    • Party holds maiden Xmas Carol

Lagos State Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu yesterday urged members of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in the state to maintain what he described as the resilience of the chapter.

He also called for the sustenance of the bond of unity, love and charity, saying that these are the traits of the political family.

The governor spoke at the party’s maiden Christmas Carol of Five Lessons at its secretariat in Ogba, Ikeja.

At the event themed: “Endless thanksgiving” were Chief of Staff Tayo Ayinde, who represented the governor, wife of the governor, Dr. Ibijoke Sanwo-Olu, wife of the deputy governor, Mrs Oluremi Hamzat, Secretary to Government,  Bimbola Salu-Hundeyin, APC National Youth Leader Dayo Israel, royal fathers, top government functionaries, members of the Lagos State House of Assembly, members of the State Executive Council, and religious and ethnic leaders.

Sanwo-Olu charged Lagosians to be optimistic and committed to the growth and development of the state.

He said: “This is the maiden edition of Christmas carol organised by the party; the first of its kind.

“Mr chairman, this legacy you have set for yourself will outlive you. We cannot forget that under your watch, you have produced the first president from Lagos State.

“It is a honour to join  the chairman, executive and members of the party at this year’s Christmas carol. We have every reason to be thankful for what God has used our party to achieve at the centre, state and local government.

“As we come together in unity and love, let us remind ourselves and surround ourselves with the theme of endless thanksgiving.

“It could not have been by human power, but by the grace of God. The journey of the APC is by resilience and we should also remember the value that binds us.

“As a fellowship in the spirit of the season, let us remember our father and leader, the president of the country, Asiwaju Bola Tinubu.

“Let us continue to pray to God to continue to guide him on the path of progress and prosperity for the country. As we look back to challenges of the past, let us be grateful for the lesson learnt and our thanksgiving should not be confine to the past.

“Let us approach the coming year with optimism and commitment to growth. As we express our endless thanksgiving, let us continue to work for the growth of our state and the nation. We are in the season  of thanksgiving and praise worshiping. I will like you to join me in praising the most High God.”

The party chairman, Pastor Cornelius Ojelabi, charged members to be resolute and remain hopeful in the Lord and the ruling APC.

He said next year will bring abundant goodness of the Lord.

He said: “Today, we have come before the Lord to thank him for being alive as 2023 winds down. It is not by our might or design that we have come this far. It is the good Lord that has spared our lives.

“By the design of our creator, not all have witnessed this day. Many of them have wisdom and knowledge, but all those came to naught as they are not with us today.

“It is therefore, not by might, but by his grace. We in APC, particularly in Lagos State, appreciate the goodness and mercy of the Lord over our party in the last general election. We don’t take this victory for granted.

“We do not see the grace the Lord gave us as our making. It is only God. I welcome you to this gathering where we bid 2023 goodbye and welcome the new year 2024.

I enjoin you to feel free to share the goodness of the Lord in this coming year as we raise our voices for the goodies the year 2024 is coming with. My prayer is that we will not Labour in vain. I wish you all a wonderful season.”

The first Bible reading  was taken from the Book of Genesis 3:1-12.

Titled the fall of man, the bible verse was read by Israel.

The second Bible reading reflecting the essence of the birth of Jesus Christ was read Salu-Hundeyin, a lawyer.

The third reading from Mathew 1:18-25 was taken by Princess Orelope Adefulire, the Senior Special Adviser to the president on Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).

She was represented byAjoke Obe, vice chairman, Agbado Oke-Odo Council.

First Lady of Lagos State, Mrs Sanwo-Olu read from Luke 2:8-20.

The last and fifth reading, taken from John 1:1-14,  was taken by the former deputy governor of Lagos State, Prince Abiodun Ogunleye.

  • Senate challenges MDAs to exceed N18.3trn revenue benchmark for 2024

Senate challenges MDAs to exceed N18.3trn revenue benchmark for 2024

The Senate has called on revenue-generating agencies to exceed the revenue of N18.324 trillion target of the Federal Government for the 2024 fiscal year.

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu had last month, presented a 2024 Appropriation Bill of N27.503trillion to the joint session of the National Assembly.

The projected revenue target for the 2024 fiscal year in the Appropriation Bill is N18.324 trillion.

In assessing  the preparedness of the agencies ahead of the task, the Senate Committee on Finance chaired by Senator  Mohammed Musa had separate interactive sessions with the revenue-generating agencies last week where he told them to strive to surpass the target revenue for next year.

In one of such meetings with the Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited (NNPCL), led by its Group Chief Executive Officer (GCEO), Mele Kyari, Musa urged the oil giant to surpass their revenue target.

“It is heartwarming that based on your submission, NNPCL has within January and October this year, raked in N4.5trillion as revenue and remitted it into the federation account.

“But being a fully commercialised company now, more of such are needed, particularly in the 2024 fiscal year.

“President Bola Tinubu on his part, in the budget presented to the National Assembly, clearly demonstrated that a deficit budget of N9.18trillion should be eased out for 2024 as against N13.4trillion used for such in the outgoing 2023 fiscal year.

“This committee in particular and other relevant standing committees of both the Senate and the House of Representatives would through oversight activities and regular interface with revenue generating agencies, ensure that required revenues are generated to

aid the full implementation of the proposals and projections made for the 2024 budget,” Musa said.

The panel also interacted with agencies like the Federal Inland Revenue Service (FIRS), Nigeria Customs Service (NCS), Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria and Nigerian Ports Authority, among others.

Also at the sidelines of the colloquium to mark the 61st birthday anniversary of the President of the Senate, Godswill Akpabio last Thursday, Musa told journalists that the N100 trillion annual budget proposed by the guest speaker Olisa Agbakoba (SAN), at the event for the 2025 fiscal year was achievable.

“The suggested budget size for 2025 may look big but achievable if all the revenue-generating agencies work to block leakages in the system,” he said.

Insecurity: Uzodimma seeks Southeast governors’ collaboration

Imo State Governor Hope Uzodimma has restated the determination of his colleagues in the Southeast to stem the challenges, especially insecurity, facing the zone.

Uzodimma, however, called on all other stakeholders to work together with the governors to alleviate the sufferings of the people of the zone.

He spoke yesterday at a thanksgiving by the Minister of State, Labour and Employment, Nkeiruka Onyejiocha at Umunneochi, Abia State.

Acknowledging that the people of the zone are facing a difficult situation as a result of insecurity and high cost of living, he revealed that all governors of the zone are working hard, in collaboration with critical stakeholders, to bring the situations under control.

His words:  ”Leaders of the zone in collaboration with heads of  security agencies and community leaders are working hard to bring lasting solutions to the challenges of insurgency, kidnapping and other criminal activities in the zone.

“Politicians, irrespective of their political parties, called upon  to join hands in building the economy of the zone for the good of the people.”

Uzodimma said that Onyejiocha gave a good account of herself when she served as a federal lawmaker representing her constituency.

He called for prayers and  God’s intervention in the affairs of the country in general and the zone, in particular.

He congratulated the minister for her efforts at bringing development to her constituency and the Southeast in general. The governor also congratulated traditional rulers for their roles in maintaining peace in their communities and the clergy for their prayers.

Presiding Bishop B.L Onuagha thanked  Uzodimma for his efforts in providing leadership for the Southeast, describing him as “a great and trusted leader.”

He also thanked the National Chairman of All Progressives Congress(APC),  Abdullahi Ganduje, and others for identifying with   Onyejiocha.

Attorney-General of the Federation and Minister of Justice  Lateef Fagbemi, in his goodwill message,  acknowledged the  qualities of the minister  and described her as a woman of “value and valour.”

Fagbemi said that President Bola Tinubu was happy with the inauguration of a high court complex built by Onyejiocha for her constituency.

Also,   Ganduje appreciated Onyejiocha on her strides as a federal lawmaker and now, as a minister.

  • Why I didn’t stop Soun Ogbomoso from title, by Adeboye

Why I didn’t stop Soun Ogbomoso from title, by Adeboye

The General Overseer of the Redeemed Christian Church of God (RCCG), Pastor Enoch Adeboye, has said he did not stop Pastor Ghandi Olaoye from vying for the Soun of Ogbomoso’s stool because he had been ordained a king before he was born.

Olaoye was a senior pastor in RCCG before he was selected and approved for the Soun’s stool.

He will receive his staff of office as the 21st Soun of Ogbomoso tomorrow.

Adeboye explained his position while delivering a sermon at the interdenominational coronation service for the new monarch at Beulah Baptist Conference yesterday in Ogbomoso, Oyo State.

The cleric recalled that when Oba Olaoye came to inform him about his idea, he encouraged him because he knew that he was actually born to be a king.

The RCCG general overseer said he asked Olaoye to pray about it, stating that the then prince returned after some time that he did not hear anything from God on the matter.

According to him, he asked Olaoye to pray again because he wanted God to speak to him directly so both of them would be clear that God wanted him to be king.

Adeboye said Olaoye later came back to inform him that God had confirmed that he should join the race.

“It was then that I told him to go ahead because it had been destined. I knew that long ago, but I wanted God to speak to him directly.

“To my critics, if I had said no and God said yes, whose word is the final? God, of course. So, I cannot stop him because Pastor Ghandi was destined to be a king, even before he was born. Thank God, it is coming to fruition,” Adeboye said.

Taking his scripture from Acts 15:18, the cleric advised the monarch to embrace people, promote peace and unity among his subjects.

He then anointed Oba Olaoye and his wife, praying that his reign would be peaceful and prosperous.

In his response, Oba Olaoye described Adeboye as his spiritual role model and a father indeed.

He said: “Pastor Adeboye has been a father to me. It is an unforgivable sin if you report me to Pastor Adeboye. I don’t like people reporting me to Pastor Adeboye. We have gone to the whole world together and I have watched him closely and I see a genuine man of God.

“I am happy today that the person who laid hands on me to become a pastor is the same who anointed me when I became a king.

“To my people in Ogbomoso, let us work together. Let us develop this land and let us make this land a place where our sons and daughters will be proud of. I believe it is a new dawn for Ogbomoso.”

Fed Govt warns Southern Kaduna communities against illegal mining

The Federal Ministry of Solid Minerals Development has warned communities and other critical stakeholders in the southern part of Kaduna State on the dangers of allowing illegal mining activities in their areas.

The government gave the warning at a town hall meeting organised by the Northwest office of the ministry at Kafanchan in Jamaa Local Government Area.

During the parley, mining stakeholders in the zone agreed to ensure effective and sustainable development in the sector.

Presenting a paper at the meeting, the Acting Zonal Mines Coordinator of the Northwest Kaduna, Kutman Hosea Ali, noted that the ministry was committed to enhancing collaboration and understanding among all stakeholders by fostering an environment conducive for sustainable mining activities.

Ali noted that Southern Kaduna was an emerging mining zone, hence the need for the residents to be aware of the realities on the ground and the government’s position.

“We are here on behalf of the minister, who directed that a meeting of this nature should be held in Kaduna, and Kafanchan in particular.

“This is because Southern Kaduna is coming up as an active mining zone; it’s active in the sense that lithium, which is becoming a hot cake globally, is found predominantly here.

Read Also: Clark to CJN: correct grave anomalies in judiciary

“That is why we have come to sensitise the communities and the mining companies to their responsibilities to each other,” he said.

Also, in his paper presentation, an operative of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) from the Kaduna command, Mr. Eric Billy, reminded the stakeholders that illegal mining is an economic crime that must be reported and offenders face the law.

“People should try and get the requisite licence because there are a lot of them involved in this illegal licensing. When EFCC goes after them, they will complain of witch-hunting only for deeper investigation to reveal they are culpable,” he said.

The EFCC officer also cautioned those with the mining licence to operate within the scope of the permission given to them.

The Chief of Moroa, Mr. Tagwai Sambo, expressed delight with the town hall meeting.

He promised to always preach peace to his subjects.

Monday Barau, who spoke on behalf of mining companies in Kaduna, attributed the poor contribution of the sector to the economy to illegal mining.

He solicited the support of stakeholders to reposition the sector and maximise its potential.

Kano: No deal with NNPP to compromise Supreme Court verdict, says APC

    • Ruling party dispels rumours with opposition

The ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) yesterday dispelled rumours of having a deal with the New Nigeria People’s Party (NNPP) to influence the Supreme Court to rule in favour of Kano State Governor Abba Yusuf.

The party also debunked the existence of any deal in which President Bola Ahmed Tinubu agreed that the NNPP candidate would remain the governor and alter defection to the APC.

In a statement in Abuja, Kano State APC Chairman Abdullahi Abbas dismissed the speculation of any agreement and reconciliation between the party and the NNPP.

He described the insinuations as “mere rumours”.

Abbas said: “The rumours had it that the NNPP has reached out to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu to intervene in the matter in favour of the NNPP candidate to remain as governor and subsequently decamp to the APC.

Read Also: Clark to CJN: correct grave anomalies in judiciary

“There is nowhere such a meeting was held with either Mr. President or any leader of the party. President Bola Tinubu is a Democrat and strongly believes in the rule of law and the right thing to be done. Therefore, he will not be a part of any arrangement or reconciliation to subvert justice and support people who have stolen votes or breached the Electoral Act to emerge as leaders.”

Abbas stressed that APC would intensify efforts to pursue its case at the Supreme Court to a logical conclusion.

The APC Kano chairman assured the ruling party’s supporters and the people of Kano State that the party’s standard bearer would be victorious at the apex court.

He said there were concrete and convincing evidences the APC had presented at the tribunal and the Appeal Court which ultimately led to the party’s success.

On the “anticipated crisis” purportedly sponsored by the NNPP, the APC chairman said there was no tension in Kano State.

According to him, the people are happy with the recent developments from the judgment of the tribunal and the Appeal Court and are anxiously waiting for the apex court to examine the two rulings on their merits.

Abbas said Kano remained peaceful and that the people were conducting their normal businesses, despite efforts by the NNPP to provoke and incite youths to create a political crisis in the state.

Buhari at 81: Governors, Lalong, Kalu, Fayemi, Tallen, others eulogise ex-President

Governors AbdulRahman AbdulRazaq (Kwara), Umar Dikko Radda (Katsina), Babajide Sanwo-Olu, and Babagana Zulum (Borno) have poured encomiums on former President Muhammadu Buhari on yesterday’s celebration of his 81st birthday.

The senator representing Abia North, Orji Uzor Kalu, former Labour and Employment Minister Simon Bako Lalong, ex-Senate President Ahmad Lawan, ex-Ekiti State Governor Kayode Fayemi, former Women Affairs and Social Development Minister Pauline Tallen, and Katsina State House of Assembly Speaker Nasir Yahaya-Daura also felicitated the ex-President on his special day.

In a statement yesterday in Ilorin, the state capital, by his Chief Press Secretary, Mallam Rafiu Ajakaye, the Kwara State governor, who is also the Chairman of the Nigerian Governors’ Forum (NGF), described the ex-President as a leader with many outstanding accomplishments.

AbdulRazaq said the former President symbolises humility, grit, calm, and patriotism.

  • Father and son

    Father and son

The duel between Nyesom Wike and Sim Fubara recalls the episode between Napoleon and a Russian envoy. Master craftsman Leo Tolstoy waxed it into a legend in the most ambitious of all novels, War and Peace. Emperor Napoleon Bonaparte dropped a handkerchief in front of the Russian ambassador and expected the envoy to pick it up. In irony, the Russian dropped his own handkerchief beside Napoleon’s and picked his own fabric. The French general stooped, in spite of his fabled swagger of a hat and his imperial majesty, to retrieve his piece of cloth. Fubara thinks his handkerchief is whiter, lacier than Wike’s. But Wike is the haberdasher.

Fubara is in such a satiric contempt of his former boss and benefactor. In his wry mood, Wike must be wondering why Fubara is in such a wry mood. The drama is unfolding so fast, few have enough time for context. The fight is in several incarnations: between godfather and godson, benefactor and beneficiary, gratitude and disdain, Ijaw versus Wike, FCT versus lawmakers versus executive. In this fight, law has fallen hostage to the sophistry of SANs. Are the defecting assembly men leaping in the dark, or are they lurking to pluck down the governor?

There may be a failure of definition here. Maybe Fubara was never born as Wike’s son while Wike thought himself a father, an obstetric upheaval, a new oedipal twist. Not like Kwankwaso and Ganduje, Chime and Nnamani, Ibori and Okowa, Akpabio and Emmanuel, Kalu and Orji, et al. Which model is Fubara re-enacting? Psycho-social pundits may classify Fubara’s act. Is it an imitation, adaptation or parody of previous father-son lock-horns? Others have said, it took a year, sometimes three years, before the godson cut off the umbilical cord. Street roar, boardroom brawl, a slap in the face, a menace from hirelings, which?

Fubara does not fit any model. It is not even Chime versus Nnamani. Before his investiture, Chime had invoked the holy spirit to arrest Enugu State House demons while Nnamani still inhabited the palace. Fubara denies any cord or accord. Fubara model is a parody. If others waited, he had no patience. If Chime threatened, Fubara’s lips were still. Even if it took three months before the blood spill between them, the quarrel must have started three months earlier.

Read Also: Kano: No deal with NNPP to compromise Supreme Court judgement, APC dispel rumour

Given the gale of resignations, the bulldozer’s rumble, the stealthy coalitions, yaps of protests, we may say Fubara’s is new, a virgin clearing. Even in the perpetual tumult of Rivers State politics, it is a virgin clearing. But each of them is fighting and hurting, and are, in the words of French Poet Baudelaire, “I am the wound and yet the blade.”

Fubara is denying the Wike DNA. After denying the political bloodline, other links are easy to cut. He can say he is no beneficiary because the people, not Wike, voted him in. His is not disdain because he is now governor and Wike is not. Yes, it is an Ijaw matter because he is the first in the Fourth Republic to mount the chair. Wike gave and he is trying to take it away. This thinking is the making of Fubara’s delusion of grandeur.

If he has a grudge, there is a right way to be right and a right way to be wrong. His is a wrong way to be right. Even when we are right, we don’t have to be right. That is the life of good breeding and maturity. Fubara lacks it. You don’t blast an edifice costing billions to advertise your piety.

The issue is that once in power, it is easy to become the power itself. That is the problem with men like Fubara, who played the obsequious buffoon while he followed Wike around during the campaigns. He was bidding his time. That is the cynic at play, the quiet, grasping power monger. He thinks himself a liberator, a revolutionary even. He is the one who is going to bring down the mighty man of valour. He sees himself at once as a hero and rebel, who would, in the words of Albert Camus in The Rebel, “die on one’s feet (rather) than live on one’s knees.”

What is at stake is not Wike or Fubara, but democracy. At the moment, it is a question of power. Many are saying Fubara is currying the Rivers street by playing the underdog. No one really knows the story. Some say it is money, but no evidence. Wike has denied it. Some say it is control of the state, but Wike says it is about the integrity of his political family. But Fubara has kept mum, and the Rivers street is apt to clutch at the commonplace narrative: that it is a bully hectoring a puppet. The absence of a good open brawl, with Wike jabbering and Fubara swiping back, has left the whole drama a fight without blows. The only idea next to democracy is Wike’s assertion that Fubara is dining with the enemy. In politics that is crime number one. Charles De Gaulle’s close friend and topflight novelist, Andre Malraux once wrote: “If you abandon a certain number of deputies or if they abandon you, that is an incident. If you abandon an idea, that is not an incident, it is a suicide.”

So, what is Fubara’s idea if not suicide, for he has abandoned the family that enthroned him. Perhaps hence the APC executive was dissolved, and the lawmakers who defected can now take their place in the new party. It is a realignment of forces. Fubara is giving shelter to malcontents, shelter of a leaky roof.

Some lawyers have said there is no crisis at the national level. They probably forgot that it is because he fought Atiku in the centre that the party in Rivers State was cut into two, with persons like Secondus and Atiku’s cronies on the other side. Major PDP players including governors in the party split the party. Fubara is a product of that maelstrom and Wike is in the centre of it. Let us be wary and let the court takes its course.

He has probably seen the end, and he may be eyeing the deep end. Illusion is a companion of power. He may see a bad end and may be heading inexorably towards it, like Oedipus. He may think himself a sort of Prometheus who brandishes a revolutionary torch. In his play on Prometheus, Aeschylus quotes him as saying, “No misfortune can fall upon me that I myself have not foreseen.”

Big events took place of late. One is the continuing raft of resignations. The second is the pulling down of the house legislature. The third is to sign a budget with four lawmakers. The four lawmakers’ scenario is a spillover from the Obj years of impunity. Obj amassed a few men to impeach governors. Fubara used it to commit a governor’s impeachable offence with the budget. He gives the impression of chaos. Fubara believes he is levitating himself as a man of destiny, out on a sacred mission. We saw that in the way he pulled down the house. He thinks he is pulling down a stronghold. But it may show he has no strong hold on power. He is probably thinking like the irreverent philosopher Nietzsche who wrote, “To raise a new sanctuary, a sanctuary must be destroyed. That is the law.” So, with all the trouble going on, he sees his act as what the sawdust Caesar of Italy, Benito Mussolini proclaimed, “the holy religion of anarchy.”  It consumed him. Fubara should not see himself in the mould of Napoleon, who crowned himself and wife Josephine in Rome. He then declared, “God gave me this crown. Let anyone who touches it beware.” He lost it all at Waterloo. His head defiled crown and could not hold it.

Reno Omokri tweeted that the crisis in Rivers State contrasts that of Ondo State as mirror of cultural differences. He may be right if we take away the Wetie and Agbekoya affairs. But the southwest state has handled it with tact while the Rivers State has been a quicksand.

The Rivers State crisis also reminds us that political turmoil sometimes does not involve the masses. They look on and take sides. While the streets yelp, the solution lies with democracy’s puppeteers, in the halls of courts and the intrigues of big men. It is a feline hour, and the schemes of men and cat often rhyme. That is what is unfolding.

So, Fubara should be wary of stacking up impeachable offences. Or else, the bringing down of the house may begin the obsequies of his reign.

  • Not the same numbers

    Not the same numbers

The BOS of Lagos unveiled a N2.2 trillion  budget last week. It is a reminder that Lagos is a cut above other states in the country. No state has had even a trillion naira except one in the last dispensation which  did it more out self-aggrandisement than a measure of the state purse and ability.

Some are even eight times lower than Lagos. Some of the other big names are close to a trillion but have not even been able to sniff it. So, Lagos can afford many things the others cannot. The BOS can afford the trains, the sprawl of housing projects and schools. Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu announced 50 per cent bonus for the civil servants and political office holders and the money will not be taxed.

It is the power of internally generated revenue, especially since Lagos is not yet an oil state like the Niger Delta colossi. It is a testament to the tradition of governance that has built on the predecessor’s milestone. The BOS has kept faith with this in innovation and enterprise. It brings to mind the song by the late singer Fatai Rolling Dollar, Won kere si number wa. That is, they are no match for our number. Indeed, N2.2 trillion is a big sum. Lagosians are looking forward to a new year of more development from the BOS.
