Airhiavbere: How APC can win 2024 governorship election in Edo

The immediate Executive Director, Finance and Administration of the Niger Delta Development Commission (NDDC), Maj.-Gen Charles Airhiavbere (rtd.), has disclosed that the All Progressives Congress (APC) can win the September 21, 2024 governorship election in Edo State, by fielding a very qualified candidate.

Airhiavbere, who spoke on Sunday, December 17, in Benin, underscored the pivotal role of the right candidate in garnering enthusiastic support from the people of Edo for the APC.

He said: “In the Edo State 2024 governorship election, the APC will thrive with the right candidate, and I have the reach and qualifications to win the election.

“I supported the election of the present Edo Governor, Mr. Godwin Obaseki, in 2016 on APC’s platform. In 2020, I was part of the seven aspirants who agreed to the consensus that produced Pastor Osagie Ize-Iyamu as the standard bearer of APC. It is my turn to try.”

The governorship aspirant, who tagged his manifesto “PIE,” an acronym for Peace, Infra-structural Development and Economic Prosperity, also stated that noted that his campaign for the ticket of the party revolved around the three foundational pillars and interconnected elements essential for crafting a better society for all.

He said: “For anything to happen in any environment -even in our homes – there must be peace. Without a peaceful Edo State, there will be no food security. You cannot even attract investors to the state and the people cannot have the best life.

“A robust infrastructure is the backbone of any prosperous state. I will prioritise infrastructural development by investing in modern transportation systems, sustainable energy initiatives, and upgraded technology networks.

“I will implement policies that will stimulate job creation, encourage entrepreneurship and support small businesses.”

Airhiavbere also stated that by fostering a conducive environment for innovation and investment, he aimed to boost economic growth and ensure that the benefits were shared equitably among all Edo residents.

Shakarau to FG: make poverty eradication centre-piece of national devt

A former governor of Kano state, Senator Ibrahim Shekarau has called on the federal government to adopt poverty eradication as the centre piece of its national development agenda.

Shekarau made the call in his presentation as a keynote speaker at the 5th Annual Conference of the International Islamic University Malaysia (IIUM) Alumni Association (Nigeria Chapter) tagged: Nigeria’s Social Economic Conditions: Realities and Remedies.”

The Emir of Keffi, Nasarawa state, Shehu Chindo Yamusa III, the president, IIUM Alumni in Nigeria Chapter, Professor Bashiru Adeniyi Omipidan and director, IIUM Alumni Relations Division, Dr. Illmyzat Bin Ismail also partook in the virtual event.

Shekarau said the call has become necessary to ameliorate the current harsh socio-economic conditions confronting Nigerians.

He noted that socio-economic conditions determine the well-being of citizens because it shows exactly how citizens fare in terms of income, safety and security, jobs, access to health care facilities, education and electricity among others.

Shekarau who was represented at the occasion by a renowned economist, Dr Muhammad Sagagi, however, insisted that Nigeria’s socio-economic condition is poor.

Shekarau said: “We must recognize that Nigeria does not, despite the vast resources that we have, we must accept that Nigeria has no fiscal resources that are required to develop the country and therefore you have to leverage on private sector resources, skills, and technology.

“This can be achieved through business environment reforms to attract private investment.

“The third aspect of your strategy is that governments at all levels must pay attention to eradication of poverty, inequality and joblessness.

“Economic growth by itself would not trickle down to the bottom of the pyramid without concerted efforts.

“You cannot expect this to trickle down to the bottom of the pyramid. Nigeria must design a robust redistribution programme efficient enough to tackle the problems of poverty, and joblessness.

“Also, a serious country that has poverty of this magnitude must adopt poverty eradication, at the centerpiece of its development.

“What does that mean? That means that economic performance will be measured by the number of jobs that you create, and the number of people that you lift out of poverty every year.”

In his remarks, the President of IIUM Alumni Association (Nigeria Chapter), Professor Bashiru Adeniyi Omipidan,
expressed hope that Nigeria will speedily come out of the current economic challenges.

He said the conference was meant to create a networking opportunity for about 800 IIUM Nigeria Alumni members and over 118,000 Alumni across the world.

He said the event was also meant to contribute to finding solutions to intractable economic challenges confronting the country.

On his part, the Emir of Keffi appealed to wealthy Nigerians to make positive contributions to long-term sustainable peace and development by working directly with people affected by humanitarian crises.

He said the principles of neutrality, impartiality, and independence are fundamental to human and humanitarian actions, adding that humanity means that human suffering must be addressed wherever it is found, with particular attention to the most vulnerable.

According to the Emir of Keffi, “We should enforce policies and social protection system for youths and women.

“Women are less likely to have access to social protections, like pensions, unemployment benefits, maternity protections, and equal pay.

“For our youth, empowerment is important because empowerment means that people are equal citizens. They are respected and confident in their communities.

“You can empower someone to act or make someone empowered. It is about ways of working and supporting someone that means they can take control or responsibility for their own lives.”

  • Adeboye: Why I didn’t stop Pastor Ghandi from becoming Soun Ogbomoso

Adeboye: Why I didn’t stop Pastor Ghandi from becoming Soun Ogbomoso

The General Overseer, Redeemed Christian Church of God (RCCG), Pastor Enoch Adeboye, has disclosed that he did not stop Pastor Ghandi Olaoye from vying for the Soun of Ogbomoso’s stool because he had been ordained a king before he was born.

Olaoye was a senior pastor in RCCG before he was selected and approved for the Soun’s stool.

He will receive his staff of office as the 21st Soun of Ogbomoso on Tuesday, December 19.

Adeboye explained his position while delivering a sermon at the interdenominational coronation service for the new monarch at Beulah Baptist Conference, Ogbomoso on Sunday, December 17.

The cleric recalled that when Oba Olaoye came to inform him about his idea, he encouraged him because he knew that he was actually born to be a king.

He said he asked Oba Olaoye to go and pray about it but that he came back after some time that he didn’t hear anything from God about it.

He said he asked him to go and pray again because he wanted God to speak to him directly so both of them would be clear that God wanted him to be king.

He said Olaoye later came back to inform him that God had confirmed that he should join the race.

Adeboye said: “It was then that I told him to go ahead because it has been destined. I knew that long ago but I wanted God to speak to him directly.

“To my critics, if I had said No and God said Yes, whose word is the final? God, of course. So I cannot stop him because Pastor Ghandi was destined to be a king even before he was born and thank God it is coming to fruition.”

Taking his scripture from Acts 15:18, the respected cleric counselled the monarch to embrace people and promote peace and unity among his subjects.

Thereafter, he anointed Oba Olaoye annd his wife and prayed that his reign would be peaceful and prosperous.

In his speech, the monarch described Adeboye as his spiritual role model and a father indeed.

He said: “Pastor Adeboye has been a father to me. It is an unforgivable sin if you report me to Pastor Adeboye. I don’t like people reporting me to Pastor Adeboye. We have gone to the whole world together and I have watched him closely and I see a genuine man of God.

“I am happy today that the person who laid hands on me to become a pastor is the same who anointed me when I became king.

“To my people in Ogbomoso, let us work together. Let us develop this land and let us make this land a place where our sons and daughters will be proud of. I believe it is a new dawn for Ogbomoso.

“I Will be a king to the Christians , Muslims and traditional worshippers. I will be a king to every son and daughters of this land. That is my strength and I believe that God will give me the grace to lead His people. I want everybody in this land to pray for me so that I will live aright.”

Special prayers were also offered by the President, Nigerian Baptist Convention Rev Dr. Israel Akanji; Bishop Titus Olayinka; Archbishop Ayo Ladigbolu and Pastor J. S. Adegoke.

Others are Rev. Dr. Ademola Isola; former President of the Baptist Seminary Prof. Nihinlola Emiola; Rev. Stephen Ola Ayankeye; Bishop Olayinka Moradeyo; Rev. Johnson Adeniji and Prophet Akintola, among others.

Adamu, popularly called the “Bridge,” began his political career in 1977 when he was elected a member of the Constituent Assembly, which drafted the 1979 Constitution.

In 1999, following the restoration of democracy in Nigeria in 1999, Adamu became a founding member of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).

He contested and won the governorship election of Nasarawa State. He was governor for eight years between May 1999 and 2007.

On January 29, 2014, he and 10 other PDP senators joined the APC.

In the Senate, Adamu was appointed the Chairman of the Senate Committee on Agriculture.

He also chaired the Northern Senators Forum (NSF) but was removed in 2018 for alleged “financial mismanagement and maladministration,” according to a letter from the Forum’s signed by its then spokesperson, Dino Melaye, and read on the floor of the upper chamber by the then Deputy Senate President, Ike Ekweremadu.

Adamu was at various times Chairman of the Board of Directors of Benue Cement Company, Gboko and a member of the Board of Directors of the Nigerian Television Authority (NTA).

Yuletide: Police restate ban on sale, unauthorised use of fireworks in Enugu

The Enugu State Police Commissioner, Kanayo Uzuegbu, has said that the ban on sale and unauthorised use of fireworks, commonly known as “knockout” or “banger,” is still in force in the state.

The State Police Public Relations Officer, DSP Daniel Ndukwe, on behalf of the commissioner said this in a statement on Sunday, December 17, in Enugu.

Ndukwe quoted the commissioner as saying that the menace associated with letting off fireworks include: criminals using it to perfect their criminal intentions and creating tension.

He added that promoting fireworks could pose serious danger to human lives and property due to high tendency to cause bodily injuries and fire outbreaks, particularly during the harmattan.

He cautioned dealers and users of fireworks to refrain from it forthwith.

He added: “parents and guardians should discourage their children and wards from buying and igniting fireworks; violators would be made to face the full weight of the law.

  • Senate challenges MDAs to exceed N18.3trn revenue benchmark for 2024

Senate challenges MDAs to exceed N18.3trn revenue benchmark for 2024

The Senate has called on revenue generating agencies to exceed the revenue of N18.324trillion target of the federal government for the 2024 fiscal year.

The chairman, Senate Committee on Finance, Senator Mohammed Sani Musa (APC-Niger East) made this known.

President Bola Tinubu had last month, presented an 2024 Appropriation Bill of N27.503trillion to the joint session of the National Assembly.

The projected revenue target for the 2024 fiscal year in the Appropriation Bill is N18.324trillion.

In assessing the preparedness of the agencies ahead of the task, Senator Musa had separate interactive sessions with the revenue generating agencies last week where he told them to strive to surpass the target revenue for next year.

In one of such meetings with the Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited (NNPCL), led by its Group Chief Executive Officer (GCEO), Mele Kyari, Musa urged the oil giant to surpass their revenue target.

He said: “It is heartwarming that based on your submission, NNPCL has within January and October  this year, raked in N4.5trillion as revenue and remitted it into federation account.

“But being fully commercialised company now, more of such are needed, particularly in the 2024 fiscal year.

“President Bola Tinubu on his part, in the budget presented to the National Assembly, clearly demonstrated that deficit budget of N9.18trillion should be eased out for 2024 as against N13.4trillion used for such in the outgoing 2023 fiscal year.

“This committee in particular and other relevant standing committees of both the Senate and the House of Representatives would through oversight activities and regular interface with revenue generating agencies, ensure that required revenues are generated to

aid full implementation of the proposals and projections made for the 2024 budget.”

Also at the sidelines of colloquium to mark the 61st birthday anniversary of President of the Senate, Godswill Akpabio last Thursday, also told journalists that N100trillion budget proposed by the guest speaker at the event, Olisa Agbakoba (SAN), for the 2025 fiscal year was achievable.

He added: “The suggested budget size for 2025 may look big but achievable if all the revenue generating agencies work

to block leakages in the system.”

  • FG warns southern Kaduna communities against illegal mining

FG warns southern Kaduna communities against illegal mining

Ministry of Solid Minerals Development has sensitised communities and other critical stakeholders in the southern part of Kaduna state on the dangers of engaging and allowing illegal mining activities in their localities.

The meeting, which was organized by the northwest office of the Ministry of Solid Minerals in Kafanchan, Jamaa Local government, brought some mining stakeholders together from the zone, brainstormed and chatted a way forward for effective and sustainable development in the mining sector.

While presenting his Paper at the Towhall meeting, the acting zonalines Coordinator of the North West Kaduna, engineer, Kutman Hosea Ali explained that the ministry was committed to enhance collaboration and understanding among all stakeholders by fostering a conducive environment for sustainable mining activities.

Ali noted that Southern Kaduna was an emerging mining zone, hence the need for sensitization.

He said: “We are here on behalf of the minister who directed that a meeting of this nature shou6be held in Kaduna and Kafanchan in particular.

“This is because Southern Kaduna is coming up as an active mining zone; it’s active in the sense that lithium, which is becoming a hot cake globally, is found predominantly here”

“That is why we have come to sensitise the communities and the mining companies to their responsibilities to each other,” he stated.

Earlier in his paper presentation, an operative of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission from Kaduna command, Mr Eric Billy reminded all stakeholders at the Townhall meeting that, illegal Mining is an economic crime that must be reported and offenders must face the consequences of his action.

“People should try and get the requisite license, because there are a lot of them involved in this illegal licensing and when EFCC go after them they will complain of witch hunting only for deeper investigation to reveal they are culpable”,he narrated.

He also cautioned those with the mining license to also operate within the scope of the permission given to them.

The Chief of Moroa, Mr Tagwai Sambo expressed delight with the Townhall Sensitization to the people and promised to always preach peace to his subjects.

Monday Barau, who spoke on behalf of mining companies in Kaduna, attributed the poor contribution of the sector to Nigeria’s economy to illegal mining. He however solicited the support of stakeholders to reposition the mining sector and maximise its potential.

  • FUOYE VC hails Tinubu over exemption of from IPPIS

FUOYE VC hails Tinubu over exemption of from IPPIS

The Vice Chancellor, Federal University, Oye Ekiti, (FUOYE) Prof. Abayomi Fasina has applauded President Bola Tinubu for exempting the public universities in the country from the Integrated Personnel and Payroll Information System (IPPIS).

Prof. Fasina who described the decision as a right step in the right direction, said the move would allow public universities to have greater autonomy in effectively running their affairs.

The VC spoke on Sunday while receiving award of excellence from Correspondent chapel of the Nigeria Union of Journalist Ekiti State Council in recognition of his exemplary performance in the institution

Prof. Fasina said it was heart-warming to hear that public univerisities and other tertiary institutions in the country would henceforth would manage their payroll and personnel information.

This, he said, would ease administrative burden faced by the universities as well as remove the bureaucratic bottlenecks brought by payroll platform in the area of recruitment and promotion of staff.

The VC explained that the introduction of IPPIS contributed to the problem faced by universities in the country because it eroded their autonomy as well as failed to accommodate the peculiarities of the university administration.

He said by the singular act, Tinubu has demonstrated his genuine intention and commitment to turn around the fortunes of the education sector, assuring that the exemption would birth a new university system.

Speaking on the impact of the removal from IPPIS, he said: “The advantage is that we are now independent to decide on proper management of the system. We can always also take from our IGR to supplement what we are given by the government.

“Another advantage is that we want the government to increase our salary and with this development, we can subsidize such increment with our IGR. We are currently poorly paid as lecturers in Nigerian Universities. For example, a professor should not earn less than a million naira.

“This development will save us a lot of troubles of running to Abuja to get approval for so many things we can easily handle on our own. Such things as recruitment and others. We are having the autonomy now and we would manage our system efficiently on our own.

“There is so much bureaucracy in IPPIS which give us so much headache. We have some of our staff members who haven’t collected their salary for many months now because of that bureaucracy. We have a situation where a former VC who went on sabbatical was denied his salaries on return for several months due to the bottlenecks of IPPIS.”

  • Appeal Court decides Fintiri, Binani’s fate Monday

Appeal Court decides Fintiri, Binani’s fate Monday

Governor Ahmadu Fintiri of Adamawa State was upbeat Sunday as the state awaits the decision of the Court of Appeal on the case filed against him by his opponent in the last governorship election, Senator Aishatu Ahmed (Binani).

Binani was equally hopeful as the Court of Appeal fixes Monday, December 18, to pronounce its judgement on the appeal that she filed as the state Governorship candidate of All Progressives Congress (APC) in the March 2023 governorship election.

She is in court challenging the victory of Fintiri, the candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in the election who was declared winner and has since remained the state governor.

The Abuja Division of the Court of Appeal which had earlier heard the case and reserved judgement, will on Monday deliver the judgement.

Binani had gone to the Court of Appeal last month after the Adamawa State Governorship Electoral Petitions Tribunal in October 2023 dismissed Binani’s petition.

Binani had gone to the tribunal asking it to void the declaration of Governor Fintiri by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), as elected governor of Adamawa State.

In her petition, Binani who listed INEC, Fintiri and PDP as the first, second, and third respondents respectively, asked the tribunal to annul the election over non-compliance with the Nigerian Electoral Act.

The tribunal had however dismissed Binani’s petition and affirmed Fintiri’s victory, prompting Binani to go to the Court of Appeal.

As the state awaits what the court will decide on Monday, Fintiri said Sunday that the Appeal Court sitting in Abuja will, like the Tribunal in Yola, dismiss Binani’s decision.

“Just like the verdict at the Tribunal, we are very optimistic that the verdict of the Appeal Court will favour us,” Fintiri said through his Chief Press Secretary, Mr Humwashi Wonosikou.

On her part, Binani urged her supporters to remain calm, saying, “I strongly believe the Court of Appeal will upturn the victory of PDP.”
