EMPAN, partners train 50 Lagos mechanics on electric mobility skills

The Electric Mobility Promoters Association of Nigeria (EMPAN), in partnership with Siemens Foundation and AfricanEV, has launched a groundbreaking training programme to equip roadside mechanics with the skills to repair and maintain electric tricycles (Keke) and motorcycles (Okada).

The initiative was unveiled at the “E-Mobility Connect” event held at the UNILAG Design Studio, Lagos. EMPAN President, Dayo Adesina, described the programme as a milestone for Nigeria’s transport sector, noting that the first cohort of 50 roadside mechanics had completed their training.

“We received over 100 applications but had to screen based on capacity. Each cohort has 25 participants,” Adesina said, adding that the training featured practical sessions on diagnosing faults, repairing electric drivetrains, and ensuring safety standards.

The programme also digitally maps participants with their workshop details, enabling commuters and stakeholders to easily locate certified technicians across Lagos.

Adesina expressed confidence that Nigeria is ready for the electric vehicle revolution despite infrastructural challenges, urging policymakers to invest in charging infrastructure, reduce import duties, and provide concessionary loans to accelerate adoption.

Sebastian Gruss of the Siemens Foundation commended the initiative, stressing that it tackles one of the biggest barriers to e-mobility adoption — the lack of reliable repair and maintenance services.

  • Patriots urge Nigerians to renew mindset, reclaim national pride

Patriots urge Nigerians to renew mindset, reclaim national pride

At a gathering organised by Borngreat Nations, speakers called on Nigerians to change the negative narrative about the country and embrace a renewed mindset to unlock its vast potential and restore its former glory.

Convener of the event, Paul B. Orizu, expressed his deep love for Nigeria and a desire to shift the prevailing negative discourse surrounding the nation.

“Nigeria is the only country we have at this moment, and we should try our best possible to make it better instead of destroying the nation,” Orizu said.

He highlighted Nigeria’s historical achievements, including the Benin Moat—described as the largest man-made structure on earth built without technology—as evidence of the country’s past greatness.

He further warned against the negative emotions affecting Nigerians’ collective psyche, noting that “the way we talk, the way we speak, we are so much negative and compassionate about this nation, and it is affecting the emotional psyche of the citizens.”

He urged Nigerians to redefine and refine their national identity, stating, “It is only what is defined that can be refined.”

Activist, Dr. Charles Apoki spoke about the power of perception and identity, describing Nigeria’s reputation as a “dog that is neutral until you give it a name, and it will start answering that name.”

He argued that a deliberate effort has been made to tarnish Nigeria’s image globally, but Nigerians must reject such labels.

“No weapon formed against you shall prosper,” he quoted, encouraging a strong, positive self-image.

Apoki pointed to the global achievements of Nigerians, including successes in sports, academia, and business, to illustrate the country’s vast potential. He asserted that changing the internal narrative would eventually lead to global recognition and respect.

“The narrative will change our actions,” he said.

He recalled Nigeria’s past economic strength, highlighting times when the country loaned money to the International Monetary Fund and to South Korea, now a global technology leader.

Dr. Hamzat Abiodun emphasised the necessity of a renewed mindset as a foundation for national transformation. “Narrative without a renewed mind cannot yield any result,” he said, stressing that many Nigerians continue to vote based on tribal, religious, or personal interests rather than national progress.

He added, “The change must start from within,” and only with a positive mindset can Nigerians expect better leadership and a better country.

Dr. Afoke Orivry on her part, highlighted the media’s crucial role in shaping Nigeria’s identity and called on journalists to tell authentic, balanced stories that reflect both the nation’s challenges and its successes. She assured that the conversation sparked at the event would continue, with plans to engage government officials and the public through various platforms.

When asked about communicating the event’s outcomes to the government, Orivry said, “The media are here. You are going to write reports and then there is going to be a continuation of the conversation. It’s not going to stop.” She emphasised the importance of ongoing dialogue to ensure the message reaches policymakers.

The speakers collectively stressed the need for Nigerians to embrace a citizen movement that transcends political and tribal divisions. Engr. Orizu urged Nigerians to “light your little candle where there is darkness,” underscoring that political leaders represent only a small fraction of the nation’s capacity for change.

“We should start in a Greek philosophy of politics. You have idiots, tribalists, and citizens. Citizens are those who take the interest of the nation first,” he explained.

The event further emphasised Nigeria’s abundant human capital and the importance of resetting the national mindset.

Orizu said, “Nigeria is Zion, and I will behave like a citizen,” affirming his belief that the country can overcome its challenges by embracing unity, pride, and a positive narrative.

Nine die in multiple road crashes in Delta

Fatal road crashes at the Ogwashi-Uku Junction in Delta State have brought tragic consequences, with nine lives lost and numerous injuries resulting from a sequence of events that escalated dramatically.

It was gathered yesterday that the first vehicle accident resulted in the death of two individuals.

A speeding Toyota Sienna had reportedly collided with onlookers and sympathisers who had gathered to assist, allegedly leading to the deaths of an additional seven people.

Several individuals were said to have sustained varying degrees of injuries, primarily among those present at the scene.

Residents of the community perceived the incident as avoidable but for existing lapses in traffic management.

They therefore called for improved regulations and enforcement related to road safety practices.

They contended that the recent crashes had reignited discussions about the need for better traffic control and road safety measures in the state to prevent future occurrences and protect lives.

“If there were proper traffic management and timely intervention, this wouldn’t have escalated into such a calamity,” one eyewitness claimed.

Some eyewitnesses, including a clergyman, identified simply as Rev. Kingsley, confirmed the accident.

According to him, he encountered the scene at about 9:30 p.m. while returning to Ogwashi-Uku from Asaba, the state capital, where he had gone to minister.

He described the crashes as gruesome, stating that blood from the victims’ bodies stained the ground.

Community leaders and motorists have also called on the Delta State Government, the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC), and other relevant agencies to urgently implement stricter traffic regulations, provide adequate signage at busy junctions, and ensure rapid response units are stationed in accident-prone areas to prevent further tragedies.

As families mourn their loved ones, the Ogwashi-Uku crash stands as a painful reminder of the consequences of reckless driving and weak safety enforcement.

When contacted, the Delta State Sector Public Enlightenment Officer, Superintendent Route Commander (SRC) Patrick Obiagbo, said, “The accident we know of happened between Ogwashi-Uku and Issele-Azagba involving a truck and transporter’s vehicle.”

Obiagbo emphasised that unless there was a separate, unreported crash elsewhere, the FRSC had no record of any deaths in the Ogwashi-Uku accident.

  • NILDS, NJI seek partnership on capacity building for lawmakers, judicial officers

NILDS, NJI seek partnership on capacity building for lawmakers, judicial officers

The National Institute for Legislative and Democratic Studies (NILDS) and the National Judicial Institute (NJI) have agreed to collaborate in enhancing their roles as training arms of the Legislature and Judiciary.

At a meeting in Abuja on Friday, both bodies inaugurated a nine-member joint committee to explore areas of cooperation in capacity building, research, and knowledge-sharing.

NILDS Director-General, Prof. Abubakar Sulaiman, who received NJI Administrator, Hon. Justice Babatunde Adejumo, said the synergy would strengthen the training of lawmakers and judicial officers.

He added that NILDS could support advocacy roles for NJI, while benefiting from NJI’s legal expertise in training legislators.

Sulaiman said, “The mandate of our institute is that it is the research wing of the legislature and democratic actors in Nigeria and West Africa. The only legally-backed body to train our lawmakers and nurture their skills.

“We also train political parties, Non-Governmental Organisations, Civil Society Organisations (CSOs), and the media.

“We have been providing all manner of assistance, especially when it comes to legislation. This is the leading institute in West Africa today in that regard, and we remain the ladder on which the parliament stands.”

Sulaiman added that a lot could be achieved through the synergy in guiding some of the “conflicting pronouncements” by our courts through equipping judicial officers with the requisite skills to avoid missteps.

He further stated that a better-equipped NJI could become the hub for the training of judicial officers from across Africa, thereby saving the nation the scarce resources spent on foreign training in places like Harvard and Oxford.

“So, in this area, the NJI can speak out, they can guide, they can advise.

We need to share knowledge even in the training we give to our clients.

“We also run Master’s and Ph.D programmes in NILDS, and we have resource persons and lecturers from many other bodies.

“We can’t be wasting resources going to Harvard all the time. NJI can fit in here and make Nigeria the place other African judges can come to be trained”, the DG of NILDS said.

Earlier, Hon. Justice Adejumo shared the same views as Sulaiman, agreeing that both institutions “have a lot to learn from each other”, despite executing different mandates.

According to the former President of the National Industrial Court of Nigeria (NICN), the ever-evolving nature of law means that judicial officers also must always be a step ahead by honing their skills.

“We need sister agencies like NILDS to achieve our training objectives. So, I am here to understudy, learn from you, and synergise. You may need our support too, and so on.

“NILDs is one of those few institutes we need to collaborate with to meet our own objectives”, Adejumo said.

FG reaffirms commitment to reviving Ajaokuta Steel

The Minister of Steel Development, Prince Shuaibu Audu Abubakar, has restated President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s administration’s commitment to revitalising Nigeria’s steel sector, with particular focus on the resuscitation and full operationalisation of Ajaokuta Steel Company Limited (ASCL).

His remarks came in response to recent media reports quoting Dangote Group Chairman, Alhaji Aliko Dangote, as expressing doubts about the viability of the Ajaokuta Steel Plant due to changes in technology.

In a statement signed by the Ministry’s Head of Press and Public Relations, Salamatu Jibaniya, the Minister stressed that the federal government remains unwavering in its resolve to bring the company to life.

He disclosed that a comprehensive technical and financial audit of the plant is currently underway to ensure all decisions taken are transparent, data-driven, and in the best interest of the nation.

The statement read, “The attention of the Federal Ministry of Steel Development has been drawn to recent media reports regarding the future of the Ajaokuta Steel Company Limited (ASCL).

“While we note the concerns expressed, it is important to state that the Federal Government remains firmly committed to the development of Nigeria’s steel sector, including the resuscitation of ASCL.

“A comprehensive technical and financial audit of the plant is presently underway to ensure that any decision taken is transparent, data-driven, and in the best interest of Nigeria.

“The overall assessment of the previous technical audit report dated 2018 maintained that the general status of the Steel Plant is in robust condition except for normal deterioration of replaceable parts and recommended automation of manual control systems for improved efficiency.”

Jibaniya further said, “The report also suggested the automation of manual control systems to enhance operational efficiency.

“The Ministry is optimistic that the outcomes of the updated audit will serve as a solid foundation for decisive actions that propel Nigeria’s industrial ambitions forward.

“The federal government is resolute in its goal to establish a competitive and modern steel industry that will contribute significantly to national industrialization and infrastructure development”.
