    • …as Taraba gov, NYSC DG hail First Lady’s non-partisan intervention as life-saving, far-reaching

First Lady Oluremi Tinubu on Monday officially handed over three mobile clinic units to the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) and the Taraba State Government, as part of efforts to strengthen healthcare delivery in underserved communities across the country.

The clinics, delivered under the Renewed Hope Initiative’s (RHI) Love on Wheels project, were handed over at a ceremony in Abuja.

Two of the units were allocated to the National Youth Service Corps, while the third was donated to the Taraba State Government.

Mrs Tinubu, who is also the National Chairman of the RHI, described the initiative as a practical demonstration of “care in action,” aimed at taking healthcare beyond hospital walls, improving access, shortening response times, and supporting flexible medical services, particularly in emergencies and hard-to-reach areas.

She explained that the two mobile clinics for NYSC were pledged on January 23, 2025, during the commissioning of the Nigerian Digital Museum in Abuja, while the Taraba unit was promised during her official visit to the state on April 11, 2025, at a programme for frontline health workers.

According to her, the delay in delivery was due to the clinics being built from scratch to meet certification standards.

Emphasising the non-partisan nature of the intervention, the First Lady said the donation to Taraba State, then governed by the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), reflected RHI’s commitment to putting Nigerians first, irrespective of political affiliation.

“Party politics aside, we have to provide dividends of democracy to our people. It is people first before the party,” she said, adding that the initiative was designed to reach every Nigerian in need.

She urged the beneficiaries to deploy the clinics responsibly to save lives and complement existing healthcare efforts, formally handing over two units to NYSC and one to the Taraba State Government.

Taraba State Governor Agbu Kefas expressed gratitude to the First Lady, describing the donation as a life-saving intervention that transcends party lines.

He said the mobile clinic would significantly improve access to quality healthcare in rural and hard-to-reach communities across the state.

“This is not just a facility; it is hope on wheels and a life-saving intervention for communities that have waited long for quality healthcare,” Kefas said, pledging transparent and responsible deployment of the clinic in line with the vision of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu.

Minister of State for Health and Social Welfare, Dr Iziaq Salako, commended the First Lady’s initiative, describing her as a public health champion and pledging federal support to ensure effective utilisation of the clinics by NYSC and Taraba State.

Director-General of NYSC, Brigadier General Oluseye Nafiu, said the two mobile clinics would significantly expand the corps’ rural health outreach, enabling medical teams to reach tens of thousands more Nigerians.

He described the donation as a strategic boost that would deepen access to free and quality healthcare in remote communities nationwide.

  • Lagos to clamp down on drainage encroachment in Lekki axis

Lagos to clamp down on drainage encroachment in Lekki axis

The Lagos State Government has announced plans to intensify enforcement against drainage encroachment and other environmental infractions in the Lekki axis, as part of efforts to mitigate flooding and protect critical water infrastructure.

The Commissioner for the Environment and Water Resources, Tokunbo Wahab, said this while leading an inspection of ongoing drainage projects and flood-prone areas in Ogombo, Lake Embankment, Ikate, Mobil area, Mobil Road, Kusenla, and other adjoining communities.

Wahab said the inspection followed intelligence reports on attempts to tamper with major drainage alignments, particularly System 46, warning that any interference could have far-reaching consequences for the Ikota River corridor.

“We received whistleblower information that there was encroachment on System 46. We have decided to install signposts to clearly demarcate the alignment and ensure that no one goes back to reduce or tamper with it, because it will eventually affect the Ikota River,” he said.

At System 44, the commissioner recalled that contraventions had earlier been removed from the drainage alignment two years ago, noting that contractors were still on site. He explained that persistent flooding along Mobil Road was traced to the temporary damming of upstream and downstream sections to enable construction works.

“We have directed the contractor to hasten work so the damned areas can be removed. About 800 metres remain on both the upstream and downstream sections leading to the Ikota River,” he said.

The commissioner added that the state government had expanded the scope of the project to include not only drainage construction but also the installation of a pump station to improve flood discharge capacity.

“This is our third visit here. After our earlier inspections, we awarded the job, and due to developments in the area, including the regional road project, we approved additional electro-mechanical works and a pump station to effectively manage flooding,” he added.

Wahab expressed concern over the takeover of wetlands and illegal sand-filling observed along Mobil Road, as well as the emergence of shanties along the Coastal Road corridor.

He said the government would erect signposts to protect wetland alignments and adopt a coordinated approach with the Federal Ministry of Works to address illegal occupation along the Coastal Road, which is a federal asset.

According to him, uncontrolled settlements around conservation areas pose environmental and security risks, adding that open burning observed behind a conservation zone could also threaten wildlife habitats.

On the timeline for completion of ongoing projects, Wahab said the drainage works were initially scheduled for 24 months, but the addition of new components could extend the project by about 12 months.

Speaking on the state’s preparedness for the 2026 rainy season, the commissioner stressed the reality of climate change, citing persistent rainfall in recent months.

“The rain has not stopped. Anyone who says climate change or global warming is not real is simply denying reality. Our responsibility is to continue advocacy, provide resilient infrastructure, and ensure residents take ownership of these facilities,” he said.

He urged residents to refrain from activities that undermine public infrastructure, assuring that the state government would continue to enforce environmental laws to safeguard lives, property, and sustainable development.

  • Why I wasn’t successful in America – Speed Darlington

Why I wasn’t successful in America – Speed Darlington

Controversial singer Speed Darlington has revealed that his 23 years in the United States brought more legal trouble, arrests, and emotional distress than professional success or financial gain.

Darlington, in a video, described the experience as isolating, marked by racial bias, and resulting in a trail of criminal records rather than a successful “American Dream.”

He contrasted his experiences in the US with his successes in Nigeria, stating that he built his mansion with earnings from his Nigerian career.

Darlington attributed his decision to leave the US to feelings of inadequacy and alleged racial marginalisation.

He cited concerns about racism, difficulties interacting with women due to his accent, and feeling undervalued as a black man in the US.

Darlington added that he feels respected and successful in Nigeria, where he has built a career and a life.

He said, “America did not favour me. I have access to the USA, but I don’t want to be there all the time. America has no favour for me, and I’m not ashamed to say it. The only thing I have is criminal records, arrest, arrest, arrest, arrest is all I got from the USA.

“So, after 23 years, I told myself it’s better for me to have access to America. I can go whenever I want to see my family for maybe 10 days, one week, or 4 days, and I will turn around and return. American society is not conducive to my mental and physical well-being. In America, my self-confidence is in the gutter. I can’t even talk to girls; I lack confidence whenever I’m in America. I’m always lonely. If I spend 9 months or two years, I will be lonely throughout, which means endless masturbation. It gets tiring.

“If I want to talk to a girl, firstly, I’m worried about my accent. Is she going to laugh at me? Am I adequate? American society has an atmosphere where a black man is nothing, and he has to overprove himself before he can get any respect. This is not how I want to live my life. While here, I amount to something. Everybody is black and dark-skinned. All these things are what I’m thinking.

“I love having access to the US anytime I want, but my mansion money with a swimming pool on top came from Nigerians. That fight I had with Portable was how I finished my mansion decking. That money helped me very well. That fight did not take place in Las Vegas; it took place in Lagos, Nigeria. It is better to be in a forest, climbing trees and be free, than to be in the centre of everything and be caged. I did not leave America with money.”
