  • A matter of choice

“Coke and Sprite aren’t the only reasons that more than half of New Yorkers are overweight or obese”.

There is an interesting discussion around initiatives to protect and improve the health of residents of New York City that is instructive for us in Nigeria.

Indeed, the three-term tenure of Mayor Michael Bloomberg has been dotted with his desire to use restrictive policies to address health concerns – sometimes earning him the ire of many who say they do not want to live in a ‘nanny state’.

The latest policy he is trying to implement to protect overweight New Yorkers and those, arguably, in danger of becoming overweight is to cap the size of soft drink offers. Bloomberg wants to ensure that the 32-ounce size becomes illegal and peg offerings at 16 ounces. But so far, a judge has ruled that the city’s Board of Health is not empowered to limit or ban otherwise legal items to control chronic diseases.

In Nigeria, it is anyone’s guess how long it will be before our health care policy advisers decide to turn to the alleged ‘source’ of illnesses the way other countries are doing. Are manufacturers of soft drinks, fast food, and alcohol about to feel increased pressure from regulation similar to the way tobacco does?

There are many reasons international and local manufacturers of alcoholic beverages, such as Guinness and Nigerian Breweries, and soft drink manufacturers, such as the Nigerian Bottling Company should be nervous. But our Mr Biggs, Tantalizers et al must not feel too safe either as McDonalds – the subject of many documentaries – has also been the target of lawsuits by some consumers.

There are many explanations to the development of regulation and legal jurisprudence around consumer goods, which can only be said to ‘contribute’ to health. The trend makes it important for policy experts in Nigeria and the corporations to start analysing the implications.

For instance, as the New York court has moved to strike out the plans of Mayor Bloomberg to ban super-size soft drink offerings in New York City – is this type of policy regulation the role of the executive or the legislature? Which government arm should be responsible for this type of regulation? The same question would apply in Nigeria and the outcome would depend on the independence of the judiciary and the arguments made on each side. Laws can emanate from the executive, but it must be considered and passed into law by the Legislature.

Executives can make regulations to implement law or policy and so the question in Nigeria, in such a case would hinge on how wide existing laws are to provide the executive with the powers to, for example, ban the sale of fast food around schools. It is not an accident that if you visit most of the premier universities in the United States, you will find it near impossible to find a Burger King, McDonald or Kentucky Fried Chicken. The schools probably do not have anything in writing, but just have enough hold on the real estate within and around the school to prevent such franchises from setting up shop.

Next comes the issue of liberty and personal responsibility. The arguments in the case of the ban of the super size cups are fierce on the freedom of choice. One side claims that individuals have the right to make their own decisions and the state should not be allowed to tell them what to do.

If a person wants to eat fast food daily and, subsequently, becomes obese and vulnerable to heart disease and other related diseases, then it is that person’s choice. Others argue that consumers are being subliminally manipulated into buying and eating things, which are not good for them and that they do not have the right information.

And, finally, comes investments, profit and revenue. Corporations are in business to make returns on their investments and make money for shareholders and governments need to raise revenue to provide services. Where lies the balance between making policy, which directly impacts on the profitability of a company’s operations, and supporting businesses so that they can continue to pay taxes and create employment? It must be tricky and delicate to maintain and it is most unlikely that it happens when one side acts unilaterally.

In the final analysis, the jury is still out on whether Mayor Bloomberg’s policies will actually make a difference to the eating habits of New Yorkers and, ultimately, to reducing the incidence of obesity.

This, and other stated reasons, is instructive for those in Nigeria who make policies and those who observe them – sometimes the means never delivers the desired ‘end’.

  • Have you got the right deals?

You like deals. I like deals. We all like

good deals. Good deals give you that feeling of accomplishment, makes you believe you have spent your hard-earned money quite well. However, getting a good deal not only depends on what you are looking for, but where to get it. According to research, you can get things cheap in Singapore, like an MBA, but you can pay dearly for the car you drive and the Levi’s jeans you wear.

On the other hand, if you like pizza, like a friend, you can get it anywhere in the world; particularly at the pizza joints located on Allen Avenue, Ikeja. On the other hand, you cannot get it in Canada where a piece of Pizza Hut pizza in Ottawa is double the New York price for the same slice. If you want a bottle of coke to wash it down, Toronto and Ottawa are 12 per cent below a soda in NYC.

Likewise, if you are a smoker, research indicates that cigarettes are cheap in Moscow and Sao Paulo. However, in that part of the world, other things are very expensive. If you are looking for a job after you have obtained your MBA from Singapore, the best place to go is Mexico City. That is the cheapest major city in the world to hire and deploy an MBA graduate, although Singapore and Berlin are competitive in this regard.

In Deutsche Bank’s updated “Cheap Date Index” these cities, Melbourne and Sydney 22 per cent, Australia 24 per cent, are more expensive than New York if you’re looking for roses, pizza, a movie, two sodas and two beers. In India, the cheapest date can be arranged at about half the price of a New York date.

Overall, this year’s survey of “Cheap Date Index” found that Australia and Japan are very expensive across a wide range of products. I have not been to Sydney, but friends who had visited attested to how expensive Australia is from beer to breakfast. In addition, you do not have to argue this; United States is generally the cheapest developed country; far cheaper than Nigeria. Of course, the cost of getting there would offset any bargains. For more details on where to shop, go to www.rytedeals.com. I was there and my heart smiled.

In the first instance, www.rytedeals.com knocked the stress of shopping out of my veins. It then took me to a height I have not been before. That is what a good deal does to you. It makes your life a deal better and you cannot but spread the gospel. Before you get the gospel according to www.rytedeals.com, let us go to the beginning.  There has been a strong positive sentiment towards online shopping in Nigeria. At least, among the over 40 million Internet population who live in the urban centres, online shopping has spurned an army of online community.

There are enormous opportunities for e-commerce growth in Nigeria. The country’s over 105 million mobile phone users represent a great opportunity for e-commerce development. Many Nigerians shop online through their cell phones, others through desktop computers. According to the latest MasterCard worldwide online shopping survey, 92 per cent of Nigerians had shopped online three months before the survey was conducted.

Fifty-seven per cent indicated continued interest in online purchases. The survey, which measured consumers’ propensity to shop online, revealed that 59 per cent of Nigerians shops on international websites. However, the survey revealed that opportunities abound in the country’s e-commerce space and more Nigerians are willing to shop locally.

Thirty-eight per cent of Nigerians buy through Nigerian websites; 33 per cent do so for the convenience it offers while another 32 per cent believed goods are cheaper when you shop online. Now, that is the catch. More Nigerians are shopping online, and thus, this has opened windows, doors and gates of opportunities for entrepreneurs to step in and cash in on this new trend.

That is what has triggered several online retail shops in the country. As at the last count, there are about ten. Competition is fierce. Prices are crashing. Specialisation is evident. One of the online stores caters to residents of estates on the Lagos Island. Another sells groceries only. Another sells phones and peripheral items. Yet another caters to the palate of the young and old. Do not be surprised if another online store comes on stream and focuses on babies and teens. That is the heart of business; finding your niche and pursuing it.

For some Nigerians, the products or specialty is not what attract it is the price slash. For you (and me) it is the combination of three things: the sheer convenience of getting quality products at the right price. That does it for me. I am sure it does it for you too. That is what attracts you. That is attracts me. That is why more Nigerians are addicted to online shopping now. That is why customers go there and keep going there.

The online stores offer free delivery, cash on delivery (COD) and huge discount. Now, there is a lesson here: Global online platforms would accept payment before goods are delivered to you. Some Nigerian online stores pioneered that principle. Since the payment gateway in the country is not as robust, and internet bandwidth is not as strong, the trend did catch fire. Then, the Nigerian ingenuity crept in, and the COD strategy was born. Today, all the platforms offer this safety net.

However, one online store that got me is www.rytedeals.com or RyteDeals. Not only is the price out of this world, the range of products is wider. Once on the site, I felt like a kid lost in a departmental store on Christmas eve: you do not know what to pick. Everything is available. Cars, property, gadgets, health & fitness. You would also get food items, electronics, clothing, medical services, trainings, events, tours, accessories and more. Besides, there is a 75 per cent discount on all products and services purchased on www.rytedeals.com.

With the tempting offers, I checked the gadgets section and was surprised to get a tablet for (this is still unbelievable, as I have compared the price and none yet compared to the prices I got) N26,000. I smiled and whispered, I have got the right deals.  On other online stores, the same tablet was sold at N85,500, N89,500, N85,000. This is quite interesting, as one of the things shopping online does for you is give you the power to compare prices. That did it for me, and I am sure it would do it for you, too!

Do not get me wrong. There are other items on the menu. What caught my fancy was the tablet. Your interest may be home appliance, telephone, electronic, grocery or clothing, visiting www.rytedeals.com would give you the best value always. Now, here is a secret. I have set Ryte Deals news alert on my system. That way, each time a good deal comes on stream, I am aware quickly. Call it keeping a ‘tab on my interest’. Go ahead. Do it. You would get the best value always on www.rytedeals.com. I just did.

Naturally, shopping online saves you time and money. It gives you same day doorstep delivery. It guarantees you quality, quantity and quietness. For Nigerians, the competition among the online stores is good. For RyteDeals, the immediate objective is to give you the best value always and the RyteDeals, too.

  • South Africa is destination of the year

South Africa’s reputation as one of the world’s most sought-after offshoring destinations has received endorsement from the European Outsourcing Association (EOA), which named the country as its destination of the year.

Last year’s winner was another African country, Morocco. It was honoured along with MEDZ Sourcing, which manages business parks in Morocco that are dedicated to offshoring.

The EOA is Europe’s most important association of professionals and experts in the outsourcing industry, according to AbderrafieHanouf of MEDZ Sourcing. It has over 1,000 corporate members representing national trade associations from Austria, Belgium, France, Germany, Italy, Spain, The Netherlands, theUnited Kingdom.

South Africa was a finalist last year, and this year saw off competition from Russia and Serbia to clinch the top spot, and put the continent of Africa on the global map. It also boosts the African brand

The ceremony took place on in Amsterdam. South Africa was entered by the national association, Business Processing enabling South AfricaBusiness Processing enabling (BPeSA), and the award comes hot on the heels of its October, last year’s triumph at the London-based National Outsourcing Association’s yeraly ceremony, where it was voted the UK offshoring destination of the year.

BPESA Western Cape Chief Executive Gareth Pritchard was delighted with the honour, saying it confirmed the quality of service that South Africa offered to its European clients. “Services in other languages, combined with a growing base of high-end skills in financial and legal services, have highlighted the country’s status as a world-class offshoring location,” he said.

Offshoring contributes about $895-million to the province’s economy and employs thousands of people, according to the Western Cape’s minister of finance, economic development and tourism, Alan Winde.

Statistics from the City of Cape Town reveal that the city’s outsourcing industry grew from 20,428 agents in 2007/8, to 27,552 in 2011/12 – a year on year increase of 10.5 per cent.

During the same period, the offshoring sector increased from 2,963 to 4,727 agents. This represents a remarkable yearly growth of 16.9 per cent. Last year, the industry attracted investments of $57-million).

A survey by the international research group Everest Consultancy named South Africa as one of the top three emerging offshore business process outsourcing (BPO) destinations in the world.

Offshoring goes one step further than BPO, which relocates business processes that a company performs in-house, such as accounting or customer call centres, to a third-party service provider, to carry out on behalf of the company.

Outsourcing becomes offshoring when the third-party service provider is located in another country.

South Africa is expected to make steady progress in the offshoring sector in years to come, said senior analyst ParthaIyengar of technology research firm Gartner. He predicted the creation of 40,000 new jobs through offshoring by next year, while the local insourced sector would provide jobs for 120,000 people.

Iyengar said by 2015, he expected offshore contact centre jobs in South Africa to grow over three times the number in 2010.

Firms making use of South African facilities include, among others, British Gas; Amazon; Switzerland’s Edelweiss Air; global outsourcing leader WNS; Bloomberg; Virgin Mobile; Everything Everywhere, which handles communications for the Orange and T-Mobile brands; and British retailer Asda, which has been running its contact centre from Cape Town since 2005.
