UNICEF, ministry train journalists on ethical child rights reporting

The Federal Ministry of Information and National Orientation, in collaboration with the United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF), has organised a two-day training for journalists across northern states on ethical journalism and child rights reporting.

The workshop, held at Tahir Guest Palace in Kano State, brought together over 100 practitioners from mainstream electronic and print media, both public and private.

Speaking at the opening ceremony, Chief of the UNICEF Field Office in Kano, Mr. Rahama Rihood Mohammed Farah, urged journalists to embrace ethical reportage that promotes children’s confidence, protects their rights, and supports their growth into courageous and productive adults.

He cautioned that insensitive reporting on issues involving children—such as cases of rape, theft, or other traumatic experiences—could cause lasting harm to their psychological wellbeing and future development.

“It is very important for journalists to avoid presenting reports in ways that may scare children from going to school or traumatise them into losing confidence in themselves and in society,” he said.

According to him, ethical reporting helps to build confidence, eliminate misconceptions, heal divisions, and create a society where children can live happily with hope for a better and sustainable future.

Farah stressed that the media plays a critical role in informing both leaders and communities about child rights, hence the need for practitioners to handle such sensitive stories professionally and responsibly.

He cautioned that unethical reporting not only endangers children’s lives but also fuels distrust, division, and unending societal crises.

“Professional journalists are always expected to avoid publishing stories about children—especially victims of sexual abuse or molestation—with their names, images, or any detail that could expose them to community stigmatization, gossip, or social deprivation,” he added.

He further noted that journalists in Nigeria operate within a complex society with multidimensional challenges, hence the need to always be guided by the fundamental ethics of the profession in order to drive sustainable campaigns against child abuse.

UNICEF therefore charged participants of the workshop to become champions of ethical reporting in both mainstream and social media, safeguarding the rights of children and strengthening societal cohesion.

LASTMA contains tanker fire in Lagos

The Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA) yesterday contained a petroleum tanker fire at Iyana-Isolo on the Mile Two 2-Oshodi Expressway, preventing what could have been a larger calamity.

The tanker, which was laden with Premium Motor Spirit (PMS), overturned while in motion and burst into flames, spreading to at least four other trucks parked in the area.

Preliminary findings indicated that the incident was triggered by excessive speeding, which caused the driver to lose control while negotiating the inward Oshodi corridor.

In a coordinated emergency response, LASTMA operatives under the supervision of the agency’s command mobilised allied responders, including the Lagos State Fire and Rescue Service, police divisions from Aswani, Ilasa and Mushin, and the Neighbourhood Safety Corps. Their joint efforts brought the blaze under control and prevented it from escalating into a wider disaster.

General Manager of LASTMA, Mr. Olalekan Bakare-Oki, said more operatives from adjoining zones were deployed in reinforcing the containment. He expressed relief that no life was lost, attributing it to the agency’s timely cordoning off of the affected corridor and restriction of vehicular movement from Ilasa inward Oshodi.

Bakare-Oki cautioned drivers of articulated vehicles, fuel tankers and other heavy-duty trucks to obey speed limits.

He also urged the public to make use of LASTMA’s toll-free hotline to report emergencies promptly, assuring that the agency is always prepared to respond.

Director of Public Affairs and Enlightenment Department of LASTMA, Mr. Adebayo Taofiq, reaffirmed the authority’s commitment to public safety and orderly traffic management across Lagos.

  • ‘No sabotage in Abuja–Kaduna train derailment’

‘No sabotage in Abuja–Kaduna train derailment’

•Minister, NRC MD apologise to reporters for ill-treatment

The Minister of Transportation, Saidu Ahmed Alkali, and Managing Director, Nigerian Railway Corporation (NRC), Mr. Kayode Opeifa, have assured Nigerians that the Abuja–Kaduna rail service remains safe, dismissing speculation that last week’s train derailment on the corridor was the result of sabotage.

Speaking to reporters at the State House over the weekend, the Minister said investigations into the incident were ongoing, but preliminary findings suggest that it was caused by an operational issue rather than any deliberate act.

“We have fixed the point machine from here up to Kaduna, and since then, there has been no issue of derailment. For this incident, investigations are ongoing, and we don’t want to preempt the committee until it submits its report,” Alkali explained.

The Minister acknowledged that the country still grapples with recurring cases of vandalism of railway assets, despite several arrests and prosecutions in recent years.

He noted that the Federal Government, in collaboration with the Office of the National Security Adviser, is finalising a plan to bolster the protection of critical rail infrastructure.

Alkali also hinted at ongoing procurement processes to extend rail connectivity from Warri to Ajaokuta and Abuja.

On efforts to restore the Abuja-Kaduna corridor after the accident, Alkali said four of the 10 derailed coaches had been evacuated using specialised rail cranes, while work continued to remove the remaining ones and repair the damaged section of the track.

He assured commuters that effort was being made to resume normal services as quickly and safely as possible.

The incident has drawn attention to Nigeria’s broader rail safety challenges.

Data from the National Bureau of Statistics (NBS) indicate that between 2020 and this year, the country has recorded 188 train derailments.

Significantly, 183 of these occurred in just a three-year span: 57 in 2020, 61 in 2021, and 65 in 2022, underscoring derailments as the most common type of railway accident in recent times.

Observers have pointed to factors such as poor maintenance, ageing infrastructure, vandalism, and gaps in security as persistent problems for the rail sector.

Responding to reports that N30 billion was allocated in the 2023 federal budget for rail security, the Minister clarified that although such a proposal was presented, it was not captured in the final Appropriation Act.

He, however, reiterated the government’s commitment to investing in new security measures, including advanced acoustic sensing systems to monitor and protect rail lines.

On the issue of press access during the incident, NRC Managing Director, Dr Kayode Opeifa, apologised to reporters, particularly to Nigerian Television Authority (NTA) reporter Comrade Ladi Bala, who was reportedly denied access to the accident scene.

His apology followed a protest letter from the Nigeria Association of Women Journalists (NAWOJ), which had condemned the harassment of its immediate past national chairperson.

“If any journalist or medium felt excluded or not well treated at the accident scene, I take full responsibility and I sincerely apologise. We are committed to transparency and will continue to provide the press with access and information as events unfold,” Opeifa said.

He also addressed concerns about safety, noting: “Nationwide, rail tracks are constantly targeted by vandals and scrap syndicates. But with specific reference to this incident, the track showed no signs of sabotage or structural failure. Our initial findings indicate it was an operational accident at a junction point.”

Opeifa confirmed that 618 passengers on board the derailed train were safely evacuated, adding that 20 sustained minor injuries, while seven were hospitalised but had since been discharged.

The NRC, he added, has borne all medical expenses for the affected passengers.

The recent incident has rekindled debates over the safety of Nigeria’s railways, which have experienced a surge in patronage since the federal government launched new standard gauge lines such as the Abuja–Kaduna and Lagos–Ibadan corridors.

As the NBS figures highlight, however, ensuring consistent safety across the network remains a challenge.

For now, the Ministry of Transportation and NRC maintain that the Abuja-Kaduna line remains secure, with efforts underway to restore full operations and implement long-term measures to guarantee the safety of passengers and rail assets.

CP warns against unprofessional conduct of traffic officers in FCT

    …launches operation ‘keep traffic moving’

The Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Commissioner of Police, (CP), Ajao Adewale, has cautioned traffic officers against unprofessional conduct.

Adewale gave the warning at the weekend while lecturing all Divisional Traffic Officers, Motor Traffic Police (MOTOPOL), and other traffic officers at the Command Headquarters.

During the lecture, the CP expressed dissatisfaction with the current performance level of traffic officers, stressing the need for a renewed sense of duty.

He emphasised that traffic is one of the visible indicators to measure the civility of a city, while traffic officers remain the first image of the police in any environment.

The CP warned them to maintain high standards of discipline and shun all unethical behaviors that can cause negative public perception of the Force in general and the Command in particular.

The CP, who personally toured the city during the previous week to observe traffic flow at peak hours, highlighted 30 key traffic hotspots across the FCT, including Wuse, Area 1 Roundabout, Jikwoyi, Karu, Kurudu, AYA, Apo Resettlement, Gudu, Galadima, Dawaki, Kubwa, among others.

He tasked officers to ensure visibility at these points to guarantee free flow of traffic at all times.

Adewale charged them to raise their standards and deliver quality service by ensuring neat turnout, early presence at traffic points, effective management during peak periods, and prompt clearance of obstructions.

He further directed officers to clamp down on those in the habit of driving against traffic, as well as indiscriminate picking and dropping of passengers on the highways.

Condemning the unprofessional practice of jumping into vehicles of traffic offenders or attempting to seize control of their steering wheels, the CP described such actions as dangerous, unacceptable, and contrary to the ethics of policing.

While rounding off the lecture, the CP declared the immediate commencement of Operation “Keep Traffic Flowing” and created a surveillance team to monitor the activities of all traffic officers, with strict instructions to arrest any officer found violating these directives.

According to a statement issued on Sunday by the FCT Police Public Relations officer, SP Josphine Adeh, the CP enjoined members of the public to obey traffic regulations, respect traffic officers on duty, and desist from offering money or inducements to officers, as such acts are inappropriate and unlawful.

While assuring residents of the FCT of sustained visibility and effective control at major traffic points, the CP urged members of the public to promptly report any suspicious activity by contacting the Command through its emergency numbers: 08032003913, 08061581938.
