    • WAPA trains skills instructors

Lagos State Government has disbursed N50,000 each to 750 widows as part of efforts to support and empower vulnerable women across the state.

Commissioner for Women Affairs and Poverty Alleviation (WAPA), Cecilia Dada, said this at the 2025 International Widows’ Day celebration held in Lagos.

She said the initiative was in line with the state’s ongoing commitment to improving the welfare of widows and creating opportunities for sustainable livelihoods.

“Today is International Widows’ Day, and we have gathered to celebrate and empower widows in Lagos State. We are giving 750 widows the sum of N50,000 each to support and uplift them,” she said.

Mrs Dada explained that the financial empowerment was part of a broader initiative following the Livelihood Economic Empowerment Programme (LEEP), a four-week vocational training scheme designed to equip widows with practical and marketable skills.

“LEEP is a short-term programme implemented across the five IBILE divisions of Lagos State. Widows are trained in trades such as catering, hairdressing, fashion design, tie & dye, and soap-making. These trainings are structured to be flexible and time-efficient, recognising the unique burdens widows carry as caregivers, breadwinners, and family anchors. Training is not the end but the beginning of a sustainable livelihood”

The commissioner noted that many beneficiaries had successfully launched businesses after completing the programme, aided by starter kits provided by the ministry.

Dada also called on residents, families, and institutions to support widows more actively in society, ensuring that their voices are heard.

Also speaking, the ministry’s Permanent Secretary, Rianat Onigbajo, described the gathering as a purposeful platform to amplify voices and reinforce shared humanity.

“Today’s event is more than symbolic. It is an expression of our collective responsibility to stand with widows across Lagos. Together, we can build a society where no woman or widow is left behind,” she said.

In another development, the Ministry of Women Affairs and Poverty Alleviation (WAPA) trained 68 Skills Instructors to further boost its vocational education across the state.

Mrs Dada, said the training was initiated to improve service delivery and innovation at the various WAPA skills acquisition centres.

Represented by Mrs Adejoke Oshodi-Olasunkanmi, Mrs Dada said the training would enable instructors to raise the bar.

She noted that the area of focus for the training were catering, hairdressing and cosmetology, and computer studies,

“This training is a significant step forward in our ongoing effort to ensure excellence in the delivery of vocational education across all WAPA Skill Acquisition Centres. This training is in line with the vision of Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu’s administration, to build self-reliant, skilled and productive residents, especially among women and vulnerable groups. This training is not just about knowledge transfer, it is about promoting continuous quality improvement, innovation and empowering our facilitators, to raise the standard of training delivery. When instructors grow, the entire system benefits, trainees become more competent, employable, and better prepared for entrepreneurship,” she said.

The commissioner enjoined the participants to take advantage of the programme to increase their knowledge, adding that the role of frontline educators could not be quantified.

The youths, under the aegis of Akoko Youth Forum (AYF), alleged that the killing of Atere was masterminded by herders.

Its National President, Ibukun-oluwa Akeju, described the killing of Mrs Atere as a direct attack on the peace being enjoyed in the community.

“This heinous act, allegedly carried out by suspected Fulani assailants, is a direct attack on the peace and safety of our people, a threat we can no longer tolerate,” he said.

The youths decried lack of immediate security response in the aftermath of the murder, noting that since the evacuation of the victim’s body by the police, no security presence had been deployed to the area.

“It is deeply troubling that since the incident occurred and the Nigeria Police evacuated her body, no form of security presence has been deployed to the community. Our people are now left to live in fear, without assurance of protection or justice,” he added.

They called “on the security agencies, traditional rulers, and relevant stakeholders to ensure that the perpetrators are arrested and prosecuted, and that peace and security are restored to the affected communities.”

  • Nigeria hosts inaugural global civil service conference as FG demands bold reforms

Nigeria hosts inaugural global civil service conference as FG demands bold reforms

The Head of the Civil Service of the Federation, Mrs. Didi Esther Walson-Jack, has declared that the global civil service must be urgently reimagined and rebuilt with bold ideas, inclusive purpose, and courageous leadership to remain relevant in a rapidly changing world.

Speaking in Abuja at the opening of the inaugural International Civil Service Conference, Walson-Jack described the event as a defining moment for governments around the world to break from outdated bureaucratic systems and confront 21st-century challenges with innovation, speed, and reform-driven action.

Hosted by the Federal Government of Nigeria in partnership with the Global Government Forum UK, the high-level gathering drew participants from Africa, Europe, and Asia, including civil service leaders, policymakers, development partners, and reform advocates.

Walson-Jack told delegates that the global civil service is at a crossroads, with many countries, especially in Africa, still operating under administrative systems built for a different era.

She cited growing public expectations, climate shocks, digital disruption, and pandemics as evidence that the traditional structures of government can no longer deliver at the scale and speed required.

According to her, Nigeria has already begun implementing critical reforms to reposition its civil service as a catalyst for national development. These include automating operations through an Enterprise Content Management System, linking individual performance targets to national development goals, and strengthening the capacity of training institutions such as the Public Service Institute of Nigeria and the Administrative Staff College of Nigeria.

She emphasised that these reforms are already yielding tangible results and not just policy ambitions.

The conference, she said, is designed to push beyond talk and deliver practical solutions, foster cross-border collaboration, and spotlight tested innovations that can be adapted to local contexts.

She further disclosed that delegates will engage with real-world examples of transformational public service delivery from Ghana’s e-governance system to Kenya’s institutional accountability models and Singapore’s AI-powered service architecture.

Walson-Jack said the conference would also serve as a stock-taking forum for Nigeria’s ongoing reform blueprint, the Federal Civil Service Strategy and Implementation Plan (FCSSIP 25), while forging new global and regional partnerships to sustain reform momentum.

She called on young public servants, gender equality advocates, data scientists, and policy thinkers present at the forum to see themselves not as the future of the civil service but as its present drivers of transformation.

“You are not the future of public service. You are its present. Your creativity, your courage, and your conviction will define whether we succeed in rejuvenating, innovating, and accelerating the transformation we seek,” she declared.

She urged participants to leave the conference with a mission not just to reflect, but to act—insisting that business as usual is no longer acceptable.

    • Urges collective action against hunger

In a move to combat hunger at the grassroots, the Foodclique Support Initiative has expanded its school meal programme to 10 Local Government Areas (LGAs) across Lagos. This initiative is part of a broader effort to alleviate food insecurity and improve the health and education of children in some of the most underserved communities in the state.

The milestone was highlighted during the organisation’s event, “Celebrating Impact Hunger Heroes: Honoring Our Collective Journey,” held at Marriott Hotels, GRA, Ikeja, Lagos. The programme, which has served nutritious meals to thousands of schoolchildren in need, is a part of Foodclique’s ongoing efforts to tackle hunger through education and community-driven solutions.

Team Lead of Foodclique, Ibrahim Onilegbale, reflected on the group’s achievements, praising the impact of the school meal initiative in Lagos’ 10 local governments.

“Our school meal program has provided nourishment to thousands of children, ensuring they are better equipped to learn and thrive. But this is just one part of a much larger mission to eradicate hunger in Nigeria, and we are calling for collective action to see that vision realised by 2030,” he said.

The initiative, which began over a decade ago, has expanded its reach through strategic partnerships with local governments, sponsors, and volunteers. Onilegbale emphasised that these collaborations have been instrumental in reaching vulnerable communities and ensuring that the most at-risk children have access to proper nutrition.

Foodclique’s efforts in Lagos include not only meal distribution but also providing long-term support through educational resources and skill-building initiatives for both children and adults.

Onilegbale highlighted that such initiatives are essential for breaking the cycle of poverty and hunger that disproportionately affects children from low-income households.

The organisation also took a moment to reflect on its impactful responses to national crises.

Onilegbale recalled Foodclique’s intervention during the COVID19 pandemic, when the group provided cooked meals to communities across the country. Their ability to adapt quickly and reach those most in need demonstrated the organisation’s capacity for agility in times of crisis.

During the event, Chief Executive Officer of the Noella Foundation, Mrs. Layal Tinubu, emphasized the link between hunger and unemployment. Tinubu, represented by Justice Omenogor, noted that the foundation’s core values—creating jobs and fighting poverty—align closely with Foodclique’s mission to end hunger and create sustainable solutions for the community.

“Creating opportunities for young Nigerians is key to addressing hunger in the long term. When we empower people with employment and the tools to succeed, we not only reduce hunger, but we build a more stable society,” she said.

Founder of Corporate Farmer, Akin Alabi, applauded the scale of Foodclique’s efforts, particularly in its work with local governments. He called for greater collaboration between the public and private sectors to ensure food security, especially in urban and rural areas where hunger remains a persistent problem.

“The work Foodclique is doing is making a real difference, but we need to do more. The government and private sector must come together to address food accessibility and affordability in a more systematic way,” he said.

Head of Research and Development at Foodclique, Tomilayo Sadiq, shared insights into the organization’s evolution since its inception.

Sadiq explained: “Our success is built on adaptability. Through smart planning and innovation, we’ve been able to ensure that our interventions reach the people who need them the most.”

Director of Food Sourcing and Fundraising, Mrs. Abosede Fadipe, thanked the sponsors and volunteers for their continuous support. She expressed her belief in Foodclique’s future, saying, “In the next ten years, I see Foodclique as one of the most influential organizations in the world, not just in Africa. We are committed to creating lasting change, and together, we will make a real impact.”

Lagos plans traffic diversion ahead of 110-day bridge repair

Lagos State government has announced a traffic diversion plan ahead of the long-anticipated repair works on the Ogudu/Ifako Bridge, which is scheduled to start on Saturday.

According to a statement by the Commissioner for Transportation, Mr. Oluwaseun Osiyemi, the bridge maintenance, initially postponed, will span 110 days, ending on Wednesday, October 15. The repairs will be executed in eight phases to minimise disruption.

The first four phases, covering the Ogudu/Ifako Bridge stretch inbound Alapere, will run from June 28 to August 16, a period of 50 days. The second segment – phases five to eight – will focus on the inbound Oworonshoki stretch and is scheduled from August 16 to October 5, lasting 51 days.

To ensure smooth vehicular movement during the partial closures, the government has mapped out alternative routes and advised motorists accordingly.

For Phase One, motorists coming from Iyana Oworo are advised to go through Gbagada and connect Anthony to access Ikorodu Road. The movement will be unimpeded after this connection. Only one lane will be accessible near the construction zone, specifically 50 meters before and after the repair point.

During Phase Two, commuters approaching from Eko Bridge are expected to divert through Funsho Williams Avenue to connect to Ikorodu Road.

Osiyemi emphasized that the closures are partial and limited strictly to active work areas. “Only 50 meters before and after the repair site will be cordoned off at each stage of the maintenance work,” he clarified.

“This intervention is crucial for the long-term safety and durability of the bridge structure,” Osiyemi noted, adding that the repairs will focus on the maintenance of the expansion joints of the bridge.

To reduce commuter inconvenience, officers of the Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA) will be deployed along all affected corridors to manage traffic flow and ensure minimal disruption to daily commuting patterns.

    • Sensitises pupils, youths, communities

Food and Beverage Recycling Alliance (FBRA) has reaffirmed its commitment to environmental sustainability with initiatives on education, advocacy, and infrastructure support.

The alliance also unveiled impactful activities to mark 2025 World Environment Day, with the theme: “Beat Plastic Pollution.”

FBRA’s campaign this year centres on promoting circular economy, fostering behavioural change, and empowering young Nigerians to lead environmental action.

In line with its youth-centric strategy, FBRA kicked off the day with an advocacy at Mainland Senior High School, Fadeyi, Lagos. The session engaged over 630 pupils on importance of recycling, dangers of improper waste disposal, and role young people play in preserving the environment.

To support sustainable waste practice in the school, FBRA donated upcycled eco-friendly bags made from repurposed post-consumer flexible packaging, educational materials on recycling, a weighing scale for tracking recyclables, a giant waste bin and two jumbo-sized recycling bags to encourage sorting and collection of plastic waste.

The pupils hailed the hands-on demonstration and pledged to be environmental ambassadors in their communities.

FBRA, with staff from member firms, volunteers, waste pickers and community advocates, held an awareness walk on Adeniji Jones, Ikeja. Participants engaged with residents and commuters, driving home messages of responsible disposal and benefits of recycling.

With placards, branded vests, and street-level energy, the walk served as an effort to drive home the urgency of environmental restoration.

FBRA thereafter hosted a buy-back programme at Adekunle village in Ikeja, where residents got FBRA member company products in exchange for recyclables. The initiative, in partnership with local collection partners, raised awareness on economic value of post-consumer packaging and offered residents a reason to engage in waste segregation.

To further strengthen plastic waste recovery, it launched two collection centres in Nasarawa, Abuja as drop-off points for recyclables, bridging the gap between community members and recyclers.

By adding new collection centres, FBRA is creating a more efficient ecosystem that supports the Nigerian government’s broader waste management goals.

Through collaboration with partners, schools, waste collectors, and the general public, FBRA’s 2025 World Environment Day campaign is a testament to the power of community action, education, and infrastructure development in delivering real impact for people and the planet.
