Police deploy patrols, gadgets to secure Third Mainland Bridge

To ensure real-time surveillance, detection and prevention of crimes on the Third Mainland Bridge and surroundings, the Lagos State Police Command has deployed marine and ground forces for 24-hour patrols.

The patrol teams would work with the state-of-the-art control room built and donated to the Police Command by the Federal Ministry of Works.

Test-running the facilities yesterday, which have been integrated into the state’s security communication architecture, the Commissioner of Police Olohundare Jimoh, said it would aid in real-time prevention and detection of crimes, including traffic-related offences, acts of vandalism underneath or on top of the bridge.

Jimoh said the deployment of advanced cameras with range upto Victoria Island and parts of the mainland would further enhance safety and security in the state, warning those who might want to jump into the lagoon, and reckless drivers to desist from such acts as they would be caught.

According to the police boss, the control centre, though the fifth in Lagos, however, has hi-tech equipment that enable integrated policing capable of addressing contemporary security challenges.

According to him, a network of high-tech cameras have been installed at strategic locations across the state and are being monitored from a central control room by trained officers.

“The system enables real-time monitoring of public spaces, major roads, transport corridors, and critical infrastructure. Once suspicious activity is detected, information is relayed in real-time to officers on the ground for swift response.

“We operate a dedicated control group where activities are monitored continuously. Once anything unusual is noticed, whether on the road, in public transport areas, or within sensitive facilities, our teams are alerted instantly to take action,” he said.

To further enhance operational capacity, Jimoh said the command had taken delivery and deployed two new patrol vehicles, donated by the Lagos State Security Trust Fund (LSSTF).

“These vehicles are expected to improve response time and mobility during emergencies,” he said, demonstrating how the vehicles, patrol boats and control room work in synergy for seamless operation.

Jimoh said marine security had received a major boost with the deployment of a fully equipped patrol boat from the Federal Government to secure Lagos waterways, terminals, and waterfront facilities.

“The boats, supported by police personnel and surveillance technology including drones, will operate round the clock to deter criminal activities on water, ” he said.

In addition, the commissioner highlighted the effectiveness of the upgraded radio communication network, which allows officers to respond promptly to distress calls and coordinate operations more efficiently across the state.

The police boss expressed gratitude to the Minister of Works, Dave Umahi, for donating the control room facility to the command, and for his pledge to provide maintenance support to keep the place functioning.

He also thanked the Lagos State government, especially Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu and Executive Secretary (ES), LSSTF, Dr. Ayodele Ogunsan, for their continued support in providing critical security infrastructure, which has placed the state at the forefront of internal security preparedness in Nigeria.

“Our capacity to protect life and property has significantly improved.

These cameras, vehicles, boats, and communication systems represent a major step forward in the security architecture of Lagos State and, by extension, Nigeria,” he said.

The commissioner assured residents that the command remained committed to professionalism, effective service delivery, and the continuous use of modern technology to make Lagos safer for all.

UITH health workers protest unpaid salaries

University of Ilorin Teaching Hospital (UITH) Joint Health Sector Unions (JOHESU) yesterday protested  the stoppage of their salaries by the Federal Ministry of Health and Social Welfare.

The health workers’ peaceful protest was also over their unmet demands by the Federal Government.

The workers embarked on the protest after holding  an emergency congress at the union’s secretariat within the hospital’s complex .

The health workers had embarked on an indefinite strike since  November 14, last year, forcing the government to invoke the “no work, no pay” order.

Chairman of JOHESU at the UITH, Mr Oyelowo Olufemi, accused the Federal Government of insensitivity to their plight.

He said the government had signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) with the union since 2009, which indicates that the two salary structures of Consolidated Medical Salary Structure (CONMESS) and Consolidated Health Salary Structure (CONHESS) would receive due adjustment and recognition.

He, however, lamented that the Federal Government reneged on the pledge to accord the same importance to CONHESS.

He explained that the government has adjusted the CONMESS for the physicians thrice – 2014, 2017 and 2018 – while refusing to do the same for CONHESS.

“That is the backbone of the strike actions. We are demanding that the government adjust CONHESS also.

“We are appealing to the Federal Government to wade in and see what is going on in the Ministry of Health. They should do what is right for the health sector,” he added.

Tension in Delta community over suspected herdsmen attacks

Tension is rising in Umeh, a riverine community in Isoko South Local Government Area of Delta State, following allegations of attacks by herdsmen on residents and travellers.

A community leader and lawyer, Akpovienehe Duncan Afahakor, raised the alarm yesterday in a post on the Facebook platform, Umeh Need Road, warning that the situation was fast deteriorating.

In the post titled, “Umeh under attack,” Afahakor alleged that herdsmen had taken over farmlands and were attacking road users.

“No one truly understands the intentions of the group. They have occupied the Umeh bushes, preventing our people from accessing their farms. Beyond this, they emerge from the bush to attack motorcycle riders along the Umeh bridge. Just two days ago, without any provocation, one of our youths was shot in the leg multiple times,” he wrote.

According to him, the development has crippled farming in the agrarian community.

“As a result, we can no longer go to our farms to tend to our pepper, cassava, and plantain crops. The attacks have now extended to the road, and if urgent help does not arrive, there is real fear that the violence could spread into the community itself,” the post added.

Umeh, which gained access by road during the administration of former Governor Emmanuel Uduaghan following sustained advocacy on the platform, is mostly dependent on farming and riverine trade.

The Isoko South Local Government Chairman ‘s Chief Press Secretary, Michael Akpodhoma said he would communicate its action on the matter by today.

However, the state Police Command said it had not received any report of the alleged attack.

The Police Public Relations Officer, Superintendent of Police Bright Edafe, told The Nation: “We don’t have that report.”

Residents are calling for urgent intervention by the state government and security agencies to prevent further escalation.

  • Two killed as tanker collides with motorcycle in Lagos

Two killed as tanker collides with motorcycle in Lagos

Tragedy struck at Pokia Junction, inward Araga, on the Epe-Ijebu Road, Epe, Lagos, yesterday when an empty Premium Motor Spirit (PMS) tanker collided with a commercial motorcycle, resulting in the death of the rider and his passenger.

The Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA) confirmed the incident, stating that the tanker driver had been arrested and was in police custody.

According to the agency spokesperson, Adebayo Taofiq, preliminary investigations showed that the motorcyclist, carrying a male passenger, was riding against traffic on a prohibited one-way route when the tanker, reportedly moving at high speed, collided with the motorcycle.

The impact proved fatal, resulting in the death of the rider and passenger.

LASTMA operatives responded promptly, securing the scene, cordoning off the area to prevent secondary accidents, and notifying relevant authorities including the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC).

The tanker was later removed to restore traffic flow, and the remains of the deceased, along with the tanker driver, were handed over to the Noforija Police Division for further investigation.

The Special Adviser to the governor on Transportation, Sola Giwa, described the incident as a “sorrowful reminder of the deadly consequences of traffic violations.”

He urged commercial motorcyclists and road users to adhere to traffic regulations, warning against dangerous practices such as riding against one-way traffic and competing recklessly with larger vehicles.

“This unfortunate loss of lives was entirely avoidable. Had the motorcyclist remained within his lawful lane and observed a moderate speed, this fatal incident would not have occurred,” Giwa stated.

He further reiterated the state government’s commitment to enforcing traffic regulations and protecting lives on the roads.

LASTMA urged motorists to view traffic laws as life-saving measures rather than punitive rules, emphasising that compliance is essential for safety and orderly movement on roads.

  • Segun David attempts 161-hour parenting Guinness World Record

Segun David attempts 161-hour parenting Guinness World Record

Lagos recently became the centre of a historic educational initiative as Olaoluwa Segun David, a counselling psychologist and cognitive behavioural therapist, delivered a continuous 161-hour lecture on the theme “Psychology of Parenting,” aiming to set a Guinness World Record for the Longest Marathon Lecture.

The marathon, held from Sunday, 30th November to Sunday, 7th December 2025, took place at Phaze 4 Estate, Lagos Island, drawing parents, educators, faith leaders, caregivers, and online audiences. Topics ranged from child emotional development and parental mental health to discipline strategies rooted in growth rather than punishment.

Speaking on the motivation behind the feat, David emphasized, “The record or certificate was and is still never the goal. I only used the Guinness World Records platform to make noise about the importance of parenting, because it affects every home and deserves serious attention.” He added that the lecture sought to spark national conversations about family stability and child wellbeing.

The event adhered strictly to Guinness World Records guidelines, with continuous documentation, independent witnesses, and timekeeping throughout the seven consecutive days. While official confirmation from Guinness World Records is pending, the attempt itself has been completed successfully.

Beyond the record attempt, the lecture doubled as an educational platform, providing parents and caregivers with practical insights into nurturing emotionally stable children. David noted that many societal challenges stem from gaps in parenting support, making structured guidance critical.

Looking ahead, David plans to make the initiative an annual program, featuring structured teaching, group therapy, and one-on-one counselling.

By June 2026, he aims to establish a School of Parenting in collaboration with the American Institute for Applied Education, offering certification and ongoing training to ensure parenting education continues beyond a single event.

“Parenting is not a one-off event—it is a continuous process of growth, learning, and responsibility,” he said, underscoring the enduring purpose of the marathon lecture.
