    Campus writers honour Olumba Olumba

    Association of Campus Writers, University of Calabar (UNICAL) chapter, has honoured the leader of the Brotherhood of the Cross and Star (BCS), Olumba Olumba Obu. The Embodiment of Love award was presented to the spiritual leader at the BCS headquarters located at Ambo Street, Calabar, Cross River State.

    Speaking during the presentation, Charles Udenze, one of the students, stated that the award was reserved for people, who distinguished themselves in humanitarian services. He noted that Obu was found worthy for the 2012 edition of award in view of his philanthropic exercise to humanity.

    According to him, Obu offered scholarships to youths and donated relief materials to victims of natural and artificial disasters, which he said were a testimony of the show of love to humanity by the spiritual leader.

    The campus writers acknowledged Obu’s programmes on the mass media, which is aimed at preaching the need for all to embrace peace and live harmoniously.

    The chief protocol officer, Barrister Sam Jack, who received the award on behalf of Obu, praised the students for their thoughtfulness. He thanked them for finding a priest worthy of the award.

    Emmanuel Shebbs, member of the group, said the circular shape of the award plaque signified the universe, adding that OOO inscription on it showed unique love found in the brotherhood.

    At the presentation were Isaac Mensah, Augustine Shebbs, Davidson Maduagwu, Peter Kingsley, Joy Riman and Frank Ejeagbasi.

    Varsity begins sandwich, diploma courses

    The University of Nigeria, Nsukka (UNN) has announced the re-introduction of evening degree and diploma programmes of the institution. The programmes, which will be held in Alvan Ikoku College of Education Owerri and Nwafor Orizu College of Education, Nsugbe were re-introduced for workers, who may want to further their education.

    According to a statement by the institution, the entry requirements were the same as those for the regular degree and direct entry level. Purchase of application forms, which started on January 25, is expected to end on the last week of April.

    The release also advised interested candidates to complete the application forms with two stamped and self-addressed envelopes, photocopies of credentials, receipt issued on purchase and other relevant documents, which must be returned to the Registrar, Sandwich and Evening Programmes Unit, UNN.

    In another development, the university has commenced its first semester examination for regular programmes. While exams have already begun in faculties such as Social Sciences, Physical Sciences, Biological Sciences, departments in Faculty of Arts were yet to get their timetable by the time of filing report.

    Some freshers in Social Science complained about inadequate examination time and reading in the darkness.

    ThankGod Ugwuanyi, a final year student of Mass Communication, urged his colleagues to remain focused while wishing them success in their exams.

    Law students donate gadgets to faculty

    The management of Adekunle Ajasin University, Akungba-Akoko (AAUA), has hailed the outgoing of executive members of the Law Students’ Society (LSS) of the institution for rendering quality leadership to their fellow students.

    The management made the commendation last Monday at the presentation of eight new 1.5 HP split unit air conditioners and eight 5,000 watts Automatic Voltage Regulators donated to the Faculty of Law by the outgoing members of the society.

    Receiving gadgets, which were meant for the faculty’s lecture rooms, the Vice-Chancellor, Prof Femi Mimiko, who was represented by the Dean of Students’ Affairs, Prof Oluyemisi Adebowale, said: “We want to appreciate the effort of the Law Students’ Society for making the university conducive for learning.”

    Prof Mimiko, who noted that the students, through the gesture, had added value to the system out of their own volition, said: “It is remarkable to find students coming together to think of how to make life more comfortable for those who will come after them.” He said members of the society had set the pace for the prospective students’ leaders to follow and surpass. The VC prayed that God grant the students success in their future endeavours.

    The Registrar, Mr Bamidele Olotu, in his remark, noted that the donation was a confirmation that students in the faculty were known for noble activities, adding: “we are always proud of you.” Olotu said the students had proved their nobility and diligence.

    The Acting Dean of the faculty, Barrister Tajudeen Ibrahim, said the gesture was unprecedented in the faculty. He said the era of students expecting the authorities to provide all facilities had gone, saying the donation was a confirmation that students were stakeholders in building of 21st century institution. The Dean thanked the management for giving necessary support to the faculty.

    In his speech, the outgoing president of the society, Oladimeji Oyesusi, disclosed that the appliances were worth N740,000, adding that the initiative was informed by the desire to give back to the university that impacted knowledge on them.

    IBB varsity hosts English students’ forum

    Ibrahim Badamasi Babangida University (IBBU), Lapai, has hosted students of the English Language and Literacy Studies from institutions in the northern part of the country. The programme was a forum of the leaders of the Association of Students of English and Literacy Studies (NASELS).

    The forum, which lasted from three days, drew delegates from institutions such as Ahmadu Bello University (ABU), Zaria, University of Jos (UNIJOS), Kaduna State University (KADSU), Gombe State University (GSU) and Umaru Musa Yardua University (UMYU), Katsina among others.

    The forum was held to raise literary consciousness among the students of English in the North and to ensure that the North remained incorporated in the national body of the association. The students discussed various topics including the International Conference of Students of English and Literary Studies (ICOSELS), which was held last week in Delta State University (DELSU), Abraka.

    The national president of the association, Izuchuwkwu Akwarandu, praised the leadership of the school, department and the association for hosting the forum. The students later paid a courtesy visit to the office of head of English department, Dr Margaret Agu.

    Mr Agu thanked the participants for the visit, promising her commitment to the activities of the association. She advised the students not to be preoccupied with unionism, saying they must also remember their academic engagements.

    The IBBU president of NASELS, Gideon Oyedeji, appreciated the institution management for equipping students with the prowess to compete with peers from other institutions. He urged participants to put in their best to foster national integration through their service to humanity.

    Olabisi Onabanjo Univeristy (OOU), Ago-Iwoye, Ogun State, will be set aglow with festivities on February 28. A campus-based Spartan Entertainment Group will be hosting students in its annual social festival tagged “Spartans mask party”.

    Highlights of the ceremony, which is sponsored by Acada magazine, Modelling Academy and Nigezie, will feature dance contest, musical performance and fashion exhibition among others.

    A statement by the group’s media committee said students from other tertiary institutions, fashion designers and upcoming artists are expected to grace the ceremony.

    UNN graduate wins NLNG Literature Prize

    An alumnus of the University of Nigeria, Nsukka (UNN), Chika Unigwe, has won the 2012 Nigeria Prize for Literature Award organised by Nigerian Liquefied Natural Gas (NLNG). Her book titled On black sisters’ street, which detailed the trans-Atlantic prostitution, was adjudged the best literature book in the 2012 edition of the award.

    The award was presented to Unigwe at the Princess Alexandra Auditorium and Theatre, UNN, at a public ceremony organised by the NLNG in conjunction with the university.

    Speaking the Vice-Chancellor, Prof Bartho Okolo, praised NLNG for hosting the event in the alma mater of the awardee. He said alumni of the university had distinguished themselves in various fields of human endeavour, citing the achievements of Prof Dora Akunyili and Dr Obiageli Ezekwesili among others.

    Prof Okolo, who was represented by his deputy on Academic, Prof Isaac Asuzu, said students of the institution would draw inspiration from the feat of Unigwe, urging female undergraduates to tow the footsteps of the likes of Akunyili and Unigwe to achieve greatness.

    The Governor of Anambra State, Mr Peter Obi, who was at the event, said Unigwe’s achievement was a celebration of the change, which had started in Nigeria. He said the nation was passing through bad times because it had spent its time and resources celebrating criminality and rascality, while the real people who were supposed to be celebrated were left unsung.

    Obi promised to donate a centre for creative writing in his state, saying it was his belief that the centre would create and nurture future writers. He enjoined indigenes of Anambra State to strive for excellence in their endeavour.

    The Managing Director of the NLNG, Mr Babs Omotowa, appreciated the authorities of the UNN for allowing the body to partner with it in hosting the event. He noted that the choice to host the celebration at the UNN was based on the fact that the winner of the literature prize, Unigwe, and the runner up, Ngozi Achebe, were both graduates of the university.

    Omotowa noted that NLNG instituted the award to discover role models for the youth. “This ceremony serves to assure all of us that we have not been completely overrun by the rampaging mediocrity running in our land,” he said

    Unigwe described the feat as “discovering magic”. She thanked lecturers, who taught her, for laying the foundation in creative writing, saying she was happy to join the league of winners of the prestigious NLNG award.

    Students urge management to tighten security

    Students of the University of Ilorin (UNILORIN) have cried out to the management over theft incidents at the university’s main library and Computer-based Test (CBT) centres. Students have lost their bags, laptops, wallets, mobile phones and other personal effects at the facilities since first semester exam commenced.

    Students complained that stealing was particularly rampant at the CBT centres, which they said was no longer safe for them to keep items barred from taking into the hall during exam. “Stealing of bags is not restricted to only CBT centres; the thieves also go to the university library to steal bags of students dropped in the portal room,” a 300-Level student complained.

    A 300-Level Geography and Environmental Management student, whose bag was stolen at the CBT centre last Thursday, spoke to CAMPUSLIFE. She said: “My bag was stolen with my friends’ bags when we went into the CBT centre for exam. My course mates and I kept our mobile phones in my bag when we were ready to go in. Before we came out, the bag was nowhere to be found. My wallet, my laptop and the two note books were in the bag.”

    Some of the victims urged the management to strengthen security on the campus, especially during the examination period. The students also wanted management to deploy security personnel to the affected centres to check the theft.

    FCE students docked for stealing laptop

    Four Federal College of Education, Yaba (YabaTech) students were yesterday arraigned before a Yaba Magistrates’ Court, Lagos, for allegedly stealing a laptop and blackberry phone valued N85, 000.

    The defendants, Olutobi Adejoba, 18, Raseed Quadri, 24, Olajide Iwagun, 20 and Idris Azeez, 18, are facing a three count charge of conspiracy and stealing before Magistrate Adekorede Ajibade.

    Prosecuting Assistant Superintendent of Police, Felix Ifijen, told the court that the defendants stole from another student, one Taiwo Idowu.

    He said: “The defendants committed the offence on February 6, within the premises of Federal College of Education, Plot 13, Akoka road, Yaba.

    “The four defendants had kept a tab on the complainant for a while, and conspired among themselves to steal from him,

    “They stole his IBT Thinkpad computer and his blackberry phone, all valued N85,000.”

    Thr alleged offence was said to have contravened Sections 409, 285, 326 of the Criminal Laws of Lagos.

    Ajibade granted the defendants bail in of N50,000 with one surety each in like sum.

    She adjourned the case to February 28.

    Six Nigerian students have been awarded post-graduate scholarships to study in South Korea by the Republic of Korea International Cooperation Agency (KOICA). According to Mr Sang Jung, Chief Resident Representative at the agency’s office in Abuja, the students who were selected from the six geo-political zones in the country will be resume in top Korean institutions next month.

    Jung said the scholarships would provide the opportunity for the students to learn from Korea’s experience in poverty reduction and socio-economic development.

    He added that KOICA is an agency of the Korean government responsible for the delivery of grants and technical cooperation programmes in developing countries and that 16 Nigerian students had benefited from the scheme in the last five years.

    FUNAAB plans free education for less privileged students The Vice-Chancellor of the Federal University of Agriculture, Abeokuta(FUNAAB), Professor Olusola Bandele Oyewole has stressed the need for the University to have a policy that will enable less privileged students go through school without hassles.

    Professor Oyewole who spoke at a meeting with students of the institution last week at the Tony Anenih Hall harped on the importance of such policies that will reduce the burdens of less privileged students and make them focus on their studies.

    The V.C said: “it is high time for the University to give the less privilege students special consideration in the area of logistics, financial assistance, employment,

    participation in extra-curricular activities, among others”.

    He added that, that the management is considering setting up a Trust Fund to assist the less privilege students as it is done in other countries.

    Students of Ahmadu Bello University (ABU), Zaria, have been advised to shun violence and other cats capable of disrupting peace on the campus and tarnishing the image of the institution.

    The advice was given by the Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Abdullahi Mustangs last Friday during the matrices ceremony for the 6,000 students admitted for the 2012/2013 academic session. The event held at the main in Samaru, Zaria.

    Mustapha, who was represented by the Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Administration), Prof. Na’iya Sada, said the advice became necessary in view of the current security challenges in the country.

    He said peace was critical to success and as such the university community required peace to run stable academic calendar.

    The vice-chancellor urged the new students to make judicious use of the unique opportunity to learn and become useful to themselves, their families and the society.

    “Let me use this medium to congratulate you for securing admission into this prestigious university because many wished to be here but were not opportune.

    “I urge you to desist from all forms of social vices that will tamper with your educational career, these vices are in no doubt inimical to your future success,”

    Mustapha said.
