World Suicide Prevention Day: NOA urges collective action to tackle rising cases

The National Orientation Agency (NOA) has urged Nigerians to intensify efforts in preventing suicide, describing it as a pressing public health concern that demands collective action, compassion, and awareness.

The call was made by the Jigawa State Director of NOA, Mr. Tijjani Ibrahim, in a statement issued as part of activities marking the 2025 World Suicide Prevention Day.

Ibrahim explained that suicide, the act of intentionally taking one’s own life, is often driven by factors such as mental health challenges, trauma, social isolation, substance abuse, and chronic illness.

He noted that this year’s theme, “Creating Hope through Action,” underscores the need for proactive measures to inspire hope, provide support for people facing mental health struggles, and reduce suicide rates worldwide.

“Every year, more than 720,000 lives are lost globally to suicide. Each of these deaths leaves behind families, friends, and communities deeply affected. We must work together to create awareness, break the stigma around mental health, and support those in need,” he said.

The NOA Director called on Nigerians to remain vigilant, show empathy, and extend help to individuals displaying signs of distress or hopelessness, stressing that suicide is preventable through timely interventions and adequate support systems.

He further urged families, religious leaders, schools, civil society organisations, and the media to play active roles in spreading messages of hope and encouraging those struggling with mental health issues to seek professional help.

Activist slams Sowore over attack on Tinubu

The Leadership Centre for Civil and Post-Trauma Rehabilitation has cautioned activist Omoyele Sowore over his recent verbal attacks on President Bola Tinubu.

Speaking at a press conference on Wednesday in Abuja, the general secretary of the group, Dr. Agbi Abubakar, condemned Sowore’s recent statements, describing them as highly irresponsible and unacceptable.

He noted that Sowore had previously insulted senior public figures, including the Inspector General of Police, religious leaders, governors, and ministers, and has now extended his attacks to the presidency.

Abubakar said, “Any attempt to label the President a criminal is a crossing of the red line.

“Enough is enough! These orchestrated assaults on the President’s character, integrity, and track record have gone beyond the limits of tolerance and decency.”

Dr. Abubakar praised President Tinubu’s leadership, describing it as a “grass-to-grace” story and a beacon of hope in governance.

According to him, the President has introduced unparalleled governance frameworks, along with exemplary administrative, accounting, and auditing practices, setting a new benchmark for leadership in Nigeria.

He highlighted the President’s bold policy reforms, which, according to him, have brought clarity and progress to national administration.

He added, “President Tinubu’s reforms have essentially cleansed the Augean stables. His achievements have captured the imagination of Africa and the world, proving that transformational leadership is possible on the continent.

“These governance templates will serve for all times and across all climes. They stand as models for effective leadership.

Abubakar labelled Sowore as a “perennial candidate for high office who has consistently proved his electoral worthlessness.”

FCCPC, Enugu govt vow tougher enforcement over food contamination

The Federal Competition and Consumer Protection Commission (FCCPC) has warned against the rising cases of food adulteration and unsafe practices in Nigeria’s food sector, stressing that no nation can prosper while endangering the health of its citizens.

The caution came during a one-day sensitization campaign on food quality standards, safety, regulation, and fair business practices organized by the FCCPC on Wednesday at Toscana Hotel, Independent Layout, Enugu.

Delivering the keynote address, FCCPC’s Executive Vice Chairman, Mr. Olatunji Bello, said the commission was deeply concerned about the growing menace of chemically ripened fruits, adulterated palm oil, contaminated meat, and unsafe grains.

The Executive Vice Chairman, who was represented by the Director of Quality Assurance and Development, Dr. Nkechi Mba, said, “Food is not merely a commodity; it is a fundamental human right.

“Unsafe food not only endangers lives but undermines trust in markets, disrupts trade, and damages the reputation of businesses. Any operator who places profit over public safety will face the full wrath of the law.”

He highlighted some of the dangerous practices in the food industry, including the use of calcium carbide for forced ripening, toxic additives such as bromate and Sudan red colorant, and poor hygiene across the value chain from farms to markets.

These, he said, expose consumers to severe health risks and weaken Nigeria’s agricultural competitiveness.

The FCCPC, Bello added, is working closely with agencies such as NAFDAC, SON, the Federal Ministry of Agriculture, and state authorities to enforce food safety laws through surveillance, education, sanctions, and prosecutions.

The FCCPC Director of Consumer and Business Education, Mr. Yahaya Garba Kudan, in his welcome remarks, said the commission was committed to empowering consumers and stakeholders with the knowledge to make informed choices and advocate for safer practices.

“Our goal is to equip you with the tools needed to identify adulterated food, understand the dangers of forced ripening, and know the avenues available for seeking redress,” Kudan said, urging participants to actively engage in the sessions.

Also speaking, the Enugu State Commissioner for Agriculture, Patrick Ubru, described food contamination as a threat to both public health and national development.

He warned that unsafe agricultural practices and poor storage methods could lead to frequent hospital visits for consumers and rejection of Nigerian agro-products in international markets.

“Health is wealth, and what you eat determines your productivity,” Ubru noted. We cannot overlook this challenge. Preventing food contamination requires joint responsibility—not only from government but from every farmer, vendor, and consumer.”

He outlined preventive measures including proper hygiene, safe storage, adherence to best agricultural practices, and food safety education, adding that vendors and households must cultivate the habit of cleanliness to protect the food chain.

The campaign brought together regulators, industry players, consumer groups, civil society organizations, and market unions, who pledged to collaborate in ensuring safer food systems in the country.

Oworonshoki demolition: Residents ignored all warnings – Lagos Govt

The Lagos State Building Control Agency (LASBCA)  says its removal of shanties and other unapproved buildings at Oworonshoki followed due process as the residents ignored all warnings.

Mr Gbolahan Oki, Permanent Secretary, Ministry of Physical Planning and Urban Development, Lagos State,  told newsmen during an interaction in Lagos on Thursday evening that the affected structures had been served demolition notices.

He said that the residents were given enough time to obtain planning permits during the state government’s amnesty programme for unapproved buildings.

According to him, the amnesty began with a 90-day window from May 2024 to July 2024, and  was extended to October 2024 and finally to December 2024.

Oki said: “Only two or three persons in that community took advantage of the amnesty, and those buildings were not demolished. Others ignored all warnings.”

He added that LASBCA officials, together with community leaders and traditional leaders, engaged the residents through meetings and sensitisation before the demolition.

Oki said that most of the demolished buildings were distressed, blocking drainage channels and posing security threats.

He added that some tilted backwards and had visible cracks or were only patched with paint to look safe.

“The government cannot allow people to live in houses that are not fit for habitation.

“We are now insisting that every property in Lagos must have a certificate of fitness for habitation,” he said.

According to the permanent secretary, obtaining a planning permit now  takes  10 days to 15 days once the necessary documents are submitted.

He noted that the office issuing the permit had been decentralised to all local government areas.

The official  said that the demolitions were not carried out in secret.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that a three-minute video showing marked buildings and community meetings at Oworonshoki was presented during the interaction.

Oki said that the demolition was necessary to safeguard lives, improve drainage and enhance security in the area.

NAN recalls that the Lagos State Government granted a three-phase amnesty between May 2024 and December 2024 for owners of unapproved buildings to regularise their documents.

During the period, 18,489 applications were submitted and 8,856 planning permits were issued.
