Group calls on security agencies, international community to put Malami on watch list

The Coalition for Justice and Equity (CJE) has called on security agencies and the international community to include former Attorney General of the Federation, Abubakar Malami, on the watchlist.

The group labelled Malami’s recent allegations against Kebbi Governor, Dr. Nasir Idris, as a “smokescreen to promote an agenda” in Nigeria, labelling his claims as baseless, politically motivated and a dangerous attempt to destabilise Kebbi State and undermine national security.

Executive Director of the Coalition for Justice and Equity, Comrade Isaac Olayemi, emphasised that Malami’s petition represents “a brazen display of political opportunism” and “deeply mischievously fabricated with the intent to distract, destabilise, and delegitimise the progress Kebbi State has made under its current leadership.”

In a petition dated September 10, 2025 to the National Security Adviser, Inspector-General of Police, Director-General of the Department of State Services and other security chiefs, Malami alleged that Governor Idris was covertly supporting the importation of foreign mercenaries, thugs and clandestine arms networks into Kebbi State.

However, the coalition dismissed these claims as “mischievously fabricated” and a desperate bid by Malami to deflect attention from his own alleged involvement in similar activities, including reports of him facilitating banditry in the state just 48 hours prior.

Olayemi accused Malami of hypocrisy, pointing to his silence during his eight-year tenure as Attorney General under President Muhammadu Buhari.

“During that era, bandits, terrorists, and criminal gangs brutally attacked numerous towns in Kebbi and throughout Nigeria during that time. Yet, not once did Malami raise his voice in solidarity with the victims, issue letters of condolence, or used his immense power to persuade the federal government to take immediate action,” Olayemi said.

He described Malami’s sudden concern for Kebbi as “laughable and insulting,” accusing him of attempting to recast himself as a “messiah” after years of alleged negligence and corruption scandals, including “the brazen abuse of office we want to start from, the unexplained accumulation of wealth that is visible to the blind, the controversial handling of high-profile cases, or the brazen attempt to shield cronies from accountability.”

The coalition highlighted the suspicious timing of Malami’s petition, noting it came just 48 hours after reports surfaced accusing him of facilitating banditry in Kebbi.

“This is the oldest trick in the book: when caught in the act, cry louder than your accusers. This is a classic case of the guilty pointing outward to deflect attention from his own shadowy dealings—just like a hunter who is trying to pose as prey,” Olayemi stated.

The group questioned the credibility of Malami’s intelligence, asking, “Could it be that he knows so much because he is himself part of the orchestration?”

Olayemi praised Governor Idris for his proactive leadership in tackling insecurity, collaborating with security agencies, and supporting affected communities.

“Since the Governor assumption into office, he has demonstrated proactive leadership by working together with security agencies to tackle insecurities, support victims of attacks, and restore peace to troubled communities,” he said.

He called Malami’s claim that Idris has ties to terrorists “very laughable and unfounded,” arguing it is “an attempt to weaken the public’s confidence in legitimate institutions” and part of a broader conspiracy by “displaced politicians – people who have lost relevance, who the people have rejected, and who now seek to fan the embers of discord to regain political relevance.”

The coalition labelled Malami’s actions as unpatriotic and treasonable, warning that “Security is not a pawn on the chessboard of political ambition.

“The preservation of lives and property is the sacred duty of any responsible government. To politicize it, to exaggerate figures, to conjure phantom mercenaries, and to smear sitting leaders with unsubstantiated allegations, is not only unpatriotic but treasonable.”

They urged the National Security Adviser, Inspector-General of Police, Director-General of DSS, and all relevant agencies to place Malami under strict watch, subjecting “his finance, movements, networks, and people he associates must be subjected to rigorous scrutiny.”

PAP seeks employment opportunities for 18000 trained ex-agitators, beneficiaries

The Presidential Amnesty Programme (PAP) has sought the partnership of the Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) for employment opportunities for some of the 18,000 trained ex-agitators and beneficiaries of the programme.

Speaking during a courtesy visit to the Executive Vice-Chairman/Chief Executive Officer of the NCC in Abuja, Dr Aminu Maida, the PAP Administrator, Dr Dennis Otuaro, said that the commission’s support would help the scheme’s post-training empowerment scheme.

Otuaro said there were ex-agitators and beneficiaries of the programme with the requisite qualifications and skills that the commission could employ to enable them to contribute to national growth and development.

He said many of them had completed their formal educational and vocational training in relevant fields as part of the PAP’s effort at human capacity development.

Otuaro, in a statement signed by his Special Assistant on Media, Igoniko Oduma, described them as potential human resources that could be harnessed for the socio-economic advancement of the Niger Delta and the country.

He said, “We are on a mission to seek support and collaboration with government agencies like the NCC to see how some of them can be engaged so that they can contribute their quota to national development.

“The whole scope of the programme centres on national and human security, where the beneficiaries are trained in formal education and vocational skills, including information technology. Many people have been trained in various professional fields.

“So far, we have over 18000 persons who have been trained. These are potential human resources that should be harnessed for national development. By the design of the programme, we have the post-training, employment, and empowerment component.

“So we have an army of human resources that will contribute to national growth when engaged. We also have persons with doctorates of philosophy (PhDs) that can be easily engaged, and that is the essence of the human capacity development that we carry out.”

In his remarks, the NCC boss expressed the commission’s commitment to providing support and equal opportunities to people without bias, stressing that there should also be evidence of value from interventions.

Maida said the commission was poised to carry out its mandate as a regulatory agency while ensuring access to digital connectivity by all citizens.

He, however, called for infrastructure security against vandalism to protect digital assets and sustain digital connectivity across the country.

Ondo police arrest fleeing suspected car theft syndicate, recover stolen vehicle

The Ondo State Police Command has arrested a fleeing member of a notorious armed robbery syndicate, notorious for stealing and reselling Toyota vehicles across the state.

The suspect, identified as Silas Oteku, was apprehended by operatives of the Special Weapons and Tactics (SWAT) unit along Ajibamidele, Ore–Lagos Road, following intelligence reports. A grey Toyota Sienna, earlier reported stolen in Akure, was recovered from him at the point of arrest.

Police spokesperson, DSP Olayinka Ayanlade, in a statement over the weekend, said Oteku confessed to belonging to the criminal network that specialises in snatching and fraudulently selling Toyota vehicles.

He was also linked to the fraudulent sale of another stolen Toyota vehicle earlier recovered in Akure.

Ayanlade revealed that Oteku admitted being part of the same gang whose five members had earlier been arrested, arraigned before the Akure Magistrates’ Court, and connected to the recovery of four stolen vehicles.

While Oteku remains in custody, the alleged mastermind and other fleeing members of the gang are still at large.

Commending the SWAT operatives for the breakthrough, Commissioner of Police Adebowale Lawal urged them to pursue the case until the syndicate is fully dismantled.

He reassured residents of the command’s commitment to safeguarding lives and property, adding that Oteku will be charged in court once investigations are concluded.

LASTMA nabs hit-and-run driver after Ogudu flyover accident

The Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA) on Sunday apprehended the driver of a Nissan Jeep who attempted to flee after allegedly knocking down a pedestrian in a reckless driving incident along the Lagos–Ibadan Expressway, shortly after the Ogudu flyover inward Ifako.

According to official statements, the vehicle, with registration number KJA 354 ET, was travelling at high speed when the driver tried to outmanoeuvre a fully loaded 40-foot articulated truck.

The dangerous manoeuvre caused the driver to lose control, ramming into a pedestrian before veering into the expressway’s central median.

Instead of stopping to help the victim, the motorist reportedly attempted to escape.

LASTMA officers deployed in the area gave chase and successfully intercepted the suspect. The injured pedestrian was simultaneously rescued and rushed for emergency medical attention.

Confirming the incident, LASTMA’s Director of Public Affairs and Enlightenment, Adebayo Taofiq, said the suspect was immediately handed over to the Ogudu Police Division for further investigation. The damaged vehicle was also evacuated to the station.

The agency’s General Manager, Mr. Olalekan Bakare-Oki, commended his officers for their professionalism and quick response.

He also issued a stern warning to motorists against excessive speeding and reckless overtaking, stressing that such actions endanger not only drivers but also pedestrians and other road users.

“Motorists must exercise caution and ensure roads are clear before attempting to overtake or divert. Safety must remain paramount on our highways,” he said.

LASTMA reaffirmed its commitment to safeguarding lives, enforcing traffic discipline, and maintaining order on Lagos roads.

Traffic violation: FRSC secures 245 convictions in Abuja

The Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) secured a total of 245 convictions during a series of Mobile Courts sittings held from September 8 to 12, at Nyanya and Unit Commands of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT).

FRSC spokesman, Assistant Corps Marshal Olusegun Ogungbemide, revealed this in a statement on Sunday.

According to Ogungbemide, 254 offenders were arraigned for committing a total of 563 traffic-related offences, out of which 245 were convicted, while nine were discharged after due consideration by the court.

He said the result was achieved due to the Coors intensive clampdown on traffic violators under the ongoing Operation Restore Sanity IV.

“The offences cut across a wide spectrum, including: Seatbelt violation 129 cases, Driver’s licence violation 122 cases, Overloading 111 cases, as well as Route violation 63 cases,” Ogungbemide said.

“Other offences such as dangerous driving, traffic light violation, number plate violation, wrongful overtaking, use of phone while driving, caution sign violation, and impersonation were also booked.”

According to him, a striking case was that of one Hussaini Kabir, who committed traffic offences and also impersonated a military personnel.

“He was handed a five-day community service sentence to be served at Mambilla Barracks,” the FRSC spokesman said.

He said the Mobile Court sittings were presided over by His Worship Maryam Muazu Alhaji and His Worship Huzaifa Maccido, while the FCT Sector Legal Officer, CRC Cindy Talabi, served as the prosecuting counsel.

  • Ossiomo power subscribers reject BEDC, urge Edo governor to restore supply

Ossiomo power subscribers reject BEDC, urge Edo governor to restore supply

Electricity subscribers of Ossiomo Power in Benin City and its environs have declared they will not switch to the Benin Electricity Distribution Company (BEDC), despite pressure from the Edo State government.

The subscribers, connected through the 11kva lines provided by the state government, appealed to Governor Monday Okpebholo to reconnect the lines to Ossiomo Power, whose operations were shut down on September 1 following an ownership tussle between Chinese investors and Nigerian partner, Dr. Uwa Igiehon.

At a stakeholders’ meeting in Benin City, the subscribers said they preferred Ossiomo’s services over those of BEDC.

Representative of Ossiomo Power, Festus Evbuomwan, assured stakeholders that the company would resume electricity supply at full capacity within 10 days, but clarified that power would not be restored to third-party customers connected through the state-provided 11kva lines.

The subscribers, however, urged the firm to engage Governor Okpebholo and convince him to allow reconnection.

Chairman of Kokobi Continental Hotel, Mr. Kokobi Igbinovia, lamented that he had lost millions of naira due to the shutdown of Ossiomo’s plant, urging the governor to intervene and resolve the dispute in the interest of investors.

According to him, “Ossiomo service is fantastic. It is recently heard that they have a little problem. I pray they resolve their problems because Ossiomo actually brought electricity.

“This crisis made me lose millions of naira. I don’t want to mention how much I lose daily when it comes to electricity. I pray this problem is resolved because Ossiomo is light. We don’t want to be in the dark. Whoever has tried to bring this private power has done very well. I encourage the state government to give a boost to Ossiomo so that we cannot remain in darkness.

“I encourage the owner of Ossiomo to talk with the state government to make sure the problem is resolved. When you have electricity, people will want to come to Edo to do business. Edo is a nice place to stay. Lots of people come to Edo. We are all enjoying it. The Governor should look at it and make sure it is ok. We put in a lot of money to invest in Edo State. Let us encourage Ossiomo.”

  • True federalism: Movement backs call for restructuring

True federalism: Movement backs call for restructuring

The Movement for National Reformation (MNR) has backed the call to restructure the existing constituent administrative units of Nigeria to reflect global best practices of federalism.

The organisation made the call in a statement signed by Prof O. Igho Natufe (MNR Constitution Review Committee); Dr Yemi Adegoke (CRC Secretary); Da Jonathan S. Akuns (Publicity Secretary), and Youth Leader, Barrister John Apollos Maton.

It maintained that the debate over the national survival and unity of Nigeria was not an academic exercise, but rather an existential matter that impinges on the life of the federation and its citizens.

It disclosed that the MNR draft legislative Bill for the exercise was presented to the public on 14th August 2024 and circulated to the subsisting governing authorities of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, including President Tinubu, Senate President, Speaker of the House, 36 Governors of littoral states of the Republic, and FCT Minister.

The statement said, “MNR affirms unequivocally that: the way forward is to restructure the existing constituent administrative units of Nigeria to reflect global best practices of federalism and in remembrance of the constitutional democracy birthed by the 1963 republican constitution. India provides a classic template of such restructuring by its 1956 State Reorganisation Act that restored political stability, economic prosperity, and social justice in the polity.”

The movement asserted that despite its population and rancorous politics, the Indian polity has delivered on constitutional governance that works for all, pointing out that its advocacy for Nigeria’s restructuring mimics the Indian exercise as it is anchored on a legislative process, unlike the questing of some Nigerians for a fresh constitution enactment requiring a constituent assembly, among others, to nurture the exercise.

“Our vision for restructuring Nigeria simply rests on a legislative process that lifts the military suspension imposed on the 1963 republican constitution for a first amendment of its federalist tenets to accommodate contemporary realities,” the statement said.

Read Also: Team Nigeria to Tokyo in high spirits

It added, “The MNR process will leverage the provenance of the existing 36 littoral states for Ethno-national Referenda cum boundary adjustments to determine the number of federating units that will emerge in the polity; some of the units will be homogenous while others will be heterogeneous, but anchored on an empirically tested numerical factor. For instance, Russia has 85 federating units classified into six categories.

“The MNR proposal is the most cost-effective exercise that eliminates the need for a constituent assembly, country-wide referendum and the strains of a rousing effort for a brand-new constitution; the first amendment of the 1963 republican constitution will deliver a ‘new’ constitution and also set in motion an evolutionary trajectory in course of time similar to that of the constitution of the USA that has been amended 27 times from its enactment in1789, a period of over 235 years.

“The credibility of the MNR proposal is founded on a synergy of federalist tenet of global best practices the emerged from the 1648 Treaty of Westphalia, UN statute on the Will of the people as the basis of the authority of government, the 1950 question posed in Ibadan on the choice of federalism that reflects the ‘existing linguistic groups’ in Nigeria as well as the July 1963 ‘All Party” conference in Lagos of Ethno-national entities.’”

The organisation explained that the outcome of the constitutional exercise in Ibadan and Lagos birthed the 1963 republican constitution that was enacted in parliament by the elected representatives that emerged from the first federal elections of 1959, based on the global principle of universal adult suffrage.

  • Oyetola takes Nigeria’s IMO Council seat campaign to New York

Oyetola takes Nigeria’s IMO Council seat campaign to New York

Nigeria’s campaign for a seat on the International Maritime Organization (IMO) Council under Category C has entered a new, high-profile phase in New York, as the Minister of Marine and Blue Economy,  Adegboyega Oyetola, has formally addressed Permanent Representatives of African nations to the United Nations at a reception in Nigeria House..

Having officially flagged off the campaign in London on 18th June at the IMO Headquarters, the New York event forms part of a sustained diplomatic engagement to mobilise support ahead of the Council elections scheduled for later this year.

Delivering a speech imbued with maritime vision and national resolve, Minister Oyetola thanked the UN envoys for attending the reception held ahead of the 80th Session of the United Nations General Assembly, and extended the warm greetings of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, GCFR. He emphasised that Nigeria’s candidature was more than an ambition: it is a solemn pledge of partnership with the international community.

Oyetola pointed to Nigeria’s extensive maritime endowments, which include 853 kilometres of coastline, over 10,000 kilometres of inland waterways, and a large Exclusive Economic Zone, as well as the country’s strategic location on the Gulf of Guinea, a corridor of vital commercial significance. He also reiterated Nigeria’s commitment to the IMO’s core mandate of safe, secure, environmentally responsible, efficient, and sustainable shipping.

The Minister drew attention to Nigeria’s track record of action, especially the transformative Deep Blue Project under the Nigerian Maritime Administration and Safety Agency (NIMASA), which has coordinated air, land, and sea assets to enhance maritime security. He highlighted that for three consecutive years, Nigeria has recorded zero piracy incidents in its waters, while piracy in the broader Gulf of Guinea has dropped sharply – achievements which he said have restored confidence among international shipping stakeholders and affirmed Nigeria’s role as a guarantor of maritime safety.

He said, “In recent years, we have transformed the maritime security architecture of our region. Through the landmark Deep Blue Project, we have established a multi-layered, integrated maritime security framework, coordinating air, land, and sea assets under the Nigerian Maritime Administration and Safety Agency (NIMASA). The results speak for themselves: for three consecutive years, Nigeria has recorded zero piracy incidents on its waters, while incidents in the Gulf of Guinea have drastically reduced, restoring confidence for international shipping and underscoring Nigeria’s role as a guarantor of maritime safety.

“Our ports serve as critical gateways for trade in West and Central Africa, while our shipping industry remains one of the largest in sub-Saharan Africa. With a renewed national focus on the blue economy and robust institutional reforms, Nigeria is repositioning itself as a regional maritime powerhouse and a dependable global partner in shaping the future of international shipping.”

The Minister underscored Nigeria’s renewed institutional reforms and growing blue economy agenda. He explained that Nigeria has ratified and domesticated key IMO conventions and is actively working to accede to additional instruments addressing greenhouse gas emissions, biofouling, and maritime labour rights. Compliance with regulations on emissions, pollution control, and sustainable port operations is central to this alignment with global norms.

He also reaffirmed Nigeria’s strong commitment to the United Nations Sustainable Development Goal 14, which concerns the conservation and sustainable use of oceans, seas, and marine resources, and to the Kunming-Montreal Global Biodiversity Framework.

“Nigeria has signed the Agreement on Biodiversity Beyond National Jurisdiction (BBNJ) and has already commenced its ratification process. Demonstrating regional leadership, Nigeria has also spearheaded efforts among West African nations, validating a regional roadmap for the development of a proposal to designate a High Seas Marine Protected Area in the Convergence Zone of the Canary and Guinea Currents.

“Nigeria envisions an IMO that is representative, inclusive, and forward-looking. With a population exceeding 240 million — of whom nearly 60 per cent are under 19 years old — Nigeria stands as both a regional maritime leader and a partner for the future. We are making sustained investments in maritime education, capacity-building, and skills transfer. We are also committed to gender inclusivity, fostering the participation of women as seafarers, port operators, and maritime leaders — because global progress must rest on shared opportunity,” Oyetola said.

Nigeria’s campaign, according to Oyetola, is grounded in reciprocity and solidarity. The strategy seeks bilateral and multilateral bridging, with Nigeria sharing technical assistance and expertise with other developing states, particularly within Africa, Small Island Developing States and Least Developed Countries.

The Minister asserted that a vote for Nigeria would be a vote for responsible leadership, inclusivity, and balanced, collaborative progress in maritime governance.

He urged the envoys to support Nigeria as part of efforts to shape a maritime order that is safer, greener, more resilient and more inclusive; to safeguard trade, protect the planet, and uplift people.
