  • Guardian burns boy’s body with iron

Guardian burns boy’s body with iron

A trader simply identified as Mama Sarah has been accused of maltreating a boy in her custody.

Twelve-year-old Michael Maduagu, a victim of domestic violence, was allegedly “severely assaulted” by his guardian.

The Nation learnt that Mama Sarah, a cleaner with Nigerian Naval Dockyard, usually descends on the boy.

She beat up the boy last Sunday, placed a hot iron on his leg and made incisions on his body with a blade.

The boy, a primary one pupil at Bonny Camp Primary School, was brought from Anambra State when he was barely five.

Mama Sarah’s fellow traders at Bar Beach Bus Stop on Victoria Island yesterday accused her of inhuman treatment of the boy, urging government to prosecute her.

Musbau Agbodemu, Executive Director of Rural and Urban Development Initiative (RUDI), a pressure group, said the matter was first reported to his Ebute Meta, Lagos office on Tuesday by a trader.

He said the Ministry of Woman Affairs and Poverty Alleviation officials have intervened in the matter, adding: “The boy is now in their custody. When he was brought to our office, he wasn’t in a good state. His body is full of scars and bruises. He couldn’t talk much because of fear. I learnt she brought him to Lagos with the pretext of taking care of him after his father’s death. I just pray this matter will be treated with utmost urgency because she was summoned on Wednesday.”

Agbodemu, who operates a welfare centre, quoted the victim as saying that he was more pained when his guardian didn’t allow him to attend his school’s end-of-the-year concert. He said it was during vacation that she asked him to go to school but he returned home when he found no one.

Mama Sarah’s fellow traders did not hide their feelings on the matter.

Buchi said since Mama Sarah was summoned on Wednesday, she has been acting weird, adding that she has been planning to run away with her daughter.

“I moved to Bar Beach six years ago and I got to know Mama Sarah through Michael. He was always sad. I mostly saw him on the expressway selling fuel. Things I cannot lift, Michael will lift it. There was a time I bought him food; I couldn’t believe my eyes when I saw the woman eating the food. The boy once pleaded with me to take him home but I couldn’t because I didn’t want to be accused of kidnapping. So, I asked him to report his guardian to Bar Beach Police Station but they didn’t take his matter serious. Most times she accuses him of stealing but I know he is not a thief. There was a day Sarah, her daughter, beat him with a stick. It was when I couldn’t continue to see the boy suffer I took him to RUDI.”

Celestial said: “There is nothing she cannot use to beat him. At times, she used naked wire, hot knife and put grinded pepper on his wound. She is that mean. I personally went to her place of work to report to her boss. I don’t know the reason they haven’t come to pick her. Is it until she escapes? I think she also needs to be tortured to know how it feels,” she said.

A resident, Destiny Francis, said she had contact with the woman two years ago when she was sent out of the police barracks because of Michael.

She said: “I was shocked when I heard that she uses hot knife on boy’s legs. Three of her own children left her when her trouble was too much. It is just her last born that lives with her and that one is something else. She sometimes beat her mother. I want justice to prevail.”

  • Diesel-laden tanker falls in Lagos

    Diesel-laden tanker falls in Lagos

A huge crowd yesterday descended on a tanker to scoop diesel after it fell at Toyota Bus stop on Oshodi-Apapa Expressway.

The tanker, it was gathered, was trying to climb the bridge leading to Airport Road when it fell.

An eyewitness, Chinedu Okezie, said the tanker fell while trying to reverse on  realising that it took the wrong route.

He said: “I was still negotiating with a customer when I saw the driver running. I don’t know how many people were there but they left the tanker. Immediately, people alerted the state fire service”.

When The Nation got to the scene, the tanker had been moved to one side of the road to avoid traffic gridlock. Some people were seen transferring the diesel into another tanker.

But, this didn’t stop people including nearby traders from scooping diesel. Some women stood with bowls to get their own share while others entered gutters to scoop the diesel.

An onlooker, Chigozie, said immediately the Lagos State Emergency Management Authority (LASTMA) successfully took the tanker off the road, traders resumed to the scene.

He said: “Traders at the market rushed to the tanker with jerry cans, funnel and pet bottles. Some went as far as taking drums and hose to take diesel. The amazing thing was that none of the officials disturbed them. I feel it was business for them. I know if it happened in the afternoon, it would have turned bloody. It is unfortunate. I was glad to see some of the officials transfer the diesel if not the traders would have gotten more than enough.”

Another trader said she was glad the incident happened over night, adding that if it happened during the day, it could have triggered fire as the market is always rowdy.

  • Okada riders vow to expose bad eggs

Okada riders vow to expose bad eggs

The Lagos Commercial motorcycle riders’ union leadership has warned bad eggs in the group to stop using their machines to rob. Alhaji Suleiman Raji Jafo, Lagos State chairman of ANACOWA Motorcycle Owners and Riders Association, an affiliate of Road Transport Employers Association of Nigeria (RTEAN) said the bad eggs won’t go unpunished if caught.

He said his association is determined to expose those who use Okada to rob.

Jafo said: “We have mapped out strategy to control and curb this menace; we are not resting on our oars to make this work. We will ensure that all our unit chairmen duly register their members, have a closer relationship with each member and even set up a task force to know their whereabouts.

“We want to study their way of life, this is tasking but we believe it is achievable with hard work and believe in God. It is very embarrassing and annoying as the state chairman whenever I listen to news about armed robbers making use of Okada to rob, but I can sincerely say most of these riders are not registered members of our association.”

He said the association has also warned its members to stop plying the expressway and other restricted areas in the state.

“We organise seminars every week to warn members on restrictions and we have committees and enforcement groups that monitor those who disobey our orders, you should understand there are bad eggs in every association but we have a way to control our members which I can vouch for; they have all realised the importance of all these and it is beneficial to them also as it reduces risk of accidents. They all know the implication of plying the highway,” he said.

Jafo appealed to Governor Akinwunmi Ambode and Police Commissioner Fatai Owoseni to prevail on law enforcement agencies to stop taking advantage of the restriction order to impound motorcycles even where the riders did not ply such routes.

This has been a major challenge daily, he said.

The ANACOWA chief said Okada riders had been beneficial to Lagosians by conveying them to their destinations in good time.

“It is also a known fact that most Okada riders are graduates and it has created a lot of employment for many of them. Government should support Okada riders by encouraging us rather than restricting our operations which may lead to mass unemployment. The last restriction by the state government has led many into armed robbery,” he said.

  • VIS official, Okada rider injured in accidents

VIS official, Okada rider injured in accidents

A vehicle Inspection Service (VIS) official and a commercial motorcyclist popularly known as okada rider were yesterday injured in two accidents in Lagos.

The VIS man was hit when a Ford Explorer Sport Utility Vehicle (SUV) and a Mistibushi L200 collided at LAB Bus Stop on Egbeda-Iyana Ipaja Road.

The Okada rider broke his arm following a collision with a hit-and-run driver on Ijegun-Ikotun Road  in Igando-Ikotun Local Council Development Area (LCDA).

An eyewitness said the Ford Explorer ran over the culvert to the other side of the road and hit the Mitsubishi L200 following brake failure.

The VIS officer, who was about stopping the Mitsubishi L200 was hit, he added.

But another eyewitness blamed the accident on drivers’ impatience, saying it was not caused by brake failure.

“It wasn’t brake failure,” he said, “the Ford Explorer and the Mitsubishi L200 pick up were not patient enough, the Ford was coming from a U-Turn while the pickup did not want to give way, the Ford forced its way forcefully and the result is what you can see.”

The other accident occurred around 5am in front of Premex Petrol Station, Ile Ibadan bus stop, Ijegun.

An eye witness, Tajudeen Adeyemo, who works at the petrol station, said he was inside the office when he was called by the workers to see a man lying in front of the station.

“When I got to the spot to check the victim, luckily for him I found his phone and called the last number he had dialled this morning (yesterday) before the accident happened and they were able to get in touch with his relatives,” he said.

Adeyemo said, the okada rider’s relatives took him to hospital.

  • Five killed, five injured in Ikorodu cult clash

Five persons were killed and five others injured in a cult clash in Ikorodu, Lagos on Tuesday.

The fight between the Aye and Eiye confraternities was said to have started around 1am during Itunmeko street carnival.

Four of the injured have been transferred to the Lagos State University Teaching Hospital (LASUTH), the other is still at Ikorodu General Hospital.

According to sources, the trouble started after the Eiye cult group killed two Aye (Black Axe) members who were invited to the carnival.

They two were said to have been killed on their way home.

The Aye cult group was said to have taken the fight to Eiye group, in anger, at the wee hours of yesterday, killing three of its members.

The Nation gathered that the cultists used axes, cutlasses and guns.

“They have been killing themselves. The fight started at a street carnival at Itunmeko around midnight on Tuesday. I was at the carnival but I left there around 10pm before the incident.

“I heard that two people were killed that day and the other group fought back and killed three from the other side. It was between the Aye and Eiye groups.

“They have been targeting themselves. I do not really know what happened; only those within can tell you what actually happened.

“I heard they killed two Black Axe guys and the following day, the Black Axe people killed three Eiye guys,” said a source.

Another source blamed the Ikorodu Vigilante group for not doing its job, adding: “The problem is that the Ikorodu Vigilante group has been compromised. They are not doing their job well; that is why these cultists can go on the rampage at odd hours.”

Police spokesperson, Dolapo Badmos, a Superintendent (SP) said two bodies were recovered.

“We recovered two bodies on Tuesday evening. I am not aware if there were injured persons. But the police have gone all out to get the perpetrators and bring them to justice. More intense patrols are being carried out to forestall any recurrence,” she said.

Magistrate Bola Osunsanmi asked an interpreter to interpret the charge to the accused. The case was adjourned to February 10.

A source told The Nation that the suspects bled to death, adding that their bodies were taken to the morgue around 8pm.

Police Commissioner Fatai Owoseni said he was not aware of the suspects’ death.

  • Man in prison for ‘robbing’ couple on Xmas Day

An Ikeja Chief Magistrates’ Court in Lagos yesterday remanded Riliwan Olanrewaju in prison custody for allegedly robbing a couple on Christmas Day.

Magistrate Bola Osunsanmi ordered the remand of the accused pending advice from the Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP).

Olanrewaju, 25, faces a three-count charge on robbery and unlawful possession.

Prosecuting police Inspector Simon Imhonwa told the court that the accused committed the offence on December 25, just before midnight.

Imhonwa said the accused was apprehended following a tip-off and was found with a piece of metal shaped like a pistol, wrapped in black Sellotape.

He said that the accused threatened the couple with the ‘fake gun’ and caused them terror.

Osunsanmi requested for the DPP’s advice following an indication in the charge that Olanrewaju attacked his victims with a fake gun.

“His file should be duplicated and forwarded to DPP for legal advice; he is to be remanded in prison custody pending that outcome,” Osunsanmi said.

The judge adjourned the case till March 17.

THE Joint Task Force on Anti-Pipeline Vandalism yesterday seized a wooden boat-laden with 80 drums and 290 gallons of 50 litres of petroleum products at Majidun, Ikorodu, Lagos.

The boat operators, suspected to be vandals, were said to have jumped into the river on sighting the task force.

He said: “The patrol was based on intelligence report about vandals’ activities in the area. On approaching the area, we were able to overwhelm the vandals and most of them took to their heels. • ‘Fake’ revenue collectors attack council officials

‘Fake’ revenue collectors attack council officials

ELEVEN persons have been arrested by the police for alleged illegal collection of revenue at Ile Epo Market in Abule Egba, Lagos.

The suspects were said to have in the past attacked and chased away council officials from doing their job.

They also allegedly forcibly collected toll, trading and offloading revenue from truck drivers bringing goods into the market from the north and east.

The Nation learnt that their arrest followed petitions by Agbado/Oke Odo Local Council Development Area to the Oke Odo Police Division and Lagos Police Command on unauthorised revenue collectors’ activities in the market.

The arrest was carried out by men of Oke Odo Police Division.

Those arrested have been charged before an Ogba Magistrates’ Court in Lagos for alleged unlawful collection of revenue.

The council’s Executive Secretary, David Famuyiwa, said the council was constrained to inform the police to arrest perpetrators following several protests by outraged traders.

“I have held several meetings with the perpetrators in the past and asked them to desist from the illegal acts but they refused to stop their illegalities. We have taken legitimate step to curb their activities by inviting law enforcement agents and we will not resort to self help to stop their unscrupulous activities in the market.

“On several occasions, these illegal revenue collectors attacked and chased our revenue collectors out of the market. They extended their nefarious activities by forcibly collecting toll, trading and offloading revenue from truck drivers who bring goods into the market from the north and east. Hence, we wrote petitions to the Divisional Police Officer (DPO) of Oke Odo Division, Area ‘M’ Command and Commissioner of Police among others.

Famuyiwa denied that the council had engaged National Union of Road Transport Workers (NURTW) members to forcibly collect revenue from traders.

The traders accused NURTW hoodlums of attacking them in a bid to forcibly collect revenue.
