Wheat Development Programme.

“The programme aims to enable farmers to produce sufficient certified seeds, aligning with the nation’s target of cultivating between 200,000 to 250,000 hectares of wheat under the National Agricultural Growth Scheme and Agro-pocket project.

“Federal Government will support about 150,000 to 250,000 farmers with 50 per cent input subsidy to cultivate between 200,000 to 250,000 hectares with an expected yield of 1,250,000 tonnes of wheat.

“The task of building a better nation and making sure we have a Nigerian society that cares for all her citizens is the reason I ran to become your President. It was the core of my Renewed Hope campaign message on the basis of which you voted me as President.

“Everything I have done in office, every decision I have taken and every trip I have undertaken outside the shores of our land, since I assumed office on 29 May 2023, have been done in the best interest of our country.

“In this new year, we will race against time to ensure all the fiscal and tax policies reforms we need to put in place are codified and simplified to ensure the business environment does not destroy value.

“On every foreign trip I have embarked on, my message to investors and other business people has been the same: Nigeria is ready and open for business,’’ he said.

Tinubu also said that the provision of a steady electricity supply would receive a boost with the initiatives put in place to realise this, adding that the presidential initiative on power supply has been accelerated with his foreign engagement in Germany.

“Just this past December during COP28 in Dubai, the German Chancellor, Olaf Scholz, and I agreed and committed to a new deal to speed up the delivery of the Siemens Energy power project that will ultimately deliver reliable supply of electricity to our homes and businesses under the Presidential Power Initiative which began in 2018.

“Other power installation projects to strengthen the reliability of our transmission lines and optimise the integrity of our National grid are ongoing across the country.

“My administration recognises that no meaningful economic transformation can happen without steady electricity supply.

“In 2024, we are moving a step further in our quest to restart local refining of petroleum products with Port Harcourt Refinery and the Dangote Refinery, which shall fully come on stream.’’

The president called on Nigerians to support the government to succeed in its laudable policies and programmes.

“The current difficulties are necessary for a better future; Nigeria will be better for it,” he said.(NAN)

  • I’ll justify the trust Nigerians place on me – Tinubu

I’ll justify the trust Nigerians place on me – Tinubu

President Bola Tinubu says he will continue to work toward a better Nigeria to justify the trust placed on him by electing him into office in February 2023.

The President, who stated this in a New Year message on Monday in Lagos, said that justifying that trust had been his burden in all his policies and programs within and outside the country, since he assumed office on May 29, 2023.

“It was a year you, the gracious people of this blessed nation, entrusted your faith in me with a clear mandate to make our country better, to revamp our economy, restore security within our borders and revitalise our floundering industrial sector.

“I am also expected to boost agricultural production, increase national productivity and set our country on an irreversible path towards national greatness that we and future generations will forever be proud of.

“The task of building a better nation and making sure we have a Nigerian society that cares for all her citizens is the reason I ran to become your President. It was the core of my Renewed Hope campaign message on the basis of which you voted me as President.

“Everything I have done in office, every decision I have taken and every trip I have undertaken outside the shores of our land since I assumed office on 29 May 2023, have been done in the best interest of our country.

“Over the past seven months of our administration, I have taken some difficult and yet necessary decisions to save our country from fiscal catastrophe.

“One of those decisions was the removal of fuel subsidy which had become an unsustainable financial burden on our country for more than four decades.

“Another was the removal of the chokehold of few people on our foreign exchange system that benefited only the rich and the most powerful among us.

“Without doubt, these two decisions brought some discomfort to individuals, families and businesses.’’

The president said he was aware of the various complains by Nigerians on the recent reforms introduced by the administration, adding that those are necessary sacrifices every Nigeria must bear for a better future.

“From the boardrooms at Broad Street in Lagos to the main-streets of Kano and Nembe Creeks in Bayelsa, I hear the groans of Nigerians who work hard every day to provide for themselves and their families.

“I am not oblivious to the expressed and sometimes unexpressed frustrations of my fellow citizens. I know for a fact that some of our compatriots are even asking if this is how our administration wants to renew their hope.

“Dear Compatriots, take this from me: the time may be rough and tough, but our spirit must remain unbowed because tough times never last.

“We are made for this period, never to flinch, never to falter. The socio-economic challenges of today should energise and rekindle our love and faith in the promise of Nigeria.

“Our current circumstances should make us resolve to work better for the good of our beloved nation. Our situation should make us resolve that in 2024, each and every one of us will commit to be a better citizen,’’ Tinubu said.

Things will get hotter before cooling – Adeboye

Pastor Enoch Adeboye, the General Overseer of The Redeemed Christian Church of God (RCCG), has advised Nigerians not to hold out hope for an immediate end to the country’s current suffering.

He said this while delivering prophecies for the year 2024 at the Church’s Cross Over Service held at the Church’s new auditorium in Simawa Ogun state.

The General Overseer said: “Everything God is saying is centred around that little sentence; The wind is blowing, include in your prayers that the wind will blow you good.

“As far as Nigeria is concerned my beloved children, things will get worse before they get better. Things will get a little hotter before it will cool down.

“Because the wind is blowing, some serious secrets will come to the open. The elders have a saying that ‘when the wind blown the anus of the chicken will be exposed.”
