  • Organisation takes cancer awareness to Lagos streets

Organisation takes cancer awareness to Lagos streets

A non-governmental organization (NGO), Care Organisation Public Enlightenment (COPE), has embarked on a 10-km walk to create awareness and sensitisation about breast cancer.

Members of the organisation, partners, friends and cancer survivors, walked from the Arch Bishop Vinning memorial Cathedral, GRA, Ikeja to Maryland, wearing breast cancer awareness shirts and distributing flyers, yesterday.

President of the organization, Mrs Ebunola Anozie said the walk was organized as one of the activities to commemorate COPE’s 20th anniversary this month.

She said: “It has been 20 years of fighting breast cancer and we are stronger than ever. We want to reduce the mortality rate of breast cancer. This is breast cancer awareness, we want people to understand the reality of breast cancer and the walk is a good form of exercise for everyone. This is fantastic. I advice people to examine their breasts, present early and watch their lifestyle. We want to make everyone around aware.”

Mrs Anozie also called for the establishment of a comprehensive cancer centre in the state to cater to the needs of cancer patients, while the survivors cheered in agreement.

Also walking with the group was head of strategic brand management of Skye Bank, Nduneche Ezuruike, who charged everyone to take cancer awareness to their families and circles to help spread the word.

He said: “The scourge of cancer in Nigeria has been a major problem so we are seeking to intervene to ensure that every woman undergoes breast examination. You cannot say you are free until you undergo a test. We are joining people across the world to say no to cancer. We have been partnering with COPE for the past 10 years to campaign against breast cancer. Sponsoring this walk today is just part of our social responsibility to ensure that the fight against cancer is won. We believe that if we work concertedly, we can win the fight.

“You see, cancer awareness is a family thing. If you think you are not involved by virtue of age, or that you have undergone the test, there are people in your family or your relations who might need the information. So this is a clarion call to those who are not here that wherever you are, join this fight against cancer. With such little steps, we will make a big outcome.”

  • Six-month-old, four others injured in Lagos gas explosion

Six-month-old, four others injured in Lagos gas explosion

No fewer than five persons, including a six months old baby, were yesterday rescued in a gas explosion in a Lagos community.

The victims, Jubril Anjola, six months old; his mother Joy Anjola; his grand uncle, Monsuru Anjola; a motorcyclist, John Ejeobi, and Kamoru Basiru, were said to have been injured. They were rushed to nearby Afolabi Hospital.

The incident, which occurred at 88, Oworo Road, by L and K bus stop, Oworonsoki, was said to have been caused by the gas compressor of a freezer kept in a beer parlour.

Five other shops in the residential area partially collapsed as a result of the explosion. The perimeter fence of a nearby hotel also broke down.

The explosion, it was learnt, uprooted the iron gate fixed at the entrance of the bungalow and threw it on the other side of the road, smashing the glass doors and windows of a boutique.

It was gathered that the baby and his mother were in front of their home when the incident occurred.

According to eyewitnesses, the baby was bleeding through his nose. His face was reddish; his mother allegedly sustained a leg injury and his grand uncle had cuts on his head and body.

Basiru, who is also a resident was said to have been retuening home, but fell as a result of the pressure of the explosion.

One of the residents, John, said that the incident was massive because wines and assorted carbonated drinks were stored in the beer parlour.

“The incident occurred around 1pm, I think it was caused by the freezer. At first many people thought it was probably a bomb explosion and people were running.

‘No one died. Those who were injured have been taken to the hospital, the baby was initially taken to Afolabi Hospital but the state government people have carried him away.

“About five shops were outside this place; they have collapsed. Even the fence in this hotel collapsed.

“The situation would have been worst if this joint and other shops were opened. Imagine the number of people that would have been affected.

“No one died. But I know that an Okada man who was passing by fell off his bike too, and sprained his ankle,” he said.

At the time of filing this story, policemen from the Anti-bomb unit and Rapid Response Squad (RRS), officials of the Lagos State Fire Service, National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) as well as Lagos State Emergency Management Agency (LASEMA) were at the scene to ensure the explosion did not escalate.

A crowd gathered around the scene of the explosion, impeding emergency response.

Fire Service Director, Rasaq Fadipe, and the Southwest spokesman for NEMA, Ibrahim Farinloye confirmed the incident.

Although preliminary investigation indicated that it was a gas explosion, Fadipe said he requested for the anti-bomb personnel so that a thorough investigation could be conducted.

He said there was no massive fire, adding that the Ilupeju fire truck responded promptly.

Fadipe added that the agency responded to five other fire calls between Friday and Saturday,  urging Lagos residents to be cautious in using electrical appliances.

LASEMA’s General Manager Micheal Akindele said the cause of the incident was chemical explosion.

He said: “The vibration from the explosion shattered the window glasses of adjacent buildings.

The agency received the distress call around 1:12pm, and immediately activated its emergency response team.

“Three adults were rescued alive but with minor injuries, they were taken to nearest hospital (Afolabi hospital) for treatment.

“A six months old baby boy also survived the explosion and was taken to intensive care unit of the Lagos State University Teaching Hospital (LASUTHA) by Lasambus.”

  • Rape victim changes school

    Rape victim changes school

THE four-year-old girl allegedly raped by her school bus driver has stopped attending the school following her bitter experience.

She has resumed in a new school, following her insistence not to attend her old school, her grandmother, Mrs T. Ajose, told The Nation yesterday.

“My daughter resumed in her new school last week,” she said.

Mrs. Ajose, a businesswoman, claimed the suspect, Yemi Adesina, committed the act within the school premises and has been detained at the Panti Police Station in Adekunle, Yaba, Lagos.

She said she knew about the incident when she went to fetch her granddaughter after school.

Ajose, who said she found it hard to believe that her granddaughter had been raped, rushed the girl to a hospital, where her fear was confirmed.

“The following day, when I got to the school, I shouted on top of my voice. Though my daughter has been attending the school since she was 18 months old, the teachers pretended as if they didn’t know her. Some residents and passers-by who heard my cry intervened and, in the process, destroyed some of the school’s property out of anger after listening to my story.”

Mrs. Ajose said she had been going to the Special Anti-Robbery Squad (SARS) since the school wrote a petition that those who vandalised its property caused the death of one of its teachers, Mrs. Folashade Ademosu.

She said: “We have been coming to SARS for the past one week and they haven’t attended to us. Two days ago, a personal assistant to the Commissioner of Police said until the late teacher’s family comes to SARS, we will not be attended to.

“I am tired of coming here. We are always in the sun; at times when it rains, we are always here. All that is happening has really affected my business because I have been locking my shop for the past two weeks. Will my daughter’s case just end like that? I just don’t know. No one has come to me, not even the school management or the suspect’s family,” she said.

Mrs. Ajose said they were asked to come to SARS on October 12.

When The Nation visited the late teacher’s Abesan Estate home, her widower, Alhaji Ademosu, described her death as unfortunate.

He said his late wife was the victim’s class teacher, adding that she wasn’t aware of the incident until some people went to vandalise their school.

“She told me that when the residents entered, they shouted ‘that is the teacher!’ That is the teacher and it was when she tried to escape that she broke her leg. I even heard she locked herself inside the toilet for safety.

“Instead of the school authorities to take her to the hospital, they took her and the school bus driver to Alagolo Police Station. A family friend pleaded she should be taken to a hospital. She complained of her back and leg but after the bone setters fixed her leg, she managed to walk.”

Ademosu said it was when she was cooking on Sallah day that she slumped.

He said: “It is painful. Before she died, she kept asking me to hold her hands. She complained of her stomach. She was still in shock over the incident that happened in the school. Ahhh! I miss her. She bought so many things for Sallah but she couldn’t use any of them. I am not ready for any court case. I can’t go through the stress.”

Police spokesman Joe Offor, a Deputy Superintendent (DSP), who promised to speak on the matter, did not do so at the time of this report.

Property worth millions gone in market fire

Goods worth millions of naira were yesterday destroyed by fire in Sabo market at Ikorodu. The inferno started around 1:25am.

The cause of the fire could not be ascertained, but speculations were rife that it was caused by a spark from a chemical shop following restoration of light around midnight.

The Nation learnt that there had been power outage for almost a week.

Officials of Lagos State Environmental Management Agency (LASEMA); Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC); Lagos State fire fighters and the Nigerian Police were at the scene.

Assistant Chief Fire Superintendent (ACFS) of the Ikorodu Fire Station Olatunji Bravo said: “The fire started around 1:25am, we got the information from a distress call made by residents. We arrived four minutes after we received the call. The fire affected almost 35 shops and we were able to rescue about eight shops”.

A trader said she was told of the fire by her friends.

She said those around when the fire started claimed that it was caused by electrical surge from a chemical shop.

“The sympathisers had been helping to recover the goods before I arrived. I have four shops and all the shops were affected and the goods worth N3 million were lost to the inferno”.

A representative from Detop Link Nigeria Limited said: “Our store house in the market was affected by the fire but we were able to recover little goods from the other shops.”

When asked about the worth of goods, he said: “I can’t quantify the worth of goods in the market but that will be done when we get to the main office to do the calculations”.

The Iyaloja-General of Ikorodu Division, Alhaja Taofeekat Allison, said: “We heard that it was from a chemical shop. I got a call from the security men in the market about the fire. We really appreciate the fire fighters for their quick intervention”.

  • Ago Palace road ready in three months

Ago Palace road ready in three months

The General Manager, China Civil Engineering Construction Corporation (CCECC), Li Bing, yesterday said the rehabilitation of Ago Palace Way in Okota, Lagos will be completed in three months.

He spoke when the road was inspected by Permanent Secretary, Ministry of Works and Infrastructure, Mr Ajibade Bade-Adebowale.

Bing said the firm’s major challenge is the weather, nothing: “If the weather doesn’t stop us, we will complete it before Christmas if not, it may be delayed. We have also been able to grade some parts of the road but the rain has been disturbing us from work. At this stage, we need people’s support and understanding so we can finish as planned. The road situation is bad now because the drainage system is blocked but we will improve on it.”

He said alternative routes had been provided for motorists to beat the traffic gridlock.

The Permanent Secretary said it was the last phase of the three roads marked for rehabilitation on the Okota-Isolo axis.

He said: “The reason the road has been delayed is the downpour and the landlords who took the state government to court but that has been resolved. This road is very important because it also serves as alternative routes for motorists heading to Festac and Badagry. Residents should cooperate with CCECC because for them to have a good outcome, they must go through hardship.”

Bade-Adebowale urged residents to cease dumping refuse in drains to avoid flooding and damaging the roads.

A resident, Mrs Dorcas Ihevba, prayed for early completion of the road.

She said: “Though it hasn’t been easy walking on the road but I know it will soon be over because we have suffered enough.”

A shop owner, Chris Dave, said he is also praying for the completion of the road.

He said: “When I came to shop this morning (yesterday), I was overwhelmed because I have suffered on this road. I can’t count the amount I have spent on tyres but I know all that will be over. Though it has affected my business; I know after the completion, everything will fall in place.”

A tricyclist, who gave his name as Tijani, said: “I am really glad about this because most times I spend my day at a mechanic workshop repairing my Marwa. If the road is completed, I don’t have to spend my day there. It is a good development.”

He said over 1,720 motorcyclists were arrested for plying restricted routes and their machines confiscated.

The agency’s activities, Abe said, were geared towards ensuring a secure and tidy environment for commerce to thrive.

Street trading, he said, remained prohibited in the state, noting that it is responsible for most of the heavy traffic in the city.

He urged motorists to desist from patronising street traders.
