Experts seek stronger regional partnerships to tackle air pollution in African cities

Clean air experts and environmental stakeholders have called for stronger cross-border collaborations and transdisciplinary partnerships to combat the growing air pollution crisis in African cities.

Speaking at the 2025 CLEAN-Air Forum in Nairobi, Dr. Babatunde Ajayi, General Manager of the Lagos State Environmental Protection Agency (LASEPA), highlighted Africa’s increasing commitment to air quality improvement through policy reforms and regional initiatives.

“In Nigeria, we are seeing significant progress with policies supporting open-data sharing, especially at the state level, where agencies are encouraged to publish air quality data,” Dr. Ajayi said. He added that agreements between African governments and academic institutions are driving research and practical interventions to improve urban air quality.

He also emphasized the need for increased investment in clean air initiatives, local manufacturing, and targeted pollution control strategies.

Echoing the call, Dr. Alice Kaudia of the Climate and Clean Air Coalition urged governments to prioritise air pollution in their national agendas, advocating for youth involvement, tech innovation, and public awareness campaigns.

“Youths can harness artificial intelligence and digital tools to monitor and mitigate pollution,” she said, adding that access to funding and resources would empower their participation.

Dr. Kaudia cited the Integrated Assessment on Air Pollution and Climate Change for Sustainable Development in Africa, which shows that mitigation strategies across sectors like transport, agriculture, waste, and household energy could dramatically cut harmful emissions such as PM2.5, black carbon, and methane.

“These efforts can prevent hundreds of thousands of premature deaths, enhance food security, and reduce climate impacts,” she noted.

With over 35 countries represented, this year’s forum—held under the theme “Partnerships for Clean Air Solutions”—underscored the importance of scientific collaboration, technological innovation, and shared policy frameworks to address air pollution on the continent.

The summit also spotlighted the use of emerging technologies like remote sensing, low-cost air sensors, and AI in closing air quality data gaps and enabling smarter, more effective responses.

Troops of Operation Safe Heaven have rejected N13 million from terrorists during an operation in Plateau State.

He said the troops were responding to a distress call about terrorist activities, when they encountered two terrorists who offered them the bribe.

‘’Troops arrested two suspects, recovered weapons, ammunition, a vehicle and N13,742,000 from them,” he added.

The troops of Operation Udo Ka in Southeast, arrested a tax collector for the Indigenous People of Biafra and Eastern Security Network (IPOB/ESN) in Anambra State, and recovered N1.5 million.

Maj-Gen Kangye, said the NURTW members, Isah Abdullahi and Abdullahi Mohammed, were arrested in Liya, Biu Local Government Area of Borno State while receiving waybill from a truck driver which corresponded with intelligence received earlier on the consignment.

“The items include 13 pairs of military uniforms and some high voltage batteries, among others.

“Troops also arrested another terrorists’ logistics supplier, Shaibu Bulama at Damasak Motor Park in Yobe State, 11 collaborators, and rescued seven kidnap victims across other theaters in Northeast.”

According to Kangye, troops recovered some quantities of arms and ammunition and safely detonated some Improvised Explosive Devices (IEDs).

He said: “As a result of sustained military operations in the Northeast theatre, 16 family members of terrorists, including 4 adult females and 12 children, surrendered to troops in Bama Local Government on July 14, 2025. Preliminary investigations indicate that the group surrendered from Bakura Jega village.”

In the Southeast, Kangye said troops on July 10, arrested a POB/ESN terrorists’ collaborator who was commissioned by the terrorists to collect taxes from the locals on their behalf in Ihiala Local Government Area Anambra State.

Firm denies role in social influencer’s court case

Real Estate firm, PWAN, has denied any involvement in the arrest and detention of one Social Media influencer, Scott Iguma, noting that while the matter was recently mentioned before Justice Oghazi of the Federal High Court, Ikoyi, reports linking the firm to his legal troubles are “false, malicious, and deeply misleading.”

In a statement, the company stressed: “PWAN, as a private corporate entity, neither has the authority nor has ever exercised any power to arrest or detain any individual. The suggestion that we are responsible for Iguma’s legal challenges is entirely false.”

According to the statement, the firm admitted that Iguma had, in recent months, waged a sustained smear campaign against the company but said it had responded with professionalism, restraint, and full adherence to legal channels.

The company insisted that Iguma’s detention has nothing to do with the company.

“Despite persistent provocations and the dissemination of falsehoods, we extended multiple invitations to Iguma for peaceful dialogue, offers he publicly declined, as evident in his social media posts.

“Information available to us indicates that Iguma is being held for allegedly evading lawful police invitations and for a reported altercation with law enforcement officials at Panti. These events are unrelated to PWAN and occurred independently of any involvement or directive from our organisation.”

The company urged the public and media to stop amplifying “unfounded allegations” and warned against turning social media into a trial ground.

“We must emphasise that social media is not an appropriate venue for resolving legal disputes or grievances. There are recognised legal and institutional channels for such matters, which PWAN has always respected,” he added.

The firm reaffirmed its commitment to transparency and ethical practices in Nigeria’s real estate industry, stating:

“PWAN remains firmly committed to integrity, the rule of law, and the continued advancement of Nigeria’s real estate sector through ethical, transparent business practices. Truth does not scream, it endures,” they said.

Rivers State Chief Judge, Justice Simeon Chibuzor-Amadi, has granted pardon to 21 inmates at the Port Harcourt Correctional Centre.

Chibuzor-Amadi clarified that the release of the inmates was not to interfere in the activities of another agency but to complement their efforts in ensuring a just and equitable society and enforcement of rule of law.

Landlord linked to death of two missing Ondo varsity students

The Ondo State Police Command has arrested a ‘prime suspect’ alleged to have masterminded the killing of the two students of the Adekunle Ajasin University Akungba-Akoko (AAUA), Andrel Eloho Okah and John Friday Abba, who were recently declared missing.

Addressing reporters yesterday in Akure, the state Commissioner of Police, Adebowale Lawal, said the suspect, also the landlord to the victims, identified as Femi Oladele (a.k.a ‘Tallest’), allegedly ordered some suspected cultists to “deal with” the two students for being rude to him.

Lawal said the students were abducted, robbed, raped, and murdered in cold blood, saying that the landlord who was arrested after the incident allegedly confessed to initiating the plot and aiding in the concealment of the murders.

He said the landlord was arrested after investigation to a petition filed on behalf of one Mr. Emmanuel Peter from Shagari Village, Akure, who reported the disappearance of his younger brother and his girl-lover, Abba, 25, and Okah, 19 to the police.

Lawal said the Anti-Kidnapping Squad launched an investigation, with forensic tracking leading operatives to Computer Village in Ikeja, Lagos, where an iPhone 14 Pro Max belonging to one of the students was recovered from Abdul Mohammed Mubarak, 38.

“Mubarak reportedly confessed to buying the phone from one Ojo Michael, who was later arrested in Aramoko-Ekiti. A Lexus RX 350, which belonged to the victims (students), was also recovered during the arrest.

“Under interrogation, Michael confessed to being involved in the robbery, abduction, and subsequent murder of the students.

“He claimed that the operation was masterminded by Oladele Femi, the landlord of one of the victims, who recruited him and an accomplice, known simply as “Kola” (still at large), to carry out the crime,” the CP said.

Lawal added that N800,000 was transferred from one of the students’ accounts during their captivity, stating that the arrested suspect (Michael) also admitted to raping the female student before killing her.

According to the police boss, the suspect reportedly told investigators that he murdered the female student because she recognised him and could expose his identity.

“Both victims (Abba and Okah) were then killed to prevent them from revealing their attackers. Their bodies were disposed of at different locations between Agbado and Ode-Ekiti,” he added.

Lawal further said investigations led to the arrest of the landlord, who allegedly confessed to orchestrating the crime and helping to conceal the killings.

He said acting on the landlord’s confession, police recovered the body of the female student in a bush near Ode-Ekiti.

“Her remains have been deposited at the General Hospital mortuary for autopsy, while efforts continue to recover the male victim’s body, believed to have been dumped in a river.

“This case stands as a tragic reminder of the brutality of premeditated crimes and the devastating consequences of betrayal and greed.

“The victims, young and promising undergraduates, were senselessly raped and murdered in cold blood. The command will ensure all those involved are brought to justice,” he added.
