Lagos, others seal waste management deal

The Lagos State government over the weekend signed three separate Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) with various companies.

This is as the 11th Lagos International Climate Change Summit climaxed with break out and panel sessions on thematic areas featuring experts.

Addressing the investors and delegates at the Continental Hotel, Victoria Island, Commissioner for the Environment and Water Resources, Mr Tokunbo Wahab stated that the state government is determined to move from linear waste management (pick and dump) to conversion of waste to wealth which is more sustainable.

He said the new MoUs represent a new vista in the quest of the state to reduce the quantum of waste that finally gets to the various landfill sites.

Wahab explained that the proposition from one of the companies, HAK Waste Limited is to establish a circular beverage container bottle recycling & recovery through a deposit refund system hinged on Extended Producer’s Responsibility mechanism (EPRM).

He added that the new proposal is an investor’s confidence  in the EPRM policy of the state on waste reduction and would also involve the establishment of a packaging circularity ecosystem.

Wahab explained that another of the MoU will bring about a first of its kind establishment of a world class tyre collection and recycling of end-of-life tyres in the state.

He said: “Haggai Logistics Limited – proposes to Build a first of its kind tyre recycling plant,  responsible for processing end-of-life tyres via a fully automated Waste Tyre Recycling Factory and deployment of environmentally sound recycling technologies.”

The third of the MoU, according to the Commissioner,  is from Mondo 4 Africa, proposing to convert non-recyclable plastic waste into sustainable fuel and other valuable resources through environmentally friendly technology.

He added that the state is determined to continually sensitize the residents to cultivate the habits of waste sorting from the source (home) and always bear in mind that waste is a resource and not a waste.

“We are trying to make people change the culture of seeing waste as a waste but waste as resource. We are also trying to shift their mindset from the practice that have been in use for decades”

He stressed that the government is trying its possible best in addressing these key issues simultaneously for a proper intervention financially and agreed on their price.

He emphasized that what the government is speaking to is proper financing and how to access it  constantly as well as speaking to the vulnerabilities of Lagos been a coastal state.

Speaking further, the Managing Director of Lagos Waste Management Authority (LAWMA), Dr Muyiwa Gbadegesin said the new initiative is part of the organisation’s quest to improve the state’s environment.

He explained that the state government or LAWMA alone cannot be saddled with the responsibility of managing the quantum of daily generated solid waste in the state, but needs partnership of the private sector to turn waste into a resource and wealth.

In their response, the companies’ executives expressed their appreciation and willingness to work with the state government in order to actualize the waste to wealth initiative of the state

The Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) of the United Nations has applauded the Minister of Marine and Blue Economy, Adegboyega Oyetola, for his strengthened commitment to increasing Nigeria’s fish production and advancing sustainable development within the nation’s blue economy.

Gadain praised the Ministry for developing the National Policy on Marine and Blue Economy, describing it as a critical roadmap for the sustainable harnessing of Nigeria’s marine resources.

He noted that the UN agency was glad to have contributed to the fisheries and aquaculture chapter of the policy.

Responding, Dr Oyetola expressed appreciation for FAO’s long-standing partnership and reiterated the Ministry’s determination to expand domestic fish production, reduce dependence on importation, and stimulate economic growth.

“We value FAO’s consistent technical input and cooperation. Nigeria has the capacity to meet its own fish demand, and our goal is to close the production gaps that have forced us to rely on importation for decades,” the Minister said.

  • Coalition demands Senate confirmation of NERC chairman nominee

Coalition demands Senate confirmation of NERC chairman nominee

A coalition of Civil Society Organisations (CSOs) has called on the Senate to confirm Engr. Abdullahi Ramat as Chairman of the Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission (NERC) to enable the implementation of reforms in the power sector under President Bola Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda.

The group led by Comrades Danesi Momoh Prince and Igwe Ude-Umanta, urged President Tinubu to intervene decisively to ensure Ramat’s confirmation without further delay, describing the situation as a test of his administration’s commitment to transparency and reform in the electricity sector.

Speaking at a press conference in Abuja on Monday, the coalition hailed Ramat as a reform-driven professional with extensive experience in electrical engineering, telecommunications, and strategic management.

“He is a perfect fit for the chairmanship of NERC. His confirmation is critical to restoring confidence in the power sector and accelerating the reforms that have eluded previous administrations,” the coalition stated.

According to them, the Senate Committee on Power, chaired by Senator Enyinnaya Abaribe, had completed its screening and presented Ramat alongside two nominees — Mr. Abubakar Yusuf and Mr. Fouad Olayinka Animashaun — for confirmation since October 22, 2025 but the Senate is yet to take action.

Describing the situation as “an injustice that amounts to political sabotage,” the coalition demanded that the Senate leadership explain the reasons for the delay or risk nationwide protests at the National Assembly and NERC offices if confirmation is not concluded within 48 hours.

“Silence in the face of injustice amounts to complicity. The Senate has chosen to constitute a public obstacle to the reform agenda of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, especially in the power sector,” the statement read.

The coalition alleged that some lawmakers were using the confirmation process to pursue regional and political influence, warning that such “political manipulation of key appointments” undermines governance and public trust.

“The power needs of Nigerians are too urgent to allow this internal sabotage to continue unchecked. This delay is not due to any lack of merit but the political machinations of a few powerful individuals,” they added.

They described Engr. Ramat — a Fellow of the Council for the Regulation of Engineering in Nigeria (COREN), Harvard alumnus, pioneer Managing Director of the Kano State Metropolitan Agency (KASMA), and current Director of AG Ramat Global Electrical/Electronic Ltd — as a competent technocrat with the capacity to drive lasting reforms in the energy sector.

The coalition concluded by warning that politicising such a critical regulatory position poses a serious risk to Nigeria’s economic growth and energy stability.

“Of all sectors, the power sector should be spared the politics of selfish interest. Nigerians are tired of politics being played with everything, including electricity,” the group stated.

…NYSC DG urges youth to embrace agribusiness

The Leventis Foundation Nigeria has said that 90 corps members have undergone agribusiness training and internship across its schools in the country.

The Executive Director of the Foundation, Hope Usieta, said this in Abuja during the third edition of the Agricultural Youths Summit organised in collaboration with the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC).

Usieta said that 40 corps members had already completed the training, while 50 were presently undergoing the same training in its LFN schools.

He stated, “I commend LFN’s partnership with NYSC through its Skills Acquisition and Entrepreneurship Department (SAED) because it has provided us with the opportunity to reach out to more youths. Through the LFN-SAED partnership, 40 corps members have undergone agribusiness training and internship across LFN’s schools, and about 50 are currently undergoing agribusiness training across Leventis Foundation Nigeria training schools.”

He added, “As you may be aware, Leventis Foundation is the foremost organization dedicated to sustainable agriculture and youth development through the training offered to youths and farmers across Nigeria in various aspects of agriculture and agribusiness across our 6 training centers.

“Despite various interventions in the agricultural sector, there’s no doubt that challenges still abound. Hence, there’s a critical need to do more to advance the needed solutions.

“One of such challenges is the limited access to Agri finance experienced by small holder farmers and their preparedness to receive finances.

“For Nigeria, with a share of agricultural gross domestic product, raising agricultural investment for increasing productivity and ensuring food security constitutes an important policy instrument for meeting the SDGs.”

The Director-General of NYSC, Brigadier General Olakunle Nafiu, urged Nigerian youths to embrace agribusiness as a prerequisite to ending the country’s food insecurity and unemployment.

Nafiu, who was represented by the Director, Ventures Management at NYSC, Abe Dankaro, said the event comes at a critical time when Nigeria is grappling with both high youth unemployment and rising food security concerns.

According to him, the agricultural sector presents huge opportunities for innovation, job creation, and national development—particularly when driven by the energy and creativity of young Nigerians.

He stated, “Nigeria is confronted with the dual challenge of high youth unemployment and growing concerns over food security. Yet, in every challenge lies an opportunity, and that opportunity is agribusiness—a sector rich in potential but in need of young minds to drive its transformation.”

He noted that NYSC’s collaboration with Leventis has helped build a new generation of “agripreneurs” equipped not only for farming but also for entrepreneurship.

“This is not just about farming; it is about building a generation of self-reliant, job-creating, and economically empowered youths who will take agriculture to new heights of innovation and enterprise.

“See yourselves not as job seekers, but as nation builders armed with knowledge, resilience, and purpose,” he stated.

On his part, the Chairman of LFN, Ahmed Manti, emphasised the need for improved access to agricultural financing to support smallholder farmers and scale youth-led agribusinesses in the country.

He said, “One of the major challenges we continue to observe is limited access to agri-financing and the preparedness of smallholder farmers to secure such funding,” he said. “Strengthening investment in agriculture is a key policy tool for boosting productivity and achieving food security in line with the Sustainable Development Goals.

“We believe this summit will continue to strengthen the agricultural ecosystem and drive economic development.”
