Police arrest man over alleged death of 10-year-old daughter in Calabar

Police operatives in Calabar have taken into custody a 24-year-old man, Mr Joseph Emmanuel of No. 3 Esit Ebom Street, over the alleged killing of his 10-year-old daughter.

The incident reportedly occurred on Wednesday, January 21, 2026, after the child allegedly misplaced her father’s plastic petrol pipe, which he uses to transfer fuel into his commercial motorcycle. The development reportedly provoked the suspect, leading to the child’s death.

Eyewitnesses said angry residents attempted to attack the suspect following the incident.

He was allegedly on the verge of being lynched before a resident, Okon Edwin of No. 5 Ekeng Ewa Street, Calabar South, alerted the police.

Troops discover terrorists’ mass grave in Borno

Troops of the Joint Task Force Northeast, Operation Hadin Kai (OPHK), have uncovered a mass grave containing the remains of about 20 terrorists killed during military operations in the Timbuktu Triangle, Borno State.

In a statement, the Media Information Officer of OPHK, Lt.-Col. Sani Uba, said the mass grave reflects the increasing casualties being suffered by terrorist groups as a result of sustained military offensives in the area.

According to him, the bodies were those of terrorists killed during encounters with troops and subsequently buried by their fleeing collaborators.

“The discovery of mass graves containing an estimated 20 terrorist bodies killed during encounters with troops in the Timbuktu Triangle further exposes the scale of casualties suffered by the terrorists and discredits their propaganda narratives,” Uba said.

The statement highlighted the significant successes recorded by troops in the ongoing clearance across the Timbuktu Triangle, noting that several key terrorist enclaves, including Tergejeri, Chiralia, and the Ajigin/Abirma general areas, have been cleared and brought under effective military control.

Uba explained that during the operations, troops made intermittent contact with fleeing terrorists and engaged them with heavy firepower, resulting in the killings of several fighters.

He further said on Tuesday, while troops were consolidating at a harbour location about six kilometres north of Chilaria, they encountered two Vehicle-Borne Improvised Explosive Devices (VBIEDs).

“Through vigilance and swift action, one of the VBIEDs was neutralised. However, the second VBIED breached the defensive position, affecting some logistics platforms,” he said.

Uba confirmed that the attack claimed some soldiers and members of the Civilian Joint Task Force, while others sustained injuries.

The wounded personnel were  evacuated by the Nigerian Army Aviation helicopters to the 7 Division Medical Services and Hospital for treatment.

He added that Nigerian Air Force aircraft, in coordination with other Army air platforms, provided continuous aerial surveillance and fire support during the evacuation to ensure the safety of ground troops, who continued to engage and kill fleeing terrorists.

Speaking at the event yesterday at LASTMA’s headquarters, Oshodi, Lagos, the Special Adviser on Transportation to Governor Sanwo-Olu, Sola Giwa, said the initiative was a gesture of appreciation to the families of the officers who died on duty and not compensation.

He added that the initiative was approved by the governor, following the concerns raised by the  Deputy Governor, Dr. Obafemi Hamzat, who said he was moved by the accounts of the risks, challenges and sacrifices faced by LASTMA’s officials on duty.

“The Deputy Governor, Dr. Obafemi  Hamzat, who was representing the government, was deeply moved as he listened to the experience, challenges, hazard and sacrifice that we face daily. He said something profound that day, that in traffic management, the greatest gifts are offered on sight and the greatest graces are consumed in court. It was in that spirit that Mr. Governor graciously approved that the families of our personnel put down in active service be supported with N2 million each, not as payment for loss, because no value can equal the price of a life, but as a thankful expression of state recognition for duty, courage and sacrifice,” he said.

‘How I joined Al-Barnawi’s terror group, suspect tells court in UN Building bombing trial

    • Hearing continues March 2

One of the suspects being prosecuted by the Department of State Services (DSS) along with Mohammed Usman (Khalid Al-Barnawi) and three others for being behind the August 26, 2011, bombing of the United Nations Building in Abuja, has told a Federal High Court in Abuja how he joined the terror group called Ansaru.

Al-Barnawi is, in court documents, alleged to be the leader of Boko Haram dissident splinter group, Ansaru.

At the resumption of proceedings yesterday, the second defendant, Mohammed Bashir Saleh, in a video recording played in court, said he joined Ansaru, led by Al-Barnawi in Bauchi shortly before the attack on the UN building, and that from that moment, their relationship blossomed.

Al- Barnawi was arrested by the Department of State Services (DSS) in April 2016 in Lokoja, Kogi State, five years after the attack on the building, the first of such attack on an international agency’s property in the country, which left over 20 individuals dead and over 70 others injured.

Al- Barnawi, also known variously as Kafuri/ Naziru/Alhaji Yahaya/Mallam Dauda/Alhaji Tanimu, is being prosecuted by the DSS along with Mohammed Bashir Saleh; Umar Mohammed Bello (aka Datti; Mohammed Salisu) and Yakubu Nuhu (aka Bello Maishayi).

At yesterday’s proceedings, the court saw another video recording of the interview involving Saleh and subsequently started the cross-examination of the third prosecution witness in the ongoing trial-within-trial being conducted to ascertain the voluntariness or otherwise of the confessional statements made by the defendants.

Under cross-examination by lawyer to the first defendant (Al-Barnawi), F. K. Kaigama, the witness identified as “TSR3” said he works in the Technical Department of the DSS and that  part of his functions includes setting up an audio/video recording machine in the interview room.

The witness said he also engages in audio/video recording of suspects during interviews.

On what his other functions are, the witness said: “In addition to the stated functions, I also undertake computer forensic examinations, mobile phones’ forensic examination, crime scene investigation, like fingerprint collection from the crime scene and analysis at the laboratory.

The witness said he did more than setting up the forensic audio/video recording machine in relation to the first defendant. He added that he did the audio video recording of the interview of the first defendant in real time (that is, as it was happening).

He said the third thing he did in relation to the first defendant was the audio/visual recording of the statement taking and the  audio/visual recording of the translation of the statement of the first defendant.

On whether there is a person known as James in the Technical Department where he works, the witness said there are several James in the Technical Department of the DSS.

At that point, Justice Emeka Nwite directed the postponement of further proceedings because he had other engagements.

With the agreement of lawyers to parties in the case, Justice Nwite adjourned till March 2 for the continuation of the cross-examination of PW3 in trial-within-trial.

  • ‘One-chance’ fraud, kidnap syndicate smashed in Lagos

‘One-chance’ fraud, kidnap syndicate smashed in Lagos

    • 13 arrested

The Lagos State Police Command has dismantled a notorious fraud and kidnapping syndicate operating under the guise of “one-chance” robbery, following the arrest of 13 suspects and  discovery of their operational base in Alimosho.

Commissioner of Police, Lagos State Command, Olohundare Jimoh, broke the news to reporters at the gang’s base at No. 85 Pipeline Road, Pipeline, Alimosho Local Government Area.

The Lagos State Building Control Agency (LASBCA) officials who visited the location placed a contravention notice on the property.

According to the police boss, the syndicate specialised in luring unsuspecting victims with fake business deals and foreign currency doubling, before abducting and extorting them when they refused to cooperate.

Jimoh explained that the breakthrough followed sustained intelligence-led operations and the interception of three members of the gang in the early hours of Monday at Bode Thomas, Surulere.

“The suspects arrested yesterday were the field operators sent out to pick victims. During interrogation, they led us to this location, which serves as their operational base,” he said.

    .

Investigations revealed that the syndicate, led by one Demola Ade-Lua, operated with at least six coordinated teams across Lagos, using multiple vehicles including a Toyota Sienna and other branded cars.

“They operate as fraudsters first. If a victim cooperates and releases money under the pretext of buying dollars or investing to double their funds, the person is released. But if the victim resists or suspects fraud, they detain the person here and call the family, claiming the victim has been kidnapped,” the CP stated.

He added that the gang deliberately targeted people travelling early in the morning or late at night, particularly worshippers returning from mosques and churches.

    Shrine-like detention room, weapons recovered.

At the premises, police discovered a small room described as a “shrine-like” confinement area where victims were held. Items recovered include weapons such as cutlasses, stones and other objects used to intimidate and assault victims, as well as piles of clothing believed to belong to past victims.

“These are not heavily armed criminals, but they use crude weapons to overpower and threaten their victims,” Jimoh said, adding that forensic and scientific investigations were ongoing to link the items recovered to reported crimes.

Among those arrested were Rotimi Adeluola, an indigene of Ogun State, and Samuel Ogbonna from Abonema in Rivers State, identified by police as the occupant of the premises.

Also in custody is a 60-year-old man, Emmanuel Njoku, from Abia State, who confessed to driving operational vehicles and picking up victims around the Bode Thomas area of Surulere for about eight years.

A female suspect, Tina Willi from Akwa Ibom State, was also arrested. She claimed she was not a regular member of the gang.

Ogbonna confessed to collecting between N100,000 and N200,000 from victims, while others admitted participating in the movement and detention of victims over several years.

One of the suspects, Njoku, said he had been involved in the operation for about eight years, claiming ignorance of the total number of victims.

Jimoh disclosed that further operations led to the arrest of 10 additional suspects, bringing the total number in custody to 13.

Police are also searching for five more vehicles allegedly used by the gang.

He noted that the success was a result of newly created stop-and-search points and undercover tactical squads stationed at strategic entry and exit points in Lagos.

“We are determined to flush out all remnants of this syndicate and others like them, including criminals coming in from neighbouring states,” he said.

The police commissioner urged residents to remain vigilant, advising them to avoid boarding vehicles with suspicious occupants and to take note of number plates.

“You must be your own first line of defence. Don’t be in a hurry. Ask questions. If you are not interested, say no and walk away,” he warned.

He also called on residents to report suspicious activities in their neighbourhoods, assuring that informants’ identities would be protected.

Jimoh announced plans to roll out a new Anti-Crime Patrol and Community Protection Unit, which would complement the Eco-Strike Force and Rapid Response Squad (RRS). The unit would operate round-the-clock across 10 identified locations, including waterfronts, following approval by the Inspector-General of Police.

“We are starting the year on a strong note. Lagosians can go about their lawful businesses without fear. Full deployment has been carried out across the state,” he assured.

The police also confirmed that the owner of the property was under investigation and would be handed over to relevant government agencies for sanctions.

Investigations continued, and the suspects were expected to be charged to court upon conclusion of police inquiries, he added.

Gov Sani visits community where bandits abducted 177 villagers

Governor Uba Sani on Wednesday visited Kurmin Wali community in Kajuru Local Government Area of Kaduna State, following the controversial abduction of scores of villagers by bandits and promised the quick rescue of those taken.

The Governor said the State Government was working closely with security agencies to ensure the safe return of the abducted persons, stressing that the protection of lives and property remained a top priority of his administration.

Sani was accompanied on the visit by the Commissioner of Police, Muhammad Rabiu; Commissioner for Internal Security and Home Affairs, Sule Shuaibu (SAN); Chairman of Kajuru Local Government Area, Dauda Madaki; and other senior government officials and security personnel.

Addressing residents, the Governor said he was in the community to personally sympathise with them over the attack that occurred on Sunday, assuring that the state would not abandon the victims or their families.

He said: “In Kaduna State, every life matters. We are here to assure the people of Kurmin Wali that the government is collaborating with all security agencies to ensure that those abducted return home safely.”

Sani said some residents sustained injuries during the incident, adding that the State Government would bear the cost of medical treatment for all affected persons.

He explained that security agencies initially took time to verify details of the incident, but noted that government attention was now firmly focused on rescuing the abductees.

The Governor said the state was working with the military, the Department of State Services (DSS), the police and the Office of the National Security Adviser to secure the release of the victims.

He dismissed debates over the number of abducted persons, insisting that even if one person was taken, the government had a duty to act decisively.

“We are not talking about numbers or politics. We are talking about the sanctity of human life. Whether one person or many, the responsibility of government remains the same,” he said.

Governor Sani cautioned against politicising insecurity, warning that commentary from people far removed from the situation could undermine efforts to resolve it.

He said the reception he received in Kurmin Wali showed that residents trusted the government and believed in its inclusive approach to governance, regardless of religion or ethnicity.

The governor assured the community that the abducted villagers would be recovered within days, expressing confidence in the ongoing security operations.

Responding to demands by community leaders, Governor Sani acknowledged the poor condition of the access road to Kurmin Wali and promised immediate intervention.

He disclosed that he had already engaged the Minister of Defence and other security chiefs, urging the establishment of a military base in the area due to its proximity to bandit-prone forests.

According to him, the location of Kurmin Wali makes it vulnerable, adding that a permanent military presence would prevent criminals displaced from major highways from relocating to rural communities.

Governor Sani also announced plans to build a befitting hospital in the community to address long-standing healthcare challenges.

He further directed relevant agencies to commence processes for the construction of the road, assuring residents that a groundbreaking would take place in the coming days.

Speaking during the visit, President of the Southern Kaduna People’s Union (SOKAPU), Mr. Tabara Katoh, commended the governor for what he described as pragmatic and compassionate leadership.

Katoh said Governor Sani was the first sitting governor to visit Kurmin Wali, adding that his actions had reassured the community despite conflicting reports surrounding the abduction.

He said attempts by political detractors to exploit the situation would fail, stressing that the community’s support for the governor was based on performance, not politics.

The Nation’s investigation revealed that, the abductors were yet to make any monetary ransom demand, although some escapees said the bandits demanded motorcycles in exchange for the hostages.
