11 popular cities that are not capitals of their countries

Popular for their beauty, landmarks, beautiful architectural buildings, and infrastructures, these cities are well known across the globe. However, they are often mistakenly assumed to be the capital cities of their respective countries.

However, many get them mistaken for their country’s capital city, which they are not.

There are 36 countries where the largest city is not the capital city. If you were surprised to learn that Istanbul is not the capital of Turkey, keep reading on to discover more about some of the world’s most popular cities and their true capital cities.

    1. Sydney, Australia

Sydney comes to mind when asked what the capital of Australia is, right? But that is not the capital. Canberra is the capital of Australia.

Sydney has more attractions eg the Sydney Opera House, Harbour Bridge, Bondi Beach, etc this alone would make one believe it is the capital city. Other popular cities in Australia that come first before its capital Canberra are Melbourne, Perth, and Brisbane.

Canberra has been Australia’s capital city since 1913. However, the national parliament was based in Melbourne, Victoria until 1927.

    2. São Paulo, Brazil

Brasilia is the capital of Brazil, but São Paulo is one of the most popular cities.

Brasilia, which houses the country’s parliament, became the capital in 1960. It is also less popular which is why most people think São Paulo or Rio de Janeiro is the capital.

While Rio takes the crown as the tourism capital, São Paulo is not only Brazil’s financial and business centre but also a key player in the global economic network.

One of the reasons Rio de Janeiro is popular aside from having landmarks like the Christ the Redeemer statue, beaches, and activities like the carnival, is that it was the former capital of Brazil from 1763 until 1960.

Although both cities are located along the southeastern coast of Brazil, Brasília is the third most populous city in Brazil and the seventh largest metropolitan area.

    3. Istanbul, Turkey

Istanbul is the most popular city in Turkey even though Ankara is the capital where the Grand National Assembly is situated.

Istanbul, once the capital of Turkey, is known as the place where the East meets the West as it’s the only city that lies between 2 continents, Europe and Asia.

Long ago Istanbul served as the capital of the Ottoman Empire and the Byzantine Empire. The city has famous attractions, including the imposing Hagia Sophia, the Blue Mosque, and one of the largest and oldest covered markets in the world – Grand Bazaar.

Ankara became its capital in 1923.

    4. Zurich, Switzerland

Bern, the fifth-largest city, is the capital of Switzerland but Zurich is the most popular city. Switzerland is one country where many cities can be mistaken as its capital. Cities like Geneva, where the headquarters of Europe’s United Nations and the Red Cross is situated, or Zürich, which is the banking and finance hub.

    5. Timbuktu, Mali

Timbuktu is a place most people think is the capital of Mali i.e. for those who even know where it is situated but Bamako is the capital of Mali.

    6. Johannesburg, South Africa

Most people think Johannesburg is the capital of South Africa which is not true. South Africa has three capital cities which are; Cape Town – the legislative capital of South Africa, Pretoria – the administrative capital and Bloemfontein – the judicial capital.

Commonly called Jo’burg, Johannesburg is the financial hub of the country with landmarks like Nelson Mandela’s former home, the Apartheid Museum, Constitution Hill, and Maboneng.

    7. Toronto, Canada

Ottawa is the capital of Canada but Toronto is the most popular city and once the capital of Canada from 1849 to 1852 and 1856–1858.

Canada’s most visited city, Toronto is the most populous city in Canada. Along with Montréal, Québec City, and Vancouver, Toronto is regarded among Canada’s major cities, but interestingly, none of them are the capital. While Toronto is a prominent centre for music, theatre, and television production, the capital is located in Ottawa.

Toronto is an international center of business, finance, arts, and culture, and is recognized as one the most multicultural and cosmopolitan cities in the world.

Ottawa’s Parliament Hill is situated next to the Ottawa River and incorporates Victorian architecture, museums, and galleries.

    8. Casablanca, Morocco

Rabat is the capital of Morocco and was inaugurated in 1912 but Casablanca is the most popular and recently Marrakesh.

Like Casablanca and Marrakech, Fez is another popular city in Morocco before its capital Rabat.

Marrakesh has become a tourist destination mainly because of its state-of-the-art roads and other attractions.

    9. Lagos, Nigeria

The port city of Lagos is Nigeria’s most popular city especially because of its commercial activities but Abuja became the country’s capital in 1991.

Lagos was the capital until 1991.

    10. Tel Aviv, Israel

Israel’s capital is not Tel Aviv as most people think but Jerusalem – an ancient city where 3 of the world’s main religions coexist.

    11. New York, United States of America

New York is the most popular city in the US and was the capital from 1785 to 1790 but Washington D.C is the capital.

Some other countries whose capital cities aren’t the largest or most popular include; La Paz, Bolivia whose capital city is called Sucre, Colombo, Sri Lanka whose capital is called Sri Jayawardenepura Kotte commonly known as Kotte, St Petersburg, Russia whose capital is Moscow, Barcelona, Spain but its actual capital is Madrid, Mumbai, India but it’s capital is New Delhi, etc.

  • UPDATED: Supreme Court affirms Mbah’s election as Enugu governor

UPDATED: Supreme Court affirms Mbah’s election as Enugu governor

The Supreme Court on Friday, December 22, affirmed the election of Peter Mbah of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) as the Governor of Enugu state.

A five-member panel of the court, presided over by Justice John Okoro, unanimously dismissed two appeals filed by the Labour Party (LP) and its candidate, Jonathan Edeoga.

Justice Mohammed Garba, in the lead judgment, held that the appellants failed to prove their case

Justice Garba resolved the five issues, identified for determination in both appeals, against the appellants.

In respect of the first appeal, marked: SC/CV/1130/2023 Justice Garba held that the tribunal and the Court of Appeal were right in holding that the written statements of some of the appellants’ witnesses, which were not filed along with the petition, were inadmissible and subsequently expunged them.

He rejected the appellants’ request to invoke its jurisdiction under Section 22 to hear and determine the case on merit, noting that the time allowed for the hearing of the petition has lapsed.

In the second issue, Justice Garba held that there was no evidence to support the appellants’ claim that Mbah was not qualified to contest the election because he presented forged National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) certificate No:

A080297 to the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) in aid of his qualification to contest the election.

He noted that the three witnesses called by the appellants on their issue were petitioners witnesses (PWs) one, two, and three, who were among those whose written statements on oath were declared inadmissible having not been filed along with the petition.

“The evidence of PW 1, 2, and 3 is where the issue of non-qualification was based. The evidence having been expunged for being legally inadmissible, there is no evidence to support that allegation of forgery of certificate

“The allegation, as contained in paragraphs 24 and 25 of the petition is not supported by valid evidence. There is no merit in this issue,” he said

In resolving issue three against the appellants, Justice Garba held that the trial tribunal appropriately evaluated, analysed and ascribed the required value to the evidence led.

He held that the appellants did not prove that the trial tribunal did not properly evaluate their evidence.

The judge noted that the appellants, who were petitioners at the tribunal, called l witnesses who they said were polling unit and collation agents, but under cross-examination, the witnesses admitted that they were not properly appointed to act in those capacities by relevant legal provisions.

He also noted that the statements of the witnesses were all the same, except for the names, adding that such evidence is not admissible and could not be ascribed any value.

“PW26 was the appellant state collation agent, he gave hearsay evidence because he was not at the ward collation centres for him to give admissible evidence of all that happened at all the ward collation centres.

“The tribunal was right to have held that the petitioner failed to prove with evidence that the second respondent (Mbah) was not elected with a majority of valid votes cast in the election.

“I have no reason to interfere with the concurrent findings of the two lower courts on the issue,” he said.

On the fourth issue, the faulted appellants claim that the Court of Appeal wrongly discountenanced their reply brief.

Justice noted that the reply brief was merely a rehash of the arguments in the appellants’ brief and therefore, the Court of Appeal acted well in refusing to act on it.

Justice Garba dismissed the appeal for lacking in merit.

He proceeded to uphold the November 10 judgment of the Court of Appeal, which earlier affirmed the decision of the trial tribunal, dismissing the petition by the LP and Edeoga.

In dismissing the second appeal, marked: SC/CV/1131/2023, Justice Garba held that the votes deducted from the votes of the PDP and added to that of LP did not substantially affect the margin of lead by the PDP and its candidate.

Respondents in both appeals were the PDP, Mbah, and INEC.

Also on the panel were Justices Helen Ogunwumiju, Tijani Abubakar, and Emmanuel Agim.

Mbah hails Supreme Court judgment, promises better performance

Governor of Enugu State, Peter Mbah, has hailed the Supreme Court verdict upholding his election in the March 18, 2023 governorship poll, saying distractions were over, as he vowed to redouble efforts in the delivery of his mandate to make the state better.

The Nation reports that the Supreme Court had affirmed the election of Peter Mbah of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) as the governor of Enugu state, dismissing the appeal of the Labour Party governorship candidate, Chijioke Edeoga.

Mbah, who spoke at the Government House Enugu, described the process of the judicial review of his mandate by the Enugu State Governorship Election Petitions Tribunal, the Court of Appeal and the Supreme Court as a huge emotional journey, physical, and spiritual investment for the people of Enugu, thanked them for their support every step of the way, promising not to disappoint them.

The governor said it was a victory for the people and a nudge to continue the development strides and pursue his vision for a greater Enugu State.

He said: “A few minutes ago, the Supreme Court, the highest court in the land, delivered the final judgement on the last tranche of appeals against the mandate you freely gave us on March 18, 2023. We thank God that the learned justices affirmed your sacred will.

“We wish to express our profound gratitude to the learned justices for keeping the wheel of justice rolling. We specifically thank them for upholding your mandate.

“This judicial journey has been a huge emotional, physical, and spiritual investment for you, the people of Enugu. First, our case was heard and examined during an exhaustive process at the Enugu State Election Petitions Tribunal, and in the end, your mandate was upheld. The appellate court seating in Lagos again upheld the previous decision via a unanimous decision. Today the Supreme Court has again upheld this victory for the people of Enugu State.

“Ndi Enugu you are the victors of this judicial journey. I salute your dogged belief in us. Your unalloyed support and prayers in every attempt to subvert your mandate can never be lost on us. We do not take them for granted. Now that these distractions are over, it is time to redouble our efforts to serve you.

“We will double down on our earlier resolve to serve you with every fibre of our being. The reward of your resolute support will come in our rededication to do things that have to do with the ordinary people of Enugu State. We will give more attention to your welfare, development, and good living.

“Let me reaffirm that you haven’t seen anything yet. We are by this judgment recommitting ourselves to the sacred pact between us. The social contract which we both signed on May 29, 2023.

“This judicial affirmation is a nudge to continue to provide water in every nook and cranny of Enugu State; to build smart schools in all the wards of our state; to sustain the provision of security; to provide massive infrastructure and roads development; to build a new set of leaders of tomorrow who will face the global challenges headlong.

“Let me use this opportunity to reassure you that all our campaign promises will be fulfilled to the letter. Hold us to account. Hold your pens firmly and stick with us as we drill down into all those electoral promises.

“As we celebrate this affirmation of your electoral mandate, please continue to spare moments of prayers for us. Beseech God on our behalf for an ultimately greater Enugu State. With your prayers and support, we will get to the Promised Land of an Enugu of our dreams.”

  • I didn’t receive N800m for prosecution of 2019 election, says ex-Kwara APC chair

I didn’t receive N800m for prosecution of 2019 election, says ex-Kwara APC chair

Former chairman of All Progressives Congress (APC) in Kwara state, Bashir Bolarinwa, has refuted claims that he had any knowledge of a sum of N800 million allegedly given to the party by the former national chairman of the APC, Adams Oshiomhole for the prosecution of the 2019 governorship election.

Senator Oshiomhole recently claimed that the party expended over N4 billion to win the Kwara, Imo, and Ogun state governorship elections in 2019.

Reacting to the allegation, Bolarinwa said: “I am saying this as the state chairman of APC that led the Otoge movement in 2019 that I am not aware of the money. Through APC’s victory in the election was one of the major achievements of the then Adams Oshiohmole-led national APC, but I was and still am not aware of any N800 million given to the party in the state.

“I am not saying that Senator Oshiohmole does not know what he is saying, but I am sure he would know the person he handed over the money to and where the money was collected.

“It is disturbing that after the electoral victory of the APC in Kwara state, most of the people who worked for the success of the party were sidelined and abandoned during the period.

“Even, all the efforts made to the national secretariat of the party under the caretaker chairman of the party under Governor Buni to enable him to intervene were rebuffed because the caretaker chairman and his cohorts had made up their mind not to support Bola Ahmed Tinubu for anything but we thank God today. It is unfortunate that the crisis created has continued to linger.”

On President Bola Tinubu’s administration, the former lawmaker urged Nigerians to bear with the administration.

He said: “I served under Tinubu when he became governor of Lagos state in 1999.

“Initially, that time too things were tough as he was trying to put things right. Later on, things picked up and became better and Lagos is still enjoying it till tomorrow. By the grace of God Nigerians will soon be laughing.”

  • Unemployment: we will upscale job creation next year, says NDE DG

Unemployment: we will upscale job creation next year, says NDE DG

The director-general of the National Directorate of Employment (NDE), Abubakar Fikpo, has said the agency has begun reviewing its plans and programmes as part of its attempts to meet new job creation targets next year.

He said the NDE was committed to the provision of innovative ideas to scale up its job employment creation models that will continue to complement the microeconomic policies of the federal government.

Fikpo said the organisation was consciously working to broaden the scope of job creation in line with the Renewed Hope Agenda of President Bola Tinubu.

The director-general said the Minister of State, Labour and Employment, Nkeiruka Onyejeocha, had given the agency a matching order to ensure the creation of more jobs for Nigerian youths.

He said: “NDE is poised to create more jobs, especially in the hinterland of the country through our various schemes such as the School-on-Wheels (SOW) scheme. The scheme will be re-engineered and equipped to provide training facilities to communities where there are inadequate or non-existent facilities for vocational skills training.

“This is to provide equitable and inclusive opportunities for jobs and self-reliance to Nigerians whether in urban, semi-urban or rural communities.”

In a statement on Friday in Abuja, Fikpo said the agency was reviewing its schemes and programmes.

According to him, serious attention is being given to all the methods of operations of the NDE.

He said: “We are fostering collaboration with other government agencies, private sector organisations, donor agencies, and philanthropists. The reality is that the government has a lot of responsibilities that involve the utilisation of money, but unfortunately, resources are very scarce.

“This is therefore why we are very serious about collaborating with all and sundry henceforth to ensure the expansion of our schemes and programmes.”

Regarding the persisting unemployment crisis in Nigeria, Fikpo said the high rate of unemployment was a function of the geometric rise in population and ignorance of available opportunities for skills acquisition and self-employment by diverse unemployment groups in Nigeria.

He added that the NDE had trained and empowered many graduates in tertiary institutions, school leavers, and dropouts through different skills acquisition schemes and programmes.

In addition, Fikpo said that NDE had assisted many with soft loans to kick-start businesses, noting that it was geared to do more in the year 2024.

According to him, in the past, many unemployed persons in the country were reluctant to key in and utilise the vast opportunities of skills acquisition programmes as alternatives to the unavailable white-collar jobs.

However, he said there had been a serious positive change.

He said: “As the year 2023 winds down, it is worthy of note that NDE has done tremendously well in its job creation programmes.

“Despite the challenge of global economic depression that equally affected government’s resources, the NDE is proud to say that it provided job opportunities to many unemployed persons and put smiles on their faces.”

Don’t lose hope, Ex-gov Emmanuel tells Nigerians

Immediate past governor of Akwa Ibom State, Udom Emmanuel, has called on Nigerians not to lose hope despite the ongoing economic challenges.

Emmanuel, who gave this counsel as the guest lecturer at the Fifth Convocation Ceremony of the Mountain Top University, Prayer City, Ogun State, said Nigerians must challenge their minds to rise above the myriads of challenges facing the world today.

He said: “The world we are living in today is characterized by very high pace and scale of volatility, uncertainty, complexity and ambiguity.

“It is important to note that no nation is immune from the challenges of this present day.

“Many are losing hope because of the enormity of the unresolved issues being faced daily. Many are filled with fear at the uncertainty of what the future holds. But hope is the one attribute we must never lose.”

The ex-governor charged students to take time out to have a vision for their lives, insisting that one must have a mental picture of what future he wants to create.

Speaking on the topic, ‘Optimizing your potentials in a challenging future, Emmanuel said: “You can hold onto a vision of what is yet to come, you can boost your chances at achieving your dreams and being successful.”

He recounted how he conceptualized the idea of a state-owned airline for Akwa Ibom State, even before he assumed office in 2015.

In addition to the Ibom airline which is presently considered one of the best in Africa, he recounted how he also followed his vision of transforming Akwa Ibom into a financial, economic, and technological hub.

Highlighting that no one can progress beyond his mindset, Emmanuel urged people to embrace a growth mindset, “accept that all you know about any particular subject matter is not all that exists and be open to engage with and accept superior information.

“Your life will ultimately be a representation of your belief system, your philosophies, and your ideology. No one can make progress beyond his mindset.”

He cautioned the youths against mediocrity, explaining that being of moderate or low quality, value, ability, or performance will take no one far.

He stated: “Become a person known for excellence. The challenge of gender, racial, ethnic, or whatever biases only count at the average quality level, when you become excellent at whatever you do, these biases become absolutely irrelevant.

“Excellence puts you above all biases. Be so good at what you do that you become almost indispensable.”

The Midstream and Downstream Gas Infrastructure Fund (MDGIF), which operates under the Nigerian Midstream and Downstream Petroleum Regulatory Authority (NMDPRA), has signed a MoU with IBILE Oil and Gas Corporation.

The purpose of this agreement is to develop infrastructure for Compressed Natural Gas (CNG).

The Minister of State for Petroleum (Gas), Hon. Ekperikpe Ekpo, addressed reporters at a signing ceremony in Abuja.

He said: “It is an important moment in the history of this ministry and today, I have witnessed the signing of a MoU between the NMDPRA with IBILE Oil and Gas Company.

“This will help them to develop the infrastructure for CNG. And of course, with the withdrawal of subsidy, the alternative means now is natural gas.

“So what they are coming in to do and the essence of this agreement or MoU is to fastrack the penetration of natural gas in the form of CNG to drive the transport sector.”

He however put a caveat to it that the parties to the pact will perfect everything, expressing optimism that it will they will not delay the project.

He said it was the importance of the agreement that compelled him to return from Port Harcourt, where he went for the event of the completion of the Port Harcourt Refinery yesterday.

He vowed to ensure that he drives the parties to keep to the schedule in the agreement because Nigerians are eager to see an alternative fuel to petrol.

The minister said: “You can see the importance of this meeting while we are having it today, I was in Port Harcourt, I had to drive in and the MD decided to stay behind.

“All the persons, the Authority Chiefs stayed behind to make sure that this thing happened today. So I want to make sure they will key into the speed we are doing it today. The importance of this event is to make sure they finish it on schedule. Nigerians are waiting for this.”

Meanwhile, MDGIF, Executive Director, Malam Mansur Kuliya, said the agreement aligned with the mandate to provide incentives for CNG.

He noted that aside from having the duty to support President Bola Tinubu’s agenda, the fund has the mandate to deepen the domestic gas market.

According to him, the agreement was an indication of similar projects that are underway.

Kuliya said: “I am very excited and this is just in line with the incentive for CNG.

“We have a duty to support Mr President’s agenda and the mandate to ensure we deepen the domestic market. This is what we are doing and more and more are to come in the near future.”

Speaking, the Ibile Oil & Gas Corporation, Managing Director, Ms Doyin Akinyanju, noted that that the firm is fully prepared to hit the ground running with the signing of the agreement.

The Chief Executive Officer said apart from reducing the cost of transportation, the agreement will culminate in the reduction of the carbon footprint.

She revealed that the Lagos State Governor is very keen that the project will commence between now and the first quarter of 2024.

She said it will take off with government-owned fleets before extending the services to commuters.

Akinyanju said: “It is for the government fleets as well as commuter buses so that the commuter buses people can actually be driving and moving around at lower cost,” she said.

“We are rolling out mobile stations so that very quickly people can drive into stations and fill up from there.”

According to her, the project will start with the target of fast-tracking gas for transport and power in Lagos State.

Popular Nollywood filmmaker, Biodun Stephen, has bemoaned the rate at which thugs and area boys exhorted her film production crew in Lagos.

Biodun narrated the incident in a video shared via Instagram, in which she added that one of her crew members was almost stabbed by the “area boys” in Lagos.

The movie director said they were accosted and extorted by some area boys after their car broke down on the road.

While recalling the incident, Biodun called on the Lagos state governor, Babajide Sanwo-Olu, and the chairman of the Lagos State branch of the National Union of Road Transport Workers, MC Oluomo to intervene and put a stop to the constant intimidation. She said:
