  • Trump’s move against Huawei suffers setback

United States President Donald Trump’s move against telecommunication giant Huawei has suffered a major setback.

European nations are considering using Huawei in building fifth-generation, or 5G, wireless networks.

The Donald Trump administration’s had earlier run an aggressive campaign to prevent countries from using Huawei and other Chinese telecommunications equipment in their next-generation wireless networks.

Trump had argued that Huawei and other Chinese telecom companies are a significant security threat.

But other countries say that the threat can be managed, in addition to Huawei’s denial of the claim.

A Washington Post report said Trump’s move stumbled because some of America’s closest allies rejected it.

    European countries divided

Top European countries are currently divided over the ban. Britain, Germany, India and the United Arab Emirates are among the countries signaling they are unlikely to back the American effort to entirely ban Huawei from building their 5G networks.

Some countries like Britain share the United States’ concerns, they argue that the security risks can be managed by closely scrutinising the company and its software.

With a majority rejecting Trump’s plan, their decisions are a blow to the Trump administration’s efforts to rein in Beijing’s economic and technological ambitions and to stop China from playing a central role in the next iteration of the internet.

American government officials are now looking for other ways to curb Huawei’s global rise without the cooperation of overseas allies, including possibly restricting American companies from supplying Huawei with key components that it needs to build 5G networks across the world.

“It is looking dicey. We are running out of runway,”  Mike Rogers, the former Republican congressman who led the House Intelligence Committee and who has long been a fierce critic of Huawei, reportedly said.

    Why America’s move failed?

The United States is not ready to admit defeat, but its campaign has suffered from what foreign officials say is a scolding approach and a lack of concrete evidence that Huawei poses a real risk.

It has also been hampered by a perception among European and Asian officials that President Trump may not be fully committed to the fight.

Moves to ban Huawei: Political or economic battle?

There is confusion over what may be the motive of America to ban Chinese companies, prominent among which is Huawei.

Mr. Trump has repeatedly undercut his own Justice Department, which unveiled sweeping criminal indictments against Huawei and its chief financial officer with accusations of fraud, sanctions evasion and obstruction of justice.

Trump has suggested that the charges could be dropped as part of a trade deal with China. The President previously eased penalties on another Chinese telecom firm accused of violating American sanctions, ZTE, after a personal appeal by President Xi Jinping of China.

Those moves have only deepened concerns that the administration’s fight against Huawei is not really about national security and instead reflects its political and economic ambitions.

European and Asian officials have complained privately that recent American intelligence briefings for allies did not share any sort of classified information that clearly demonstrated how the Chinese government used Huawei to steal information, according to people familiar with the discussions. European officials have told counterparts that if the United States has evidence the Chinese government has used its companies to do so, they should disclose it.

A senior European telecommunications executive said that no American officials had presented “actual facts” about China’s abuse of Huawei networks.

    Huawei Founder reacts

Ren Zhengfei, the founder of Huawei, in his reaction denied the US allegations.

He accused the United States of having political motivations in leveling criminal charges against the company and has said the firm does not spy for China.

Why it is difficult to ban Huawei

Unlike the United States, European wireless networks are much more dependent on Huawei, so banning its equipment would be far more consequential.

Many of the leading carriers, including Vodafone and Deutsche Telekom, use the company’s equipment, and a widespread ban would result in costly changes that executives have warned may delay the debut of 5G in the region.

Garrett Marquis, a spokesman for the National Security Council, said the United States continued to work “with our allies and like-minded partners to mitigate risk in the deployment of 5G and other communications infrastructure.”

“I’m not sure a ban is the solution,” said Caroline Nagtegaal, a member of European Parliament from the Netherlands who helped write a resolution on the cyber security risks posed by China that avoided calling for a Huawei ban. “We have to be very careful making a step like that.”

Many countries facing American pressure have not made any final decisions.

  • FG on course with Digital Switch Over implantation

The Federal Government has resolved the brewing crisis threatening the implementation of the Digital Switch Over (DSO) from analogue television broadcasts in the country.

The National Security Adviser (NSA), Babagana Monguno, had on Thursday summoned the critical stakeholders in the DSO to a meeting where the contentious issues involved were discussed and resolved.

The NSA had told the stakeholders the Federal Government was determined to uphold its policy on DSO and also ensuring that private investment in the Nigerian economy was not discouraged.

The meeting, which lasted about three hours, witnessed the diplomatic negotiation and consensus building capacity of the NSA that facilitated a resolution of the five year old dispute, which interrupted smooth implementation of the DSO and twice led to missing set deadlines.

The Federal Government policy on DSO was thereby protected from legal interpretation in law courts while also salvaging solid private investment in the nation’s economy and attendant jobs created through the investment from uncertainty and jeopardy.

At the meeting were Senator Elect and Chairman of the Board of NBC, Ikra Bilbis, DG NBC, Ishaq Modibbo Kawu, the CEO of Details Nigeria Limited, operators of Goth, John Ugbe and Chairman, Pinnacle Communications Limited, Sir Lucky Omoluwa whose efforts to make the meeting possible was acknowledged by the NSA, and COO of Pinnacle Communications Limited, Dipo Onifade.

  • Facebook’s WhatsApp limits users to five text forwards to curb rumours

Facebook Inc’s (FB.O) WhatsApp is limiting worldwide the number of times a user can forward a message to five, starting on Monday, the popular messaging service looks to fight “misinformation and rumours”, company executives said on Monday.

Previously, a WhatsApp user could forward a message to 20 individuals or groups.

The limit of five is in expansion of a measure WhatsApp put in place in India in July after the spread of rumours on social media led to killings and lynching attempts.

“We’re imposing a limit of five messages all over the world as of today,” Victoria Grand, Vice President for Policy and Communications at WhatsApp, said at an event in the Indonesian capital.

WhatsApp, which has around 1.5 billion users, has been trying to find ways to stop misuse of the app.

This followed global concern that the platform was being used to spread fake news, manipulated photos, videos without context, and audio hoaxes, with no way to monitor their origin or full reach.

The messaging service became part of the political battleground in Brazil’s presidential election on Oct., 2019, with far-right candidate Jair Bolsonaro facing claims of using the app to spread falsehoods related to his main opponent.

Bolsonaro, who ended up coasting to victory, has denied the charges.

The messaging app was also used to mobilise support for a massive truckers strike in Brazil during May 2018.

The truckers strike blocked the country’s main roadways for about 10 days and hampered everything from fuel deliveries to gas stations to shipments of commodities at ports.

The app’s end-to-end encryption allows groups of hundreds of users to exchange texts, photos and video beyond the oversight of independent fact checkers or even the platform itself.

WhatsApp will roll out an update to activate the new forward limit, starting on Monday, WhatsApp’s head of communications Carl Woog said.

Users of devices running Google’s Android system will receive the update first, followed by users of Apple Inc’s (AAPL.O) iOS. (Reuters/NAN)

  • 2019: Firm develops app to monitor elections

Kaduna based computer firm, Hephzibah Integrated Technologies Ltd, has developed an application that will help in monitoring and tracking order of activities during and voting process during the 2019 general elections.

Managing Director/CEO of Hephzibah Integrated Technologies Ltd, Engineer Clement O. Obomighe disclosed this when unveiling the application at a press briefing in Kaduna.

He said the application was developed to ensure that electioneering procedures as outlined by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) is been observed diligently at every polling unit across the country.

According to him, “Our application cannot enforce the law, but can expose breach of the law,” said Obomighe.

He explained, that the application will make statistics on the conduct of elections very easy and instant, as it works with any android or IOS phone.

Obomighe added, that his company has been seeking active ways to develop APPs to support government policies, part of which includes the conduct of free and credible elections.

According to him, “the application was developed from what somebody muted to us, by an observer group which approached us. But, for some reasons they chickened out and we went through sponsoring it from the scratch.

“We noticed that in the past, capturing activities during cities was haphazard. This app will make it well managed, well captured according to INEC order.

“We had developed it according to 2015 order of activities. When the new INEC chairman came and changed it, we changed it again. We then went back to the drawing board to make it flexible.

“Nobody knows if officials at any polling unity had omitted any activity. There is a process, if missed it should be captured by the election monitors, polling unit by polling unit.

“Even after the polling unit, at the collation centre there are procedures which must be followed. When procedures are not followed, it should be captured by the monitors. Not following procedures, gives room for rigging.

“We decided to present the APP to the public, Nigerians so they can see it. That’s why we are here today. We are not oblivious of the fact that we may be behind time ahead of the general elections, but are optimistic that it will help.

On why INEC has not adopted the application, he said: “the electoral commission were approached but they couldn’t adopt it, because they don’t know if we are sponsored by a political party or candidate. But, on the contrary, our application is not to spite INEC; we developed it to ensure credibility of the election process.

“We will be monitoring the data, If we notice any increase, we will increase database size, we have signed agreement with cloud storage which increases, we have paid upfront for that.

Speaking on how the application would work, Obomighe said, they have set up a system that helps to generate report format.

“Reports produced by observers or party agents can be substantiated with evidence which can serve as forensic evidence in courts,” he said adding that they decided to create definite report format.

“Different accurate statistical facts can be gotten from a simple query of data base. Party agents or observers presence and efforts can be monitored. The app is geo locationally locked and can’t be used in another polling unit.

“The app has two interfaces; mobile interface and administrative interface,” he informed.
