  • Fire guts Ketu market, filling station

Fire guts Ketu market, filling station

FIRE yesterday swept through some parts of Lagos, wreaking havoc in Ketu and Lawanson.

Some sections of the Jakande Market in Ketu were destroyed by the fire.

The MRS Filling Station in Lawanson, Surulere went up in flames when a tanker exploded while about discharging fuel.

The Ketu fire, which started around 4a.m., destroyed shanties, three vehicles and goods.

The fire started from the plank section and spread to the fairly used tyre and banana sections.

Most of the dejected traders declined comment. The Babaloja, Chief Taofeeq Adeoye, said he was busy having meetings.

The Nation gathered that it took emergency agencies about five hours with three fire trucks to contain the inferno.

Although the cause of the fire could not be ascertained, there were speculations that it might have been caused by electrical surge.

A fashion designer, Shina, said he was asleep when he suddenly felt hot from within.

“As I tried to take the key of the vehicle I just bought yesterday, I saw fire. I had no other option than to run for my life. It is very painful. All my machines went. I watched my shop burn. All I worked for went in minutes. The painful part of it is that all the clothes I waited behind to design burnt. How many clothes do I want to buy and refund to the owners?”he said.

A trader, Muritador, said he just brought in N4 million worth of plank machines last week, adding that he has not started using it.

He said: “I was still in bed when I received a call. I became destabilised. How I drove to the market was by God’s grace. It is really pathetic. I placed so much on this. Most of us collected loan to stock our shops.”

Mrs. Rukayat Jinadu, a restaurant operator, said she just opened her canteen on Monday.

She said she lost gas cylinders, cooking burners, foodstuff, freezers and a generator set to the fire.

“I am confused. Everything doesn’t make sense to me. I have been left to my fate,” Mrs. Jinadu said.

A furniture maker, Mr. Semiu Agoro, said he lost seven doors and two machines, adding that he had the intention to deliver the two wardrobes he just completed.

“I just pray my customer’s understand because when I got to the market, I couldn’t recognise my shop. I have cried and cried but I know it won’t bring my shop back,” he said.

A trader said if the fire service men were informed on time, it wouldn’t have gotten to that extent.

He said whenever there was fire outbreak, traders are scared because they think the government may take over.

“If not for the hoodlums that sleep in the market, most people wouldn’t have taken anything. They were the ones who helped the traders. They kept all they salvaged for the traders. They acted well,” he said.

Lagos State Emergency Management Agency (LASEMA), General Manager Michael Akindele said there were no casualties in the incident.

“No life was lost and no injury recorded. But three vehicles and several shops were razed. Personnel of the Lagos State Fire Service were able to contain the fire from spreading to other parts of the market, thereby, reducing the havoc. Emergency workers, the Rapid Response Squad (RRS) and the police responded on time. The fire was heavy because of the inflammable materials like planks and tyres. We will commence post disaster assessment. There is need to put safety measures such as smoke/fire detectors and water hydrant in place to avert such situations,” he said.

Also yesterday, the government blamed the high frequency of fires on the influx of substandard electrical appliances in the market.

In a statement, Commissioner for Special Duties and Intergovernmental Relations Mr Oluseye Oladejo said preliminary investigation by his office and the State Fire Service, revealed that installation of substandard electrical appliances in most cases trigger fires.

Oladejo called on the Standards Organisation of Nigeria (SON) to beam its searchlight on the quality of electrical appliances coming into the country.

He urged residents to be more vigilant; go for only quality electrical appliances and ensure that they patronise only qualified electricians for installations.

The commissioner implored electricity generation (Gencos) and distribution companies (Discos) to look into the power voltage to prevent surges from high voltage which could cause fires.

The government, he said, would continue do everything within the law to ensure safety of lives and property.

“The government is not in any way comfortable with the number of fire incidents that have occurred in the last few months and, therefore, government will not look the other way while this increase in fire disasters continues,” he said.

Oladejo urged residents to be safety conscious and ensure that appliances not in use are turned off to reduce the probability of fires.

“Fire outbreaks in our homes, markets and offices are totally unacceptable and we must do something about it,” he said.

Two persons, including an attendant, four vehicles and two building were burnt in Lawanson.

A huge crowd gathered at the station as rescuers battled to quench the fire.

The attendant was said to have been burnt while attempting to open the underground fuel storage. The other victim, a resident of a nearby house, was said to be helping to fight the fire.

The heat from the underground tank is believed to have caused the fire.

He was said to have fallen from the top floor of his house while he and others were attempting to put out the fire. He was taken away by a government ambulance.

The incident occurred around 5pm. Residents battled to quench the fire before men of the Isolo and Sari Iganmu fire service arrived.

Men from the Ninth Brigade belonging to OP Mesa Unit in Mushin, Isolo and Surulere cordoned off the area to allow the fire fighters access to the scene.

The unit commander, Lieutenant Y.M Gana, said he was on the scene with two patrol vehicles to prevent hoodlums from operating.

The fire had been quenched at the time of this report.

An eyewitness said the fire, began when 33,000-litre tanker was about to deposit fuel at the station.

Eyewitnesses said as an MRS worker wanted to open where the petrol will be deposited before it exploded.

Eyewitnesses said as the worker felt the heat coming out from underground, as he tried to lock the place, there was fire everywhere.

It was observed that residents prevented the fire from spreading to other buildings.

The first floor of a one-storey building on 127, Itire Road, was razed.

A Keke Marwa operator, said he was leaving the filling station when the tanker was coming in.

He said:”I just bought N500 petrol and I saw the tanker drive in. The filling station was filled with commuter buses and Marwa. How it happened, I don’t know. It is really painful. I doubt if they were able to take anything.”

A trader, Bisi Fadipe, said she doubted if it was heat from the underground tank that caused the fire, because she saw some people smoking beside the parked tanker.

“They all ran for their lives. I am glad their boss wasn’t in his office at that moment because he never leaves his office. Everything went with the fire. I pity the staff that was injured. “

An eyewitness, Pastor Anibaba, said: “I was sitting in the taxi park with my friends when we heard the explosion. A tanker came to the fuel station and while discharging the fuel to the underground tanks, the fire started, it started from the stations underground tank. Oando is adjacent to the filing station when the fire started they sent its fire fighting truck before the Lagos fire fighting service arrived”.

Fire service warns against attack on its men

LAGOS State Fires Service cried out yesterday over the frequent attacks on its men in line of duty, warning those involved to desist or face the law.

The Nation learnt that more than five firemen have been attacked in various parts of the state.

The service director, Rasak Fadipe, said the officers were attacked at Idewu Street, Olodi-Apapa, Ajegunle and Odunsi Street in Surulere.

He described the officers as dedicated and hardworking, adding that their motive was to save lives and property.

According to him, the gallant officers responded to distress calls and were about to carry out their statutory duties when the hoodlums who wanted to loot saw them as obstacle and started attacking, stabbing and chasing them from the fire scene.

Fadipe explained that a senior officer was stabbed in the ear with a broken bottle; another was wounded in the head; others were manhandled.

“In order to prevent confrontation and breakdown of law and order, the officials retreated and ran for their lives. The mayhem was reported at Tolu and Itire Police stations and it led to the damage of a fire truck,” he said.

He hailed the Itire Divisional Police Officer (DPO) for intervening and rescuing the officers from further assault.

The fire boss appealed to the public to desist from damaging government facilities as tax payers money were expended on providing the amenities. The consequences of unwarranted but coordinated attacks on fire trucks, he said, were an indirect denial of dividend of democracy to others as the damaged truck cannot serve the need of Lagosians.

He assured all and sundry of the readiness of the officers to fight fires whenever call upon.

  • Miners reject govt’s ‘stop work’ order

LAGOS State sand miners have rejected the government’s stop work order, claiming that it is in bad faith.

They said the order breached their agreement with the Commissioner for Energy and Mineral Resources, Mr Olawale Oluwo, on consent.

Last Monday, the Ministry’s Permanent Secretary, Mr O.N. Hotonu issued the order following what he called the continual degradation of the state’s ecosystem because of incessant mining activities which could cause disasters.

But, the Joint Lagos State Miners Association comprising miners from Ajah, Badagry and Ikorodu wrote to the commissioner, complaining that the order was uncalled for.

Their January 26 letter reads: “It (the order) did not only come to us as a rude shock, following our last peaceful and progressive maiden meeting with you (commissioner) and your Permanent Secretary, but also a total disregard for a mutual agreement on the way forward in the sand mining business.”

Jointly signed by Chief Bode Agbolade, Captain Henry Inyang and Abu Lanre Ajayi, for Ajah, Ikorodu and Badagry axis, the letter claimed the alleged continued degradation of the state’s ecosystem was due to the infiltration of the mining business by some of the Ministry’s staff.

“It is on record and we stand to be challenged, that a high percentage of senior staff in the ministry allocated consent and mining sites to themselves without any experience in the specialised profession. Non-members of the mining association also get consent through the backdoor,” they said.

The association fingered a level 12 officer, who had thrice found his way back to the ministry after being redeployed for alleged sharp practices, as the one bringing quacks into the business.

The quacks, they claimed, pay their way to secure consent through him and his cartel.

The association urged Oluwo to summon a meeting of stakeholders to find a lasting solution to the problem.

  • RRS arrests three ‘conmen’

    RRS arrests three ‘conmen’

Rapid Response Squad (RRS) operatives have arrested a three-man gang for alleged phone robbery in Ikeja.

Eyiema Bassey (35), Azuibike Ogbamgwor (27) and Daniel Nwnubam (33) were caught on Tuesday around 11pm.

They were alleged to have deceived their victim, Lucas Olusola (24) into parting with a mobile phone as deposit for goods he was offered inside the Ikeja Computer village.

Bassey, the leader of the gang, said: “The phone was collected in Ikeja around 8pm on his way Conoil filling station in Ikeja. We accosted him when he was approaching Ikeja under bridge with fake foreign accent and claimed to be from Francophone country.  We were trying to strike a business deal with him. What we do is that, we would first engage a passer-by and secure his attention. Later, we would tell him that we are foreigners and that we have brought goods to Nigeria. We would then tell them to deposit money for the goods, but for this guy, he said he had no money and he deposited his phone.

“He told us that he was going home to get money and we told him where to meet us. Suddenly, I think he realised that he was dealing with fraudsters and he attempted to get his phone back but Nwanubam decided to drag the phone with him before absconding.

“As part of our plan, Nwanubam was to pretend as a stranger and intervene. Unfortunately for us, he absconded with the phone and he was caught, before he was handed over to the RRS men.”

The suspect arrested later led RRS operatives to their hide out where the remaining members of the gang were equally nabbed at night.

The suspects, they resorted to the crime out of joblessness.

Police spokesperson Dolapo Badmus confirmed the arrest, assuring that there would be no hidden place for criminals in Lagos.

The suspects, she said, will be charged to court.

  • Naval officer impostor ‘steals’ N13.9m cars

A 39-year-old man Adekanla Ayodele has been accused of stealing five vehicles worth N13.9 million by impersonating a Navy Commander.

Ayodele was said to have worn the naval uniform with the badge of a Commander and, in the company of some accomplices, obtained the five Toyota Sport Utility Vehicles (SUVs) from the owners sometime in December 2012.

The owners, Mr Iredodia Obazee and Mr Usman Muda, reported to the police and Ayodele was later arrested.

He was yesterday arraigned before an Igbosere Magistrates’ Court in Lagos on a four-count charge bordering on conspiracy, obtaining by false pretence, stealing and impersonation preferred against him by the police.

Prosecuting Inspector Stephen Molo told the court that the defendant, who resides in the Ajah area of Lagos, and others who are still at large unlawfully obtained the vehicles.

He listed the SUVs as: Two unregistered Nissan Pathfinder Jeeps (2005 model); one unregistered Toyota Highlander Jeep (2004 model), one unregistered Toyota RAV4 Jeep (2008 model) and one unregistered Toyota Tundra Jeep (2002 model) all valued at N13.9 million.

Ayodele denied the charges, saying that he was just a businessman.

Magistrate A. O. Sholadoye granted him N500,000 bail with two sureties in the like sum, one of whom must be a senior military officer.

She adjourned the case to March 22.

  • Expectant mum suffers womb rupture in police cell

Expectant mum suffers womb rupture in police cell

AN expectant mother, Mrs Tosin Taiwo, is battling to save her unborn baby after allegedly suffering a womb rupture following her collapse in police custody on Tuesday.

Mrs Taiwo who claimed to have bled for two days in police cell, said she was rushed to Randle General Hospital in Surulere, where it took doctors two hours to revive her.

She said she spent four days in detention at Surulere Police Station and was denied bail by the Investigating Police Officer (IPO). Mrs Louisa Njoku, who claimed to be acting on “orders from above”.

Mrs Taiwo, who is in hospital at Agbado Ijaiye, a Lagos suburb, said she was arrested last Saturday at Meiran Market over the N4.2million she is owing Ajibola Abudu, a businessman.

The woman, who is eight-weeks pregnant, said her scan result shows there is a rupture in her womb. She told The Nation yesterday that she suffered breath seizure in detention.

Mrs Taiwo said: “I was locked up for four days without bail. I bled on Saturday and Sunday, I also told the policemen that I was not feeling well but nothing was done. I was taken to Randle General Hospital but I left there on Tuesday evening. I am now at a family hospital in my area where I have done scan and they said there is a rupture somewhere in my womb.

“It must have been caused by my inability to breathe while inside the cell. I could not cope there, I suffered breath seizure. The toilet was dirty and the stench in the cell was unbearable. It was choking. There was even no water to bath or anything. The experience was horrible.”

She said she borrowed money from the complainant to do business last May but was duped, adding that he rebuffed all her entreaties for a payment plan.

Abudu, she claimed, insisted that she should pay the money once.

Her husband Olusola Taiwo said the IPO disobeyed the order of Area C Commander Tajudeen Bakare, an Assistant Commissioner of Police (ACP), to release her.

He said: “She refused to release and did not charge her to court. I told the IPO that my wife was not feeling well but she refused to listen.

“The IPO said she will not grant her bail due to instruction from above. I believe the complainant gave the instruction. That is why he brought the case to Surulere Police Station where he knows officers.

“One of the officers, who arrested her at Meiran, boasted that she would rot in jail.

“He brought police to arrest her on Saturday and detained her at Surulere Police Station. All efforts to secure her bail proved abortive as the IPO told us there was instruction from above not to grant her bail.”

Taiwo said after he failed to secure his wife’s bail on Sunday and Monday, he went to see Bakare, who called the parties and pleaded with Abudu to accept the payment plan.

“But the complainant refused insisting on complete payment, otherwise, my wife should be charged to court. When the Area Commander saw that he was not cooperating, he ordered the IPO to release my wife since the case was a civil matter, but his directive was not followed by the IPO who restated there was an ‘order from above’ to detain her.

“Because of our insistence, the IPO said she would be charged to court on Tuesday morning. We went to the station early in the morning and waited for that to happen. It was in the course of waiting that my wife fainted.

“We rushed her to Randle General Hospital with the IPO in the vehicle and it took about two hours before she was revived. I was called to come to the station and sign for her bail while she was still at the hospital,” he said.

  • Woman flees with fiancé’s N295.5m after drugging him

A 46-year-old woman, Victoria Alaegbu, has been accused of using charm on her fiancé, Prince Hillary Unachukwu and running away with his $1.5 million (N295.5 million).

Alaegbu was said to have administered a noxious chemical substance on Unachukwu last December in Ikoyi, Lagos. The substance knocked him out between 8pm and midnight and gave Alaegbu time to steal the money and lock Unachukwu inside the house.

Unachukwu woke up when the charm wore off and shouted for help.

Alaegbu was later arrested by the police. She was arraigned yesterday at an Igbosere Magistrates’ Court in Lagos on a five-count charge of conspiracy, attempt to kill, stealing, unlawful detention and possession of fake document.

Prosecuting Sergeant Nicholas Akpene said the defendant locked Unachukwu up inside his apartment with a padlock.

The prosecutor also alleged that the defendant had a SIM card with number 07087773669, which was not registered in her name and address.

The registration of the SIM card was done with intent to commit fraud, he added.

    Alaegbu denied the charges.

Magistrate S. K. Matepo granted her N5 million bail with two sureties in the like sum.

She ordered that the sureties must swear to an affidavit of means and show evidence of tax payment. One of the sureties should be a relation of the accused.

The case was adjourned till February 10 for mention.

Last Tuesday, the police arraigned Unachukwu’s 22-year-old security guard, Isaac Onoja, for conniving with unknown persons to steal the $1.5 million.

Onoja, from Benue State, had claimed that some unknown armed men forcibly entered the premises and tied him up before stealing the $1.5m from the complainant’s room.

“When Usang asked them where they were going, the accused could not give a satisfactory answer and he decided to take them to the police station. Paul and Aneka, who did not want to follow the policeman to the station, conspired to beat him up and also tear his shirt,” Elibeh told the court.

The offence contravened Sections 166, 172 and 337 of the Criminal Law of Lagos State, 2011.

The accused, however, denied the charge. The Chief Magistrate, Mr Titus Abolarinwa, granted the sex workers bail in the sum of N50,000 each with two sureties each in like sum.

Further hearing in the case was fixed for February 24.
