NerdzFactory, UNDP, Mastercard foundation empower young innovators in Lagos

NerdzFactory Company, in collaboration with the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) and the Mastercard Foundation, has empowered young innovators with grants and capacity-building training aimed at scaling their innovative solutions.

The initiative took centre stage on Monday in Lagos at the Innovation State Showcase organised by NerdzFactory Company in partnership with UNDP and the Mastercard Foundation.

Policy experts, development partners and industry leaders at the event also renewed calls for increased government support for young innovators, stressing their role in driving sustainable development.

The event, themed “Youth Innovation as a Driver of State Development,” showcased youth-led solutions designed to address key development challenges.

Speaking at the event, the Founding Partner of NerdzFactory Company, Ade Olowojoba, described the Young Africa Innovates (YAI) Programme as a flagship initiative supported by UNDP and the Mastercard Foundation to identify, support and scale youth-driven innovations across the country.

According to him, the showcase highlights solutions aligned with Lagos State’s development priorities and demonstrates how the programme is enabling scalable, high-impact innovation led by young people.

“Mastercard Foundation is sponsoring the programme, UNDP will oversee its implementation, and NerdzFactory will provide training for the innovators,” he said.

The UNDP Resident Representative in Nigeria, Ms. Elsie Attafuah, praised the creativity and resilience of young Nigerians and urged governments at all levels to create policies that nurture grassroots innovation.

According to her, the showcase proves that breakthrough solutions can emerge from unconventional spaces such as local markets and small workshops.

“Young people are creating tools that address food losses, designing data-driven systems, and producing world-class ideas with minimal resources. Talent in Nigeria can come from anywhere,” she said.

Attafuah added that the YAI programme has helped entrepreneurs refine prototypes, validate business ideas, and connect with potential markets.

The Lagos State Commissioner for Commerce, Cooperatives, Trade and Investment, Folashade Ambrose-Medebem, said Lagos remains the hub of Nigeria’s innovation economy.

She noted that the state has deliberately invested in digital infrastructure, startup clusters, and policies that enable young entrepreneurs to thrive.

“Innovation is a public good that improves quality of life. Young people do not lack ideas; they need platforms, systems that are fair, accessible, and supportive,” she said.

The Commissioner revealed that Lagos received more than 9,000 applications for the YAI programme, from which 205 innovators were selected.

“The state will continue reducing regulatory barriers and expanding opportunities for startups,” she added.

Speaking on behalf of the Commissioner for Agriculture and Food Systems, Technical Assistant Akorede Adeboye outlined ongoing initiatives to support agricultural innovation in the state.

He cited the Lagos Agro-Innovation Club, the Agripreneur Project (LAP), and the Agrithon grant competitions, which have collectively trained over 5,000 young people and funded dozens of agritech solutions.

“These programmes are designed to grow agribusinesses, create jobs, and build a community of youths solving food security challenges,” he said.

During a panel session moderated by Adefunke Adewale, founders and innovation leaders discussed challenges facing small businesses, the importance of business intelligence, and the role of mentorship in scaling enterprises.

Product Owner and Head of Operations at the SME management platform Pearmonie, Nkiruka Achakpo, shared how digital business intelligence tools helped revive failing microenterprises.

She noted that young entrepreneurs struggle with inflation, inadequate infrastructure, and limited government grants.

“Even basic support like electricity would significantly reduce the burden on SMEs. Nigerian youths have unmatched drive, but they need encouragement,” she said.

Co-President of Ashoka Africa, Angelou Ezeilo, said Nigeria trails counterparts such as Kenya and South Africa in fintech and entrepreneurship indicators largely because of poor infrastructure and limited government support.

“Young innovators operate in the gaps in areas such as health, climate, gender, and economic inclusion, but they do not have the support they need. They need capital, mentorship, networks, and an enabling environment,” she said.

Ezeilo called for urgent reforms in digital infrastructure, power supply, transportation, and education, stressing that change making skills must be integrated into school curricula.

Chief Executive Officer of the edtech startup Dataleum, Bode Roberts, advocated for a state-level open innovation and data access policy to help startups collaborate with government agencies and access real-world problems they can solve.

“You cannot grow what you do not know. Data access will help build stronger capabilities and attract long-term investments,” he said.

Chief Executive Officer of Regxta Global Services, Rukayat Bello, appealed for more government focus on entrepreneurs at the bottom of the economic pyramid.

“Government must look at the grassroots, provide grants, and organize tech events for people in low-income communities,” she said.

This project is not just for high-class traders; it is for ordinary business people, including those selling fish and other everyday commodities,” Damara said.

He commended the state government for its resilience and focus in driving the project, adding that such commitment will benefit both the people of Cross River and investors alike.

  • Optiva Capital Partners urges Africans to invest smart, secure future

Optiva Capital Partners urges Africans to invest smart, secure future

As 2025 gradually winds down and a new year beckons, Optiva Capital Partners has called on entrepreneurs, professionals, and High Net Worth Individuals (HNIs) across Nigeria and the continent to plan intentionally for global access, wealth diversification, and family security in 2026 and beyond.

Speaking on the company’s outlook for 2026, at an interactive session with select Business Editors, Franklin Nechi, Chairman of Optiva Capital Partners, emphasised that true financial freedom in the modern world goes beyond local investments.

“Mobility is the new wealth,” he said. “For entrepreneurs and families, access to markets, education, healthcare, and security is the real measure of success. The coming year presents an opportunity for Africans to reposition globally, and Optiva is here to guide that journey with trusted, structured solutions.”

Optiva Capital Partners advised individuals and families to embrace global access planning – a long-term wealth and lifestyle strategy that integrates investment immigration, offshore asset diversification, and international education and healthcare options.

According to Nechi, for entrepreneurs and professionals, obtaining second citizenship or permanent residency through investment is no longer a luxury.

Optiva Capital Partners, he said, continues to lead in helping clients access reputable programs across Europe, the Caribbean, North America, and the Middle East – granting visa-free travel to over 140 countries, business mobility, and the ability to relocate or expand globally.

This means clients can attend global business meetings and trade fairs without visa delays; access international banking and investment platforms seamlessly; give their children and families a secure alternative home in times of crisis.

The Chairman of Optiva Capital Partners emphasised the need for wealth diversification in an era of volatile local currencies and fluctuating markets.

Through its global partnerships, Optiva provides access to real estate investments, structured funds, and asset-backed opportunities in stable economies like the UAE, Portugal, Greece, the UK, USA and the Caribbean.

“In 2026, investors must think beyond borders,” noted Franklin Nechi. “Our role is to help clients preserve and grow wealth across multiple jurisdictions – so that their money works for them, even when they sleep.”

Education and health remain two of the most powerful drivers of generational security. Optiva Capital he said, advises families to leverage second citizenship to gain access to world-class education for their children at domestic tuition rates in top universities; quality healthcare systems that offer affordable, timely, and life-saving services.

As part of its broader mission, Optiva Capital Partners has expanded beyond investment immigration into holistic wealth retention services.

The firm offers an integrated suite of financial solutions that help clients protect, grow, and optimize their assets across jurisdictions.

Nechi explained that the firm’s philosophy is rooted in four pillars – protection, growth, optimization, and enhancement.

“Protecting wealth means safeguarding it against currency fluctuations and market instability. Growth ensures that your money continues to earn returns through diversified investments.

“Optimization means putting your money to work efficiently, so it keeps generating value even when you retire, while enhancement ensures that clients’ investments are diversified and well distributed across asset classes, currencies, and jurisdictions.”

For African investors, Optiva’s message is clear: diversify. “Do not keep all your wealth in one market or currency,” Nechi advises. “If your expenses are in foreign currencies – tuition, healthcare, travel – then part of your income should also be earned in those currencies. That’s how you build long-term financial resilience.”

He added: “2026 is not a year to be reactive – it’s a year to be strategic,” concluded Nechi. “The families and entrepreneurs who act now will own tomorrow.”

Synergix Africa’s 2025 cohort 1 ends with N10m funding boost for young entrepreneurs

A spirit of triumph defined the atmosphere as Synergix Africa concluded the first edition of its 2025 Webinar Series, marking the end of an intensive programme that brought young entrepreneurs together in a journey of learning, resilience, and transformation.

What began quietly as a digital experiment had grown into a nationwide movement that blended virtual collaboration with real-world impact.

The initiative, which spanned several weeks, drew participants from across Nigeria, founders testing early ideas, small business owners seeking structure, and young creators eager to scale.

Over time, the online sessions on WhatsApp, Google Classroom, and Google Meet evolved into a vibrant community bound by ambition and shared struggle.

The structured curriculum exposed the cohort to key entrepreneurial pillars such as idea validation, branding, customer strategy, financial modelling, compliance, risk management, and pitch readiness.

Many participants recalled sleepless nights, difficult assignments, and moments when giving up seemed easier than pressing on. However, the collective drive to improve kept them going.

The grand finale, held in Abuja on November 20, 2025, brought emotional testimonies to the fore.

Participants spoke of juggling family responsibilities, navigating financial challenges, and finding support in peers they had never met physically. “This programme strengthened parts of me I thought were gone,” one finalist said.

A moment of reflection emerged during the opening speech by founder and CEO Mr Ken Nwokike, who addressed the cohort with visible emotion.

“You pushed through power cuts, personal doubt, and financial strain,” he said. “You proved that growth happens when discipline meets opportunity, and today you stand as the future leaders of African enterprise.”

The celebration reached its peak as the winners were unveiled. Ijeoma Chinechelum Onwuadi emerged overall winner, receiving a six-million-naira grant.

The first runner-up, Luqman Sulaiman Naibi, earned two million naira, while the second runner-up, Eloghosa Lester Oviahon, was also awarded two million naira. Cheers filled the hall as giant cheques went up and cameras lit the venue.

Participants reacted joyfully, with many expressing gratitude for the transformation they experienced.

“Synergix Africa gave me the clarity I didn’t know I was missing,” a participant said. “I joined hoping to survive the assignments, but I’m leaving with a sharper vision, new partners, and a confidence I thought I had lost.”

Synergix Africa’s founder and CEO, Mr Ken Nwokike, whose vision drives the programme, delivered an emotional opening address.

He paid tribute to participants who endured power cuts, personal setbacks, and financial strain to complete the cohort. He described the initiative as “a commitment to raising entrepreneurs who can think boldly and act with discipline.”

Nwokike’s philosophy emphasises accessible learning and community-driven mentorship. His experience as a seasoned entrepreneur shaped the curriculum, which deliberately prioritised real-world challenges over theory.

Many participants credited his leadership for the programme’s success. “Mr Nwokike believed in us at times we didn’t believe in ourselves,” another participant said.

Facilitators and programme managers received special recognition for their hands-on guidance, patience, and support.

According to the organisers, the team remained consistent even on days when nationwide challenges made participation difficult.

The post-event reception turned into what many described as a family reunion. Participants who had only interacted digitally embraced for the first time, shared food, took pictures, exchanged contacts, and strengthened newly formed partnerships.

Also, the official group photograph captured the significance of the moment: strangers turned collaborators, dreamers turned builders.

Every participant is expected to receive a digital certificate and automatic admission into the wider Synergix Africa Community, an ecosystem designed to offer continuous mentorship, networking, resources, and opportunities beyond the programme.

As testimonials continue to pour in, from refined business models to fresh partnerships and clearer entrepreneurial direction, the success of Cohort 1 is already shaping expectations for subsequent editions.

With Cohort 2 in motion and more programmes planned, Synergix Africa signals that its mission to empower emerging African founders is only gathering momentum.
