Ondo trains 100 livestock farmers on safety to boost food security

As part of efforts to enhance food security, the Ondo state government on Tuesday trained 100 livestock farmers on precautionary measures and safety management practices to improve productivity and protect lives.

The four-day training, organised in partnership with the World Bank and the Federal Ministry of Agriculture and Food Security, aimed to promote productivity and efficiency within the state’s livestock farming systems.

Speaking at the programme themed “Occupational Health and Safety Workshop for Livestock Farmers/Stakeholders in the Ondo State L-PRES Project,” the State Commissioner for Agriculture and Forestry, Leye Akinola, described the initiative as a vital component of Governor Lucky Aiyedatiwa’s agenda to drive food security and agricultural development.

Mr Akinola, represented by the Director of the Animal Husbandry Services Department, Mr. Ojo Raphael, said the trained farmers were drawn from the 18 local government areas of the state.

He stressed the important role they play in ensuring food security, generating income, and stimulating rural development, noting that livestock farming comes with numerous occupational risks and hazards.

“We interact more with animals than anyone else. We are exposed to various risks – animals that may kick, bite, or transmit zoonotic diseases, harsh weather, chemicals, dust, noise, and physically demanding work,” he said.

“Unfortunately, these dangers are often overlooked and accepted as part of the job, resulting in preventable injuries and even fatalities.”

He emphasized that occupational health and safety should not be seen as a financial burden, but as a critical investment in farmers’ wellbeing, the quality of the food supply, and the long-term sustainability of the livestock sector.

“Safety is not optional but necessary. Training creates awareness, and awareness breeds habit. This workshop must not be a one-off,” he added.

The Commissioner called for continuous training and awareness campaigns focusing on areas such as safe animal handling, machinery use, disease prevention, and biosecurity.

Also speaking, the State Programme Coordinator of the Livestock Productivity and Resilience Support Project (Ondo L-PRES), Mr. Olufemi Adeogun, explained that the beneficiaries were randomly selected from all 18 local government areas.

Adeogun said the L-PRES is a six-year intervention by the World Bank through the Federal Ministry of Agriculture and Food Security, with the Project Development Objective (PDO) of improving productivity, commercialisation, and resilience of targeted livestock systems.

He highlighted the importance of timely disease reporting and public health awareness, stressing the importance of global relevance of occupational safety.

“Some farmers fail to report outbreaks like bird flu, which poses health risks to the general public. We must prioritise both personal and public health.

“Every day, millions of people go to work expecting to return home safely. Sadly, that’s not always the case due to preventable workplace injuries and fatalities.

“Occupational Health and Safety is not just about ticking boxes or passing inspections – it’s about valuing life and fostering a culture of shared responsibility,” Mr Adeogun.

Couple sentenced to 22 years imprisonment for drug trafficking in Lagos

A businessman, Ajah Johnson Uchenna and his wife, Rosemary Uchenna, were on Monday, 4th August 2025, sentenced to a total of 22 and a half years imprisonment by Justice Deinde Dipeolu of the Federal High Court 8 in Lagos for dealing in illicit drugs.

Director, Media and Advocacy, NDLEA Headquarters, Abuja, Femi Babafemi, disclosed this in a statement on Tuesday.

Babafemi said the couple was first arrested on Friday, 13th June, by operatives of the Department of State Security (DSS) in the Ojo area of the state and transferred to NDLEA along with 277.5kg skunk, a strain of cannabis.

According to the statement, while they were still being investigated in custody, credible intelligence revealed that the family business was going on in their house.

This, Babafemi said, led to a raid of their home and a packing store where 231kg of the same substance was recovered by NDLEA operatives on Tuesday, 1st July.

The NDLEA Spokesman said they were subsequently arraigned in charge number FHC/L/632C/2025 at the Federal High Court, Lagos, on a four-count charge bordering on conspiracy, dealing and storage of 414.2 kilograms of cannabis sativa.

Babafemi said delivering his judgement on the case on Monday 4th August, Justice Dipeolu convicted Mrs.Rosemary Uchenna on counts 1, 2, and 3 and sentenced her to 17 years in prison without an option of fine, while her husband Johnson Ajah Uchenna was convicted and sentenced to five years imprisonment without option of fine on count 1 and six months in jail on count 4 with an option of N1 million fine.

The statement reads, “In addition to the jail terms, the trial judge also ordered the sum of Three Million, Four Hundred and Seven Thousand Naira (₦3, 407,000.00) only recovered from the couple as proceeds of crime be forfeited to the Federal Government.”

Babafemi said similarly, a Federal High Court in Kano presided by Justice Simon Amobeda has convicted and sentenced a 42-year-old Indian lady, Neetu Neetu, to five years imprisonment for importing 72 parcels of heroin factory sealed in wafer wraps and packaged as chocolates, weighing 11 kilograms into Nigeria through the Mallam Aminu Kano International Airport (MAKIA) Kano.

He said the class A drug consignment was recovered from Neetu’s luggage after a thorough search, following processed credible intelligence, during an inward clearance of Qatar Airways flight QR1431 from Bangkok, Thailand, via Vietnam and Doha at the arrival hall of the Kano airport on Friday, 14th March 2025.

She was subsequently arraigned in charge number FHC/KN/CR/65/2025 before Justice Amobeda, who eventually sentenced her to 10 years on two counts, with an option of a N2 Million fine, the statement indicated.

It reads, “In like manner, a 42-year-old Angolan businessman, Mbala Dajou Abuba, was convicted and sentenced to five years in prison by Justice Mohammed Yunusa of a Federal High Court in Kano following his arrest and arraignment by NDLEA for ingesting 120 pellets of cocaine weighing 1.829 kilograms.

“Abuba, who is from the Zaire province in Angola, was arrested on Tuesday, 25th February 2025, at the screening point of the Kano airport while trying to board Egypt Air flight MS 880 to Istanbul, Turkey via Cairo.

“Equally, a Federal High Court in Enugu has convicted another drug trafficker, Eze Christian Ikenna, on two counts of unlawful trafficking and possession of 11.20 kilograms of cocaine, brought against him by the NDLEA in charge number FHC/EN/CS/9/2023.

“He was arrested on January 20, 2023, by NDLEA operatives at the Akanu Ibiam International Airport, Enugu, upon arrival from Brazil via Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, with 11.20 kilograms of cocaine concealed in herbal tea sachets.

“He was subsequently arraigned before Justice M. G. Umar of the Federal High Court, Enugu, who eventually sentenced him to three years imprisonment on each count, totalling six years, while the sentence will run concurrently, effective from May 20, 2023.”

Babafemi said in yet another high-impact breakthrough in its ongoing war against illicit drug trafficking across Nigeria, the NDLEA has secured the final forfeiture of a multi-billion Naira 80-room Hotel and Lounge in Victoria Island, Lagos, linked to an illicit drug trafficking cartel, along with other assets.

He said the 80-room hotel in Victoria Island, Lagos, used as a cover for distributing illicit substances, was raided between Friday, 25th and Saturday, 26th April 2025, by NDLEA operatives who, after hours of combing the rooms, recovered 589 bags of Canadian Loud, a strong strain of cannabis.

The drugs, he said, had a total weight of 417.3 kilograms worth One Billion Forty-Two Million Five Hundred Thousand Naira (₦1,042,500,000) only in street value.

    “Forfeited along with the landed property situated at No. 16 Waziri Ibrahim Street off Elsie Femi Pearse Road, Victoria Island, Lagos, include: Toyota Sienna Vehicle marked KJA 79 HJ;

Volkswagen Delivery Van numbered AAA 525 JE; KIA Ceranto Car with plate number BDG 860 GQ; Black Colour Land Cruiser Prado with plate number AKD 472 DZ; Red Colour Grand Caravan Dodge with plate number APP 847 YF; White Colour Mazda Bus marked KTU 241 AAA; Mercedes Benz Truck with registration number ASB 500 XY; Gold Colour Toyota Corolla Car with registration number EKY 295 JT; Ash Colour Sienna Mini Bus; 84 Television Sets; 70 Air New Conditioners; and 13 New Fridges.

“The final forfeiture orders were issued on Friday, 18th July 2025, by Justice Ibrahim Ahmad Kala following the motion number FHC/L/MISC/447/2025 filed by NDLEA,” Babafemi said.

Reacting to the conviction and forfeiture court judgements, Chairman/Chief Executive Officer of NDLEA, Brig Gen Mohamed Buba Marwa (Rtd) commended the various commands of the Agency, their officers and men that handled the various cases, as well as the judiciary for delivering prompt judgements to strengthen the deterrent effect of NDLEA efforts.

“Nothing serves the cause of justice more than when the criminal elements are given long jail terms and made to forfeit all they have acquired through the proceeds of their illicit drug trade, and we’re happy with this kind of judicial pronouncements, which will not only encourage our men to do more but will have long lasting impact on our drug control efforts”, Marwa stated.

Foundation flags off food bank to combat hunger in Lagos

…targets cleaners, security personnel in Lekki, VI, Ikoyi environs

Pharmacist and philanthropist, Akinjide Adeosun, on Monday launched a food bank initiative targeted at vulnerable workers in Lagos.

This is part of efforts to address hunger and food insecurity in line with the United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goal 2 — Zero Hunger.

The initiative, kicked off under the Akinjide Adeosun Foundation (AAF) on his 57th birthday, was to cater for cleaners and security guards in the Lekki, Victoria Island, and Ikoyi communities.

Adeosun, who is also the Founder and Chairman of AAF, said the programme was borne out of deep concern about the growing hunger crisis in Nigeria, exacerbated by recent economic reforms such as fuel subsidy removal and forex liberalisation.

“What we are witnessing today is the downside of bold economic decisions. People are hungry and angry. Our research confirmed that 100% of the cleaners and security men we surveyed identified hunger as their number one challenge,” he said.

The pilot phase of the food bank provides a nutritious meal of jollof rice, moin moin, beef, chicken, egg, fruit, and water. “This is not just food; it’s what I personally eat , balanced and rich,” he added.

Meals will be distributed monthly through churches, mosques, and communities for three to six months. Beneficiaries will be registered, and cooks within these communities will be engaged to prepare meals, creating a ripple of microeconomic activity.

“This is not a one-off event. We’ve been consistent in our advocacy for education and health for nine years. Now, we are adding food as a third pillar,” Adeosun said.

He urged the government and private sector to embrace structured food bank models to ensure long-term impact and reduce the need for seasonal palliatives. “Nobody loves to beg. With proper systems in place, food banks can restore dignity and reduce crime driven by hunger,” he said.

He also expressed readiness to partner with institutions such as Fidelity Bank and appealed for collaboration with the First Lady, Senator Oluremi Tinubu, and Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu to scale the model.

Adeosun described his 57th birthday as a moment of reflection, gratitude, and recommitment to national development. “I’m grateful to God for the gift of life and the opportunity to serve. But as a nation, we must do more. Each of us has a role to play,” he said.

The Akinjide Adeosun Foundation has over the years implemented impactful projects in education and healthcare, including free medical outreaches and leadership training in schools. The food bank marks a new frontier in its mission to improve life expectancy and quality of life in Africa.

He added: “If you have ₦1,000, give ₦500 to someone in need. Doing good doesn’t require wealth? just willingness.”

Earlier in the day, a thanksgiving service was held at All Souls Anglican Church, Lekki Phase 1, where Venerable John Agboro delivered a sermon on the birthday theme “Thanksgiving in Freedom.”

Drawing from Galatians 5:1, the vicar reminded congregants that true thanksgiving must reflect not only in words but in service to others. He praised Adeosun’s food bank initiative as “a practical expression of gratitude to God by becoming a blessing to humanity.”

“There are many things we take for granted, health, education, the ability to move, live, and raise a family. When we recognize God’s blessings, the right response is to help others. The food bank is an example of gratitude lived out,” he said.

Later at a private breakfast reception at Boutique Restaurant, well-wishers delivered goodwill messages highlighting Adeosun’s legacy of leadership and compassion.

A former colleague and long-time friend,

Founder of HealthPlus Limited, Pharm Mrs Bukky George said: “Pharm. Akinjide Adeosun is a visionary entrepreneur and a committed advocate of SDG 3 and SDG 2. Through St. Racheal’s Pharma and AAF, he is not only ensuring access to affordable healthcare but also developing principled leaders and feeding the hungry. His life is a model of purpose and impact.”

Also, Mrs Nkem Adeogun, a senior bank executive and family friend, described Adeosun as “very focused, principled, and passionate about leadership. He’s committed to leaving the world better than he found it. I wish him abundant joy, good health, and continued impact.”

One of the beneficiaries, Michael Oluwafemi, a security guard, expressed heartfelt appreciation: “I really appreciate this. As a security man, I don’t need much, just something to eat. When you have enough food, it means you’re no longer suffering from poverty. That’s why I value this food. Thank you so much.”

Another beneficiary, Ibrahim Joseph, noted the wider impact of the initiative, saying: “This food means a lot. Many people can’t even get food now because it’s so expensive in Lekki. Some can’t go to work because there’s nothing to eat, and even businesses can’t afford to pay salaries. If more people likes Adeosun do things like this, Nigeria will be better. Everywhere will be good. I’m happy.”

Stakeholders laud Tinubu for UBEC’s boss appointment

Education and Tech Coalition of Activists and Social Entrepreneurs have applauded President Bola Tinubu for the appointment of the Executive Secretary of the Universal Basic Education Commission (UBEC), Aisha Garba, over significant reforms that have brought significant solutions to primary education across the country.

The coalition, through its co-chairs, Olaonipekun Kazeem, the Executive Director of the Focus Teens Foundation and Olamide Apejoye, Head of the Developing Engineering Leaders stated this in a joint statement on Monday, August 4, 2025.

The coalition stated that President Tinubu went out of his way to recruit Aisha Garba from the World Bank, signalling the seriousness of his administration towards educational reforms in Nigeria.

The statement partly read, “UBEC under the leadership of Aisha Garba as its Executive Secretary have implemented reforms that have directly impacted basic education across the country. Out-of-school children are getting back in classrooms, while some are accessing school for the first time. Her leadership has also improved the quality of education through the upgrade of learning tools and teaching in order to increase positive outcomes.

“This would have been impossible without the help and support of President Tinubu, who went out of his way to bring Dr Garba from the World Bank, signalling how important his administration is keen on education reforms in Nigeria.”

Similarly, founder of Alpha Reach, JJ Omojuwa, in a post on X earlier today, also commended the ES, Aisha Garba for being able to allow states in the country access grants to improve the quality of basic education.

He said, “For two decades, an ordinary document created a stumbling block for states to access matching grants. This meant stalled access to education for many children. Aisha changed that!”

Omojuwa added, “She reformed the system by removing long-standing bureaucratic cogs and helped to open access to the states who are now able to do a lot more than ever as they plug into the UBEC matching grants.

“This has led to over 60% fund utilisation – a record, impacted about 3 million children, led to the distribution of 6m books to primary schools nationwide, about half a million library materials and other such interventions. States now feel more like partners in education development with the FG, all thanks to reforms led by Dr Aisha Garba.”

He also noted that Garba had managed a $3 Billion project portfolio across multiple countries whilst working with the World Bank, supervising the design, execution, and evaluation of large-scale education and skills development programs in Nigeria, Kenya, Somalia, Ghana and many other countries. He stated that despite being a few months in, Garba’s reforms have began to affect the country’s educational development.

Many Nigerians have also been commending UBEC through various social media platforms.

On X, Mazi NnaEmeka posted, “didn’t come in to play politics, she came in to work, and she’s already breaking 20-year barriers that kept millions of children from accessing education.”

HighChiefOkoro also posted, “This is what purposeful leadership looks like. No noise, just results. @AishaMGarba is proving that with the right competence and vision, even the most rigid systems can be reformed for impact.”

These, among many other such comments are remarks by Nigerians who have been impressed by the ongoing reforms in the country’s primary education sector under Dr. Aisha Garba.

Several parts of Lagos were submerged yesterday following hours of heavy rainfall that disrupted commercial activities and left many residents counting their losses.

The downpour, which began around midnight, affected  Mushin, Ikorodu, Lekki, Adeniji, Oke Arin, Apongbon, and Isheri/Bucknor..

In a viral video in Ijede, Ikorodu, a woman was seen appealing to Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu to intervene and address the persistent flooding in her community.

At Isheri Osun-Bucknor axis, residents lamented the worsening state of the Isolo–Isheri Road, saying the rainfall had compounded their woes.

A resident, who pleaded anonymity, said: “One of the major issues is the lack of proper drainage systems. As a result, the area experiences frequent flooding whenever it rains. This creates inconvenience for both residents and passersby, especially individuals like me.

In Mushin, the story was not different. Streets and compounds were submerged.

A trader, Mrs Motunrayo, Mr Lanre, lamented the flooding.

Lanre said: “The flood has affected my daily sales and also slowed down transportation due to traffic. The major cause is the blocked drainages, and it’s been a recurring issue here.”

At Isolo-Oke, residents decried the recurring decimal.

Commissioner for the Environment and Water Resources, Tokunbo Wahab, said: “We have seen this trending video, but want to assure residents that the ongoing project awarded by Governor Babajide Olusola Sanwo-Olu shall permanently resolve this problem. I have instructed the contractor to commence excavation to the discharge point and concentrate on the construction of culverts. The concrete work ongoing will continue later. We are sorry for the inconvenience caused while we work on a permanent solution.”

NEMA, in collaboration with SEMA, had visited Ogbaru local government and the communities for flood simulation and sensitisation.

The operation aimed to test Nigeria’s preparedness for anticipated flooding, enhance multi-agency coordination, and raise awareness among vulnerable communities.

Director-General, NEMA, Mrs. Zubaida Umar, said the simulation was a demonstration of the agency’s proactive approach to disaster management, particularly in high-risk flood-prone states like Abia, Anambra, and Imo states, as identified in the 2025 Seasonal Climate Prediction by the Nigerian Meteorological Agency (NiMet) and the Annual Flood Outlook.

Magodo residents seek Sanwo-Olu’s intervention over environmental degradation, others

Magodo Residents Association(MRA) have urged Lagos State Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu to save the estate from a looming infrastructural and environmental degradation.

In a statement yesterday, Chairman of the MRA, Mr. Niyi  Odusi, appealed to the governor to stop the development of buildings in a land-locked location originally classified as a gorge in the masterplan of Magodo GRA Phase 2, Shangisha, Lagos.

Odusi said the gorge serves as a natural water collection point and is supported by vegetation and sand mass that holds the elevated part of the location, which prevents the structures on the low lands from being submerged by flow of rain water.

The residents urged Sanwo-Olu to prevail upon a property developer allegedly  in connivance with the state’s Ministry of Physical Planning  bent on distorting the natural setting and peace of the environment at the expense of existing properly situated properties and infrastructural conveniences.

“Our concern is that developers aided by top officials of Lagos State Physical Planning have decided on building in the gorge and are bent on distorting the natural setting and peace of our environment at the expense of existing properly situated properties, infrastructural conveniences, and thereby cause ecological distortions in an otherwise natural and stable space.

“In our letter of 24th April 2025, we had intimated the Ministry of Physical Planning and other relevant departments and agencies of Lagos state to this development. We expected that the relevant government agencies and departments would rise to the occasion to prevent a looming environmental disaster being perpetrated by this developer. Our suspicion is that there may be individuals within these agencies that are in cahoots with this developer,” Odusi said.

The residents added that  distorting the gorge, which hitherto offered natural ecological balance, would constitute avoidable danger to the environment and to precious lives and properties.

Among many demands, they urged the state government to stop activities in the gorge at the Green Valley Zone of the estate; order the developer to reinstate the natural setting of the location and indemnify the existing property owners and residents against actions that may affect their safety, security, and quality of life.
