  • Nigeria records ₦1.03trn agricultural trade deficit in 2023 – Expert

Nigeria records ₦1.03trn agricultural trade deficit in 2023 – Expert

A Nigerian agricultural expert and Managing Director of Davidorlah Farms, Segun Alabi, has raised concerns over Nigeria’s growing agricultural trade imbalance, revealing that the country recorded a ₦1.037 trillion deficit in 2023 alone.

Speaking at a press conference at the National Assembly on Thursday, Alabi noted that this marks the fifth consecutive year Nigeria’s agricultural imports have surpassed its exports.

He attributed the widening gap to the importation of processed and finished food products such as wheat, sugar, and concentrates—items that Nigeria can produce locally.

“The continued reliance on imported food items undermines our economic diversification efforts. Agriculture remains the most viable path to achieving food security and increasing foreign exchange earnings, but we are not doing enough to realise its full potential,” Alabi said.

He also emphasised the increasing role of private agricultural firms in driving sectoral growth, noting that Davidorlah Farms is currently leading Nigeria in pineapple production.

Alabi called for stronger support for local producers and more strategic investment in the agricultural value chain to reverse the trend and strengthen the nation’s economic resilience.

Alabi said, “We have made it our mission to contribute meaningfully to Nigeria’s food economy through large-scale pineapple production and the processing of pineapple concentrate for both local consumption and export, which opens doors for direct foreign investment.

“Davidorlah Farms, as a private sector, plays a significant role in strengthening Nigeria’s economy through agriculture, particularly through its focus on pineapple cultivation and processing. By operating across the pineapple value chain from primary production to fruit supply and concentrate manufacturing, the firm contributes to both food security and agro-industrial development.

He said while oil remains Nigeria’s top source of foreign income, agriculture is quietly rising as a powerful force, saying “with Nigeria ranking fourth in the world for exports like cocoa etc, there’s huge potential waiting to be unlocked. Yet, we still import a lot of food, a sign that our farms need more support and better infrastructure.

“By boosting our agricultural exports, we can reduce our heavy dependence on oil and protect our economy from global price shocks. Plus, the foreign income from these exports can be reinvested into modern tools, better roads, and smarter farming, helping our farmers grow more and earn more.

He said, “With our increasing population projected to exceed 250 million by 2050, food demand is rising sharply. Through structured farming programs and improved yield practices, Davidorlah is helping to reduce reliance on imported food, thereby promoting national food sovereignty.

“Every hectare of land under Davidorlah’s model employs multiple hands — from farmers and managers to drivers, traders, and processors. Our commitment translates into thousands of direct and indirect jobs across rural Nigeria, especially among youth and women.

“Through our Farm Ownership Program, Davidorlah provides Nigerians with opportunities for people to become farm owners through our model. We are not just growing pineapples, we are growing wealth for families, entrepreneurs, and communities across the country.

“Nigeria loses billions annually importing food. Davidorlah’s export-focused production model aims to reverse this trend. By meeting global standards in pineapple quality and logistics, we open doors to international markets, thus earning foreign exchange and strengthening the naira.

BoA eyes N1.5tr recapitalisation to boost lending

The Bank of Agriculture (BoA) said it plans to raise N1.5 trillion (approximately $1 billion) in a major recapitalisation drive aimed at improving liquidity and expanding its lending capacity to the nation’s agricultural sector.

Speaking at a youth-focused agriculture event, BoA Managing Director, Mr. Ayo Sotinrin, said the fund will be channeled towards financing key agricultural value chains, addressing infrastructure deficits, and scaling innovations in areas such as seed systems, storage, and logistics.

Sotinrin reaffirmed the bank’s core mission of rural agricultural financing.

“Our goal is to support Nigeria’s 40 to 70 million farmers and reposition agriculture as a viable business, not just a way of life,” he said.

He emphasised the critical role of youth in transforming the nation’s food systems, calling for a sharp increase in productivity.

“We must move from one ton per hectare to nine tons. That’s how we tackle food insecurity and inflation, and become Africa’s true food basket,” he stated.

As part of its development finance strategy, BoA will continue offering loans at rates below the national prime rate, Sotinrin said, noting that specific figures would be announced after an ongoing restructuring process.

The bank is also accelerating its digital transformation to improve efficiency and ease of access to capital.

“We’re working to become a technology-driven, agile bank that delivers capital when and where it’s needed,” he said.

Additionally, he said BoA is preparing to launch a nationwide loan recovery campaign to reclaim over N20 billion in non-performing loans.

“We’re not a political movement. We’re a bank. Operation Recover All is about accountability. Debtors will receive formal letters urging full repayment. Those who comply may still qualify for future loans, under stricter terms,” Sotinrin said.

Sotinrin reiterated the bank’s commitment to empowering Nigeria’s farming population, especially young farmers, through accessible and affordable financial support.

He said the facility will provide a feed mill to support the firm’s  interest in nourishing the future of food and agribusiness across Nigeria.

According to him, the mill will help reduce feed costs and support growth of the aquaculture sector.

He was  confident that the aquaculture industry can be competitive globally.

  • WOFAN distributes agric inputs to 3,000 youth farmers’ group in 8 states, FCT

WOFAN distributes agric inputs to 3,000 youth farmers’ group in 8 states, FCT

The Women Farmers Advancement Network (WOFAN) has commenced the distribution of essential agricultural inputs to 3,000 youth farmers’ groups across eight northern states and the Federal Capital Territory (FCT).

The initiative, launched recently Friday in Kano under the Year 3 activities of the WOFAN-ICON2 Project and funded by the Mastercard Foundation, is aimed  at drawing young Nigerians, especially women, into modern, profitable farming by providing them with agricultural tools, knowledge of best practices, and financial support.

Founder and Executive Director of WOFAN, Dr. Salamatu Garba,  said the support is a one-time startup grant designed to empower youth and women with the tools needed to build dignified, sustainable livelihoods.

The distributed inputs, she said, are intended to support wet season cultivation of rice, maize, sorghum, and groundnuts across Adamawa, Bauchi, Benue, Gombe, Jigawa, Kaduna, Kano, Nasarawa states, and the FCT.

Each youth group received a 50kg bag of improved seeds, four bags of NPK fertiliser, two bags of Urea, and six litres of agrochemicals, sufficient for one hectare of cultivation.

“This initiative is not a loan; it’s a startup grant designed to enhance our youths’ interest in farming by providing access to financial services, best agronomical practices, community savings schemes, and modern agricultural tools and technologies,” she said.

In total, WOFAN has allocated 300,000 kg of seeds, 1,200 metric tons of NPK fertiliser, 900 metric tons of Urea, and 36,000 litres of pesticides for use in the 2025 dry and wet seasons.

At the FCT flag-off, WOFAN’s Business and Coordination Manager, Mr. Taiwo Olawale, highlighted that 80% of the community partners are women.

He stressed that the program is tailored to remove financial barriers that typically prevent young people, particularly women and persons with disabilities, from engaging in productive agriculture.

WOFAN Director of Strategies and Innovation, Hajia Maimuna Lawal, added that the grants are structured to allow youth to begin farming without going into debt.

“In an economy where raising capital poses significant challenges, the WOFAN-ICON2 initiative provides these grants so that young people can commence farming without incurring debt. The profits they generate can be reinvested in their farms for the next season,” she said.

Beneficiaries were also briefed on the program’s objectives and guidelines before receiving the inputs. One of the recipients, Hajiya Khadija Tijjani from Tudun Wada, expressed her appreciation: “This kind of support is life-changing for women like us. Many people don’t believe women can succeed in farming, but this grant gives us a strong starting point.”

The WOFAN-ICON2 Project, supported by the Mastercard Foundation, targets 675,000 young Nigerians across nine states over five years.

It aligns with the Foundation’s Young Africa Works strategy (2021–2030), which aims to connect 10 million Nigerian youth, which 7 million of them are women with dignified and fulfilling work.

Kwara distributes another machineries, inputs to farmers as new planting season begins

Kwara Governor AbdulRahman AbdulRazaq on Thursday flagged off another round of distribution of machineries and agricultural inputs to farmers across the 16 local governments as this year’s farming season gets underway.

The Governor called the gesture another practical demonstration of his administration’s commitment to food security, poverty reduction, and economic growth.

“Our administration has consistently prioritised agriculture, not just as a sector, but as a tool to empower our people, strengthen rural livelihoods, and create sustainable jobs,” the Governor said in Ilorin at a symbolic distribution of the agricultural items.

“What we are flagging off today is another wave of this assistance. More distributions will follow in organised batches, reaching deeper into our communities and reinforcing our shared productivity,” he said.

The Governor spoke through his Senior Adviser and Counsellor Alhaji Sa’adu Salau.

The government has always distributed tractors, implements, and inputs to farmers across the state — a culture that many farmers attested to at the event.

Among the items distributed on Thursday were 16 additional tractors,16 ploughs, 16 harrows, and 16 ridgers; 32,000kg (1,600 bags) of maize seeds, 18,000kg (360 bags) of Faro 44 rice seeds, and 10,800kg (270 bags) of TGX 1951 soya bean seeds; 720 sachets of inoculants to support nitrogen fixation and boost legume productivity; 5,040 bags of NPK (20:10:10), 5,040 bags of urea, and 720 bags of Single Super Phosphate (SSP); herbicides; 2,100 kg of atrazine for maize, 720 litres of butaforce for rice, and 2,880 ml of butaforce for soya beans.

Others were 4,320 litres of striker for maize, 7,200 litres of riceforce for rice, and 720 litres of legume force for soya beans; and 2,400 knapsack sprayers to ensure efficient use of chemicals on farms.

AbdulRazaq was happy at the notable progress the government has made in the sector, citing the rehabilitation of several rural roads that connect farm communities, and the expansion of access to quality inputs and mechanisation services.

The government has also invested in irrigation systems, supported farmer cooperatives, and opened up opportunities that allow the farmers to thrive, he added.

The Governor urged the benefitting farmers to use the items wisely for the transformation of their farms and communities.

“These inputs are not handouts —they are investments in your productivity, your future, and the prosperity of our state,” the Governor said.

Commissioner for Environment, Nafisat Buge, said the interventions were carried out under the Agro-Climatic Resilience in Semi-Arid Landscapes (ACReSAL), a programme in partnership with the World Bank.

Buge said food security is a major objective of the ACReSAL programme, adding that the event was a fruit of the wise investment of Governor AbdulRazaq’s administration.

Commissioner for Agriculture and Rural Development, Dr Afeez Abolore, and his counterpart in the Water Resources, Hon. Yunus Usman Lade, in their separate remarks, lauded the initiative and how the Governor has implemented it with passion for the good of Kwarans.

State Project Coordinator for ACRESAL, Alhaji Shamsideen Aregbe, said the programme seeks to empower local farmers with essential resources towards enhancing their productivity and livelihoods.

Aregbe said the government in December 2024 distributed 193 motorcycles to agricultural extension agents across the 16 local governments to further ease their business.

Chairman Kwara State Farmers’ Support and Welfare Association,

Abdullahi Ahmed, who spoke on behalf of the beneficiaries, thanked AbdulRazaq for support to farmers over the years and commitment to achieve food sufficiency in the state.

  • Lagos’ agric initiatives reach over 2m households

Lagos’ agric initiatives reach over 2m households

The Lagos State government has impacted the lives of over two million households through its targeted food subsidy and support programmes, the Commissioner for Agriculture and Food Systems, Ms Abisola Olusanya, has said.

“Under the State Food Subsidy Initiatives, we have successfully reached over 800,000 households. “These programmes provide much-needed financial relief, enabling families to access essential food items,” she said at a press conference attended by the state Commissioner for Information and Strategy, Mr Gbenga Omotosho .

She said the State Food Bank Support programme  has extended its reach even further, providing vital sustenance to those in critical need. “More than 1,285,000 households have received crucial support through our food bank interventions,” Ms. Olusanya affirmed, highlighting the government’s commitment to ensuring no one goes hungry.

She  detailed the impact of the Ministry’s strategic initiatives, emphasising a four-pronged approach aimed at building a resilient, inclusive, and sustainable food system for all. The core strategies include enhancing local food production, establishing crucial upcountry partnerships, developing robust food storage and logistics infrastructure, and improving market infrastructure across the state.

“Our mission has been laser-focused on creating a food system that is not only sustainable but also ensures that every Lagosian has access to nutritious and affordable food.

This  vision is being realised through a multi-faceted strategy that addresses the entire food value chain, from farm to table,”  Ms. Olusanya stated.

A key focus of the Ministry’s efforts, according to her  has been the drive to boost domestic food production within the state. Ms. Olusanya highlighted the strategic targeting of value chains where the state holds a comparative advantage, including poultry, fisheries, piggery, coconut, and horticulture.

“We are strategically investing in and supporting our local farmers and producers in key sectors. This not only increases the availability of fresh, locally sourced food but also creates vital employment opportunities within our communities,” she explained.

In  recognition of the limitations of solely relying on local production, she  said the Ministry has actively cultivated “upcountry partnerships” with other states. She said the collaborations are aimed to augment  food supply to Lagos, ensuring a consistent and diverse range of food products for its residents.

“Our partnerships with other states are crucial in ensuring a stable and reliable food supply chain for Lagos. By working collaboratively, we can overcome geographical limitations and provide Lagosians with the food they need,” Ms. Olusanya emphasised.

The adoption of community-driven development approaches in projects such  as  FADAMA III and Lagos CARES,have also yielded significant benefits as they have fostered increased local integration and ownership, improved governance at participating Local Government Areas (LGAs), and promoted Small and Medium-sized Enterprises (SMEs), indirectly benefiting approximately 100,000 individuals and small business owners.

Ms. Olusanya highlighted the transformative impact of the Lagos Rice Mill in Imota, commissioned in 2023. “The Imota Rice Mill, the largest of its kind in Africa, boasts an impressive capacity to produce 2.4 million 50kg bags of rice annually. The  landmark project has already created 1,500 direct jobs and an estimated 254,000 indirect jobs, significantly boosting our economy,” she stated.

Emphasis, she noted, has been placed on developing critical infrastructure to ensure food availability and minimize waste. This, she explained, includes substantial investments in food storage and logistics capabilities, as well as the development of modern market infrastructure and systems to streamline food distribution across the state.

According to her, the government would soon commissioned the  Lagos Central Food Security Systems and Logistics Hub, a flagship project envisioned to modernise and secure the state’s food distribution ecosystem. Conceptualised as a central, data-driven, and technologically integrated complex for food aggregation, storage, processing, and distribution, she explained that the hub is poised to be the largest food logistics hub in Sub-Saharan Africa upon completion.

“This hub is a game-changer for our food security strategy. It will feature facilities to service over 1,500 (40mt) trucks daily and is expected to significantly impact the N14 trillion food market in Lagos.” With the expected completion of Phase 1 within the next few months, it is anticipated to lead to a substantial reduction in food prices for Lagosians due to integrated facilities like cold and dry storage, a 14,000-capacity abattoir, and a jetty for streamlined goods transportation,” Ms. Olusanya said.

The Commissioner also highlighted the success of the Middle Level Agro-Produce Hub at Idi-Oro, Mushin, where food valued at N2,641,709,989 has already been traded. She further announced the identification of sites for three additional Mid-Level Hubs at Ikorodu, Festac Town, and Lekki Phase 1, aiming to decentralise food distribution and improve accessibility.

In Lagos, she explained that the   FADAMA programme focused on key sectors such as fisheries, poultry, piggery, and horticulture, has implemented over 1,309 sub-projects and supporting over 10,000 households with essential inputs, equipment, and training. “This programme  has been instrumental in boosting local production, contributing to a 43 per cen t increase in rice output through targeted interventions like land preparation and mechanization,” Ms. Olusanya explained.

According to her, the Lagos Aquaculture Centre for Excellence (LACE) represents another significant investment in the state’s food security infrastructure. “LACE is designed to produce 50 million fingerlings, 2,000 tons of table-sized fish, 20,000 tonnes of processed fish, and 24,000 tonnes of aquafeed annually. The centre aims to empower 5,000 smallholder fish farmers by providing them with quality inputs and serving as an off-taker for their produce, integrating them into the aquaculture value chain. The project is expected to create approximately 1,000 indirect jobs during its construction phase and 500 direct jobs upon completion, incorporating modern aquaculture technologies and serving as a hub for research and capacity building, “ she elaborated.

The Commissioner also highlighted the Red Meat Last Mile shops, a strategic initiative to modernise and sanitise the red meat value chain. “These shops ensure that residents have access to hygienically processed meat from government-approved abattoirs. Each shop is operated by four trained youths, creating employment opportunities. The initial rollout includes locations in Ijeh area of Dolphin Estate, Surulere, and Mushin, serving as pilot schemes for broader implementation,” she stated.

Under Enterprise Support – Financing, Ms. Olusanya disclosed that a remarkable 151,595 agri-businesses have received support through grants, inputs, tools, and advisory services, enabling them to scale sustainably. These includes various initiatives such as the Agrinnovation Club Grant (26 agro innovators), Eko Flavour Project (30 upcoming chefs), Ministry initiatives through LSADA/FADAMA (70,200 beneficiaries), Trader Money (15,000 market traders), Ounje Eko Farmer Subsidy Programme (4,000+), Ounje Eko Food Discount Market vendors (5,000), LAP (1,200), LCARES (33,639), Coconut Processing Training (600), Apiculture Training (300), Rice Development/Production/Butchers Academy (1,300), APPEALS (17,000), Red Meat Support (3,000), and the Lagos Fresh Food Hub (600).

Through strategic planning, robust partnerships, and active community engagement, we have laid a solid foundation for a food-secure and economically vibrant Lagos,” Ms.  Olusanya noted.

Looking ahead, the Ministry reaffirmed its dedication to ensuring that no Lagosian is left behind in the pursuit of sustainable food systems and economic prosperity, promising continued efforts to strengthen the state’s agricultural sector and enhance food security for all its residents.
