Coalition of northern groups condemns deadly attacks in Kwara, Katsina

    • …calls for urgent security reforms

The Coalition of Northern Groups (CNG) has condemned the deadly terrorist attacks carried out between 3 and 4 February 2026 in Woro and Nuku communities of Kaiama Local Government Area, Kwara State.

The Coalition also condemned another grave attack in Katsina State, where over 20 people were killed by suspected bandits in Doma community, Tafoki Ward of Faskari Local Government Area.

In a statement issued on Friday by its National Coordinator, Comrade Jamilu Aliyu Charanchi, the CNG said credible reports from local authorities and community sources indicate that scores of residents were killed in the Kwara attacks, with casualty figures running into over 100, while many others sustained serious injuries.

According to the statement, homes, shops and farmlands were destroyed during the attacks, forcing survivors, mostly women, children and the elderly, to flee their communities in fear for their lives.

Charanchi said: “The attackers reportedly stormed the community in a coordinated assault, unleashing violence on residents, destroying homes, and forcing survivors to flee, once again exposing the persistent vulnerability of rural communities to armed criminal groups.

“The Coalition extends its deepest condolences to the families and loved ones of those brutally murdered in this senseless attack. We also express our heartfelt sympathy to the injured and to all residents who have been displaced and traumatised by this act of terror.

“The pain, grief and insecurity inflicted on these communities are unacceptable and must not be normalised. The people and communities, like all Nigerians, have the fundamental right to live in safety and dignity.

“The scale and brutality of this attack highlight the growing threat of terrorism and banditry spreading, and expose the dangerous gaps in the country’s security architecture, particularly in rural and border communities”.

The CNG calls on the Federal Government to ensure speedy widespread recruitment and training of the Forest Guards to complement security forces across the frontline areas.

The Coalition finally called on Nigerians to remain united, resilient and peaceful in the face of provocation, while urging leaders at all levels to rise to the gravity of the moment.

He stressed that the protection of citizens remains the primary responsibility of the government.

Charanchi said: “We welcome the approach as we believe those guards that would be drawn from the communities would be instrumental in combating terrorists and bandits in every nooks and crannies of our communities.

“While the Coalition acknowledges the sacrifices and efforts of security personnel on the front lines, the persistence of such deadly attacks shows that current responses remain inadequate.

“There is an urgent need for a more decisive, intelligence-driven and people-centred security strategy that prioritises the protection of lives over reactive damage control.

“The CNG therefore renews its call on the Federal Government and the Kwara State Government to take immediate and concrete steps to secure vulnerable communities, strengthen intelligence gathering, improve early warning systems, and ensure visible security presence in high-risk areas”.

He urge the authorities to provide timely relief, medical care and other support for victims and displaced families, while ensuring that those responsible for this atrocity are swiftly identified and brought to justice.

“Beyond immediate security measures, this tragedy underscores the need to confront the deeper drivers of insecurity, including poverty, unemployment, social exclusion and governance failures that allow violent groups to thrive,“ the added.

‘I’m sick, homeless’ – Actor Okemesi begs for help

Actor Bamidele Tope Saint, popularly known as Okemesi, has pleaded for help over alleged spiritual attack that left him homeless and paralysed.

In an interview with colleague Tony Montana, Okemesi revealed he has been suffering for almost a year, with his condition worsening despite medical treatment.

According to Okemesi, the attack began with a severe illness that left him crippled and unable to speak or stand.

After seeking medical attention at a Hospital, Okemesi said his condition persisted, prompting him to visit an Islamic cleric for spiritual assistance.

He attributed prayers and spiritual intervention for his gradual recovery.

Appealing fans for support, particularly, accomodation, Okemesi said he is now facing homelessness, relying on church premises for shelter, and struggling to meet basic needs.

Okemesi said, “It was a spiritual attack. May God protect us from spiritual arrows. I was taken to a Hospital, and people donated to foot my bills. But we realised it was beyond the hospital when my condition worsened. That was when the people with me searched for my relatives’ numbers on my phone.

“My senior brother in Osogbo asked them to bring me to him. He picked me up from the motor park and took me directly to an Islamic cleric for a solution. It was a serious attack. I became crippled. It was the prayers from people and God’s miracles that revived me. I couldn’t talk or stand. I began to walk with crutches a few hours after the Alfa gave me some spiritual items to use the same day I arrived.

“My brother was also attacked after I left the cleric’s place to stay with him for proper care. He was involved in an accident and also had a marital crisis with his wife. I had to leave his place and started staying on church premises. I don’t have a place to sleep, I don’t have anything. In fact, it’s difficult to feed. My fans, you are the only thing left for me. Please, I need your help to get back on my feet, especially with accommodation,” he stated.

  • Ex-student union leader lauds Prof. Onuchukwu for joining UNIPORT VC race

Ex-student union leader lauds Prof. Onuchukwu for joining UNIPORT VC race

…says he will make significant impact if he wins

A former students leader in Rivers State,  Rhino Owhorkire has hailed the acting vice chancellor of Ignatius Ajuru University of Education(IAUE), Prof. Okechukwu Onuchukwu for joining the University of Port Harcourt (UNIPORT ) VC race.

IAUE is a State own University with three large campuses in three local council areas of the State, Obio/Akpor, Port Harcourt City and Emohua.

Onuchukwu before being appointed  Acting VC of the University by former Governor Nyesom Wike on November 18, 2021 was a Lecturer in UNIPORT and held different positions in the School including, Head of  Economics department, Dean of faculty of Social Sciences and Director of UNIPORT Business School.

He has been on the Acting  VC capacity for more than four years without hope of being confirmed a substantive VC. There is apparently feeling of stagnation and uncertainty; moreso with the unending political imbroglio between Wike who appointed him and his successor, Governor Siminialayi Fubara who retained him.

Following the obvious reality, the Professor of Econometrics reportedly has obtained expression of interest form to contest for the position in UNIPORT, rather than to continue to mark time in Ajuru University,  afterall he is also popular in the School, and better equipped for the position with over four years experience and still counting.

Reacting to the news, Owhorkire lauded the moves, giving his moral and spiritual supports to the VC, noting that he would serve well with greater impact in the Federal University(UNIPORT), if given the opportunity.

Speaking in a statement he personally signed and forwarded to the Nation in Port Harcourt, the SUG President noted what he described as impressive and unprecedented transformations Onuchukwu has recorded across the three campuses of Ajuru University, despite serving on Acting capacity.

According to owhorkire, the VC’s impacts in the School spread across different strata of the University, including improved academic standard and performances, massive accreditation of departments and courses of the institution, infrastructure, security, improved power supplies, welfare of both students and staff members, campus communities/stakeholder/relationships among others, assuring that the University communities and his employer, the State government are proud of the transformations his leadership style has brought.

“As a former student Union Government (S.U.G) President of Uniport, I consider it a responsibility to publicly commend the wide-ranging academic, infrastructural, welfare, and administrative achievements recorded under the leadership of Professor Okey Onuchukwu as Acting Vice-Chancellor of Ignitus Ajuru University of Education Rumuolumini.

“From the outset, Prof. Onuchuku adopted a people-first, service-driven leadership approach, translating vision into visible and measurable outcomes. One of the most symbolic achievements of his tenure is the dualization of the university’s main entrance, which improved access, traffic control, safety, and institutional outlook.

“Under his leadership, there was massive fencing of the campuses of the University begining with the main campus at Rumuolumeni, to Ndele Campus, fencing of female hostels with four gate houses, and the fencing of staff quarters, significantly to strengthen security in the areas.

“His administration also oversaw the construction of four kitchens for students, the construction and completion of the Faculty of Social Sciences building through TETFund, the construction and completion of English House after needs assessment, and the construction of an additional building for the estate Department, among many others.

“To sum it up, these achievements define a tenure marked by vision, compassion, accountability, and measurable growth. Prof. Okey Onuchuku’s leadership offers a compelling model of people-centred university administration, one that other Vice-Chancellors across Nigeria would do well to emulate.”

“His contributions will remain indelible in the history of Ignatius Ajuru University of Education.” he said.

The unionist believes that Onuchukwu would replicate these achievements and surpass, if he wins the poll to become the next Uniport VC.

  • Peggy Onwu  bows out as Ikoyi Lady Captain

Peggy Onwu  bows out as Ikoyi Lady Captain

Lady Captain of the Ladies Subsection of Ikoyi Club 1938, Peggy Onwu, has concluded her tenure as the 2025–2026 golfing year draws to a close, capping what members described as an impactful administration driven by environmental sustainability, youth development and increased women’s participation in golf under her ‘Go Beyond’ theme.

Speaking at the end-of-year tournament tagged ‘Peggy’s Final’, held recently at the club, Onwu said the event symbolised a fitting conclusion to a year defined by progress and purposeful engagement within and beyond the golfing community.

“It has been another brilliant day and we are extremely grateful. We had good weather and great company. Today marks the end of this golfing year, and it has been a year of going beyond just playing golf,” she said.

Onwu noted that her administration placed strong emphasis on environmental sustainability and climate change awareness, introducing eco-friendly initiatives around the golf course and in neighbouring communities.

According to her, golfers typically spend three to four hours on the course and require hydration, which often results in plastic waste. To tackle this, the Ladies Subsection installed waste receptacles across the course to promote cleanliness and responsible waste disposal.

She added that the environmental advocacy extended beyond the club through climate sensitisation campaigns and tree-planting exercises in nearby schools.

“We visited schools around us, carried out climate awareness programmes and encouraged each child to plant and adopt a tree. The idea is that they will return in the future and be inspired by the environment they helped nurture,” she said.

Onwu also highlighted efforts to boost members’ financial literacy through enlightenment sessions on tax reforms and digital banking, noting that the initiative improved members’ understanding of safe and efficient financial transactions.

A major milestone of her tenure, she said, was the hosting of the 50th  Ladies Open tournament at Ikoyi Club 1938, which attracted participants from 12 countries.

“It was a landmark event and a beautiful celebration of 50 years of ladies’ participation in the tournament,” she said.

Looking ahead, Onwu disclosed plans to sustain youth development through the establishment of a golf training academy for girls aged five to 18, stressing that the sport plays a vital role in mental development, focus, strategy and confidence building.

“We want young girls to grow into confident individuals who can make independent decisions and compete globally. Golf is a complete developmental tool that builds both physical fitness and mental strength,” she added.

A member of the club, Aditya Raj, commended Onwu’s leadership, describing her as one of the most impactful Lady Captains in the club’s history.

“This tournament celebrating Peggy’s finale is always special. She has done extremely well and inspired many golfers,” he said.

Raj emphasised the need to encourage young people to embrace golf, noting that the club’s central location in Lagos makes it accessible to aspiring players.

“We encourage children, especially during school holidays, to take advantage of the facilities here. With professional coaches available, starting early helps them develop into excellent players,” he added.

Also speaking, former Lady Captain, Dr. (Mrs.) Angela Adegboyega, described Onwu’s tenure as transformational and forward-looking, noting that her initiatives elevated performance and strengthened camaraderie among members.

“She encouraged members to go beyond their limits and introduced programmes such as inviting international professional golfers to enhance performance. Her environmental initiative also significantly reduced plastic pollution within the club,” Adegboyega said.

She further praised Onwu’s commitment to youth development, recalling her role in organising national children’s golf tournaments that boosted awareness and participation among young players.

“Introducing sports like golf at an early age supports academic growth, career development and personal discipline. Peggy has made remarkable contributions to youth participation in golf,” she said.

Members unanimously described Onwu’s tenure as one that deepened sports development, promoted environmental responsibility and strengthened community engagement, leaving a lasting legacy within the Ladies Subsection of Ikoyi Club 1938.
