Start petty trade with Tinubu’s grant, Minister urges beneficiaries in Cross River

Minister of Humanitarian Affairs and Poverty Alleviation Dr Betta Edu has pleaded with beneficiaries of the Renewed Hope financial grants approved by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu to invest in profitable economic ventures.

Addressing the less-privileged individuals in Cross River State on Monday, the Minister stated that the monies are not given to them for drinks or debauchery but to start a petty trade or boost their existing petty trade and make better profits to sustain their families.

“These monies can be used to start up little businesses. You can use these grants to boost your trade, and that will help with sustainability. These grants are deliberate acts by the federal government to pull people out of poverty,” she stressed.

Cross River, Lagos, Kogi, Imo, Akwa Ibom, others, etc have benefitted and Nigerians have reacted by thanking the President for the Yuletide gesture, saying that the money will go a long way in providing  sustainable livelihood for their households this period.

Over 5,000 vulnerable, very poor persons and even People  With Disabilities, PWDs in Cross River state received N20,000 grant each from the Ministry of Humanitarian Affairs.

This is coming on the heels of other packages provided by the President to provide relief for Nigerians during this period. It will be recalled that over 3.5 million households in Nigeria have already received the Renewed Hope conditional cash transfer, with another 4.5 million being enrolled and banked presently at various villages and communities across the country even through the season.

“These households are to be paid within two weeks. Furthermore, the payment of the backlog for NPower Beneficiaries is ongoing with one month of payment for almost 400,000 beneficiaries already completed this Yuletide season,” she assured.

The event, which was the first of its kind in the State, got the beneficiaries extremely excited, especially the physically challenged persons, who were part of the Christmas celebrations event in Calabar.

Speaking at the event at the Millennium Park, Calabar, the state capital,  the Minister said the one-off grant was part of President Ahmed Bola Tinubu’s determination to lift vulnerable Nigerians from the abysses of poverty across the country.

“Here in Cross River, we are flagging off the grant for vulnerable groups in Cross River. So far, we’ve been able to reach 5,000 very poor and vulnerable persons at the grassroots in this state with plans to expand in the coming year. “

“We have checked and confirmed that these people are very poor and they deserve to benefit from the scheme in line with President Tinubu’s commitment to lifting millions of Nigerians out of poverty in 2024 through the various social protection programs,” the Minister said.

She urged the beneficiaries to invest the grants into profitable economic ventures.

Edu assured that qualified Cross Riverians will be beneficiaries of the federal government’s social intervention programs being implemented through her ministry and agencies within the sector.

Governor Bassey Otu, who flagged off the event and presented the Dummy Cheque to beneficiaries with the wife,Reverend Mrs Eyoanwan Bassey Otu commended President Tinubu for championing the cause of the poor and prioritising the welfare of the citizens.

The Cross River Governor, who said the state under his watch has been pushing a people-first government said he has given palliatives like never before in the history of Cross River, implored the beneficiaries to put the grants into proper use.

Otu said the “Grants for the Vulnerable” Program will undoubtedly make a significant impact on the lives of countless individuals in Cross River State

“On behalf of the people of Cross River State, I want to extend my heartfelt gratitude to His Excellency, the President of this great Nation, Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu, for truly making a difference in peoples lives daily and championing this cause of prioritizing the welfare of our citizens, it is easy to know a transparent government that means well for its people,” he said.

I would like to extend my appreciation to my amiable Honourable Minister, Federal Ministry of Humanitarian Affairs and Poverty Alleviation, Dr Betta Edu, for her tireless efforts in coordinating the implementation of this program in our state and across the nation. We are proud of her hard work and dedication to duty.

“Your collective efforts have inspired hope and brought much-needed relief to those who need it most, especially in a time like this. I implore you the beneficiaries to put to good use the grant given to you so that in no distant time, we can all begin to live better lives, “Rev. Mrs Otu said.

Lemo, a former deputy governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria, was directed to appear at the Department of Force Intelligence in Abuja on Thursday, December 28 where he would be questioned over the UBN acquisition.

The TTB chairman was also instructed to come along with the promoters of the bank, Messrs Cornelius Vink and Mr Rahul Savara, to meet with the team of special Investigators.

The Nation gathered that Lemo was invited in a letter dated December 24, 2023, and signed by the head of operations, office of the special investigator.

The special investigator had in his report alleged that some persons were used as proxies by a former CBN Governor, Godwin Emefiele, to set up Titan Trust Bank and acquire Union Bank.

Obazee, who was appointed special investigator in July 2023, submitted his final report tagged, ‘Report of the Special Investigation on CBN and Related Entities (Chargeable offences) to the Presidency on December 20, 2023.

In two separate reports on the acquisition of UBN and Keystone Bank submitted to President Bola Tinubu last Wednesday, the Special Investigator also alleged that Emefiele used proxies to acquire Keystone Bank without evidence of payment, the Special Investigator, DCP Eloho Okpoziakpo.

However, Lemo insisted that the establishment of TTBand the subsequent acquisition of Union Bank were transparent and duly verified by the relevant regulatory bodies.

In furtherance of the investigation into the UBN deal, and in response to Lemo’s defence, the investigator in the letter titled, ‘RE: CBN investigation activities: Invitation for a follow-up meeting with the Special Investigator,’ took the TTB chairman to task on his defence.

The letter read in part: ‘’Please, refer to your discussion with the Special Investigator earlier today regarding the offensive defence that your good self issued in PUNCH newspapers, on behalf of TTB which you chair, as well as the email you sent to the Special Investigator today wherein you tried to provide clarification on your reaction to the report on TTB.

‘’The defence seems contrary to the statements, made under caution, by the persons connected with these transactions, including your good self, before the Special Investigator at the Department of State Service in August 2023.

‘’In the said newspapers, you referred to both Cornelius Vink and Rahul Savara as “prominent global entrepreneurs and having thriving businesses in Nigeria…”

‘’In your email as well as your earlier discussion with the Special Investigator, you suggested that both of them be invited to provide clarification on their share ownership and given seven days to make such clarification; failure which they will forfeit their shares to the Federal Government of Nigeria.

‘’We are surprised at your request with regard to these two shareholders. They were given this opportunity via a letter to them dated 28th August 2023 (copy attached as Appendix 1).

‘’Instead of honouring the invitation and providing the requested documents, we received a letter from the Company Secretary of Union Bank, Somuyiwa Sonubi, dated 1st September 2023, informing the Special Investigator that Mr. Cornelius Vink was out of the country on medical grounds and that both “Messrs Vink and Savara will be available for the meeting as soon as they are in Nigeria which will be soon” (copy attached as Appendix 2).

‘’Up until this offensive defence that you put in the public domain, the Special Investigator has neither heard from them nor received the requested documents.”

    • Special investigator invites ex-CBN deputy governor, others

The dust over the probe of Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) is yet to settle.

Titan Trust Bank Chairman, Mr. Babatunde Lemo, and two others have been invited by the Special Investigator on CBN, Mr. Jim Osayande Obazee.

The other invited shareholders are Mr. Cornelius Vink and Mr. Raul Savara.

Lemo, who was CBN deputy governor between 2004 and 2014, is expected to appear with the shareholders for further grilling on Thursday.

It was learnt that the big stick might be wielded should those invited fail to honour the invitation to enable the investigator to unravel other details on the $ 500 million acquisition of Union Bank by Titan Trust Bank (TTB).

A conglomerate, the Tropical General Investment Group (TGI), on Sunday, said the USD500 million capital used to pay for the transaction was transparent and unimpeachable.

TGI insisted that it is the majority owner of TTB and Union Banks.

Obazee and his team of crack detectives alleged that their findings proved otherwise.

In a report to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, the Investigator alleged that the two banks were owned and bought by the proxies of the former CBN Governor, Mr. Godwin Emefiele, who has denied the claim.

But attempts by the investigators to interact with the Chairman of TGI, Vink, since August have not succeeded.

TGI said Vink, who has been in Nigeria since 1978, is an elderly person and has recently been medically advised to limit his movement.

The Special Investigator insisted that since TGI assured his team that the two shareholders would “soon” honour the invitation, it was time for them to come for interaction.

In a December 24 letter, the Special Investigator asked Lemo and the two others to appear before his team on Thursday.

The letter, titled: RE: CBN INVESTIGATION ACTIVITIES INVITATION FOR A FOLLOW-UP MEETING WITH THE SPECIAL INVESTIGATOR, said Obazee has not heard from the two shareholders or received the requested documents from them.

The letter was signed by the Head of Operations, Office of the Special Investigator, Eloho Okpoziakpo, a deputy commissioner of police (DCP).

The letter, which was addressed to Lemo, reads in part: “Please refer to your discussion with the Special Investigator earlier today regarding the offensive defence that your good self-issued in Punch newspapers, on behalf of TTB which you chair, as well as the email you sent to the Special Investigator today wherein you tried to provide clarification on your reaction to the report on TTB.

“The defence seems contrary to the statements, made under caution, by the persons connected with these transactions, including your good self, before the Special Investigator at the Department of State Service (DSS) in August.

“In the said newspapers, you referred to both Cornelius Vink and Rahul Savara as ‘prominent global entrepreneurs and having thriving businesses in Nigeria.’

“In your email as well as your earlier discussion with the Special Investigator, you suggested that both of them be invited to provide clarification on their share ownership and given seven days to make such clarification; failure which they will forfeit their shares to the Federal Government of Nigeria.

“We are surprised at your request with regard to these two shareholders. They were given this opportunity via a letter to them dated 28th August 2023.

“Instead of honouring the invitation and providing the requested documents, we received a letter from the Company Secretary of Union Bank, Somuyiwa Sonubi, dated 15 September 2023, informing the Special Investigator that Mr. Cornelius Vink was out of the country on medical grounds and that both ‘Messrs Vink and Savara will be available for the meeting as soon as they are in Nigeria which will be soon’.

“Up until this offensive defence that you put in the public domain, the Special Investigator has neither heard from them nor received the requested documents.”

Obazee said he and his team have decided to give a timeline for Lemo and others to come for interaction.

The letter added: “Accordingly, you are hereby invited to come along with Messrs Cornelius Vink and Mr. Rahul Savara to meet with the team of Special Investigators by 2pm on 28th December 2023 without fail or excuse.

“Please inform them to come along with all the documents /information requested from them by the letter to Mr. Cornelius Vink dated 28th August 2023.

“You will also be required to make additional statements to your earlier statement on that day.”

The Special Investigator said if Vink and Savara refused to honour the committee’s investigation, they may forfeit their shares in the Titan Trust Bank and Union Bank.

The letter said: “Kindly note that if Messrs Cornelius Vink and Rahul Savara refuse to attend this meeting and provide/defend the requested documents /information, it will be construed that they have decided to forfeit the purported shareholdings in TTB and Union Bank of Nigeria, irrespective of which vehicle that they are using to own the purported shares.

“Should you also refuse to attend the meeting to provide additional statement to your earlier statement made in August 2023, it will be construed that you misled the Nigerian public with your reaction in The Punch Newspapers today which has gained wide publicity in both electronic and print media.

“This invitation is to further ensure that it is beyond reasonable doubt that the Federal Government of Nigeria has given you a fair hearing.”

Earlier in a 28th August 2023 letter to Vink and the Managing Directors of Titan Trust Bank and the Union Bank, the Special Investigator made a seven-point demand from them.

In the letter, signed by Dr.Ojogbe Rueben U, some of these requests included the documentation on the licensing of Titan Trust Bank, minutes of Board meetings and foreign exchange dealings transacted with the CBN.

The August letter read in part: “The Federal Government of Nigeria is currently investigating some activities of the CBN and Related Entities as well as some key Government Business Entities (GBEs).

“The investigation is led by a ‘Special Investigator’ appointed by the President, Federal Republic of Nigeria. They have since commenced the assignment.

“You are to come along with Mr. Rahul Savara (in person) along with the requested documents to the National Headquarters of the Department of State Services (DSS) in Abuja by 4pm on Friday, 1st September 2023 for interaction in connection with this investigation. Accept the assurances of the utmost regards of the Special Investigator.”

The Investigator also showed that he gave the Union Bank of Nigeria ample time to prevail on Vink to appear before it.

He said although the bank complained of a “short notice period,” it said “Messrs. Vink and Savara will be available for the meeting as soon as they are in Nigeria.”

The bank’s response was contained in a September 1st, 2023 letter to the Special Investigator by the Company Secretary of the Union Bank of Nigeria, Mr. Somuyiwa Sonubi.

It said due to Vink’s medical condition, he was unable to make the appointment as proposed.

The letter was titled “CBN INVESTIGATION ACTIVITIES: INVITATION FOR A MEETING WITH THE SPECIA INVESTIGATOR.”

The letter said: “We write in response to your letter dated 28″ August 2023 on the above subject matter and to submit the documents/information requested in printed and electronic formats for ease of your review and analysis.

“Furthermore, and with all due respect to your office, we wish to inform you that Mr. Cornelius Vink is currently out of the country on medical grounds.

“Given the short notice period in the said letter and Mr. Vink’s medical condition, he is unable to make the appointment as proposed and craves your indulgence in this regard.

“Please find attached copies of Mr. Vink’s medical report for your kind review. Messrs. Vink and Savara will be available for the meeting as soon as they are in Nigeria which we hope will be soon.

“Mr. Vink sends his sincere apologies in this regard, whilst assuring you of his commitment to support your mandate. Please accept the assurances of our highest regards.”

  • Lagos agripreneurship as model for women and youth empowerment

Lagos agripreneurship as model for women and youth empowerment

Despite Nigeria’s agricultural potential, the country lags at 109th out of 125 countries on the 2023 Global Hunger Index, grappling with an army of unemployed youths and pervasive food insecurity. In response, Lagos charts a transformative course with the Lagos Agripreneurship Programme, a beacon of hope for the country. In this special report, Associate Editor ADEKUNLE YUSUF delves into the programme’s multifaceted approach, from government investments to youth empowerment, and its potential to reshape Nigeria’s agricultural landscape for sustained growth and prosperity.

Despite Nigeria’s considerable agricultural potential, it is disheartening to note that thcountry ranks 109th out of 125 countries in the 2023 Global Hunger Index. The streets in many parts of the country are teeming with beggars, and there is a pervasive sense of restlessness among an army of unemployed youths. In the face of these challenges and the persistent issue of food security, it becomes imperative to heed Alex Haley’s timeless advice: “Find the Good and Praise it.” Urgently, there is a need to encourage individuals, especially political and corporate leaders, to amplify their efforts in uplifting our society.

In this context, it is noteworthy to applaud the commendable strides being made in agricultural productivity that have given rise to a new generation of vibrant agro-entrepreneurs in Lagos State. The recent exponential growth in government investments in the agricultural sector has led to its inclusion in the State Development Agenda.

The state government firmly believes that a decisive strategy to combat poverty in the country involves active engagement in agriculture, thereby transforming the nation into a proficient producer of social, environmental, and economic wealth. Leveraging its coastal geography, the emphasis naturally gravitates towards the development of aquaculture.

In line with his role as a social engineer, Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu’s conviction regarding the imperative to involve the youth as potential agents of change for themselves and their communities led to the inception of the “Lagos Agripreneurship Programme (L.A.P).” This programme stands as a testament to the commitment of the government in channeling the energy and potential of the youth towards sustainable agricultural practices, ultimately contributing to the socio-economic advancement of the state.

Leveraging its immense potential for innovation and meaningful participation in the agricultural sector, Lagos is actively exploring the “Lagos Agripreneurship Programme (L.A.P)” as a catalyst. This initiative aims to ignite the interest of the youth segment within the state’s population in food production activities. The programme strategically addresses challenges that hinder the full engagement of women and youth in agriculture, seeking to create an environment conducive to their active involvement.

Initiated by the administration of Sanwo-Olu in 2019, the Lagos Agripreneurship Programme (L.A.P.) is conceived as a social intervention endeavour. Its primary objective is to empower women and youth in agriculture through training, employing modern agricultural techniques and practices. The programme stands as a testament to the administration’s commitment to harnessing the potential of the younger generation for the advancement of agriculture and the overall prosperity of Lagos.

The Lagos Agripreneurship Programme (L.A.P.) draws inspiration from Israel’s Arava International Centre for Agriculture Training (AICAT) programme, embodying the core principle of learning by doing. This innovative initiative combines practical training on an advanced and modern farm, theoretical studies, and communal living, offering participants a distinctive and immersive experience throughout the four-month training period. The programme unfolds in two phases: a one-month on-site training at the Lagos State Agricultural Training Institute (ATI) in Araga, Epe. During this phase, participants receive comprehensive training in Poultry, Aquaculture, Vegetable Value Chains, E-Agric, and Agribusiness. The state government generously covers participants’ accommodation, meals, training materials, and safety kits. Subsequently, the programme transitions into a three-month internship and mentorship phase, where participants engage with select agro-allied companies and farms. Since its inception in 2019, the programme has successfully trained a total of 3,000 participants. This accomplishment underscores its effectiveness in providing practical knowledge and skills to aspiring agripreneurs, contributing to the growth and sustainability of the agricultural sector in Lagos State.

As a crowning achievement of the agricultural policy, performance evaluations mark the conclusion of the training phase, assessing participants across all value chains to gauge comprehension and incentivize hard work. The Ministry of Agriculture has further enhanced the programme by introducing a reward system, recognizing top-performing participants for grant support and granting them the opportunity to utilise the ministry’s production facilities at the Lagos Food Production Centre, Badagry, and the Agricultural Training Institute, Araga, Epe, as agribusiness incubation parks. Additionally, the Ministry’s Extension Agents provide extension and technical support services to ensure the sustainability of the projects.

Under the Sanwo-Olu administration, this program serves as a powerful tool for job creation, transforming previously unemployed youth into employers of labour. The focus on youth is strategic, acknowledging their significant representation among the unemployed and their potential as a large, untapped workforce. Beyond being a positive narrative, the programme unfolds as a meaningful and sustainable initiative, laying the foundation for long-term economic and social benefits.

The programme not only provides a livelihood for the youth but also serves as a pathway for them to achieve their life goals. In fact, the current government has tirelessly generated numerous job opportunities. For those interested in seizing these opportunities, Lagosians between the ages of 18-35 for males and 18-40 for females still have the chance to enroll in the one-month intensive agricultural training. The enrollment process is accessible at www.lagosagric.com, offering a gateway for individuals to acquire valuable skills and contribute to the growth of the agricultural sector while building a sustainable future for themselves.

The objective of the Lagos State Ministry of Agriculture is to elevate the Agricultural Training Institute in Araga, Epe, into a pre-eminent regional scientific research and development center. This transformation aims to foster collaborative partnerships with the private sector, development partners, and nations, working collectively to advance sustainable practices in crop cultivation and animal husbandry. The envisioned centre will play a pivotal role in imparting critical knowledge to the regional farming community, elevating product quality, and unlocking new markets.

The envisioned development of the Agricultural Training Institute in Araga, Epe, as a leading regional scientific research and development center holds the promise of enhancing the quality of training provided to participants. It not only signifies an elevation in the educational landscape but also opens avenues for student exchange programmes.

In essence, the Lagos Agripreneurship Programme emerges as a pivotal catalyst, offering a viable path for unlocking the vast potential within the agricultural sector. It stands as a model that could be replicated on a national scale, presenting a pragmatic solution to reversing the trends of food insecurity and unemployment, particularly among the significant youth population in the country. The programme showcases a strategic approach that, if adopted comprehensively, has the potential to reshape the agricultural narrative and contribute significantly to the socio-economic development of the country.

  • The American town named Santa Claus

The American town named Santa Claus

Santa Claus is the other name for Father Christmas. However, a whole town is named after Santa himself in Indiana, United States. The town boasts of an award-winning theme park, historical sites and more. United States Bureau Chief OLUKOREDE YISHAU writes about how the town changed its name from Santa Fe to Santa Claus and other interesting details.

Melissa Arnold, the executive director of the Spencer County Visitors Bureau, and  Patricia Koch, the founder of the Santa Claus Museum, live in an interesting town named Santa Claus. It is in Indiana, United States. In the town,  it is Christmas all the time, especially during the holiday season.

In the town, there is a Santa Claus Christmas celebration in the first three weekends of December for families. Children  write letters to Santa and it has a tradition of answering these letters sent from all over the world to Santa Claus.

Arnold and  Koch, at a briefing organised by the Foreign Press Centre, said the town offers rich experiences to visitors.

Ms. Koch, who is called the matriarch of the town, said: “My father was Santa Claus from 1930 until 1984, and so I inherited a great love for Santa and a belief in Santa that still lives today and try to follow in his footsteps of bringing joy to children, specifically now – it used to be in Holiday World for many years, and everybody knows that’s a place of great fun and joy for children.”

She continued: “ I founded the Santa Claus Museum and Village, and did that because there’s so much history here.  There’s so much history about how the post office was named, how the town was named, who were the first inhabitants, how did the letter-writing start, what’s the story behind all of these things.  And I knew that I had lived through them and thought that it was really an obligation for me to try to retain those in some way.

“So, I did do a book called Santa’s Daughter, which has a great deal of history in it, plus getting the original post office building on our grounds from 1856 and the original Protestant church from 1880.  And then there’s a wonderful 22-foot – it is not granite, it is a concrete statue of Santa Claus that is from 1935.  So we have those three buildings to see, or items, and then we have a museum of documents and stories and pictures of the history of the town and the post office and Santa Claus himself in a Santa Claus outfit and a train station and different things.  A really fun place to visit because it’s outside; people can walk around.  Children can go up and visit the statue and roll down the hill in the grass, and I love it because it’s just really very wholesome.”

Answering Santa’s letters Ms Koch said the biggest thing she does is to help Santa answer all the letters that children write.

“We receive many, many, many, many, many thousands of letters that come to this town, Santa Claus, Indiana, and we spend many hours answering every one that we can answer – as we can possibly answer – and with many wonderful volunteers.  At this moment I have three volunteers over there.  We are – we – the letters would not get to the children, so we’re being very specific about answering those that are close.  But it is a labour of love for us to do that, and we have answered currently 21,000 letters, and the postage and everything about that is free.  Nobody pays a penny for anything.  And if you have a chance to talk about us, please ask parents to check their letters and make sure that we have an address.  Santa knows where the children are, but the elves don’t always know.  So we do need an address,” she said.

The town also welcomes international students. It has a programme in its high school of having students from all over the world. It recently had at least eight students from Spain, Germany, and  Norway helping answer letters.

    How it became Santa Claus

Koch said the town was originally Santa Fee.  “My wonderful grandmother, Apollonia Shew always called it Santa Fee, and I thought that’s what it was.  We have the document in our museum that shows very definitely that in 1856, the postmaster from Fulda, Indiana, made an application to what on the document says Washington City, January 8th, 1856, to get a post office in the town of Santa Fee.  And that “Santa Fee” is up in the left-hand corner. Somebody wrote somehow, ‘Choose another name than Santa Fe.’  I don’t know if they didn’t see the other E or just decided to not pay attention to it.  But there was already a Santa Claus post – there was a Santa Fe post office in Indiana, so they said, you can’t have that name.  But that’s – we were Santa Fee.

“But at any rate, somebody wrote “Santa Claus” with a black ink pen with – Santa Claus, and then somebody wrote through that, and then somebody wrote something that looks like “Seedlick” – of course, we wouldn’t be here if we were Seedlick – and then above all of that somebody wrote “Santa Clause” with an E.  That person changed our history forever.  We have no idea who wrote that.

“But the magic of all that is that it happened January 8th, 1856.  And the postmaster who made the application, his name was Nicholaus Fisher.  So Nicholaus himself asked that this town be given a post office name of Santa Claus, which I think is magic.  So that’s how the town came to be.”

    How letter writing started

She explained that the letter writing started in 1914, but there is no documentation of that at all.

“We do have documentation from 1930 on, when my father returned from World War I and saw that the postmaster was very busy with children’s letters and all the mail that was coming in.  And he had been Santa Claus on his first ship when he was a 19-year-old sailor in Brooklyn Navy Yard and they were looking for somebody to be Santa Claus for a children’s party.  And another sailor said, there’s a guy in the engine room that says he’s from Santa Claus, Indiana, so maybe he’ll do it.  He did that that day, and he made the vow that if he lived through the war, he would be Santa Claus.

“So when he returned to his native place, he began being Santa Claus, immediately visited the postmaster and saw how busy he was, and he organized the letter writing somewhat in that he took the letters out in big boxes to the local high school, to the two monasteries we have in the area, to American Legion and Veterans of Foreign Wars clubs, and just had them answer letters.  It was kind of a just, hey, neighborhood, let’s all help do this.

“That continued on.  I started when I was about 12 years old and we would – he would bring letters home and we would answer them at home.  And then in 1984, a group of us formed the group called Santa’s Elves, Incorporated, which made us more – we were more organised.  We still did it in our homes, but we had certain times when people could do it.  We started having some form letters to help because it becomes an almost – you cannot write a letter to 21,000 people and have everybody do it correctly.  And so it became more organized in the ’80s.  I started when I was 12 years old, which was a long time ago, and then went away for 10 years to nurse, and then came back.  So I restarted in the ’60s and at that point took over the legacy of my father, who passed away in ’84.  I was Santa’s helper for 54 years.

“So it is a family legacy.  Now we do it in the back room of the original post office building with many, many, many wonderful volunteers.  The volunteers sign up online now so we know how many people are coming, and we can organize it.  We have training, because it has to be done properly.  We really respect these children.  We’re just so happy that they believe, and we feel that it’s our obligation to get a letter back to them.  And so we have a little training to make sure that they do it properly.  And we do have four form letters, but each letter is customized with the children’s name, and at the bottom of the letter there is a personal note and a message to the child that pertains to what they wrote.  So if they say, “I’ve been trying hard in school,” Santa says, “Keep up the good work in school.”  If they say, “I had a fight with my sister this morning,” “Please try to stop fighting with your sister.”  We try to say something that they mention in the letter so they know Santa read the letter.

“So it is a labor of love, and we have many volunteers who spend a great deal of time.  We start officially the Monday after Thanksgiving, but my family always starts before that.  And by the way, we get international letters, and there were 600 letters sent to Chinese – communist Chinese before Thanksgiving so that they would get them by Christmas.  We get them from all over the world.  And everything, as I said, is free, and given by donation,” Koch said.

Arnold added that some years they answer as many as 35,000.  “So it varies greatly from year to year, but it definitely shows that kids are writing, and still are writing letters and sending them in the mail, which we think is incredible,” she said.

She said she has been really impressed this year with how many children have offered in their letters to share a couple of their gifts with children who don’t have.

“ I’m amazed at how many children are saying that, which gives me hope.  I think that’s wonderful, worrying about the homeless and children who don’t have as much as we have.  I think that’s really great, and I’m happy to see that.

“I think – we will get the letters if they’re mailed to us.  My – I make a plea every year.  If you’re in Nigeria or wherever, mail them early, because right now we are, like, what, two days – that the Post Office Department – I’m sorry – it’s very slow because we have so – such a huge volume of mail.  And on Saturday, it’s just a half day, and Sunday, no day – they’re closed.  So we have to get these letters out.  And if we don’t get them early, it’s very difficult to get them to the children on time.

“And especially schools – I didn’t even mention how many schools use this as a learning project to teach their children how to write a letter, which is wonderful, and we will get packets of 30, 50 letters from children.  And we have to get all those answered, and it takes a great deal of time to do that, and so we need it early when we have volunteers.  Of course, these volunteers are people who live here.  They also want to be with their families.  They want to be traveling.  They want to be baking, cooking, having parties.  And so right now we’re in crunch time because it’s so close to Christmas – so early, early, early with everything,” Arnold said.

     Other towns with similar name

Koch said there are other Christmassy town names.  “There is a Santa Claus, Arizona.  I’m not sure about Georgia.  I think it might be a neighborhood, but our claim to fame is that we are the only town with Santa’s name in the post office.  So we have the only Santa Claus post office in the world,” she said.

Let’s maintain spirit of hope, Ganduje urges Nigerians

Nigerians, especially Christians, got a piece of advice yesterday from the National Chairman of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Dr. Abdullahi Umar Ganduje. They should keep hope alive under the President Bola Ahmed Tinubu administration.

He said with hope, the people can ignite progress and determination to build a better future.

This advice was contained in Ganduje’s goodwill message to mark this year’s Christmas celebration through his Chief Press Secretary, Edwin Olofu.

The party chair said the nation’s strength lies in the unwavering optimism and the resilience of its citizens, stressing that “together, we can achieve this greatness.”

Highlighting the essence of the celebration, he noted that the season is a time to reflect on the love and blessings bestowed upon Christians by Christ’s birth.

Ganduje urged Nigerians to embrace the virtues of the spirit of hope, sacrifice, peace and joy that defined the lifestyle of Jesus.

The chairman urged every Christian to, in the spirit of unity and togetherness; cherish the love they have for one another and to extend acts of kindness and compassion to the less fortunate.

The statement reads: “Let us use this season of goodwill to build bridges, mend relationships, and promote harmony within our communities.

“As we celebrate Christmas let us remember the power of unity, love, and sacrifice. Let us forge ahead into the New Year, armed with renewed hope, determination and a commitment to building a Nigeria we all can be proud of.

“It is my fervent prayer that this festive season brings us closer to our dreams and aspirations and may the coming year be a testament to our collective resolve to build a stronger, more prosperous Nigeria.”

Ganduje urged Nigerians to remain resolute in their unwavering commitment to the growth and progress of the country.

“Nigeria is blessed with tremendous potential, and we firmly believe that with collective efforts and dedication, we can overcome all the challenges that come our way,” he said.

The party chair expressed confidence in Tinubu’s leadership, insisting that his administration has demonstrated a steadfast commitment to the development and upliftment of Nigeria and Nigerians.

    • Unite Nigerians, end insecurity, Kukah urges Tinubu

Senate President Godswill Akpabio, Catholic Bishop of Sokoto Diocese Mathew Kukah and Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN) President Daniel Okoh yesterday joined other political leaders and clerics in praying for peace in the country and success of the Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s administration.

The trio also enjoined Nigerians to love one another and believe that the nation’s economic and security challenges would be surmounted.

Their prayers and encouragements were contained in their separate Christmas messages to Nigerians, especially Christians yesterday.

Akpabio, at a Christmas day service by the Cathedral of Unity, Methodist Church Nigeria, Abuja, said with prayers for Tinubu’s success, “tangible dividends of democracy” would be delivered to Nigerians.

He said: “Today is a special day in Christendom when God gave the greatest gift, his only begotten son to mankind. He is born today in order to redeem mankind. And that birth is what we are celebrating today.

“As we celebrate this season I urge you all to offer your prayers and support for our President Tinubu. I want to thank the Arch Bishop for also praying for the President. Most of the problems you are seeing today in Nigeria were not caused by President Tinubu.

“When people write all sorts in social media, I always say are they aware that this man has just assumed office as the President, but a lot of miracles are being expected from him because people remember how well he performed as the Governor of Lagos State from 1999 to 2007. And today Lagos is one of the largest economies in West Africa.

“For me under President Tinubu I envision a future that which Nigeria is secured and people can sleep with their two eyes closed. I envision a future in which our children will have gainful employment. I envision a future in which Nigeria will be respected in the international community.

“I envision Nigeria that foreign direct investment will come in and many companies which had shut down will reopen for production and boost the economy. Nigeria shall be great again under President Tinubu. We need to pray for him and be patient,” he said.

Methodist Archbishop of Abuja, Archbishop  Michael Olusegun Akinwale in his homily urged the church to pray for the leaders and support them.

He also prayed for  Tinubu and  Akpabio to lead Nigeria to become a peaceful and prosperous nation.

Kukah to Tinubu: use your experience to unite Nigerians, end insecurity

In Sokoto, Bishop Kukah called on the President to use his wealth of experience to unite Nigerians and to end insecurity.

He also told Tinubu to take a second look at the palliatives given to some Nigerians as such would not resolve Nigeria’s problems.

Describing  the nation’s woes   as “deep and structural,” the Bishop said now was the time to  end the ugly “instrumentalisation of religious, ethnic or regional identities.”

His message tagged ‘Time to Reclaim Nigeria’s Greatness,’ touched on unity, nation-building, insecurity and politics, among others.

Kukah also appealed to Nigerians to continue to have faith in the country and be hopeful.

His words: “Now, the government must devise strategies for achieving reconciliation, which has eluded us. Our injuries are not invisible. Many national conferences have been held to chart a way forward. The trove of grievances and hopes is there, and all the government needs to do is to dust them up. No need to reinvent the wheel or attempt some new diagnosis.

“Mr. President, Sir, congratulations and a happy Christmas. Now, you have what you prayed for, what you dreamt of, what you longed for. For the better part of over 20 years, you planned to be our President. For years, you campaigned for a new Nigeria through restructuring or overhauling the defective machinery of the Nigerian state.

“For years, you fought the military and other forms of dictatorships. For years, you fought for the victims of a deep state. For years, you sought to create an egalitarian society. For years, you sought a just society. For years, you have built networks with individuals, communities, and institutions. Now is harvest time.

“You are in the driving seat now. Under your watch, Nigeria must turn the corner. Under your watch, we must end the ugly instrumentalisation of religious, ethnic, or regional identities.

“You have had enough time to think of the answers to the many questions that are crying for answers. Your future and that of our country is in your hands.

”Mr President, you have no excuses before God or the people of Nigeria. Neither God nor history will forgive you if you fail. This is our moment, our date with history. Now, all eyes and ears are on you. Our prayers for a united country are with you.

“We have seen the first faltering steps of policy decisions, which have elicited a mixture of controversy, anxiety, and praise. This is to be expected. You have promised us a Renewed Hope Agenda, but know that hope has worn thin in our dear nation.

“Nigerians have almost lost hope in the fact that a government can really and truly care for them. Nigerians have lost hope in the fact that our politicians will put our interests first and find a way to deal with the cancer of corruption. We had lost hope in being united again, given the seeds of division that had been sown. Ignite our hope again, Sir.

“We now have seen some renewed hope in your effort to run an inclusive government. We want an end to partisanship. The problems of Nigeria are deep-seated, and they are based on a culture of corruption that has become the foundation stone of governance. This evil structure has to be dismantled.

“Palliatives will not resolve Nigeria’s problems. The problems are deep and structural. Please do not be afraid to reset the template of power, regardless of the cultural or historical myths. We are tired of promises and stories. We want evidence we can see and touch.

“Mr. President, the killings of Nigerians by whatever name must end and end now. These senseless killings, abductions, extortions, and kidnappings have to end, and the sacredness and sanctity of human life must be restored. Blasphemy laws have no place in a democracy. We are not in a theocracy.

“Those who take life by whatever means must be fished out and punished. A culture of compensation to victims must be institutionalised and states must take full responsibility while criminals or those who hide them are fished out. We cannot go on this way. The seeds of hatred that have sprouted in Gaza show us the consequences of allowing a culture of distorted narratives to grow among us.

”You must rid the public service of criminals who have turned the opportunity to serve into an ignoble enterprise. We concede that millions of decent men and women genuinely wish to serve but are crushed by the deadweight of corrupt ogas at the top who use corruption as their oxygen! This surgery must happen if you are to succeed in any of your dreams of delivering much-needed services to our we must always strive to seek what unites and binds us together rather than what divides us.

“In this context, reconciliation signifies more than the absence of conflict; it signifies the presence of genuine love, respect, and acceptance for one another.

“As we celebrate the birth of Jesus Christ, we are reminded of the transformative power of forgiveness, compassion, and empathy. This season presents us with an opportunity to reflect on our individual and collective actions, seek forgiveness where necessary, and extend a hand of reconciliation to those we may have wronged or who have wronged us.

“Let us emulate the example set by Jesus Christ and strive to cultivate a culture of forgiveness and understanding in our communities and nation at large.

“As Nigerians, we are faced with numerous challenges, but we must not lose hope. Instead, we must use this season to renew our commitment to building a better Nigeria for future generations. Let us work towards fostering an environment where every Nigerian can thrive, where justice and equity prevail, and where peace and prosperity abound.

“Though we may be experiencing economic hardship, let us not forget those who are on the margins of society. We must share our resources with them and give them a sense of belonging, as Christ would do. Let us strive to build a nation where peace, justice, and unity prevail. May the joy and blessings of Christmas be with you all.”

Investors’ return hits N12.4tr in Yuletide trading

Investors in Nigerian equities netted N894 billion in the days ahead of the holidays to push their returns this year to N12.4 trillion.

As preparations for the Yuletide got underway, investors also intensified bargain-hunting in what suggested that beyond the foods and frills, many Nigerians were focused on possible returns from the stock market.

Benchmark indices indicated an average year-to-date return of 44.43 per cent, implying that investors have earned N12.4 trillion in net capital gains this year.

The market had closed with a weekly gain of 2.26 per cent, equivalent to net capital gains of N894 billion.

With the inflation rate at N28.2 per cent, the rally in the stock market further strengthened the outlook for Nigerian equities as one of the world’s best-performing markets and the best inflation-hedging asset class in the country.

Nigerian equities ranked among the three world’s best-performing markets with the market surpassing a historical record of N40 trillion capitalisation during the week.

The All Share Index (ASI) – the common value-based index that tracks all share prices at the Nigerian Exchange (NGX) – closed weekend at 74,023.27 points as against its opening index of 72,389.23 points.

It opened in 2023 at 51,251.06 points. ASI had opened 2022 at 42,716.44 points.

The aggregate market value of all quoted equities also rose from the week’s opening value of N39.613 trillion to close at N40.507 trillion. It opened 2023 at N27.915 trillion, compared with N22.297 trillion recorded as its opening value for 2022.

Managing Director, Arthur Steven Asset Management Limited, Mr. Olatunde Amolegbe, said investors were reacting to the positive outlook for the economy.

“Firstly, the stock market is a forward-pricing market, meaning that it tends to adjust for consequences of policy ahead of their impact being felt on the ground.

“So, while the populace is feeling the immediate negative impact of various policies, the market is betting that the result of those same policies will be positive for the economy in the medium to long term, which is why we are seeing the bullish sentiments we have witnessed so far.

“We must also recognise that the market can correct sharply if this does not turn out to be the case.

“Secondly, we must also recognise that increasing inflation rate and the impending banking recapitalisation programme are empirically positive in terms of accretion to the stock market even if the main street may perceive them as negative in the meantime,” Amolegbe, a former president of Chartered Institute of Stockbrokers (CIS), said.

Market analysts had said the N40 trillion mark was a psychologically important historical point for the market, referencing the tendency for a pullback that had stalled previous rallies from crossing such a threshold.

Afrinvest Securities said the N40 trillion mark was “a historical high”, underlining the general opinion among market pundits.

Managing Director of HighCap Securities, Mr. David Adonri, said the N40 trillion mark was a “remarkable record”, noting that “the market capitalisation of equities on the NGX has never crossed the N40 trillion” mark.

Futureview Group stated that the market was at an “all-time high” at N40.164 trillion.

Analysts at SCM Capital said they expected that the positive sentiment will continue in the equities market in the remaining days of 2023.

“The financial services sector is anticipated to maintain market liquidity, while fundamentally strong industrial goods stocks are projected to experience positive sentiments,” SCM Capital stated.

A breakdown indicated that investors in several sectors have earned between 60 and 125 per cent return in capital gains so far this year, underscoring the unique position of equities as the only positive inflation-hedging asset class in the highly inflationary economy.

Nigerian equities had broken their known cycle of decline in the pre-election year to record their third consecutive positive performance in 2022, with a full-year average return of 19.98 per cent, equivalent to a net capital gain of N4.455 trillion.

The equities market closed 2021 with an average return of 6.07 per cent, equivalent to net capital gains of N1.278 trillion.

In the throes of the outbreak of the COVID-19 pandemic in 2020, it had recorded an average return of 50.03 per cent, representing net capital gains of N6.483 trillion.

Market analysts and stakeholders were unanimous that the continuing rally in the stock market was boosted by renewed optimism over the economic direction of the Bola Tinubu Administration, widely regarded as investor-friendly.

The average return in the first four months of the year was 2.25 per cent or N628.1 billion.

The overall performance of the equities market this year has largely been influenced by what the market described as a “post-inauguration rally”, referencing the positive sentiments that have trailed the pro-market reforms of the Tinubu Administration since May.

According to the NGX, the strong performance of the market and the bullish trend were due to “a combination of factors, including investor sentiment influenced by macroeconomic developments such as the formation and swearing-in of the economic cabinet by President Bola Tinubu”.

The NGX had also attributed the market performance to the “audacious macroeconomic reforms under the new administration”.

Market operators believed that “the policies of the new administration” had “led to the rise in the fortunes of investors”.

Afrinvest Securities had said “economy reform optimism” bolstered the market performance, noting that “the rally in the market followed the promise of critical reforms”.

Analysts at Arthur Steven Asset Management said the equities market’s bullish momentum was “because of the new administration which tends to affect the market positively”.

“The market reacted to the high expectation from the new administration as the government promised the investors easy repatriation of their investment and profit,” Arthur Steven Asset Management stated.

Chief Executive Officer of Crane Securities Limited, Mike Ezeh, said the emergence of Tinubu had further energised the market as participants trust his ability to rejig the economy and implement friendly policies.

He urged the new government to continue to implement policies that would provide an enabling environment for businesses to thrive, noting that this would help boost foreign direct investments (FDIs) and attract issuers to the capital market.

    • ’It’s path to stability in Rivers’

Rivers State Governor Siminalayi Fubara yesterday reiterated his commitment to the implementation of the peace deal brokered by President Bola Tinubu to halt the protracted political crisis in the Southsouth state.

The eight-point resolutions were signed in Aso Villa, Abuja by the governor, his predecessor and Minister of Federal Capital Territory (FCT),  Chief Nyesom Wike, who are leaders of the two camps locked in the war of attrition.

The peace deal was witnessed by former Governor Peter Odili, and National Security Adviser (NSA), Chairman of Rivers PDP Aaron Chukwuemeka and All Progressives Congress (APC) Caretaker Committee Chairman, Chief Tony Okocha, who also signed the agreement.

The resolutions have been trailed by protests by some Rivers elders, who have objected to the terms of agreement.

However, Fubara emphasised in his Christmas broadcast that the peace deal was not a death sentence, stressing that his concern peace.

He said: “I have said before, there is no price too much to pay for peace. And with the realization that the worst peace is better than the best war, we will strive to make peace with all segments and interest groups without surrendering our freedom or jeopardizing the interest and well-being of the good people of Rivers State who graciously entrusted us with their cherished mandate.”

Fubara said its implementation would not compromise democratic values and the collective interest of the state.

The governor explained that javing studied the terms, he “has come to the conclusion that the peace pact is not as bad as it might be portrayed by those genuinely opposed to it.”

He insisted that the peace accord “is not a death sentence ”, describing it as opportunity to achieve the stability in the state.

Fubara stressed: “As a principal participant in the entire saga, I have taken some time to study the terms therein and have come to the conclusion that the Peace Pact is not as bad as it is being portrayed by those genuinely opposed to it. It is certainly, not a death sentence. It offers some way towards a lasting peace and stability in our dear State.

”Accordingly, I reaffirm my acceptance of the Presidential Peace Proclamation and my commitment to implementing both the spirit and letters of the declaration in such a way and manner that will restore political stability to our dear State without compromising the collective interest of our people and our cherished and shared democratic values.

Fubara said both parties had so far demonstrated some goodwill towards the implementation of the agreement.

He noted that the House of Assembly, led by Speaker Martins Amaewhule, had “withdrawn the purported impeached notice”.

He said his government had also released the withheld allowance of the lawmakers.

Fubara thanked President Bola Tinubu for intervening in the political crisis, saying that his efforts underscored his love for Rivers.

The governor also thanked the people for their love and support for his administration, especially during the crisis.

He said he would  not lower the bar of governance in the state, adding that he will always consult widely to serve the people better.

The governor encouraged citizens of the state to imbibe the good virtues of Christmas by embracing selflessness, genuine love and true forgiveness.

He assured that the new year, 2024 would witness improved development with the planned completion of some strategic infrastructural projects, including a section of the Ring Road Project and the Andoni section of the Ogoni-Andoni-Opobo/Nkoro unity road which was abandoned for over 20 years.

Fubara said:“I wish to reiterate that nothing shall constrain us from our path in our commitment to provide a steady flow of the dividends of democracy in all positive ramifications to our people.

“I am proud to say that we have successfully confronted the challenges of governance and have made measurable progress in the last seven months of our administration with various laudable projects and programmes, some completed, some ongoing and others at advanced stages of completion.”

He added: ”By the grace of God, 2024 will witness a speedy transformation of our State with the completion of most of our projects and programmes, such as sections of the Port Harcourt Ring Road, the Andoni section of the Unity Road, the Ahoada-Omoku Road, the Emohua-Degema Road, etc, and the commencement of many other laudable projects, both in infrastructure and human capital development, as outlined in our 2024 budget.”
